My review about the i-Mate Smartphone writed byPH
Aug 04, 2016 07:24 PM2399 Views

The line between regular mobile phones and smartphones has well and truly blurred. Dopod's 595, O2's Xda Stealth and now i-mate's Smartflip all offer full Windows Mobile 5.0 functionality, but come in packages as small as many phones that aren't as feature-rich.

The phone's basic measurements are 98.5mm by 51.4mm by 15.8mm, and this coupled with a weight of 99 grams makes it both smaller and lighter than the 595 and Stealth. The clamshell isn't quite as slim as Motorola's RAZR, but it should slip comfortably into most jeans pockets.

Speaking of the RAZR, the Smartflip uses a similar keypad design, in that there aren't individual buttons but rather a single brushed metal plate. We found this to be both comfortable and elegant.

Aesthetically, the Smartflip is all black with shiny silver accents. When compared to regular mobile phones it's far from the most attractive offering you'll find, but relative to other smartphones it's quite the looker. Check out the attached images and decide for yourself.

To wrap up our design observations, it's worth noting that i-mate has designed the device to be used as an MP3 player as well as a phone/PDA. Three track navigation buttons on the front of the device enable users to conveniently cycle through or pause songs without having to flip open the phone.

Features

Like many clamshells, the Smartflip offers dual screens. On the outside you'll find a 1.2-inch, 128x128 LCD that supports up to 65K colours, while flipping it open reveals a 2.2-inch, 240x320 display, also supporting up to 65K colours. We found the external screen to be extremely handy since it's capable of displaying useful information at a glance, such as a digital/analogue clock, battery status, caller ID, volume, missed calls and MP3 player track information.

The internal screen is vibrant and perfect for basic phone tasks, but those looking at editing more than the occasional word document or spreadsheet will likely find themselves longing for more screen space.

The Smartflip supports Bluetooth 1.2, which is pretty much mandatory even for a non-smartphone. Unfortunately, like the Dopod 595, it doesn't offer Wi-Fi, so all of your Web browsing and e-mail downloading must take place over GPRS.

Quad-band GSM(850/900/1800/1900) support is present for your regular phone functions, and both loud speaker and MP3/WAV/WMA/AAC/AMR ring tones are also present.

Mobile professionals will be pleased to hear that, since it runs the Windows Mobile 5.0 operating system, the Smartflip comes bundled with a number of handy office applications including Outlook with push e-mail and ClearVue's Document, PDF, Presentation and Worksheet applications.

Synchronising with a PC is accomplished via a USB1.1 connection, but strangely, the device uses a proprietary 12-pin connector. This won't pose much of an issue except in the event that you lose the bundled USB cable, at which point you may have difficulty finding a replacement.

While O2's Stealth and Dopod's 595 offer 192MB and 128MB built-in flash storage respectively, the Smartflip only offers 64MB, so you'll definitely want to populate the provided microSD slot, which sits just underneath the SIM card.

Of course, no smartphone would be complete without the requisite low-end digital camera, and the Smartflip doesn't disappoint here. It's got a 1.3-megapixel camera, and although there's no flash - which puts low-light shots out of the question - it's capable of taking self-portraits thanks to the ability to preview your image on the external display. Noise is apparent in most snaps, but for candid weekend shots the camera should suffice.

Performance

Given its diminutive dimensions we certainly weren't expecting the Smartflip to pack a speedy processor and loads of RAM. Turns out we were right - it's got a 195MHz processor and 64MB of memory. Surprisingly, however, during testing we hardly noticed any lag at all. Load times are fast(aside from initial boot-up), and unless you're planning on editing spreadsheets, word documents and composing e-mails simultaneously, you won't experience RAM shortages.

Navigating the user interface is easy considering the lack of a touchscreen, but bashing out long e-mails and documents isn't nearly as simple, due to the relatively small screen size and lack of a full QWERTY keyboard.

Call quality is great, the loudspeaker feature is clear and audio playback through the bundled headphones is pleasing. Battery life - at around 2-3 days per charge - should also be sufficient for most users.

If you're looking for a compact phone but at the same time require the power to view and compose e-mail, documents, presentations and spreadsheets, the Smartflip should fit the bill nicely.

Beware! Do not get into trap
May 01, 2008 12:00 PM3295 Views

I bought an imate PDAL device on 2006 december. After an year microsoft released windows mobile 6 and all other vendors provided upgrade to windows mobile within a short period of time. But in an international  mobile forum imate is the first company demonstrated windows mobile 6 on a PDAL device. It is almost 2 year now and microsoft released another version of Windows called 6.1. So far imate customers like me did not get an upgrade to windows mobile 6. I am sure they are capable of providing the support buy they are not ready to give upgrade. This shows the kind of ethics and values that company follows.

This phone is not suitable for an average indian who do not throw away his/her mobile every year. So if you wish to use same mobile for atleast 2 years. Do not trust them do not get into the trap.

For reference, my communication with imate india support.

You're now talking to David from'India Support' The topic is: imate PDAL

David> Welcome to Club i-mate. My name is David and I am a Club Advisor. What can I help you with?

vijay> hi ]

vijay> I Have a PDAL device

David> r welcome

vijay> when I can get upgrade to windows mobile 6

vijay> MY latest version of GPS software need windows mobile 6

David> ok

David> would like to inform you that we have no such rom for p-dal device

vijay> when I can expect a windows mobile 6 ROM from imate

vijay> all your competetior are released windows mobile 6 ROM

vijay> you are letting down your existing customers by not providing upgrade

David> sorry to say that we are not going to have such rom version for p-dal device

David> we only have it for our JAMA and ULTIMATE series

vijay> nice to hear that I spend 24000 INR for buying this device and now you are saying my device is useless

vijay> can I get mail address of your CEO or MD?

Person whom I was chatting left abruptly without any further communication

PDAL is Value for Money
Mar 17, 2008 05:00 PM3197 Views

I have the PDAL phone from imate for past 6 months. At that time it costed me Rs 15000 from Ghaffar Market, New Delhi. I had gone to the market with an inclination towards another newly launched and advertised model from imate that was JAMA. So naturally I asked about JAMA and shopkeeper promptly showed me that which was costing around Rs 14 k.But along with JAMA he also suggested me PDAL. I didn't showed much interest. But when he brought the cell in front of me; I was amazed.PDA-L is a hell good looking phonekeeping in mind that it is a touch screen based phone which are usually big and ugly. Not so with PDAL.

PDA-L is a bar shaped phone with 2.4" LCD which is quite responsive except for a few times when you have to press the sylus real hard. The screen is a 65k colour screen which is good but there are issues with it under broad sunlight. All budget business phones with touch screens still have a 65k screen. So don't have much options in this range.

Coming to voice quality it is good.Reception is very nice.Multimedia capability is nothing to rave about. It is just mediocre. There is no FM.Now coming to the best part for which business phones are meant for that is Internet.Surfing net on this phone is a breeze. It isEDGE enabled..So good speeds are there.Internet Explorer renders the webpages very well and if you have it you don't miss much of your surfing experience.Blog postings, regular mail checking, surfing heavy multimedia sites, etc is no problem.Downloading full screen resolution wallpapers i.e 1024768 resoluted images is easy and they look as good on the imate screen as that on your CRT monitor.WiFiis also inbuilt but I never got any chance to check that.Battery backup is good lasting for 2-3 days with moderate use.It is based onWindows 5.0 edition **which is old as there is newer 6.0 edition but 5.0 is faster than 6.0 so not much problems.

Overall I prefered it over JAMA and HTC P3400 as they were the other options in my range.HTC P3400 has 2.8" screen I think it ought to be good. But stil I am happy with my purchase. One last thing though JAMA claims to have a 2 MP camera. But it is not; infact JAMA has a 2.0 MP Effect Camera while PDAL has a full fledged 2 MP camera. So if pic quality matters to you even then PDAL is a better choice plus it is WIFI and EDGE enabled which JAMA doesn't have. The price diffrence between the two is hardly a few hundred rupees so go for PDAL.

P.S:- Fly which is a part of U.K based Meridian group has also launched PDAL with its logo in some parts of world like Russia. They may have a pact with imate in that part of world. It striked me how same phone can be launched by 2 different companies with PDAL remaining same and parent company as Fly and imate.May anybody knows it here.In between Fly has named PDAL as PC100 and given 6.0 Windows with it.Isn't it great?

Imate PDAL -bad phone !
Nov 01, 2007 01:38 PM4207 Views

I bought imate PDAL in exchange of my SE K750i. specs of this phone look impressive but when it comes to _real_ life most of them are not upto mark

Sound reception : Pathetic !! there is some kind of echo and voice drop in between calls.

PDA functions: are ok, but not upto mark. many times it slows down for normal operations like opening word files etc.

Connectivity : I was not able to use my bluetooth gps with this phone, dont know why it was not getting detected. and wifi connectivity is also bad. signals drop frequently.

for USB connectivity its not detected as mass storage device so u need to install complete PC suite to make it work. and there is no IRDA

Multimedia: speakers are of veri poor quality. sounds like coming from torn off speakers.

there is no FM

Usability: there is no physical keypad so making calls is really tough. imagine if u are driving and u wanna make qucik call. u pull out phone from case. then dial number from touch screen keypad. not good idea.

Build : phone build looks solid, overall phone design looks good and durable.

Battery backup : worst I ever seen. u use wifi for few hours and battery is gone ! after 7-8 hours of normal usage battery is totally drained out.

Resale value: this was a major shock !. I bought this phone for 15900/- and within 24 hrs I went to subhisha to change to SE K790i and he refused to change. then he said he can take it as used set.

and he evaluated it to 9500/- about 40% less within 24 hrs.

I asked same exchange offer at hotspot. They to said they cant give more than 10, 000/-

It was a shock ! Then I sold this phone to my friend for 1000/- less and bought SE W810i.

and I am  veri happy with W810i

The phone itself might be good, but what is the use if you can not use it's feature. The sales guy of I-mate who was placed at a mobile shop at Agrani-Noida cheated me in all possible ways. Whatever features I checked for, he said for Nokia & sony - it is not available & confirmed all for I-mate. When I checked, whether he is from I-mate, he said he is from the shop & not I-mate. Later I found it wrong. He confirmed the phone has excel & word by default, when he could not show me, he said he was not able to operate correctly. Believing him I still bought the phone worth 20000.

Later he completely denied of this feature. I complained to I-mate head office as well as their local, I-mate head office response was horrible. The local office responded positive but could not really help as word & excel is not there in the phone. Now what do I do with the investment? The service rep although came but service is still poor, as my problem is not resolved & even the phone is not so user friendly! I suggest, no one should go for this brand of phones, the company cheats!!

Having a windows based is a smart choice

You can got for other nokia phones in this range also,

But having a windows based has its pros and cons

Pros:

  1. Most of the software you download, including the free ones you get from getjar.com work on your mobile

  2. get a gprs connection and you can use msn messenger fully at a cheaper rate, it takes the least downloads and enjoy it as free messaging, just paying for gprs which is cheap

  3. come to think of it, if everyone gets gprs and have msn messenger on mobile, there would be no need of messaging and would be cheaper

  4. though there are wap sites like wap.e-messenger.net which let you access msn messenger from mobile, they are slow and take more download as they have to download the page, but msn messenger on the imate just takes the text the people are sending to you which is small

  5. the 2 mega pixel camera, makes a camera feel worth it, great pics as good as digital cameras, add a 512 memory card, and record your video in mp4 version, yes u can record it as 3gp too but why when u have a clearer superior quality mp4 to go with

  6. Syncing it with your PC could never be easier using microsoft active sync , u can sync your contacts, your calender you emails, tasks, favcorites, music ,everythin u like by just a click,

  7. browse through my computer like an external drive

  8. big screen, great pixels, makes you happy everytime you see your mobile phone, easy to use

9.bluetooh, infra red, wifi (great wifi reception)

  1. windows media player, great music quality

  2. you can even get skype on this smartphone ;)

cons

  1. expensive, but compared to a nokia phone in the same range this is better

2.hard to think of

  1. 2G device, not 3G

4.no fm radio

PDA Phone - is it the future??
Mar 18, 2006 07:53 PM3470 Views

Convergence: you want to have one device which does one thing rather than have 3 devices in your various pockets. Smart phone has the biggest advantage in convergence. It is a combined product in PDA and a phone, and also many features of a PC. I have a O2 XDA II mini - bought from Ebay, and I am really happy about it. Phone - it is a very good mobile phone - contact details are beautifully stored. Writing SMS is a breeze, because of the transcriber and key board features. If you are connected to your PC, you can send the SMS by using the key board of the PC. The SMS both incoming and outgoing are stored in the PC Outlook folder - so can be used as mail and forwarded and vice versa, i.e. mails can be forwarded as SMS. This is another Wow in convergence. Since you are used to number pads in phones, and dialing no is instinctive to us - sometimes you miss the number pad, as everything is on touch screen. So you have to take out your stylus and punch the no. - so sometimes this seems like a limitation.

Pocket PC Features: Since it is a Windows OS, every windows feature makes it very usable. Word Excel, power point - every thing you need for a meeting is always in your pocket. You can go into any meeting, without your lap top if you know what is to be carried - it can be all put in your pocket PC. There are great applications and games available. I travel almost 2 hours to office and back. Now time flies as I use the music player (Real Player, good enough quality - may not be like a Ipod, but quite good, better than normal walkmans and thumbdrive music players) to listen to music while I play Sudoku on the pocket PC. Time really flies. When I travel in foreign land where it is difficult to pronounce the various addresses, instead of carrying pieces of print outs, I carry the important mails in my pocket PC - and I just take it out and show to the cab driver. With GPRS enabled you can read mail any where - you can connect to your mail server and download mails which gives pop features like GMAIL, or other POP stuff which is open. You can connect to the internet and browse. You can put in a small card which has WiFi connecting features and browse without GPRS. Really it gives you the feeling of always staying connected - while you travel - if you have the right infrastructure - you can always stay connected. Though it does not have the push features of blackberry, but GPRS connectivity makes it better than black berry because with GPRS you can down load and browse any mails. The interface is much much friendly than black berry. Searching out mail or any stuff is much easy because of the windows search features. And the best thing is that you do not have to open your lap top for these small things, they are always under your control and in your pocket.

In short if you like gadgets, and you like to stay connected all the time, this is the future - it is everything you want to be in one - is in one - and you are under control. Synch is very fast, much better than Palm, and your appointments everything is always in your pocket - it synchs within 2 mins at the max.

I am really happy I spend 20k in buying such a device.............................

Smartphone 2 - bad product
Nov 13, 2005 10:51 PM3782 Views

The smartphone 2 is one of the worst product that I have ever used. Even though the screen resolution is good and the features are good it has very bad support and after sales service. The phone is very good to hold and has a nice look. But it has the following short comings

a. Configuring the phone for GPRS is a pain and does not support the basic GPRS provided by Indian Operators

b. The joystick is bad. I had my joystick replaced twice... after which my keypad went bad. Even the authorised dealer in India were not able to solve the problem. I later found out from the dealer that this is a manufacturing defect and the company is not doing anything about it.

c. Its dealer network is extremely limited atleast in India.

Otherwise the phone is very simple to use. The operating system windows mobile 2003 is quite good and the software has good support from Microsoft.

I-Mate Smartphone2=Really Smart
Feb 18, 2005 11:50 AM3951 Views

I was planning to buy a nice kewl cellphone to upgrade from my older one(I had NOkia 6600 before),so naturally it should be better than my older phone, and getting a peice better than nokia 6600 in March 2004 was quite difficult coz tht time smartphones were quite new kid on the block and expensive too.

But I trusted i-mate smartphone and bought one for Rs.36000/- very expensive though, but I think, its worth it.

I opened the box and yippee, a nice sleek phone ready to be explored.I switched it on,took some time hmmm abt 2 mins, but as they say Sabar ka Phal hamesha meetha hota hain!! fitted right here.

Initially I felt that I had quite wasted 36 grands on this stupid little gadget but as days passed by and I got familiar with its functions I came to know that it is worth lakhs because the phone not only organised meetings and reminded me my appointments as every phone does,it would automatically go to silent mode on that time which I stored as meeting time in calender,so got it why it is smart??

NO therez a lot more to come.

# It also plays Mp3 and come along with a datacable-cum usb charger-cum-car charger-cum home charger and a stereo headset which gives u a theatre like effect when u listen to mp3s ,and a cool leather pouch to store it on the move, and 1 cd and a manual.

# It also has bluetooth as well as infrared for high speed data transfer.

#And the most important the customer support is tremendous.

#The Company itself gives software upgrades for free from time to time, now isn't tht gr8??

But the battery is a bit weak and goes even worser when u play mp3 or use bluetooth, but who cares if u have a recharger.

# It also has and website on which u can register and get free stuff for u smartphone like games, ringtones ,applications

# It also has a Word, excel, powerpoint and microsoft outlook viewer. And Msn messenger and internet explorer

# And yes a camera with unlimited video recording and the clearity on it is awesome 65k colour screen is too good

Now this is what Smart spells out!!

What Say?

So go ahead and buy it without fear of thinking tht is it a good phone or is it worth the amount it is charged etc etc.

Highly recommended

I'm tremendously excited about the future of the Smartphones - I've been using one for the past two months,

I am gadget mad and have owned my fair share are Palm, Pocket PCs and mobiles to be able to form a fair opinion.

I purchased my i-Mate Smartphone the first day they came out. Overall I am very pleased with the product.

The i-Mate Smartphone is above all a great mobile phone based on Microsoft's Windows Powered Smartphone operating system. You can expect to find all the basic and advanced phone functions on this Smartphone, but what makes it the smartest phone available on the market today is the Windows Powered software that lets you E-Mail, Instant Message, surf the Web, listen to music, play games, and much, much more. Having Microsoft Windows as its operating system is an ease to sync information from Outlook to Smartphone and back, synchronization is limited to Contacts, Calendar, Tasks and Inbox.

The display is a crisp 65k colors in TFT screen LCD, but there's no font smoothing, though, so jaggies in the fonts is immediately noticeable. Watching videos encoded exclusively for the SP is great! Its only bogged down by the constant turning off backlight -- if only Microsoft added a backlight feature in the Windows Media Player version of the Smartphone 2002, watching videos is more pleasant.

The keypad layout of the SP is easily adaptable and quite easier to use contributing to its large buttons and neat configuration. The voice recorder and volume control buttons are located to the left of the Smartphone which is a little cumbersome to use for right handed folks.

The ability to turn the radio (signal or network) off is a plus, since going to an institution where one should turn off their mobile phones and using just the PDA features of it is definitely important. The speakerphone feature is a must if having both of your hands full.

The Secure Digital (SD) slot is also a great addition to the SAP since one can buy or upgrade memory as long as it is supported by the Smartphone.

With its ability to install user-installable applications and games, it all goes down with third-party developers to make the necessary software and Microsoft's promotions to offer the Windows powered Smartphone 2002 to mobile phone operators -- its a great offering for business and casual users.

Overall, the i-Mate Smartphone is a neat, streamlined and simple device that the user will quickly adapt overtime.

Specifications:

Microsoft Windows Powered

Emails and Internet

MSN Messenger

Picture Messaging

Games, Video and Music

Large Colour Transflective LCD Screen

32MB ROM 16MB RAM

SD Card slot for extra memory

Triband

Conclusion:

It's a great device and can almost mimic everything a desktop PC can do. It's perfect and if I'm honest unless Microsoft upgrades the software, include Bluetooth and a built in camera (not that I want that), do something about Java and get a few more big operators/phone manufacturers to take up the Smartphone platform.
