The iPhone 8 is a good phone, but that does not mean you should buy it.
It's the fastest phone of 2017 and much of 2018, but that's the only superior thing about it. The screen? It looks good on its own but can't touch the Galaxy line or most other rivals. The design? It's sort of iconic I guess, but it doesn't look at all cutting edge. It has nice materials and the new glass back looks nice. Yet, put simply, it looks old overall. The older Galaxy S8 destroys it, and even the S7 looks better.
The mediocrity of the phone compared to its rivals is one thing. But Apple's greed and laziness means no one should spend money on this. Although this phone costs more than almost every rival, Apple deliberately uses lower quality components to make more money.
Something you don't read in most reviews is that the wifi capability of the phone is bested by $30 ZTE trash phones from the dollar store and several years' old budget phones like the Moto G4, let alone its similarly priced contemporaries. Go to the edge of a wifi network and you'll see the iPhone 8 drop signal while those cheap phones still hold two bars. The iPhone 8 also has worse cellular reception than almost every phone available. As with the wifi, another phone will have cell reception while the iPhone 8 searches hopelessly for a signal. That is inexcusable for a "top end" phone.
And about that screen? Yes, it's nice in its own way, but it could be nicer. Even if Apple didn't want to go with OLED they could've improved the screen. They can talk endlessly about "retina" displays (and they will... That's part of their marketing machine), but a full HD 1080 display would obviously be better, let alone the full HD+ resolution offered by nearly every phone priced at $200 or more. Why hasn't Apple changed its resolution since 2011 (yes, 2011!)? They haven't changed it because it saves them money, yet they still charge the highest prices.
And what about that design? They haven't changed it since 2014! Why? Because it saves them money, although they still charge the same ridiculous price. What would happen if Samsung didn't change its flagship design for four years? They would be considered the world's worst company. Apple does it and people say, "They make their designs classy so they last."
Is it horrible to own and use an iPhone 8? No, it is not. It's nice. Should you spend your money on it? No. Apple doesn't deserve it. The iPhone 8 is just its lazy cash grab.
