Guruvayoorappans Mischievous behavior on fellow hu
Aug 17, 2023 02:27 AM 690 Views (via Mobile)

Heres a glimpse from my perspective.

The whole story happens in Guruvayoor, which is famous for Guruvayoor temple where lord krishna resides. Balamani is a maid at Ambalapattu tharavad where Unniyamma and her family live. Eventhough they live very close to Guruvayoor temple, balamani isnt able to reach out because of the chores she had to perform. Her life makes a turn when Manu, the grandson of unniyamma arrives at Ambalapattu from abroad. Balamani had once seen a dream of marrying a wealthy and handsome guy which inturn was manu. The chemistry between manu and bala works out making them fall in love. But the twist happens when ravathy the mother of manu arrives and later fix manus marriage with family friends daughter. This becomes a hard time for both bala and manu as they now realise that seperation is the only option, but were unaware of the Destiny. This was when balamani meets Unni for the first time . He is the son of neighborhood janaki. Balamani tells her sorrow to unni as he is the only one to listen and advised that lord guruvayoorappan will never leave his devotee if the devotion is in its purest form. The movie is filled with multiple twist and turns and one is when manus fiancé run away with the guy she had an affair with which brings back little hope in Both manu and bala. Unniyamma finally decides to get manu married to bala and the family gets accepted to this decision. Bala wished to go to guruvayoor with manu after marriage but due to VIP visit, there were strict restrictions to enter. It was when bala and manu decided to meet unniyettan next door. Janaki tells them that unni had fever and is resting, balamani made her way to upstairs and later realise that he was not the unni which she had spoken with all these times. Bala gets confused and immediately runs to guruvayoor temple with manu, The major twist in the whole movie is when bala realise that the unniyettan with whom bala was talking with was non other than Lord Krishna himself. Eventhough bala was not able to visit guruvayoorappan in the temple, he himself came to meet bala everytime.

Nandanam - Makes you believe in miracles

The movie "Nandanam" is about a girl Bala(Navya Nair) who is a maid and her struggles in life. It is about how she staunchly believes in Lord Guruvayoor Appan(Lord Krishna) and how her belief magically turns her life into a beautiful one.

There comes a time when there is nobody for her and lord in form of a friend comes into her life and gets her life sorted. This friend also helps her get the man she loves, into her life miraculously

The film has got great music with singer Chitra's one of the biggest hits- "Karmukilvarnande chundil"

Both Navya nair and Prithviraj have performed exceptionally well in the movie.

A must watch movie. I insist

It has a heart touching story and a team of dedicated artists.

Heroin Navya nair performed as a traditional village girl in this movie. It is the image setting movie for hero Pridhvi raj.

This is a love story created with village back ground and traditional malayalam family back ground. Most of the songs in this picture are really great and marvellous. All the dialogues of Navya nair is separate slang and tone it gives a natural feelings for the movie. Songs and performance of this movie will excite anyone throughout the film.

Nandanam movie is very great film based on faith on God. This is giving great message to everyone. This movie is about Balamani who is housemaid and  Manu who is Bangalore based software engineer. This movie is giving importance to the female character. In this film everyone acted very well. I like Kumbidi(Jagathi sreekumar) very well. He really acted well. I enjoyed a lot with the comedy parts.

This film is mixed with songs, humor, romance, emotions and faith on God. it is ending with miracle of God.It is very close to our life. We will get message that everything is possible with God and we can see God in peoples in difficult situation.

It is my life experience
Mar 24, 2006 02:03 PM 7782 Views

I saw Nandanam for the first time before two years. I loved that movie at that time itself. When I saw the movie recently on Asianet, it reminded me of my own experiences with God Krishna. It is true that those who do not have anyone will be helped by God. Many may say that it is a fantacy. But in my experience and opinion, it is true that God helps at times of difficulty.

I had such an experience during the last quarter of 2005, which prompted me to write this. I am also like Balamany, who calls 'Krishna' always and says her sorrows/happiness to Krishna. God himself appeared in a man's form and helped me in a difficult situation.

When I saw the movie recently on TV, it reminded me of my experience and I was so immersed in the movie, that I got up only when the movie was over.

From that time, I wanted to convey Mr. Ranjit, the director of this movie a 'hearty congratulations' for making such a good movie, and when I saw this site, I decided to post my opinion.

Karmukil Varnante Chundil..
Nov 09, 2005 01:45 PM 28792 Views

This song has haunted me for many days.. And has moved me to tears many a time..

I have tried a very rough translation of this song. But I doubt if the English translation retains even a millionth of the bhavam and depth of emotion of the Malayalam words.. This song is immortalized by all the 3 elements - lyrics (Girish Puthencherry), Music (our beloved Raveendran Mash) and playback (The nightingale.. Chitra).

The original:

---------------------

Karmukil Varnante chundil

Cherum odakkuzhalinte ullil

Veenurangunnoru shriragame ninne

pulkiyunarthaan marannu kannan

Njaanen mizhinalam anayatherichum

Neerum nenjakam akilayi pukachum

Vadum karalthadam kanneeray nanachum

Ninne thedinadannu thalarnnu krishna

Neeyen nombaramariyumo shyamavarna..

Ninte nandanavrindavanathil

Pookkum parijatathinte kombil

Varum janmathilengilum shaure

Oru poovayi viriyaan kazhinjuvengil

Ninte kalkal veenadiyuvaan kazhinjuvengil..

The translation:

-------------------------

In the flute that joins the lips of the one who has the colour of the dark cloud, O the gently asleep Shriragam, the Lord forgot to awaken you...

Lighting the lamp in my eyes, taking care that it will not flicker and go out,

Burning my heart to smoke like the camphor,

Wetting my dry cheeks with tears,

I am seeking you, O Krishna..

Will you know my passion, O Shyamavarna?

In your garden of vrindavan,

In the branch of the flowering parijatha,

Atleast in the next janmam, O Lord,

I wish I could be a flower that blooms,

And fall on your beloved feet..

Nandanam is a timeless classic. It tells a tale of love and devotion. I had heard the song well before seeing the movie and I experienced what real Bhakti is, when Chitra's voice soared higher and higher, and Balamani burning with pain..

An Excellent Movie

I am not a Malayalee, but I can understand and speak to average good rating.

(Thanks to my late Nair mama and late Sundaramma auntie-who taught me this language when I was 11 years!).

Every one acted so well that it is the only movie that could be seen with all your family members without getting embarrassment at any vulgar scene!

<Navya Nair> acted very well and naturally, and so also Pridthvi. Unniama chraracter is so nice that it recollected my memories of childhood with my Ammamma!

The background music is simple and always with Guruvayoorappan songs and slokas of Leela Chechi and Daasettan!

My special appreciations to Unniamma, Unniattan roll platers.

The producers and the Director and each every member of his team deserve a pat!

A. S. Murty

I request any of the malayalee friends to send me the English translation of the song

NANDANAM --> Perfection of a director
Sep 02, 2005 07:18 PM 7059 Views

Unfortunate!! that this movie was not a super hit in the box-office. The altercation between the producer and distributor after the film preview, delayed the release of such a nice movie. If you believe in the existence of GOD, you will like this movie. Take my word on it.

The theme of movie is the help offered by god towards his devotee. This movie was released when I was in college. I went with my college mates to watch this movie on the release day itself. We were waiting for this movie, as the outcome of preview was very good.

In that year, State award jury proclaimed that there were no good movies to give the best movie award. The news was shocking to a big percentage of people who watched the movie. Navya nair has done a very good role. Aravinder has done the role of Krishna equally well.

But it’s the faultless flow of movie, which remains in our minds once we move out of the theatre make this movie a class apart. Kudos to Renjith... A very good director to Malayalam industry who can be compared to Padmarajan..

Cheers

Magic of love
Aug 25, 2004 11:06 AM 8154 Views

Although this movie released 2 or 3 years ago, at that time I did not show any interest to watch this movie thinking that it was the arty, serious type. How wrong I was!

Again this time, I did not go ahead and take initiative to watch this. This was the movie Kallada Travels bus ran during my journey from Guruvayur to Bangalore. So, I had no option but to watch it. Now I must say - Thank you Kallada for atleast occassionally playing such good movies in your buses.

Coming to movie, where should I start?

Its touchy to see the character Balamani displaying pure love towards the person she loves. Also touching is her devotion to Lord Krishna. And actress Navya plays the character with aplomb. It was said that her acting in this film brought her upto the finals of the national award selection but unfortunately she didn't get award.

Prithviraj does his role well too.

Kudos to director Ranjith. May he continue to make such movies in the future too.

This movie restores your faith in miracles. It makes you believe that God only wants to help you & all you need to do is be receptive to his blessings.

MS member Kurupsindhu told it correctly - This is one of the only Indian movies where love is potrayed in its purest form.

And there's another aspect about this movie which puts it in special place in my heart. Many aspects of this film are strikingly similar to incidents in my personal life. Thats why I have a soft corner for this movie.

Lord Guruvayurapa and his ways. I salute you, O Lord!

Love in its purest forms....

I have been an ardent admirer of Malyalam movies since I don’t know when. Being a mallu, I have been lucky to have understood the language and equally the films. Staying away from Kerala means missing a good chunk of movies. And I never let go a chance of compensating this drawback whenever I visit Kerala.

Nandanam :

Do dreams come true ? Yes, it definitely does. This movie is about celebrations of dreams & devotion. Not rich in terms of story, but this film scores on its presentation.

Its all about a maid servant falling in love with the rich grandson of the grand old lady of the Tharavadu (the ancestral home) where she is employed to look after the lady. The story is set in a place called Guruvayoor which is the abode of Lord Krishna (Guruvayoorappan). Guruvayoor is known for the Guruvayoor temple. Her devotion to Guruvayoorappan gets her this job as she sees herself going to the temple everyday for the Nirmalyam and other poojas. Does she get to visit her Guruvayoorappan ?

So coming to the dream part, is that she falls for the rich grandson of her employer much before she actually sees him. And the time when he stands at their doorstep fully drenched in rain..makes her world go round. Does her dream come true ?

All stands to be seen to be believed. As it happens everywhere she is said to leave the house by the elders of the house and the times where she stands tough against her emotions of boundless love depicts her as the epitome of patience. Above that her non-complaining attitude even when she is shown the door and her readily accepting the fate while making her partner understand the situation makes you feel as to why the world is so harsh and ignorant towards love. Does she past the test of times ?

Talking about devotion to Lord Krishna. The scenes where she is shown talking to the Lord are so easy and real. It seems two friends are talking of which one is a chatterbox and other is a listener. She is shown sharing her sorrows, happiness, anger, love alike with the photo of the Lord in her room. Seems to be too ridiculous but the presentation and the realism shown just reduces that feeling and takes the viewer into the stride. Does her Lord show her the real path ?

Maybe the story would sound too clichéd to be believed but set up in a very mallu background, such things do happen in the rural areas of Kerala where lot of people believe in God but believe in his miracles equally. They claim to have seen miracles happen.

I say this as I get to hear a lot of them from my little cousin when I visit them. This depicts the innocence and the unconditional love which they say moves the Almighty. Maybe this stands true in the movie and also in their lives which we urbanites may never understand as we feel we are too modern to believe this. Sometimes for a change even I do undergo this feeling when I visit the 4 temples that surround my hubby’s ancestral house in Kerala and that feeling of devotion is just Godly. The last time that I visited Kerala, I remember getting tears in my eyes when I stood in front of the Shiv Temple & the Devi temple waiting for the priest to open the door to just get the glimpse. The atmosphere just influenced me..

Performances :

Bala Mani, The Maid Servant : Played by Navya Nair, She was amazing and suited the character perfectly. She was awarded the state award for her role in Nandanam. Not so great in looks but she still glowed and made the film totally hers.

Manu, The Rich Grandson : played by Prithviraj, son of a great actor Sukumaran. He looks great and performs well too. Shows a lot of promise and has the ability to become a great actor.

Kaviyoor Ponamma, The rich grandmom: She has been the ideal mother to Mohanlal, Mamooty and almost every actor/actoresses. Now she is the good old grandmom. She looks gracious and respectable. Every word that she utters delivers the emotion of love and care.

Manu’s mother : Played by Revathi, She looks beautiful and brilliant. Though she has been described as a tough going woman, who single handedly brings up Manu as she is widowed at an early age. As the movie progresses her character is shown to be too feeble to stand up to the aggressions of the fellow characters. But she still shines in her role.

Music :

Melodious music by Ravindran. Each and every song is a gem in itself. The album is a mixture of classical, romantic and devotional songs. The devotional songs are sung beautifully by Chitra. It soothes your innerself. Even the romantic ones sung by Sujatha and M.G. Sreekumar are hummable ones. K.J.Yesudas’s classical ones are a delight to the ones who has a taste with classical music. But my personal favourites are the devotional ones sung in the praise of Lord Krishna which are : (Don’t ask me the meaning, as my mallu is not so strong)

‘Karmuggil Varnande Chundil….’ & “Mauliyil Mailpeeli Charthi…”

So, believe in your Lord and believe in your dreams as well.

NANDANAM - THE CELEBRATION OF FANTASY
May 10, 2004 02:59 AM 14829 Views

Nandanam is the saga of LOVE in one of its purest forms – Love between creature and creator. This makes the film a pleasure to watch. Director Renjith can boast of this film for his entire career.

Plotted amongst few ordinary characters of a Kerala ancestral home (Tharavadu), Nandanam says (sings?) the story of love of a housemaid with her master. Balamony (Navya Nair) falls in love with her young master, Manu (Pritvi Raj). Bala’s life is a tragedy – suicide of parents and health problems of younger sister and above all with the ultimate penury. She found no one but God only to befriend. Nevertheless she is full of life and smart, trying not to show her pangs outside. Our hero is going to the US after few weeks and now he came to this house to spend some days with his dear grandmother (Kaviyoor Ponnamma). Arrival of Manu to her masters’ home brings dreams to Bala and fantasy to the film. She realizes the boy, whom she saw as her bridegroom in dream, is no one but him.

The love starts, even after realising all the inequalities. Unaware of the new relations, Manu’s mother (Revathi) finalizes a relation for her son. In his own words, his Amma is everything for him; the film narrates shortly and effectively the sacrifices she did for her son. Too weak to deny her, the pair decides to part. Once again Bala realizes she deserves no dreams and the trauma even forces her to think of suicide. Then enters handsome Unni (Aravindan), bringing solace and surprises to her lonely moments. He helps her smile again. He foretells that her marriage with Manu will consummate in near future.

What is new in this story? The crux is that the love story between Manu and Bala is only a background. Real eternal love – stronger, stranger and warmer – is somewhere else. Yes, a love each one of us is expecting to happen in our life. Watch out the movie for that surprise!

The film is a celebration of fantasy. Fantasy is sown in the very first scene and it flowers after the entrance of Unni. The picturesque village of Kerala poses as an ideal plot for love, pain and fantasy. Watch the scenes of a heartbroken Bala walking through the fallow paddy fields or of her meeting with Unni in the greenish backyards.

The beauty of film also lays in its climax, where the bride Bala realizes the truth. I could FEEL it.

The characterization is almost perfect. Even the minor characters of co-servants and distant relatives (see the uncle who complains for each and everything) are well defined, which is not a simple thing in the contemporary Indian film.

I would say the actors have done a commendable job. Even being newcomers to the industry, Pritvi Raj and Navya Nair have done superb portrayals of her characters. Latter got State Award for her performance and she definitely deserves it. Revathi, Innocent, Kaviyoor Ponnama, Vijaya Lekshmi, Sree Raman, Jyothirmayi etc have done their parts well. Jagathi’s character is not needed in the story, but he gives some good moments of humour. But if someone needs special mention, that is Aravindan, as he was really really believable as our special friend, Unni. Without him, the film wouldn't have been a commercial success.

The songs have become very popular in Kerala and are of long-lasting kind. Matching to the core of the theme, it could be counted as one among the best musics of Raveendran. Any need to say about the voices of Yesudas and Chitra?

Above all, the movie never drags. If some scenes could have been done better with more imagination (like mode of revealing the suspense), it would have been counted as a classic in Malayalam Film History.

In short I could sense this film with heart and Tagore answers why.

“At the immortal touch of thy hands my little heart loses its limits in joy and gives birth to utterance ineffable.

Thy infinite gifts come to me only on these very small hands of mine. Ages pass, and still thou pourest, and still there is room to fill.”

- Gitanjali.
