Do you love vengeance? If Yes, perhaps Kanal is a film for you. But like Revenge it is not just served cold, but also tasteless in most of its parts. Before starting, let me confess that I'm a die-hard Mohanlal fan, like every malayali, I believe that he is one of the greatest actors India has ever produced if not the greatest. But certainly his brand of movies have seen a quality crunch, the same can be said of an entire class of Malayalam cinema post that golden age of the 90's and early 2000's.
The Plot of the movie as I have mentioned earlier is based on Retribution. The movie goes berserk in the first half itself and loses its steam leaving many questions unanswered and many glaring loopholes in the script. Mohanlal plays the charming John David who meets an executive of a TV Channel Anantha Raman, played by Anoop Menon, but theirs is not a chance meeting, it has been set up very carefully, what do the planners know, what do they want and what is Johns Role in it, this forms the crux of the story.
Mohanlal excels in his role as John David yet again, but it is nothing close to the style of vengeance he showed in Bhramaram, maybe the script itself did not have that much scope, I hate it when directors use great actors in stupid scripts, it is just becoming a regularity these days. Anoop Menon also happens to impress me, but only in parts. Other actors including the ever so comic Innocent plays roles restricted by the lackluster script.
The Direction is ok, while the Songs are so bad that I wanted to go out to have some refreshments rather than listening to it. Malayalam songs have gone downhill since the beginning of this decade.
Overall, the movie is nothing spectacular but can be watched once, that too strictly for Mohanlal fans, others can keep away if required. Watch Bhramaram instead.
