I was using Toshiba m500, which is a high end multimedia laptop for over three years without any hiccup when all of a sudden it when dead, Diagnosis revealed that the board had short circuited due to over current. It was a time nearing my thesis presentation and I faced a lot of issues due to it. so when I went in the market for a replacement laptop, reliability was at the top of the list and also as I was nearing the end of my student year I wanted a professional looking laptop also as the replacement was sudden and unplanned I was bit short on budget.
After doing some research I found the thinkpad e430 with i5 processor and dos perfectly. Thinkpad is a name associated with business laptop, once a product of ibm it is now under lenovo, and ithas value value than other lenovo products. The additional features on the product were also amazing. I visited a local dealer of lenovo, that is how bought the thinkpad e430.
The product I bought had 3rd gen Intel i5 3320 processor 2 gb ddr3 ram(upgraded to 4gb) and 500gb sata hard disk. e430 is also available in 3rd gen i3 and i7 and I also have seen models with 2nd gen I series processors. It comes with a finger print reader. The scroll pad has three extra buttons at top, which acts as left right and middle mouse buttons along with there is the usual left are right buttons also at the bottom of the pad, although as they are part of the pad and not separate buttons one doesn't easily spot it. The touch pad supports multi-touch, also there is the trade mark red trackpoint, even though kept for tradition is still functional, in short there is a plethora of options for navigation even without connection the mouse. The display is 14 inch with 1366x768 resolution and is anti-glare, it is a pretty good display. The keyboard is also of nice quality and easy to type, A feature one will easily note is the fn key and left ctrl are switched when compared to normal keyboard all the f1-f12 operation is also reversed, that is the other feature of fn keys like volume up down and brightness etc are default, which is a nice feature. The product has 3 usb 3 ports and 1 usb 2 and the usb 2 is always on aids in usb sleep and charge, The various other standard port are also available. Overall most of the hardware required is present.
The system came with dos, the drivers for windows are available online. although I personally use ubuntu and the various features of the lap are fully supported.
Coming to cons the major one is the price, it doesn't have the performance of a similary priced entertainment laptop, though this is explained by its better built quality and also brand value. also due to the built quality it is on a heavier side. Another cost factor is warranty, extension for 1 year cost nearly 8k including tax and 15k for 2 years. that is ridiculous for a 40k laptop and even high lap only cost 5-6 k for 2 year extension and also ive heard spares are costly out of warranty and hard to come by Luckily for me no trouble has been caused in 2 years of use. Another is absence of caps lock display, which is a major problem when entering passwords . not only caps lock light but except for on light that blinks when in sleep and a lan port light there are no other light indicators.
Overall if you are someone looking for business laptop with built quality and is short on budget I would suggest you this. Else there many other options for you.
