IBM Thinkpad R52 Reviews

"The IBM ThinkPad R52: A Classic Business Laptop B
May 09, 2023 07:34 PM 329 Views (via Mobile)

The IBM ThinkPad R52 is a laptop computer that was released in 2005 by IBM. It was part of the ThinkPad R series, which was designed for business use and featured durable construction and security features.

The R52 was powered by Intel's Pentium M processor, which was popular at the time for its energy efficiency and performance. It had a 15-inch display with a resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels, which was typical for laptops of its era. It also had a variety of ports and connections, including USB, VGA, Ethernet, and a modem.

One notable feature of the R52 was its ThinkPad TrackPoint pointing device, which was a small red nub in the middle of the keyboard that allowed users to control the cursor without moving their hands from the typing position. This feature was a hallmark of the ThinkPad line and was popular among users who preferred it to touchpads.

The R52 also had a reputation for durability and reliability, thanks in part to its rugged design and IBM's reputation for building high-quality business laptops. It was also easy to service and upgrade, which made it a popular choice for IT departments in larger organizations.

Overall, the IBM ThinkPad R52 was a solid laptop that was well-suited for business use in its time. While it may not have the latest features or specifications by today's standards, it remains a classic example of the reliable and functional laptops that made the ThinkPad line so popular among business users.

The ThinkPad R52 test system we received came in at 12.4 inches wide, 10.2 inches deep, and 1.3 inches thick and weighed 5.9 pounds-a moderate size and weight for a budget laptop with a 14.1-inch screen. The notebook draws AC power from a demure, 0.8-pound, blackboard-eraser-shaped adapter.

The ThinkPad R52 includes some of the ThinkPad line's trademark design features. Sturdy metal hinges tether the system's lid to the bottom, making the screen a bit less subject to breakage. The ThinkPad R52 also features IBM's traditional red eraser-head pointing stick, with a flat, tactile top that we prefer to the smooth, rounded tops on other pointing sticks. The stick has two mouse buttons of its own, which sit beneath the spacebar and sandwich a handy scroll button. Below the buttons lie a somewhat small touch pad and two more mouse buttons. The ThinkPad R52's comfortable keyboard is another IBM staple, with keys in places familiar to desktop users. The business-minded system doesn't provide as many extra buttons and controls as a multimedia notebook, but it does include four convenient buttons for turning volume up and down, muting the sound, and accessing support information.

I have been using this laptop since may 2006 when I bought this from singapore in 1800 SGD and there is no issue with this laptop todate. as per my experience with this laptop I furnish following

Good

1) very strong built and reliable

2) good battery life

3) good cpu speed

4) low power requirement and low heating

5) Long life LCD(no spots till date)

And not so bad

1) small hdd (40GB)

2) LCD display is not very clear

3) no DVD writer

4) no bluetooth, no card reader

5) no windows key

Overall I will give this machine 90% marks as I used to run it 24 hours a day , 7 days a week and 365 days a year (actualy my laptop is on since 2007 Dec). It has been 3 years since I am using this and no major hardware/software failure as such. I will recommend this for normal and business use but people looking for gaming and multimedia should opt other models.

About e manuals
Mar 17, 2009 03:15 PM 10886 Views

We have purchased 32 IBM Laptops of both brand (R51 & R52) while supplying the laptops, e user manuals have been received with each laptop.

We have delivered the laptops to the Judges to use the same. The users are ignorant and they not know how to use the user manual and how to read it. Hence hereafter if you are issuing e manuals along the laptops you assume that the person who is going to use may or may not know to use the e manuals properly.

In tamil nadu and some other parts of the government officers the users actually using are more of ignorant and they do not know how to use the e manuals in the CD's. So please kindly provide the user manuals in the physical or printed format. so that anybody can access. Moreover, if the power is off and the battery is fault means the usage of the CD is not worthy and above all, if the CD is not in a condition of usage then the use of CD is not done and as such the purpose of issuing cd based user manuals will not be effective.

Also, the user may be ignorant of the language ENGLISH then actual user who is expert in regional/local/vernacular language cannot use the same. also please provide the details of the usage in the local vernacular or the user preferred language. so that the very purpose of issuing cds based user manual and language based pamphlets may be reached.

IBM Think Pad by the time I bought was Lenovo , but I guess like everyone here I also remembered it as a IBM thinkpad and decided to buy it . I have had the laptop for almost 2 years and more and currently now it is undergoing a minor operation :)

The model came with pre installed Windows XP Personal Edition , a DvD Player software and the regular utilities . With around 40 GB it was more than a normal laptop and I had the oppurtunity to use it almost as a desktop - watching movies , playing games and of course take it to my travels outside city , slept on it ... yeah ;) there was once an incident when I was travelling on a allnighter bus from north bengal and I didnt have a pillow and this thinkpad inside its leather pouch acted as my pilliow for quite sometime .

As a laptop it did have its limitations of being a smaller screen , and being an IBM R52 it was somewhat heavy. But the money I spent - I would say it was well worth .

One of the problems I have however currently faced ( which could happen elsewise I guess ) , is that after long torture on the laptop ( bumps , fall from hand , sleeping on it ;) ) , the HDD has finally died / crashed ... and in such a way that IBM Support told me to not hope for its data or the HDD being repaired. Now , this was a painful process - IBM doesn't check a machine without an advance draft of 1750 ( you can not pay cash , check or credit card ) , they just took a look at it for 5 minutes and told me , that it is dead beyond repair ( the HDD only ) . And getting a replacement HDD from IBM is 7600 Rs :(

Treat on the lap

I am writing the review after almost 2-1/2 years of ownerhip, although thinking of doing the same for quite some time. Absolutely delighted to have this product.

Thinkpads are generally considered costlier than HPs, Compaqs etc, but IBM appeals customers thru their TCO (Total Cost of Ownership), which I found true in these 30 months. R-Series is typically less costier than the T-series. The main ostensible difference is the lesser weight of T-Models due to use of lighter materials like Magnesium.

When I went for the decision to buy the laptop at Ahmedabad, a lot of offers were made by various vendors. But one demo by the IBM Silvertouch Sales Manager caught my eye - he lifted the open laptop from top of the screen and proved the sturdiness which the steel hinges provided to the Thikpads. This manouvre is required a lot in day to day usage. He showed us old Thinkpads with plasctic hinges which developed cracks over a period of time.

Other considerations were a fantastic corporate offer by IBM Lenovo by including DVD Multiburner, Addl 256 MB RAM, Pen drive, OEM Windows XP etc. This may be because of the advent of Core-2 Duo processors in 2006 and these machines were perhaps the last of Pentium M Centrino Machines.

The notebook is an extremely sturdy device, which exudes confidence by following ways :

i) IBM's Thinkadvantage technologies which stop HDD immediately on sensing a shock

ii) A steel roll cage protecting the components from normal wear & tear

iii) A deep-set TFT screen, which protects from pressing against keyboard when shut.

iii) Restore function which would restore the data as well as programmes in case of a crash

iv) 360Degree connectivity thru USB2, Firewire, S-Video, Bluetooth, Wi-fi, IR, Ethernet, Modem, RS

232 output for Projectors; PCMCIA slot; Xpresscard slot; LPT Printer port (which has now virtually disappeared to reduce size)

v) The M/c came with OEM Windows XP Home, which I keep updating.

After the advent of BSNL Broadband on landline with ADSL Modem, I went for their Type-II W-fi modem for 1900/= (substantial saving over BBD Modem + Router cost of approx 5000/=).

I've configured a secure wi-fi connection in  my home. Further, thru windows, I've set up a wireless network between my desktop and the laptop thru the same modem. This gives me great functionality. The Thinkpad responds with extreme smoothness to the wireless connections thru its built in connection manager. The wifi internet connection gives great download speeds (same as desktop) and the networked atmosphere enables me to manage files beteen my 2 PCs.

The Thinkpad has a great Presentation Manager, which comes on as soon as you connect to the Projector, and suggests options for display. I had occasion to test this against an HP Laptop, when I had to make a presentation at our Surat office, where a colleague's HP Laptop was connected to the the LCD, but couldn't transfer the image on to the screen trying all the tricks. I asked him to remove the same and as soon as my R52 was connected, the screen was filled in no time. It may be possible in HP also, but the promptness of the Thinkpad presentation manager was praiseworthy.

The S-Video connection to the TV also proved easy thru the display manager. Movies in my home are watched thru  the Laptop's player only. (I only had to buy S-band & Stereo Audio cables on ebay).

I download my MiniDV videos thru the Firewire port (4-4- Pin cable bought from ebay again). The connection and download is flawless and Microsoft video editing SW lets me edit them too.

The Nokia & Sony Ericsson PC Suite applications ride on my Thinkpad and download all the photoes and videos form our cell phones without even asking. The download is quite fast & smooth thru USB2 port. No complaints there either. Music file uploads are also very smooth.

My Digicam connector is USB1.1., so I use a cardreader to download those photoes thru USB2. The same is extremeenly fast thru the Microsoft application which comes on as soon as I connect the USB cable. Same with pen drives.

I've bought a PCMCIA TV Tuner card. This has converted the laptop into a 15" TV - the second for my home. The reception is not exactly great but functional from a distance. The remote suppied with the TV Card works thru Infrared port placed on the front.

Recently I've upgraded RAM to 1GB (replacing 256 MB), which has furhter boosted the performance.

I've never had occasion to call the service guys, although it carries a 3 year carry-in global warranty, whch is still valid. The Support website is very helpful and I download many an updates to keep the application current. I've even updated the BIOS without any expert help.

One thing I just remembered to mention the dual navigation system (called UltraNav) available on Thinkpads, i.e. a touchpoint and a touchpad, whcih gives great flexiblity.

As can be seen, I've used all the functionality of the machine and am really delighted to have this on my lap.

Prospective buyers must weigh their requirements. Lighter models may not have the 360 Degree connectivity options, and are costlier.

Although this model is no more in production, the Thinkpad legacy continues in their newer R-Series models and this review may help the prospective buyers. Lenovo is continuing the line due to its brand value among the discerning customers, especially Corporates. May not go well with students & young gen due to jazzy campaigns by the competitors. but I've seen people cribbing over their HP, compaq, dell & other machines.

UPDATE : In Dec 2009, the HDD died, not because of any rough usage but because of viruses. Mine died within 3 months of expiry of my anti-virus, which I could not renew somehow. But I had thankfully made recovery CDs which soon restored the original XP Home with all pre-installed SW. The data was saved by a local HW Engineer who removed HDD from Laptop & hooked to another system thru some reader device. Didn't go to Lenovo Service Centre at all and its same as new with new Kaspersky Anti Virus system. Working better than ever.

I think I'll buy another Think whenever the need arises.

Happy with laptop but not with Reliance scheme
Oct 04, 2006 03:07 PM 10280 Views

I recently bought this laptop and am happy with it. It has rugged look and is fast, has good battery life and is heavy but not very much.

But along with the laptop there is this Reliance datacard service that I wanted to talk about. This scheme sucks BIG TIME!

First of all you have to produce a lot of documentation

For some funny reason you have to wait 7 days after buying the laptop

Then when you go to a webworld they will tell you many other documents etc you need to bring

After all the hassle then you have to wait for an address verification

After that the Webworld guy is supposed to call you. He wouldn't call on time.

He will give you a phone number which he will NEVER pick up.

Then you will call the Reliance Customer Care who will forward you all around their call-center and nothing will happen.

Basically go for this stupid scheme only if you are not very particular about getting a quick internet connection. For someone like me, it's a lot irritation and bad experience before you get the connection.

Strong, Sturdy, Superb
Sep 18, 2006 06:45 PM 9795 Views

One look at the R52 and you realise that it is a strong and sturdy beast. This looks as strong as a african Buffalo!!!! (Dont ask me why I chose this particular species for comparision....probably because both are black :) ). The Laptop is wonderfully easy to use, as are any of the IBM products.

The Access IBM Recovery tool is a treat for a computer novice....it offers a very transparent recovery experience. The Screen is big, flat and all of 15.2 inches long....and offers a luxurious view of the proceedings. Only problem is that it comes packaged with Norton Antivirus....and I am not at all a fan of Norton.....i tolerated it for 15 days and switched over to my favourite AVG Free.

For users like me, who are bred on DELL Laptops, the function key in the Thinkpad is placed at a very inconvenient place. I end up using the FN+ALT+DEL whenever I try to lock the screen!!! Other than that small flaw, there is nothing to complain about the Thinkpad.

The DVD Burner (Yes!!!!i got the sales guy to put this in) works like a breeze. Connecting to the Internet using wireless is effortless....even a new user can do it in 2 minutes flat. All in all This is one thing that needs to be given a serious thought when buying a laptop. The specs of my baby are: INTEL CENTRINO MOBILE TECHNOLOGY 60 GB HDD, 512 MB RAM CD/DVD R/W 1024*768 SCREEN RES/ 15.2" MONITOR.
