Train To Busan review: The undead are born again

Echoes of George A Romero's Night of the Living Dead ripple through Yeon Sang-ho's first-rate zombie apocalypse film In Train to Busan, its mild-mannered, office-bound hero Seok-woo ( Gong Yoo) has to get violent and resourceful, while learning that perhaps his daughter is more important than his job and that maybe, just maybe, people are more important than profit

Seok-woo ( Gong Yoo) , a divorced fund manager and distant dad, takes his young daughter Soo-an ( Kim Su-an) to see her mother in Busan as a birthday gift.

On board the high-speed train, we encounter two squabbling, elderly sisters, a gregarious bruiser and his heavily pregnant wife, a self-serving executive, a lively gang of teenagers, and a young woman with a bite wound, who soon pounces on an attendant.

Before you know it, a plucky group of survivors – including Yoo and Su-an – are attempting to hold fast against an encroaching horde of zombies. Will they ever get to Busan? And has Busan fallen to the same catastrophic infection?

Gong’s Seok-Woo emerges as a resourceful, determined lead, growing from a disengaged workaholic ( whose company may have invested in the facility responsible for the outbreak) willing to sacrifice others to protect himself into a more recognisable hero. The characters around him are well-developed stock figures, but some neat storytelling twists mean you can’t always see who will go first, or how, or why — and the really hiss-able villain, as is traditional in these situations, is a ratfink traitor in their midst.

Crucially, Yeon has come up with a take on zombies that is rooted deep in the genre but still feels innovative. Like Romero’s undead, these are an inescapable evil spreading across the world to offer a sly commentary on our modern society. Like the ‘infected’ in Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later, they’re fast and strong. And like the swarming hordes of World War Z, there’s something insect-like about their ravenous pursuit of these few uninfected hold-outs; they force their way through walls and doors with the sheer weight of their numbers and fall from great heights to continue their pursuit on broken limbs. But Yeon has his own twists, too. These figures are contorted and unnatural, closer to something from The Exorcist or Ring than zombies we’ve seen before, and they’re driven by sight rather than smell or hearing — a fact the survivors exploit to great effect.

Apart from a boring start, the movie hasgot some amazing thrills and will keep you entrrtained throughout. The story is about the relationship between a busy man and his daughter and somewhere revolves around the zombies. 90% of the movie is shooted in the train which initially was going somehere else but reached Busan!

Overall its a great entertainer and a must watch film with some great twist and turns. Trust me expect for the unexpected.

It is incredible how quickly Train to Busan gets you to care about its characters. They are all archetypes, and none of their names register. This is how I remember some of them: gusty, funny guy with pregnant wife ( Ma Dong-seok) , selfish father ( Gong Yoo) , little girl with parental issues ( Kim Su-an) , homeless man ( Choi Gwi-hwa) , flirtatious students ( Choi Woo-shik and Ahn So-hee) … But these general labels are what we’d have likely slapped on them if we’d travelled along in that cursed train to Busan even as South Korea slowly turns into zombieland for no apparent reason.

Train to Busan brings absolutely nothing new to the zombie genre, but it shows that lack of novelty needn’t be a handicap at all. It has everything you’d expect in a zombie film: The close calls, the mass slaughters, the long chases. A lot of it is quite beautifully shot. A crucial shot of a self-sacrificing man is shown as a shadow… a dark figure of a man who, during the course of the film, manages to turn to light. The film is full of such delicious ironies. A man who isn’t allowed entry into a train compartment by another finds the tables turned later in the film. A homeless man, viewed throughout with suspicion by the other characters, is the reason two upper-class women survive. A woman who’s expecting a child is forced by circumstances to accept another. A girl whose singing falters on account of her father’s lack of support, sings her best when he’s gone forever. Such symmetry in writing doesn’t happen accidentally.

Good Movie

Story: Seok Woo ( Yoo Gong) tries to balance his demanding job while dealing with his young daughter Soo-an ( Soo-an Kim) , who prefers to be with Woo’s estranged wife instead. Giving in to a request for her birthday, the duo head out to meet Soo-an’s mother in Busan. But a stray passenger manages to stumble aboard, spreading chaos and mayhem as a rabid virus turns the helpless commuters into zombies, leaving Seok Woo and Soo-an to fend for their lives.

Review: Modern zombie movies are usually associated with mindless gore, bucket loads of CGI and tedious scare tactics that can be spotted a mile away by the average horror fan. Rarely would one expect to find themselves immersed in a gripping tale of human relationships and a character study on how people react to dire circumstances.

The setup appears to be standard fare with the protagonist Seok Woo, trying to connect with his young daughter Soo-an, as his career doesn’t permit much time for family. When the two of them set off for Busan, it's only a matter of time before the seemingly innocuous train ride turns into a matter of life and death. However, South Korean writer and director Sang-ho Yeon uses the claustrophobic setting of the train to his advantage, turning it into a riveting nightmare. Even when the story briefly steps off the tracks, the action continues to be gripping. This is largely due to the narrative extending beyond the two main characters, as the secondary characters tell their own individual stories, even taking precedence at crucial moments. This compels the audience to be emotionally invested in them, and their fates have a significant impact on the overall plot.

Resorting to mostly practical effects helps maintain a degree of realism that serves the movie well and yet, the inevitable violence isn't nauseating. Combined with cinematography that Hollywood should learn from ( no shaky camerawork here) , the plot deftly moves past some genre tropes by posing moral questions on what distinguishes humans from animals. Director Sang-ho Yeon coaxes restrained performances from the talented cast which allows the eventual melodramatic climax to hit home without being too hard to digest. This combination makes ‘Train to Busan ’a thoroughly enjoyable, and occasionally thought-provoking experience, making it a must-watch for horror fans!
