A Must Watch

Yet another terrific thriller from David Fincher which engages us from the beginning to the end.

Fincher's effort to coverup the plot holes is all the more noticeable for being strained. The Game has a sunny, redemptive side that ill suits fincher and ill serves audiences that share his former affinity to loose ends hauntingly left untied.

Michael Douglas's performance was remarkable.

A must watch one, .

Exhilarating Movie!!!

Michael Douglas has done an outstanding job to play the lead role. He has the right look and temperament to play that character. I was amazed at the way he displayed all those emotions – fear, anger, the look of revenge, and every other emotion to show his transition from being a millionaire to a man roaming on the street. In the two hour long film, he is present on screen for over 100 minutes, and it is predominantly his performance that is the driving force. But the film does not have the usual trademarks of Fincher – no dim lit surroundings, no exploration of dark sides of people. rather it is a film about what all life can throw at you, either by fate or by someone else’s careful planning. This is about a man who is driven to the end of his wits, and how he deals with it.

So while the climax is a questionable topic, the rest of the film is exhilarating. Fincher and Douglas strike all the right notes to bring you a mesmerising mystery thriller, with no shortage of entertainment.

Oxford should coin a new word to abridge the unexplainable feeling you experience after watching a David Fincherfilm. It happened to me with Fight Club and Gone Girl and it happened again with

The Game(1997). I was digging into Michael Douglas’s career after watching Ant-Man and this particular movie caught my attention(because it says “directed by David Fincher”). One cannot easily rate a David Fincher's film, the style and substance being so complex. Though you struggle to put your reactions into words, I’m pretty sure you love that disturbance and would soon be fancying more of it.

The Game is a story of a wealthy investment banker who broke up his marriage and loves only solitude besides his job. He runs into a certain gaming corporation which takes the peace out of his life using some insane and bizarre strategies. You get carried away to the extent that you have no clue whether the film is about robbery or reality games or whatever the hell that is till the moment it all ends!

You do get frustrated quite a few times while watching The Game. Some opine that is because the film drags a bit too long. Others say director supremely succeeded in putting the audience in his hero’s shoes. I would choose the second way of expressing it. When Michael Douglas screams helplessly, you feel like screaming too! When he is terminally frustrated about the childish suffering ‘they’ are causing to him, you ponder why this thing never ends!

The director certainly leaves us with questions at the end, though it is an individual choice whether or not to worry about answers.  The Game is unorthodox, yet quite fun!

Movie The Game

The Plot(movies.yahoo.com)

A bored billionare philanthropist Nicholas Van Orton(MICHAEL DOUGLAS)

is given a birthday gift by his brother Conrad(SEAN PENN) to make his

life more interesting - a high-stakes game in which the rules remain a

mystery. After receiving numerous clues and life-saving keys, he

realizes that someone has made him the target of a detailed scam,

completely draining his bank account in the process.

When he begins to believe that "the game" ends when he is dead, he must do what he can to save his own life.

My Review

A mesmerising movie from start to end...and with the same stroke of my

MS ink, let me tell you how disappointed I'm with Bollywood writers.

But more of that later.

Not days after watching another super

unpredictable flick Deepwater, I got the chance to see another smacking

unpredictable thriller; The Game. What twists, after twists, after

twists in the movie! wonderful.

Some of the scenes simply leave a lump in your throat. In the beginning, we have billionaire Michael Douglas

with his $1000 shoes sitting in a fanciful restaurant and asking

disinterestedly to his brother & not-so-accomplished Sean Penn "Do

you need anything?". Many scenes later, in the brink of collapse having

been abused non-stop by the people behind the 'game', we have Michael

standing dirty & penniless near the border of Mexico pleading to

passers-by, "I've just $18.30 cents with me. Take me to San Franciso

please". Absolutely moving.

From start to end, you will keep

wondering, "Is Michael Douglas really in a game? Or is he being duped

ruthlessly? Or has an innocent game gone tragically bad?"

And

again, as usual is the case with many stunning thrillers, we have

everyone in the cast doing near-perfect justice to their roles.

Michael Douglas(Traffic,

Disclosure, The American President) is memorable. And so humble in his

performance like our great veteran Amitabh Bachchan. Some people also

say that this role has been his best career performance to date.

Sean Penn(The

Interpreter, Dead Man Walking), although convincing, got a shorter role

in the movie. But I'm sure he didn't mind because he's been part of a

wonderful production.

Now coming to the cons...

I'dont have anything negative to see about the movie. Instead, my

criticism is against the 'creative script writers' of bollywood.

BLUFF MASTER - MADE IN 2005. Ring a bell?

The bell will definitely ring(like it did for me) for many who is gonna

watch The Game after having viewed Bluff master. I praised Bluff Master

to the skies a year ago for its plot of substance. Now I bite my tongue

for the hasty compliment. Similiarities in both movies cannot be

brushed off as coincidence. I can only shake my head in pity.

Atleast director Ram Gopal Verma has the guts to say in public that

he's honored to remake movies or copy ideas from Steven Speilberg.

Anway, I don't want this movie review to be a bashing review on our bollwyood badshahs! forget it.

So, friends watch The Game and you'll be tempted to play one yourself....

Trivia (imdb.com)

~ The real Game, which inspired the movie, was itself inspired by Midnight Madness (1980), which starred, Michael J. Fox.

~ Jodie Foster was in talks for the part eventually played by 'Sean

Penn' . At that time in pre-production the character was intended to be

Nicholas Van Orton's daughter or sister.

Director - David Fincher

Year - 1997

Starring - Michael Douglas, Sean Penn, Deborah Kara Unger

Verdict - One of the best Michael Douglas movies ever...play it now :)
