Slumdog Millionaire hits the ground running, A breathless exciting story about a mumbai orphan rises from rags to riches on the strength of his lively intelligence.

The Director Dannie Boyal shows the vision and energy of city of god and still thrills in all aspects.

A.R.Rahman's Oscar winning music and Rasool Pookutti's sound mixing makes the movie worth a watch.

A must watch movie for all film lovers.

Numerous narratives and films have explored the issues related to children and human rights, especially in asian cointries.Slumdog Millionare is essentially about the harsh realities of children living in the slums in india and the things they are forced to.It depicts the story of jamal malik( Dev Patel), a teenage boy from dharavi slums of mumbai, who appears on the indian version of who wants to be a millionare? this illiterate boy goes on to win the show, thereby arousing the suspicions of the game show host( Anil Kapoor) and the law enforcement officials.Desperate proving his innocence, Jamal tells the story of his life in the slum where he and his brother salim, grew up, of their adventures together on the road, of vicious encounters with local gangsters, of their life in the slums of Dharavi, and of Latika( Frieda), the girl whom he love and lost. The story told in flashback sequece

reveals how every encounter in Jamal's life priovided the key to the answer asked during game show. But the real reason of Jamal playing this game was to find his lost love and not money.Movie is propelled with scintillating music of A.R.Rahman, the film has good songs and the director has done a good job.The film is a true eye opener, it potrays the spirit of every slum child of finding hope and a realease from the bondage of povetty

Slumdog is heart pounding cinema..!
Jun 05, 2012 02:13 PM 6294 Views

Every successful fairy tale, in some way or the other, is based on elementary mythological ideas. For instance “Star wars”; the story of a young charming prince, going in quest for his abducted princess, (into exotic infinity of outer space) is the kind of bedtime story that we have grown up to. Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung (1875-1961) named these elementary ideas "archetypes," which he believed to be the building blocks not only of the unconscious mind, but of a collective unconscious.

Adapted from Vikas Swarup’s novel Q&A, Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire is nothing but another myth inspired fairytale which tells the story of 3 slumkids and their coming of age, uplifting journey through the streets of Mumbai. For starters Slumdog is a Hollywood film made with a bollywood heart, exclusively appealing to the Indian viewers. There is that popular game show, the English version of Amitabh Bhachans “Kon Banega Crorepathi” and there is also Johari like romance story (at the heart of it) which we are all familiar with, but if you’re willing to overlook its blatant, implausible plot values it has an entertainment quotient which is comparable to few other Hollywood movies (Of similar genre). To be more specific the pleasure of watching this film comes merely by seeing it.

The films protagonist of course is “Jamal” a struggling slum kid who by chance (a wild one) got birth on the infamous talk show “Who wants to be a millionaire”. Danny Boyle combines the suspense of a game show with the transcendent vision of Brazilian film "City of God".

The film marries City of God’s horrifying, Dickensian space, where children are orphaned, mutilated and manipulated with a goofy entertainment quotient comparable to Johar’s romantic musicals resulting in 2 hours of sheer popcorn entertainment. Infact that’s what I like about this film, the way it keeps a delicate balance between grimness and fun filled adventure. It’s a thin line but Danny Boyle handles it with such mastery that you can’t help falling in love with it.

In fact, Boyle’s film is not only a magical entertainer but also a reminder – it’s about storytelling and not the story. The silliness of the plot wobbles at times but it’s his narrative and the immense likeability of its actors (and characters) leaves you dazzled from start to finish. Beginning as a mesmerizing boyhood dream and ending as a heartwarming love story, its corporate Hollywood working at its very, very best.

There are moments in Slumdog, so beautiful, so mesmerizing that you even actually forget the fact that you’re watching a movie (If you’ve seen this you might understand what I’m referring to). Yes, I’m referring to that Iconic railway station scene (post interval) where Jamal, standing on the railway flyovers, yells at her love. “Latika, Latika”he shouts.. The girl hears him, her curly hair wobbles in the air, making moves to the tunes of a speeding train as she looks back at him with a smiling face. For a moment I thought I was Jamal (not Dev patel) and Latika…………. Well, she is Latika. (Hi, hi) The story of slumdog may seem predictable even for a 5 year old but hey then what are movies for..?I’m going with 4 out 5 and two big thumbs for Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire. Look beyond its silly premise then you what you have is a heart pounding love story. Watch it and come back beaming.. J

Slumdog millionaire - a different view
Jul 18, 2010 12:08 AM 8168 Views

The book is definitely better than the movie.. we are saved from the din , noise and cacophony created by Resul Pookutty..

..Ideally you should choose to be a domestic help to people of varying professions.. that way , you come to know from an astronomic about Pluto being the smallest planet..from a diplomat who is spying ..what is persona non grata..from an actress about , which Film fare award , went to whom..

...The Chapter ...A Soldiers Tale , is very interesting.. the quiz winner comes to know Param Vir Chakra is the highest Military decoration for valour during War..from an account of battle of Chamb Jaurian , narrated by a Deserter Lance Naik from Sikh Regiment..

...Colonels who can describe battles in such details of tactics and armament would be difficult to find .. One wonders whether the author of the book is an I.F.S Officer or a retired Fauji from the Sikh battalion..But then, no officer would ever mention , his men ran away in battle..( days of the Martial Race , are fast disappearing..)

... The way the Producers decide not to give the Billion rupee prize to the waiter winner.. ( asks the Police to get a tortured confession from him , that he cheated ) reminds me of the swindle, the "Readers Don't Digest" people , perpetrate in their yearly mega jackpots..

Happy Reading...

Slumdog Millionaire: Not worth a watch!
Jan 02, 2010 09:39 PM 8105 Views

The fact that this movie has evoked my need to review movies again on my blog, is the only credit I would offer this 130-minute piece of nonsense!

As if the name 'Slumdog' isn't offensive enough to those living in the slums, the fact that the London-based director Danny Boyle has picked a London-based Indian boy, with an unmistakable English accent, to play the part of a slum boy, offends the intelligence of this film's viewers!

In which part of India would you see a boy living on the street speak so fluently in crisp English accent? I am really interested to know!

This film seems confused in its choice of language. The slum kids grow up speaking shuddh Mumbai Hindi complete with Hindi bhajans and abuses and suddenly when they are teenagers they start rambling in 'dude-English', the kind you see only in Hollywood.

Maybe Danny didn't know what he was aiming for: The Bollywood Filmfare Awards or The Hollywood Oscars. With a bit of tango, he got lucky with the latter.

Critics of this film are right in proclaiming that this film is nothing about India. It is in fact a mockery of our struggle to match up to the superpower countries.

This film boasts of India in its cruelty to slum kids, which wouldn't take place in a country like America; where a boy in the slum has no idea who Mahatma Gandhi is, but is aware of Benjamin Franklin's impression on the dollar; where there seems to be no hope for slum children but to end up as prostitutes or gangsters or in this case, win a jackpot; where the host of a reality show wouldn't give a damn about insulting a show contestant from a humble background on national television (something neither Shahrukh nor Amitabh have done and that is why it surprises me!)

This film is perhaps a way for the first world countries to have fun at the expense of our country. Thanks to the extremely well-meaning, patriotic and loyal Indian cast and crew of this film who have sold their country to the world for a few extra dollars.

This movie may win a couple of Oscars, but it can never win a place in the heart of a true Indian!

Slumdog Success Story in the Making of....
Sep 07, 2009 02:26 PM 7400 Views

I totally disagree with the review I just read. It does not matter who wrote it. I'm sure someone will disagree with me on this point.

My daughter brought this movie home (borrowed from a friend) telling me she thought I would enjoy it and she was right.

I found it to be refreshing after all the Hollywood projects that everyone buys into. Most of the movies lack depth in the story lines or seem to be remakes of movies that were best left as they were. The cartoons being pumped out into mainstream society are fantastic in the graphics arts department.

This Slumdog Millionaire picture is a fascinating piece; showing the underside of India at a grassroots level of the poverty (have nots) and the not so poor (the wish they had respect - but still have nots) who profit from the use of their fellow human beings; how children can be used for monetary gain is a commonality in every country that I have ever read about.

In Canada there are perveyors of children called Pedophiles; the man on the street that wants to have a physical relationship with a child buys it from a woman who looks like a child or is in actual fact a child that has been put to work because their parent is a drug addict or some other level of low life that is rampant in society all over the world.

Slumdog is one of the best movies I have encountered in years. Well written dialogue portrays the characters as human beings that a person like me could connect with; I felt the pain, the frustration, the horror of seeing one's mother's head bashed in by thugs because of the difference in beliefs, children scurrying to get out of the way.

Becoming lost in a world of abuses heaped upon one another like layers of garbage...the bonds children make when faced with acute loss is very real...it is a dog eat dog world...watch your back...if your story sounds like a lie it must be so...who's feeding you all the answers...even blood is not guaranteed a pass...watch your back...

I cried my heart out for the lost children, the pain I felt was real for me. The anger that welled up in my mind was difficult at best to assuage, for my mind to have captured those moments is difficult for me to excavate from my long hallway of doors that has set up residence in my mansion of memories.

I have watched this piece completey from start to finish three times with the same anguish catching me offguard and spriralling me into the world those poor children were forced to endure.

The insanity of the game show caught me by surprise and again I have to say the realisim was astounding, fascinating, a can't take my eyes away from the screen. I look forward to movies of this calibur in the near future. CONGRATULATIONS!!! to all the participants involved in the making of this excellent movie.

Bottomless optimism is the bottomline
May 01, 2009 10:10 PM 3904 Views

This blog is not going to talk about how it depicts a low esteem of India or about how this movie showed to the rest of the world which already thinks that every picture of a slum should be of India, or about the guilt trips made by all the Indians in getting reminded of the SLUM Children while we are basking in all the luxuries of life or if it really deserved those Oscars or not.

It is just going to talk about the brilliance with which this movie is made, its fiction aspects, its theme and its fairy tale ending.

The movie is based on Bottomless optimism, how fate and just hoping against hope to have your dreams come true; still making all the attempts and taking all the risks to get there . The story is about how a young lad who loses the connection to his love to fate, lives his life just to realise his dream without forgetting her even for a moment. He gets on TV on a quiz show which could earn him a million bucks. He being no genius, fears nothing, though being mocked of his social status in the show, remains unpertubed and answers every question by just recalling the incidents in his life.

It is optimism all the way.

He hopes to find his lost brother's number when in a Call Center, he does.He hopes to see her someday, he does.He hopes to have her meet him at the railway station one evening, she does.He hopes she will watch the show, she does. He wishes she will be his, and fate has it for him, SHE IS.

All this not because he was lucky but because He wishes with all his heart and soul with all the optimism in the world.

The feeling of a win elates you the most only when you are not conscious of your winning. You could read that on the boy's face, for what he was playing for is not the money but for the love of his life. Road side cricket, film star worship which can make a kid jump through a latrine, temptation to cheat on a game show, fake tour guides, how much socio-economic status can matter in your lives, child hood miseries of the slums, it captures the truth of India proudly packaged with India s very own extraordinary music. It Happens only in India.

True to its theme, they emerged out winners of the Oscar, as they sing in the movie"Everyone's a winner now we're making that fame".

If it is to be, it will be

A bare attempt of utopia with an ostentatious show
May 01, 2009 08:50 PM 3638 Views

The movie starts with a cheesy question 'Who wants to be a millionaire?' and ends with its equally cheesy answer like a Shakespeare's quote and cartoonish endings. In this miserable, shitty economic slack of time, people obviously tend to dream of such Aesop's fables and sit on top of cloud 9 as of to become a millionaire just by tracing back your past life experiences. Ha! Sounds paradoxical?

Tell me honestly how many of you spend lives pinning after a gal who you knew only for a month at eight. Still worse is the director's cut to sympathize a protoganist Jamal Malik with neither conceit, apprehension nor any eccentricities, who has no real purpose in life other than to be trampled on and ignored by the society. And ha please stop comparing Magnolia and Slumdog. Magnolia was messy but damn practical when compared to Slumdog. An apt first name for a piece of hollow, pointless movie by Danny Boyle.

Fact to repent for is The Academy thinks the movie is a grandiloquent one and awards a bunch of gold plated britannium statuettes! Grow up people! I know you guys have seen far better movies like Shawshank Redemption, Forest Gump, Godfather, Taree Zameen Par, Rang de Basanthi and so many to name.

Should watch this movie!!
Apr 27, 2009 07:02 AM 3664 Views

This movie caught my attention when it took the Oscars by storm. There has been a lot of debate on whether the movie depicted India in the correct manner. I watched the movie a couple of days back only. To summarize, for the most part of the movie, it does portray a negative image of India. I don't think that anybody is debating that some things portrayed in the movie don't happen in India. As I understand, the debate is around whether a balanced image has been presented about India. However, to be fair to the movie, the ending is obviously uplifting. So although it does portray a lot of the ills in India, it also does try to highlight the positives too. There are definitely gruesome scenes, . especially the deliberate blinding of the kids for begging.the torture by the police. However there definitely are uplifting parts to the movie too like the part where the police are finally convinced that the guy is telling the truth and his going on to win the game and his love back.

The cast acted very well. The music was good. However according to me, it definitely is not Rahman's best. This is not to say that he does not deserve an Oscar. He definitely does but probably for some of his earlier Bollywood music. However. considering the fact that hardly any movies from Bollywood make it to the Oscar Foreign film category.it is better that he gets his due recognition atleast for Slumdog Millionaire.

There has also been a lot of debate on whether if the same movie was made by an Indian director, would it have gathered the accolades and awards it did recieve? I think that is still open to debate.

Overall. I think everyone should watch this movie.

Is it truly Real India
Apr 12, 2009 09:49 PM 3361 Views

It has taken me quite sometime to come up with my view on this widely famous movie, which has won enough Oscars that would collectively put to shame the previous achievers from India. This movies has all the elements to satisfy the curiosity and the perceived notion of India of beggars, snake-charmers, mendicants, sanyasies, slums, utter poverty and the list goes on. It is more of serving India with a dose of romance, glam, poverty porn and the canard‘it happens only in India.’

I could only cringe at many situations faced by Jamal and romanticised byBoyle. First take up the scene when Jamal is in the toilet and the famous actor Amitabh Bachan comes over for a shoot in the slums and Jamal jumps into the piling faeces below just to get an autograph from this great actor. Does that not show the blind fascination of Indians to the film stars, but this scene has gone beyond that. Utter commercialisation!

Next is the scene where the children are made beggars! Come on this is the 21st century and we can be sure that these scenes do not happen anymore. We were frightened in our childhood these sort of things happen. But with what regularity? This happens in movies and only in movies more often. It was so bloody horrible that I had to close my eyes when this scene was played. I would give an Oscar to Naan Kadavul if the case be.

Then the improbable journey across North India, where Jamal gets beaten up when he takes American Tourists to a place not frequented by tourist and in the process the car tyres are ripped off. The Jamal says, ‘Welcome to Real India’ or to that effect. Yes, it happens in India and to all the Indians who go out of their way to show something very unique to India. This could happen to any tourist in any part of the world(New York Brooklyn or East End London or the docks of Marseilles). This scene is about a westerner being in the wrong place in the wrong time. Come on give me a break! This happens everywhere in the world.

Then the prostitution in Bombay. This is a known fact to the entire world and how the havelies in the by lanes of Bombay Central, Kamatipura or Grant Road operate and how the influx of new entrants come. It is not just orphans who are introduced to this field, but migrants who have lost their livelihood in their villages, the people driven out of their home due to political upheavals(Nepal) or just the pressure of carrying on with life and having no means otherwise. This vertical is not the real India by any means. Then if a case study is taken on prostitution the WEST would anytime beat India, with their ingenious ways.

Then the Q&A section of the movie, which dominates and the entire story revolves. This shows media in India controlled by pseudo intellectuals, who is apathetic to someone who is just lucky by experience! But I am sure everyone is given a fair chance in any field in India, despite the reservations, the divide between the rich and the poor, can excel. The entire Q&A is just a romanisation of the Kaun Bhanega Crorepathiand a very poor imitation of that famous reality show of the late nineties. We all know the luck and the surprise element in these shows. This entire charade was a utter mockery and shows how the so called high and mighty control the political and the police apparatus. If you take on the whole this does not happen in day-to-day life in India. There is still a virtue of righteousness in every aspect of Indian life.

Then the underworld of Bombay, it is overly romanticised in many Bollywood and other WOODS in India. This is just like in the west of mafias and drug dealers.

The love factor which drives Jamal to attain his destiny is not new to India.

The music is exceptional in this movie. But in that case AR Rahman should have been awarded multiple Oscars in the past few years.

I can just conclude that this movie is made to satisfy the West’s infatuation and perception of what India is, Poverty, Slums, Crime, Exploitation, Wheeling dealings and the list goes on and on. Do you think that if that this movie made by some Indian with the same cast and storyline would have crossed the shores of Bombay? We all damn well know that it would not have. This movie was just a Bollywood fantasy made by a British director.

I met an Austrian Photographer in Bombay in 1997 and she showcased the best of Indian culture, dance, portraits, festivals, landscapes… and I just happened to ask her why not the sordid poverty, slums and backwardness? She asked me, where in Earth don't you find these depressing scenes and why do you have to portray the worst when the best is beautiful and uplifting?

Nice movie
Apr 06, 2009 06:29 PM 3287 Views

I know I know all the controversy about the movie but still the movie has done pretty well in Indian theater's also. The movie is an entertainer in whole with all the twists and strong characters. The music fits in, cinematography is new to Indian viewers and good. For an international audience the movie has a lot of ohhs and ahhas of emotion, the music is brand new...

With a little bit of slum intro in mumbai. For got sake this movie has bagged 8 oscars. Not one of the typical Danny boyle flicks... no no not if you've watched trainspotting. The last song I feel is the introduction of bollywood masala in hollywood movies and i'm not that happy with that.I read a half page advertisement on national paper telling people not to watch this movie since it supposively offends Indian's..... now that was funny and motivation for me to watch it.Has performed really well in western world showing glimpses of India as it is from an Englishman's perception.watch it . .

Slumdog Millionaire - disgusting movie
Apr 05, 2009 07:08 PM 4083 Views

Is it just my opinion that the West only cherishes filth and poverty in India? Started with Satyajit ray and continued with a host of other Indians in the West making movies or writing books. It is a given that movies depicting prostitution, caste prejudices and sexual inequalities in India will be showcased as general realities of india.

These exist in various forms and shades in the West but never are depicted as such to movie goers in India. Why can't an entertainment organization show similar realities in Western countries to audiences in India? There are bizzarre events that regularly occur in the West - rattlesnake hunt and snake cooking in Texas, squirrel eating by presidental candidates and many more!

What a disgusting movie and script. The majority of dialogue was laden with expletives and the story could notpull itself out of the gutters.

I am not surprised that the West found it fit to shower with Oscars unlike "Lagaan" - an uplifting story.

The cast was good and I did like the "Jai Ho" song - other than that save your money and skip the video rental fee.

If you would like to compare this with a western similar movie - contrast it with an Officer and Gentleman - and you ill see the difference in depiction between the two.

A movie that I will always cherish
Mar 14, 2009 10:25 PM 3327 Views

This movie reminded me of mumbai and the spirit of mumbai. Eventhough I am not from mumbai, I'm very familiar with the spirit of mumbai and Slumdog millionaire does an excellent job of showing that spirit and the hurdles mumbaikars face while climbing the ladder of success.

kudos and congratulations to the cast for their oscar sweep. I liked the acting from all the junior characters and was very impressed by Dev Patel (a british lad of Indian origin). I wish him luck. Anil Kapoor was very energetic not only in the movie but in promoting the movie.

I also liked the spirit of Simon Beaufoy, Danny Boyle and Christian Colson and their willingness to work in some challenging situations (hustle and bustle of mumbai). One cannot forget the music maestro A. R. Rahman and Resul Pookutty who have not only brought 3 oscars to India but has made every indian proud.

SLUMDOG JUST BARKED LOUD
Mar 14, 2009 11:43 AM 3533 Views

THE MOVIE IS AN AWSOME BLEND OF TOTAL BOLYWOOD MASALA AND SMASHING HOLLYWOOD CINEMATOGRAPHY.

The sotryline was perfect and was directed with subtlety. I would like to add that Danny Boyel is a perfectionist and chose the most happening subject to make movie. Cast selection was also admirable. dev patle came out to be the center of attrction after the release of the film.

Danny gave the most subtle reason for selecting dev patel that he appears to be looser. But ironically he comes out to be the ultimate winner of both as a millionare and also as the winner of maximum number of oscars. Next, what to say about the music its the best rehman had ever given. The whole world is dancing on the tunes of JAI HO!!!But one thing I would like to say that the magic of rehman could be seen (or heard) in just one song. Others like *ring ring ringa *just ordinary by the by song.
