A well made comedy. In most comic movies you would have noticed that the timing of comedy in the movies is very important. Sometimes the characters do trying to play a role naturally is comical. And sometimes, people tend to overact at comedy. In most cases the facial expressions count towards the act.
Ever heard of a deaf man and a blind man who witness a murder? You naturally expect to watch great comedy or suspense. This movie has both. The timing and the roles perfectly match the characters.
The story is as follows. A man is murdered. Two men witness it. A blind black man (Richard Pryor) who is in search of a job. He goes to meet a white (Gene Wilder) deaf news paper seller for a job as he requires an assist. Pryor also has a lot of gambling debts and when the bookie comes looking for him at the new seller’s place, he’s murdered.
Well Richard hears them, and Gene sees the killers. The police don't think they're credible witnesses, and both are accused of killing the bookie of the Blind Guy. But the killers don't want to take chances. They want to kill them. How the two men work together to save themselves and bring the killers to justice is the rest of the movie.
Though not much of a story, it’s the comical stuff of the lead pair which keeps you engrossed throughout. And if you have watched the lead pair in umpteen movies together, then you know what to expect.
Most of you would enjoy the character of Gene as the newspaper seller. I am sure all of you love comedy, and I recommend this movie very much. The acting is amazing. Especially the scene where they play two foreign doctors.
You must watch it and any further revelations would be spoiling the fun..
Trivia: Gene Wilder went to the NY League for the Hard of Hearing to study for his role, and he was assigned to his future wife, Karen Boyer. (a speech-pathologist)
