Saw II Movie Reviews

Philadelphia United States of America
Jigjaw's House of Death

After watching Saw I was very impressed with this edge of your seat horror/thriller. I immediately rented Saw II While I enjoyed this sequel I didn’t like as much as I did Saw. Acting by the cast is a little better in this sequel. Donnie Wahlberg also provides a good dramatic role as a corrupt detective and a guilt-ridden father whose relationship with his son is sour. Tobin Bell is excellent in his lead role as the Jigsaw killer. Shawnee Smith also returns to this sequel as a kidnapped victim who once again survives the Jigsaw killer, leaving the viewer with a surprising climax.

In this intriguing horror/thriller the Jigsaw killer, a dying cancer victim continues his games of kidnapping, torment, and reminding his victims why they must appreciate living. The Jigsaw killer is caught, and he masterminds another deadly scheme when he manipulates the fears of a distressed detective, and father. Saw 2 is written and directed by Darren Lynn Bousman , Leigh Whannel the running time for this movie is 1:33. Saw 2 was released in October of 2005

The movie opens when a kidnapped man finds himself in an empty room watching a TV monitor of the Jigsaw killer giving him clues of escape, he’s hooded with a death mask. Jigsaw identifies him as an informant telling him the wrong deeds he’s done to others. He’s told his head will be crushed if doesn't find the key to unlock the device in a minute. He's shown how the key was embedded in his eye. The victim must cut his eye open to get the key. Ultimately his head is crushed and he dies.

Later we see the capture of the Jigsaw killer when a swat team of Police raid his home. Detective Matthews portrayed by Donnie Walhberg, a corrupt detective known for framing his assailants for convictions is told by Jigsaw that his son is kidnapped and located in an abandon house with the victims he's framed. Jigsaw tell Matthews that the kidnapped victims are breathing a poisonous nerve gas that will kill them in two hours unless they find a special antidote and a key hidden in the house. The house will unlock in three hours.

Matthews now in a race against time wants to rescue his son. The victims are fighting for their lives and using every orchestrated death trap by Jigsaw. We see the death of Jigsaw's second victim, a man among the kidnapped victims who finds the key to a door in the house; when he unlocks the door he's shot in the head. Another man helps the others find the antipode by crawling through a crematory furnace, only to find the antidotes and face death when the furnace ignites, burning him to death. Another victim finds the antidote in a glass box when she reaches for the antidote her hands, and arms are cut excessively she dies when she’s locked in the same room. Another victim gets caught in the Jigsaw game of death when he has to find the combination numbers to a safe on the necks of each victim. He must unlock the safe to find the antidote and key to the house; he kills two victims in his quest for freedom.

Lastly, another victim is forced to find a key in a pit of syringes. The rules of the Jigsaw killer doesn't change the Jigsaw's victims must kill each other to survive. Saw 2 becomes intense when Jigsaw convinces Detective Matthews to leave a crime scene.

Final Thoughts

As I mentioned earlier, Saw 2 is a very good sequel. While the acting by this cast is a bit better the high levels of energy, and suspense sort of deems itself. This sequel loses its gripping touch. The action scenes and sequences simply repeat it self thus losing its suspenseful edge of your seat flavor of excitement. Saw 2 amounts to a predictable movie that totally lends it self to the original script in Saw. Saw 2 also deviates itself from any room for new and creative elements thus preventing an eloquently executed script and successful sequel. In Saw 2 we see the same cinematography of formatted reflections of the Jigsaw killer's origins, his work, mission and the work of his predecessor in the movie's climax as seen in Saw. Nothing changes in this sequel except the capture of Jigsaw at the preamble of the movie. The cinematography is done fairly well, but not as well executed as its first installment Saw.

Overall this movie gets four stars its not a total waste.

::The Game of Life & Death - II::

Movie: Saw2

Leading Cast: Donnie Wahlberg, Shawnee Smith, Tobin Bell

Director: Darren Lynn Bousman

Saw II was the much anticipated sequel to last year's sleeper hit, Saw that I discussed in my previous review. The film opens with one of Jigsaw’s victim, in this case a police informant, in the same sort of quandary as the victims in the original ''Saw''. Saw I had some really good spins and an inventive concept, but SAW II is leagues above it. Saw II runs with the same game based theme as the first, with clues for both the characters and the audience about what might happen next, but it takes the game to a completely different level.

This time around, Jigsaw has assembled a gang of social misfits and criminals in a decrepit old house that is leaking poisonous gas and is littered with deadly booby-traps and of course, video cameras so he can see everything that is happening to his victims. As in Saw, the hostages are left a series of tapes that give them clues as to how they are supposed to figure out how to get out of the house or get the antidote for the poison. Unfortunately, for this to happen, and as Jigsaw so proudly points out, ''There will be more blood'', which infact is the tagline of the movie.

On the other side we have, Donnie Wahlberg as Police Detective Eric Mathews, an officer with serious issues. He’s suffering from burn-out at his job, his personal life’s a mess, and he just had to bail his teenage son out of jail. To top it off,Jigsaw left a message taunting him at the site of his latest murder. Here starts the searc for Jigsaw. Finally they are able to capture Jigsaw, but than Jigsaw had some other plans in his mind. He kidnaps son of Mathhews and puts him in a room along with 7 other people with a video feed set up for the police to watch as mentioned above in first paragraph. The people here have a common relation that is one of the mysteries. Now Matthews has to play a game with Jigsaw to get his son free. What follows next is a series of bloodshed, unique twisted plots and one helluva climax. Some people would not get the ending in 1st view as it runs very fast, I had to watch the ending a second time to get the real essence. Also there are numerous forums online discussing about the movie where you will find out some very intricate details that you might have missed out. Saying more here too would ruin the experience of watching the movie.

SAW II too was made in just 25 days flat and had a really great opening in the US.S AW II is gruesome, it keeps you guessing, it has some interesting twists and turns and it has a relly inventive story. The acting here is OK sorts and does not matter in movies with such a unique storyline. And the story just does not end here...it is about to be continued as SAW III to be released in November next year. Just waiting for it.
