The real hero is always a hero by mistake; he dreams of being an honest coward like everybody else.

There are times, well, actually there are so many times when I act irrationally. Having watched Wall-E, I was extremely wary of watching any other animation, so despite having had this DVD with me for over two weeks, I was hesitant to watch it. What a dumbass I was!!! (no snickers now :-p, and I really identify with the roly-poly cuddly Panda, had the movie been released before I joined MS, my alias would have been Po). Comparing the two is an exercise in futility, for both serve their own purpose...
Far from being a damp squib, the movie turned out to be a sincere, fun lesson in duty and dreams, wisdom and willpower, all drenched in "awesomeness". Right from the beginning, we are in the company of Po (voice of Jack Black), a generously proportioned black and white bundle of naivete and wide eyed wonder, who lives with his father Mr. Ping(voice of James Hong), a goose known for his noodles. Po is a martial arts fanatic, a Kung-Fu fan who knows all the lore and skills of "The Furious Five" fighters who live in the Shaolin temple on the mountain. Po would like to spend his days with nothing better to do than dream of being the next best warrior, while his father reminds him "we are noodle folk; broth runs in our veins", all the time hoping that Po will, one day, take over the family business.
However, when it is announced that Kung Fu master Oogway (an infinitely wise turtle, with a long, liquid neck, Randall Duk Kin) will be choosing the legendary Dragon warrior, Po is beside himself with excitement. But cute, roly poly pandas are not built to climb the the thousand stairs to the temple, and by the time he gets there, the doors are barred. Po, however, catapults himself into the metaphorical hot seat, where he kicks, grunts and groans towards his destiny, that of being the Chosen One, who has to fight the snow leopard Tai Lung(Ian McShane). He must overcome his physical bulk and general geekiness to prove himself to martial arts master Shifu (a gremlin like rodent voiced, wittily, in a perpetual mutter, by Dustin Hoffman) and his students: Tigress (Angelina Jolie), Viper (Lucy Liu), Monkey (Jackie Chan), Crane (David Cross) and Mantis (Seth Rogen).
The screenplay is a tad predictable, however, where it works is in its underlying sweetness. Its a gag bag full of jokes, sage lectures, helpful lessons and kicky fights. Directors John Stevenson and Mark Osborne exploit the various training and battle sequences—one or two too many, probably—for all they're worth. "Kung Fu Panda" references everything from Bruce Lee to Stephen Chow to Jackie Chan. I particularly loved Po and Shifu's battle for control of a dumpling, waged with chopsticks, and the ultimate result. The characters are drawn beautifully. See the adorabale turtle, and the cute cute cute Viper... yes, I know what I am talking about... You remember the Snake in the snake game in Nokia? Imagine that snake with a high high high cuteness quotient, and you will know what I mean :)
Kung Fu Panda speaks out to me, rather any viewer who has dreamt an impossible dream, who has struggled against the shackles which bind him to his/her family's expectations. It touches your heart with the tale of an appealing, wide-eyed Po, who feels like an outsider amidst those whom it admires. We have all felt the pain of being a misfit sometimes, and when you see Po trying to fit in with with the Furious Five, who look down at him in disdain, its gonna be a hard hard heart which does not melt!!! It fortifies you when Po wins the grudging respect of his Master, who ultimately learns to trust again. It gladdens your heart when Po overcomes his own misgivings against himslef, and when he starts believing in himself. The best part was, I found myself nodding in acqueisance when Po said "I eat when I am upset!!" Last but not the least, there's a sweet message which tells you to be yourself, and have faith in your Master... See the movie, you will know what I mean.
P.S This review is for Rohit... whom I miss terribly, and who got me the DVDs... Thanks buddy.... miss you loads and loads and loads!!!
