Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix Reviews

Superb book is turned into a disappointing movie
Sep 12, 2017 04:12 AM 958 Views (via Android App)

The Harry Potter series is very well-written, almost genius on the part of J.K Rowling. This movie served the fifth book no credit, and almost ruined it completely. It was nearly all action throughout the whole movie and was very confusing for viewers who had not previously read the book.I'm very disappointed that David Yates is directing the last three movies, as well as , The Giver which is one of my favorite books. I'm hoping he'll improve in some way, which is doubtful, but what can you do.

Best movie in Harry potter series

Harry potter and the order of Phoenix is the best movie in the series of Harry potter. It is a thrilling one. The main attractions of the film which I like is the fight between voldemort and Professor Dumbledore. This is one of the best scenes and pretty rare too.

In this film potter try to make a team to stand up against dark force while Dumbledore was suspended. The climax fights are epic.I personally recommend everyone to watch this film.

One of my favourite part

A little bit of fantasy violence, a couple of scary scenes, and brief mild language.

This is One of the best enjoyable and really good. the way the characters are defined and story line plot are spectacular u will be on the edge of your seat the whole time. definatley not a boring movie. might be a little to scary though for kids 11 and under but other then that, totally appropriate.

This is the fifth consecutive part of the Harry potter series. This part is full of adventures and magic. In this part everyone teases Harry as a lier as he said voldemort is back and no 1 believed in him. very few believed him.

In place of dumbledore another lady was appointed as the headmaster of Hogwats by the ministry. She kept so many rules and punished students violently. She stopped the practical lectures of teaching magic.

Harry, Ron and Hermoine decided to make their own group and harry will teach them magic tricks.

The new headmaster tries to find out where they practises and finds out in the end. There is a fight between dumbledore and Voldemort in the end. Sirius is kiied by bellatrix. The ministry had seen Voldemort and it anounces that he is back.

This movie is really worth watching.

Harry potter and the order of the phoenix !!!
Aug 05, 2012 08:29 PM 1355 Views

As per the rules and regulations of the Ministry of Magic, students of any wizard school were not allowed to perform magic against anyone outside the school campus. Cormelius, the Chief of the Ministry of Magic sent Professor Umbridge to the school of Hogwarts to teach the subject of ‘Defense against Dark Arts.’ In the meanwhile, Voldemort was back. The people of a secret group knew about it and were discussing about the reasons for the return of Lord Voldemort. Harry visited the headquarters of the Order of the Phoenix. Sirius left his house at a very young age. Sirius gifted his house to Albus Dumbledore to make it the headquarters of the Order of the Phoenix.

The legal proceedings were on. Professor Dumbledore requested the Judge to consider the young age of the accused boy. After taking a poll, The Judge found that majority of the people sitting inside the court was in favor of setting Mr.Potter free of all charges against him. Luna was as sane as Harry as both of them were able to see the Thestrals. Professor Umbridge changed the entire style of education in the Hogwarts school of Wizardry. She prohibited any magical spells inside the school campus. Hence, in that process, all the students were not learning any magical skills to defend themselves from the Dark Arts. Sirius gave the secret information that Lord Voldemort is trying to create his own force.

All the Gryffindor students decided to learn about wizardry in a secret place to prepare themselves to form Dumbledore’s army. Harry became their teacher. They all learned the magical skills by uttering; Expelliarmus, Stupefy, Reducto, Diminendo, Mistletoe, etc. Filch was busy in putting new notice boards on the wall. Professor Umbridge insulted Professor Trelawney and sacked her. Professor McGonagall came to the rescue. Professor Dumbledore did not allow Professor Umbridge to banish Professor Trelawney. After the death of Cedric’s death, Cho was very depressed. Mr. Potter consoled her with a lovely deep kiss. Potter saved Mr. Weasley. Mr. Weasley and his family members gave a good cheer to Harry at the Christmas party.

Professor Umbridge, Malfoy, Filch and other Slytherin students came to know about the secret training sessions. Professor Dumbledore took all the allegations and charges on his shoulder to safeguard Harry. Cormelius wanted to put Albus behind the bars of Azkaban prison, but, Professor Dumbledore always had his own style. The Ministry of Magic decided to bring a new education reform for all the schools of wizardry. Hagrid, who was on a temporary leave, feared of getting sacked as Professor Umbridge became the Headmistress of the School of Hogwarts. Hagrid introduced his brother, Grawpy to Harry and Hermione. Potter was still getting criticized for killing a Basilisk with the sword of Albus Dumbledore.

Some dangerous prisoners fled from the prison of Azkaban. Centaurs panicked a lot. Hagrid warned Harry that a storm was coming. Fred and George played some tricks. All the students were giving the exam. Professor Umbridge opened the door and then it was the festival of lights and fire-works as if a Diwali festival was going on. Professor Snape knew that there was a connection between the minds of Harry Potter and that of the Dark Lord. Snape tried to find out about the Dark Lord’s thoughts through Harry’s minds by uttering legilimens. Snape failed to succeed in it. Harry’s friends also decided to go to London to visit the Department of Mysteries. Lord Voldemort wanted to attain prophecy.

Harry and his friends applied some magical skills by uttering; Expecto Patronum, Alohomore, Stupefy, Bombarda Maxima and Reducto to get out of that Department of Mysteries. Tom came back again to suck out the energy of Harry. The lady prisoner of Azkaban killed Sirius by uttering the magic word, Avada Kedavra. Harry ran after her to take the revenge. Professor Dumbledore came in to the rescue act. The minister of Ministry of Magic resigned. Jane Umbridge got sacked from the school of Hogwarts. Professor Dumbledore became the Principal of that school again. As per the law of prophecy, either Harry Potter or Lord Voldemort will survive. Was that the only message in “HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX?”.

A great summer flick
Sep 25, 2008 06:21 PM 1639 Views

I had the luck to view the preview show three days before it actually got released for this cool movie. A great treat for harry potter fans. The director has brilliantly tried to stitch in all pieces of the plot of the huge fifth book of harry potter and is wonderfully successful to get it done in this 2 hour movie.

If you have watched recently any of the earlier parts, you get to realize how the actors are growing older and may become a spoiler in the next coming parts. But also you cannot stop noticing the acting skills of these actors have matured too.

This part has been a bit different from the earlier parts- very less broom rides, more wand fights. The movie is filled with quite a few funny moments that brings cheer across the whole audience and a couple times applause. It doesn’t make a difference if you have read the book, this movie will still bring you to the corner of your seats.

Timed well with the release of the next book, this movie is on its way to become the best blockbuster of the summer. Don’t buy popcorn for this movie, you would not need it, as you will be so engrossed in the movie. This is a "must watch" movie for every one who has eyes.If you found this review interesting please also read my other reviews at

Not that great afterall !!!!
Nov 20, 2007 09:40 PM 1901 Views

I was very eager to watch this movie. It may be because I know what it contains, being an avid reader of the books. I booked the tickets in advance and watched it and this is what I felt.

I thought the beginning was good because it is different from the previous movies. It is very similar to the book. And from then the pace builds up as we get absorbed in the twisty and a more darker plot. But don't think it's all, there is enough humour and romance to keep you entertained throughout the movie.

It's actually the screenplay which deserves accolaids more than anything. At many points I wondered how they'd be taking the next scene, but I was completely satisfied by the way they made it. David Yates was successful in cut shorting the book so much that the longest book is also the shortest movie, that too with adequate details. They only carried which they thought was neccessary to continue the story(kreacher being a last minute addition).

Credit goes to David for including many minute details without actually telling what they are. For example, the umberella stand in Blacks house on which Tonks trips over. Of course only a person who has read the books can understand that.

Here finally is the cast, which I should say is more than perfect. Imelda Staunton as Umbridge is just the perfect fit as is Evanna Lynch as Luna Lovegood. But I wished Bellatrix's character was longer. She plays an important role in the book. Ah.somethings are different from the book but they are all well justified( GoF lacks that). Daniel portrays Harry with perfection as an angry teenager. Rupert, Emma, Bonnie, Micheal Gambon, Maggie Smith are all excellent in their roles. The emotional scene where Trelawney is sacked really moved me. It is one of the best scenes in the whole harry potter series.

The climax fight in the ministry just rocks. The special effects are mindblowing, the best ever. But the closing of the movie should have been better. There is no proper justification to the prophecy and the interaction between Harry and Dumbledore is too short. For a person who hasn't read the books, it'll all be a blur.

Harry Potter and the Order of Phoenix, the fifth adaption in the series in the best movie till now. It is a truthful movie which delivers more or less exactly what it promises.

HP's all about marketing
Aug 17, 2007 10:53 PM 1784 Views

I would say that this is the best film adaptation of JK Rowling's novels yet. However, I still feel that they could have done a lot better. As always, the plot is modified, so as to fit in to the time limit. If it were any longer, it would be boring. For die-hard Harry Potter fans, its an amazibng movie. But for everyone else, its a bit so-so. The effects are good, much better than the first 2. The plot also seems to stick together. Not like the last 2, in which they rushed through everything.

Not much on the acting side of things. Everyone's grown up, so as per western philosophy, there must be kissing scenes(which there are).

I feel the movie could have been made more fast-paced. Director has tried to include as much as he could of the original story, but unfortunately, the'best' action scenes are shot in pitch dark.

So, you can't really make out any of the drama that unfolds. Also, you can't enjoy the magic spells being cast, as much as you do while reading the book.

See it for the sake of seeing it, but don't expect too much.

Confusing Plot, But AMAZING FILM.

"A very enjoyable film with some breath-taking moments." First of All, I really want to tell that I'm not, and never interested in Kiddos films. I thought this film must have been a very childish, horrible kids jumping on there broomsticks. But I was wrong.

This film is not a kid film. This one has given a teenager treatement. And I liked that.

I also liked how the actors acted in this film. Specially Imelda Staunton as Dolores Umbridge. She was sort of love-to-hate. I loved Alan Rickman's performance was well. And Helena Bonham Carter can only be described as one word -- "WICKED".

Daniel's performance was also very-well. Other cast did perform fine. I have no problem with acting in this movie. Special Effects were always mind-blowing. All sets of this film were very impressive.

Only one thing which caused my rating to be 4 stars instead of 5 stars was the horrible editing and lack of screen-time. Just 127 MINUTES!! Horrible.

I wish It had much much more time. Overall, a very enjoyable film with some breath-taking moments. I strongly recommend this film to everyone-- 5 years kid to 60 years old granny!

Wizards.. Beware!! This is a version for "Muggles"
Jul 29, 2007 08:08 PM 1834 Views

Hmm I am a ardent follower of Harry potter series . So right from reading the fifth part …order of phoenix .I am waiting to watch the movie version and I am ….disappointed….and more so when I watched it first time of course I watched it twice.one ordinary version .and the other time IMAX .Thanks to prasadz .HYD. The largest IMAX screen in the world.

For the Wizards .who read the Harry books.and already aware of the "WORLD OF MAGIC”. I think it’s a dissapointment. The reason is the script has been very crisply made.edited.so that the muggles.who just watch the Harry movies .doesnt get bored.

I don’t think the photography is the best.I felt the flying scenes are better in the fourth part.even the back ground .score.In the magic world,  Voldemort!  whose name alone creates a shudder .was not seen as terrifying in the movie .I don’t think even kids will be scared seeing him.some how I felt odd seeing him in a suit on the railway platform.(harrys dream).

I think Hermione and Ron(completely) doesnt have any characterization.just seen hanging around Harry potter.

Hmm Harry(Daniel Radcliff) really looked handsome in the movie. and I believe he is improving movie by movie.the love story between him and Cho chang was just confined to the much  talked about  Kissing Scene .So I am not sure whether the people who are just following movies will understand why he left cho and go for Gi .(in future series.)

The one who did as dolores umbridge steals the show. Her performance was the best. Also Luna Love good . She suited  very well for that role and no one could have done better .Hmm for the first time George and Fred(WEASLEY bros) has got a good part in the movie version. That scene was very well done.

The portrayal of Grawp .(The tiny giant) half brother of hagrid.was done well.manily his facial expressions as a child.was done really well.

The climax.: Hmmm the climax was 3D in the IMAX version and I strongly suggest those who got a chance do watch the Imax version. Mainly the flying scenes .the climax. The duel between . He who must not be named and Dumbledore.

When I am reading the book I really can share sorrow with Harry when sirus black. The lone relation left to Harry .was dead.but was not able to feel the same while watching.

Overall as I said it was disappointment for the people who are already in the magic world  (Wizards), But the movie may run well at box office as it can be enjoyed by people who don’t follow Harry potter series books(muggles).

OK. Yes stuff was left out. Yes some things were inaccurate. And yes, at times the story jumped around. But I'll tell you what, if that's the price to pay for being able to see fantastic literature on the big-screen.I'll take a few inconsistencies any day.

For having the task of taking 870 masterful pages and turning them into a 2.5 hour movie, David Yates did one heck of a job. This movie is a must-see, no matter how you look at it. For book-readers, sure you notice the absence of certain parts, but you finally get to see what you've imagined in your head for years take place in real-live motion on the screen…and you know what, those few things left out, help you gain a better understanding anyway, because you have already read the in-between stuff. Then, in the same breath, this is a great movie for non-book-readers as well. For those HP fans who take the lighter approach of skipping the books and simply following along by the movies…you won't know what you're missing anyway. The biggest complaints about this movie will be from book-readers who wanted a 10-hour long, word-for-word re-creation of the book. Other than that, there is nothing to complain about. Acting was great, story-line was great, and the special effects were flawless.

(Slight Spoiler In This Paragraph) Being a book-reader, I knew heading in that I would have to be prepared to accept substantial cuts from all that takes place in the book. However, the parts that Yates chose to focus on, were by far, the most important ones; and the way in which he did it, left me speechless. Yates was clearly at his best at the movie's climactic ending. When reading those last few chapters, when Harry is at the Ministry, and there is the great battle, the book reads like a whirlwind. Everything is happening at once: death-eaters here, death-eaters there, Sirius finally getting the chance to fight, Moody, Ginny going on a tear and straight-up owning people. And you try to picture in your head what all this would look like…a million things going on at once, and trying to picture how wizards and witches really "fight" each other. Somehow, someway, Yates was able to create that fast-paced, action-packed, confusion, and then all of a sudden, like an orchestra going flat after their last booming note, Sirius Black is gone…just like in the book. This was the hardest part for me to swallow when reading the book, as tears ran down my cheeks, not only because Sirius was my favorite character, but because you go from such a "high" of seeing the Order save the day, to the unbelievable "low" of seeing Harry's godfather simply fade away. This is an emotion and thought process which was excellently portrayed in the film. Ironically enough, Yates was only warming up.

As for the Dumbledore/Voldemort showdown, I don't think that it could have been done better. In a Star Wars type fashion, Harry is being tempted by Voldemort to release his anger, to have his revenge on Bellatrix Lestrange, to have a taste of the dark side. And as we sit there fearing for confused, helpless Harry, we see a green fire of hope, and more like Master Yoda than any other fictional character, Albus Dumbledore appears and engages Voldemort in a wizard-duel that puts Gandalf and Sarumon to shame.

The way the movie engaged the audience and got their emotion kicking is a great film-making talent not found in many movies anymore. Think of the way Yates made you HATE Umbridge, just like the book. The way you felt bad for Snape when you saw his hidden past, just like the book. And think of the best two lines of the movie where you felt comfort, confidence, and safety on Harry's part. The first of these lines was Sirius Black to Lucius Malfoy: when the death-eaters are over-whelming the kids, Sirius appears behind Lucius with a firm, "get away from my godson." Then once again, when Harry is alone with Voldemort, Dumbledore appears and almost as if to initiate the duel, says, "It was a mistake for you to come here tonight, Tom." Overall, the movie was fantastic. The best of the five…by far. You just have to put aside the gaping holes of chapters that were left out, and look at what was done well. For the book-readers, imagine if you were forced to take only 400 of the 870 pages out of the book…you would take the most important ones that relate to the plot. So as much as the "prefect storyline" and the "Harry/Cho drama" and all that other stuff is a great read, the big screen simply doesn't allow enough time for it. As for the non-book-readers…pick up the books and get busy. Because as great as a job that Yates did with the movie…the woman he got the story from, Ms. Rowling, might just be one of the greatest authors of our time.

Now go spend 10 bucks and enjoy the show!

Harry Potter, children’s Movie? -Think Agian!
Jul 23, 2007 12:23 PM 3181 Views

The fame has gone beyond just being a children’s movie. Rowling has made it clear with the 5th part, Harry Potter and the Order of Phoenix. It’s a full fledged entertainer which is power packed with the right ‘masala’ for being a complete entertainer for all ages (a little better editing would have propelled it more)! However lacks in fun or the funny element (I expected, a little bit, though). The story, plot, special effects, acting, costumes, make-up, fight scenes, drama, performances, screenplay, emotions, intimacy…am I forgetting anything, I guess pretty much it, the entire curry cooked very well!

I watched this movie, after all the juggle, this Sunday afternoon at REX theatre, Bangalore. Actually this movie made me think, was this for children or adults? Teens may be, but not for kids… for sure!

Well to start with the plot was very well portrayed in the movie, though sometimes it looked like you are watching the abridged version of book. Most of the scenes would quickly remind you of the chapter in the book, but would get over quick, however fairly conveyed the messages and the story.

Another interesting area on which I would like to comment upon would be the special effects. I liked it! They make or break a Harry Potter movie. Very well picturized flying scenes, well sequenced, breathtaking heights, brilliant sound effects, flying witches and amazing flying horses. What more would you want?

Oh well, there was a keen importance given to costumes, I liked Sirius’s cloak, Hermione’s pink striped dress (and the way she wears her Tie), Imelda’s dress and off course Mr. Potter’s Suit! The make-up artists had spent good amount of time to ensure that every scene looked genuine and it did.

Performances go like this, Harry’s kind of shedding Ron and Hermione (I felt it). Evanna as Luna was brilliant. The best performances, however, were by Helena as Bellatrix and and Imelda as Umbridge. However I felt, because of the length of the book, the movie was made fast paced, where lots of performances just got missed like the Grawp, Grimmauld Place, Kreacher, Tonks, Quidditch, Giants, Centaurs etc.

Another interesting thing was the drama, emotions and the intimacy, well-well-well Mr. Potter’s onscreen kiss, an intimate one, was surely not for kids, made the crowds go howling. It was pretty much like any other Hollywood adult flick. Not to forget the blood on the faces of Harry and others after every fight sequence. The order of phoenix had grown out of the ‘children’s movie’ to an adult/teen entertainer, well!

What I missed though was the funny side of it, which was pretty much there in initial parts. Who says teens/adults don’t like fun? Anyways….another thing which I didn’t like was poor editing of the scenes of Ministry of Magic. The long dialogues, the last scenes of the Prophecy, Dumbledore’s and Valdemort’s fight sequence.

In short, a little over than an average watches! Worth watching once, if you are a Harry fan!

Absolute Rubbish- Waste of Money
Jul 22, 2007 01:56 PM 2121 Views

*I was really dissappointed by watching this particular release of Harry Potter. Too much of politics , lengthy dialogues, less of graphics, horrible editing. The movie started of quite well but then I was not able to understand head or tail of what was going on. Thankfully my daughter had read the book so she was in a position to explain the gaps. The role of Tonks was not at all significant . Why Harry Potter's girlfriend let the secret out was also not well explained. Harry Potter seemed to be a puppet in the hands of seniors and circumstance.A long prolonged kissing scene in the movie was absolutely unessential.

The movie felt boring at times. Special effects were a thankful diversion from the boredom of long dialogues. Some parts were really good I must say and enjoyable but overall the movie was unable to leave any lasting impression. It is now more of a hype than real movie magic.I hope the next release is done with more care and dedication and not only for money making taking advantage of the Harry Potter hype.Total money wasted.I strongly do not recommend anyone to watch this movie.*

Fantastic Experience
Jul 22, 2007 08:42 AM 1666 Views

Of all the five movies released till date I think this might be my favourite. The book was ridiculously overwritten but whoever wrote the screenplay is a genius. Paring it down to essentials and then creating that wonderful product that I saw on screen must have been a difficult task, but it was done and for that I'm glad.

The first thing that struck me was the magnificent cinematography; I don't think there could be anything more breathtaking in the Potterverse. Next were the performances; all cast members have matured and did a great job with their roles but Imelda Staunton as Dolores Umbridge stole the show.

She brought Umbridge of the book to life. The special effects were very good but one thing did irk and that was the close-up shots of the news items. I could've done without those. There were fun moments and there were the dark moments and there was entertainment to be enjoyed by all. What more could one ask for?

Entertaintment - Definitely, Fun -No Way
Jul 19, 2007 01:54 PM 1671 Views

There was a time when movies that were supposedly targeted at children were simple and fun.

Bad guys were bad and they lost, good guys were good and they won, good guys who turned bad suffered and bad guys who turned good were rewarded.

The music was fun and cheerful and blood shed was unheard of, SCARY ELEMENTS WERE KEPT AT A MINIMUM.

Movies were fun to watch, with loads of kiddy jokes, and special effects aimed at children.

Underaged kissing was at a minimum old people kissed but it was short, and after loads of cute scenes the maximum a child got was a peck on the cheeks or a brush on the lips which sent guffaws among the audience and left the boy blushing.

Times have changed now.

The good guys have dark streaks and its not clear as to who's good and who's bad, BAD GUYS WIN AND GOOD GUYS LOSE.

Music is eerie and rarely fun, children are shown bleeding under heinous torture, SCENES BORDERING ON HORROR ARE SHOWN.

Fun is unheard of, no QUIDITCH MATCHES, OR MAGICAL FUN CREATURES HERE(even a giant was shown in a unhumorous fashion), don't remember more than one scene that was specifically aimed at children, or would entertain them(even the OWL disruption scene was more importantly a rebellion against the system).

Kisses between two 15 year olds is long, passionate, and definitely not fun, even the discussion afterwords in not cute, the boy is not blushing, the girl is crying during the kiss, I've seen first kisses in adult movies that are less intense.

I CAN GO ON AND ON AND ON ABOUT LOTS OF THINGS THAT MAKE THIS MOVIE ANYTHING BUT FUN OR A CHILDREN MOVIE.

BUT THE FACT IS HARRY POTTER CEASED TO BE A CHILDREN BOOK FROM THE 5TH BOOK.

And its high time people realised this, the moment you start seeing this as teen/adult entertainment you will have completely different perspective of this movie/the books.

I FOR ONE WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO WATCH THIS MOVIE WITH THIS IN MIND AND THERE IS NO DOUBT THIS MOVIE WAS ENTERTAINING.

Special effects were superb, but the ministry of magic could have been more magical, TECHINCALLY THIS FILM WAS SUPERB WITH Brilliant CAMERA WORK AND SUCCEEDED IN MAINTAINING A DARK ATMOSPHERE THROUGHOUT(yes dark).

Acting was again superb hats of to Imelda Staunton who did a superb job as Dolores, I've never felt such loathing(and some fear), for any screen character in a long time.

The few jokes that were there and mainly involving Filch were fun.

The action scenes fell short and really a full scale fight between the Order and the Death Eaters that too at the ministry of magic had much more potential.

The entry scene between Dumbledore and Voldermort was fantastic and filled me with hope in this otherwise dark movie.

The entertainment value of this movie is unquestionable, it even met the somewhat lower expectations I had from it.

HOWEVER ITS STATUS AS A FUN FILM AND ESPECIALLY A Children's FILM IS SERIOUSLY IN DOUBT.

But still there are people who think Lord of the rings was meant for children(AS I SAY THIS, EXCEPT THE KISSING MOST Indian CHILDREN ARE REGULARLY EXPOSED TO Violence AND OTHER DARK ELEMENTS IN MOVIES HERE AS WELL AS OUR EPICS SO WE Don't REALLY CARE, the fun part is more important for us, we go in the movie expecting fun and don't really get any).

Watch with correct expectations and you wont be disappointed(infact be entertained).

-s NO FUN, lots of plot holes, feels kind-off rushed, lots of things/characters/scenes/sub-plots feel like they didn't get the attention they deserved.

+/-s content vs length(you choose), only the most important parts were shown, misleading as a children's film.

+s superb acting, superb technically, quite good as part in an ongoing epic, definitely entertaining with lots of hate, scary, hopeful, and visually spectacular moments.

total 6/10(i expected good and got it, I expected fun and received almost none, it however exceeded expectations in other departments, it extracted emotions from me that were hardly expected in a so called children's film, ONCE AGAIN ITS ALL ABOUT THE HYPE AND ONCE AGAIN YOU GIVE IN BECAUSE At least THE MOVIE Isn't BAD, HOW I PRAY FOR A HYPE FILM THAT ACTUALLY JUSTIFIES IT(die hard is very close and I'm hoping so will transformers).

Of Potter Pottiness and Muddled Muggles!
Jul 18, 2007 06:14 AM 2216 Views

Let's face it, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is the least liked book in the series!  And, at 700+ pages it's not exactly slim and trim either. The book did improve with repeated reading, but, to take a plodding, slow-paced book and to morph it into a movie containing appreciable tension and entertainment value is a daunting task. David Yates is the 4th is a long series of directors to attempt to bring his vision of the much loved series to the silver screen. Does he succeed? Read on and find out!

Heralded by many as the movie which nudges the Potter series over into the realm of adult entertainment, the movie is touted as having a dark, sinister atmosphere, singularly manifested by the heavy frowns on the foreheads of the Hogwarts students. The sole exception is Ron Weasley(Rupert Grint) who doesnt seem to have paid much attention to the scowl-as-you-go memo. Picking up where the Goblet of Fire ended, with the return of Lord Voldemort, Harry Potter(Daniel Radcliffe) finds himself the center of attention once again, but this time as'The Boy Who Lies'. The Ministry of Magic refuses to believe that Voldemort(Ralph Fiennes) is back, and is on a campaign to discredit Harry and Dumbledore(Michael Gambon). However, the witches and wizards who do believe Dumbledore are convinced that Voldemort is seeking a weapon this time around and have formed the secret Order of the Phoenix to fight him.

As part of the Ministry agenda to keep an eye on Dubmledore, the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, is the Under-secretary Dolores Umbridge(Imelda Staunton), Rowling's power-hungry figurehead of government, who tries to control every aspect of life at Hogwarts - with decrees, laws, and the ultimate hatchet - expulsion, while teaching very little DADA to the students. With a relevant contemporary side-note, Rowling has showcased the difference of idealogy arising between the govt and the free-thinkers in times of turmoil, with any opposition being instantly labelled'disloyal', a milder form of the word unpatriotic that we have been so familiar with in recent times.

Too young to join the Order, Hermione Granger(Emma Watson) takes matters into her own hands, spurring Harry to teach DADA to students willing to learn. Harry is once again involved in events an ordinary 15 year old wouldnt be able to handle - resisting Umbridge, a girlfriend and his first kiss, anger towards Dumbledore for ignoring him, making new friends like Luna Lovegood(Evanna Lynch), a Ravenclaw who has the uncomfortable habit of speaking the unpleasant truth, teaching his schoolmates DADA secrets and recurring dreams of Voldemort all coupled with the angst felt by any ordinary rebellious teenager. All of these factors culminate in the final showdown and battle between the Order of the Phoenix and the Death Eaters at the Ministry of Magic.

In this version of Rush Harry Rush, we have plot elements introduced so rapidly, accompanied by the choppiest editing in any of the Potter movies, that a large number of the non-readers who had the misfortune only to have a Potter fan in the family will be left feeling hopelessly muddled. Even the final exposition between Dumbledore and Harry fails to give answers to many questions raised . that is if anyone will even care by the end of this movie. Umbridge isnt the only one wielding a sharp hatchet here, the prohecy, Grawp, Grimmauld Place, Kreacher, Tonks, Quidditch are some of the few which have been sacrificed to the screenplay, slashed to allow the story to move forward at a rapid pace. I did read that the director wanted the ultimate battle to be absolutely stunning and that's sadly how the movie feels, a whole lotta filler material for the final showdown. Now if only that battle was even remotely interesting, this strategy might have suceeded ala POTC3. But I think this movie will weed out the Potter fans who will determinedly watch the rest of the series from the other folks, those who just dont care anymore.

I have continually been underwhelmed by the acting of the kids in the Potter movies, most of the acting here is as expected. The adults do stand out, especially Staunton as Umbridge, with an inspired poisonous pink presence and the most irritating little cough ever to grace celluloid. Helena Bonham Carter does an almost perfect impression of the madness of Bellatrix Lestrange, while Alan Rickman is criminally underused as Professor Snape. Gambon still comes across as a tired old man instead of the awe-inspiring, authoritative Dumbledore. When a wizard points out to Fudge'You have to admit Dumbledore has style' we are left wondering - maybe you had to be there to be similarly impressed.

The most irritating factor is the difference of creative vision through the movies. While I'm all for the change that allowed Alfonso Cuaron to make the pleasurable POA, the fact that this is a series seems to escape most people. So, from one version to the next, we have minor differences which add up to a distracting watch - from the overall look of each movie, to the differences in the way the Dementors are portrayed, Harry's Patronus which looks different each time, and, the portrayal of the the witches and wizards dissolving into black smoke(or white smoke, as the case maybe) in the final battle. This smoke effect, while looking stunning enough for this movie, and which might have looked stupid with people pointing wooden sticks at each other and yelling, does suspend disbelief that such an amazingly cool power would manifest itself only towards the 5th version of the movies? However, some of the more unfortunate special effects seem to have been retained, like the light sabre effect with the wands and the usage of the colors black for the'evil' wizards and white for the'good' ones.

Bottomline, this is an average watch ONLY if you are a fan of the Potter movies without reading the books.

If you are neither of the above, and are just slightly, remotely curious as to how it turns out without sitting through 2:15+half hour of previews, here's a 5 second plot summary of the movie -

Harry is the Boy Who Lies - Voldemort uses Divide and Conquer with the wizarding world - some mundane events and rebellion at Hogwarts - Voldmort, Harry and Dumbledore face off at the Ministry - everyone sees Voldemort - Death Eaters kill Sirius - prophecy, shmophecy - Harry is the Chosen One - The End!

Harry Potter is not only a phenomenon, he is a magnetic personality. He may just be a boy wizard but he gets in and out of such situations that one cannot but admire him. Lord Voltemort  whose name cannot be on any lip is his staunch enemy and tries to corner him in every possible way. This film is excellent but cannot just be compared with the book which is so absorbing that one cannot put it down. Rowling has created an all time history b producing thase books and for creating Harry Potter.

Any person who is reading this review will have seen the film or will be wanting to see it or has definitely read the book. Hence I do not want to reveal the story but only want to say this: Read the book, friend, see the movie and enjoy both. You will never be disappointed.Go for it in abig way, with great expectations and great interest and all will be fulfilled.
