Sometimes you cannot stop yourself from identifying with fictional characters. The superhero Hancock(Wills Smith) has so many typical human qualities that you can’t help from considering him as an individual with a lot of potential but highly misunderstood. The super hero is named after John Hancock. "John Hancock was a Massachusetts merchant and prominent patriot of the American Revolution. He served as President of the Second Continental Congress and was the first Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, but is perhaps most famous for his prominent signature on the United States Declaration of Independence."
Hancock, the superhero is dirty and unkempt, alcoholic, hungry and angry as well. Nobody loves him because nobody understands him. All his deeds are done in good earnest but end up to be disasters created by a jerk. Instead of lauding him as a hero, he is criticized often as a meddlesome idiot. The result is John Hancock is always very angry either at himself or at others. Enter public relations spokesman Ray Embrey(Jason Bateman), whose life Hancock saves but derails the train that almost killed Ray.
There starts a story of loyalty and friendship where Ray tries to clear Hancock’s reputation. He also befriends him and tries to cure his brazen character. Hancock soon becomes an unlikely part of his family but what Ray does not know is Hancock’s connection with his wife Mary(Charlize Theron). Though apparently Mary despises Hancock, Ray and his son are just too fond of him.
What I like about the movie is, it touches upon common subjects like love, marital life, and friendship in a realistic way. The movie shows that bad things may happen to good people but they don’t last forever. Ray’s unwavering faith on Hancock is rewarded as the superhero’s image changes for better. There is also poignancy on the attachment between Mary and Hancock when they realize that being close to each other actually drains their powers. Hancock is also similar to Amir’s character in Ghazini, in the way that he suffers from amnesia and holds a lot of anger within.
Will Smith’s Hancock brings memories of so many action characters that he has acted till now including Independence Day, Men in Black, I-Robot etc. Charlize Theron has also acted in Aeon Flux, though Hancock does not give her much scope of showing her physical prowess extensively. But the actress beautifully emotes with her big beautiful eyes. Her pairing with Will shows glimpses of the pairing between Trinity(Carrie Moss) and Neo(Keanu Reeves) of Matrix trilogy fame.
A little love and a little understanding can bring the goodness out of anyone with potential. But the love has to be pure. Hancock was a feel good movie and very different from the typical superhero stuff. Kudos to the writer. As usual Will performs well as a black angry superhero and is ably supported by Theron and Bateman. Good cinematography, realism and a believable script are also some of the assets of this movie.
*Best part in the movie:
*1. Hancock's suave transformed look from the dirty unkempt look.
- How he deals with a prison in mate and a bank robber.
3.The romantic brief kiss with Mary and the outcome.
4.The sweet way Hancock shows his gratitude to Ray by painting the moon.
A lot of people might be bored with this movie so only those watch, who value human emotions and life’s jewels like friendship, innocence, love and attachment.
- Thank You! We appreciate your effort.
