Gnomeo and Juliet Movie Reviews

The Love-story with a difference!
Jan 22, 2012 04:04 AM 3528 Views

Yesterday I watched a movie named "Gnomeo And Juliet", which was based on a most famous play of William Shakespeare "Romeo And Juliet", but this movie was different than many adaptations of the same play worldwide. It's an animation movie with Gnomes. the small creatures being the main attractions of the movie. Character sketching is similar to the original play, but many things have been changed like, the movie is more on comedy side, and the major change - the movie has an happy ending.

Two neighbours Mrs.Montague (voiced by Julie Walters) and Mr.Capulet (Richard Wilson) just simply hate each other, always throwing abuses at each other. Likewise the small gnomes non-living statues in their BLUE and RED gardens respectively also hate each other - they become living beings right after both of them leave for their offices. In BLUE garden, head woman is Lady Bluebury (Maggie Smith), who has a son named Gnomeo (James McAvoy), and in the RED garden, head man Lord Redbrick (Michael Caine) has a beautiful daughter Juliet (Emily Blunt). One fine day, they both crosses each other's path in an adjacent garden and started liking each other, but how can they continue with their growing love, when their whole family is against each other. There are villians and freinds on each side - Tybalt (Jason Statham), Nanette (Ashley Jenson), Benny (Matt Lucas), Shroom (no voice). Also there is one common friend a lone Pink plastic Flamingo Featherstone (Jim Cummings) who helped them in their quest for love, and yes, one killing machine too, Terrafirminator Lawn Mower (Hulk Hogan). So whether in the end will they be able to find their love or die like as portrayed in the original play. To know it, watch it.

The movie is a wonderful timepass, It goes on for 84 minutes, and nowhere in the movie, you felt bored, you enjoy it throughout the reels. Lovable characters, who looked cute despite of their fightings. All the characters are loosely or strongely based on the Shakespeare's play, for eg. Blueberry is like Lady Montague, Redbrick is Lord Capulet, Gnomeo and Juliet are as known Romeo and Juliet, Tybalt is Tybalt, and so on. (for full details check wikipedia) The movie is well-paced and directed by Kelly Asbury, who has been associated with many animation movies before in some or other roles, he has directed animation movies like Spirit Stallion of the Cimarron, and Shrek 2 before. Expressions are natural from characters, and voicing is good. There are 2-3 songs too in the movie, so as to maintain the singing nature of play, music by Elton John, Chris Bacon and James Newton Howard. The movie was released in February 2011 in US, and as per statistics on Wikipedia, made in $10million, and got a collection of $194million at box office till date. Some scenes are comic, make you laugh, and some are emotional, but all in all a good bundled packet of entertainment. I watched it on my lappy, but it's worth watchable even in theatres, if it releases there.

If you get a CD/DVD copy of this, grab and watch it, as it is a total timepass, equally stading for adult ad children likewise. My rating 4.5/5.
