'Feast of Love' movie review

This is one 'artsy' movie I wouldn't have even bothered to watch until I've atleast heard the names of the actors. My!What a huge mistake?!!!This film is filled with the two most recogniseable people from the creme-de-la-creme of Hollywood acting.

I was simply around one evening over my long vacation & was scanning through channels when this movie's starting credits appeared on screen & I caught the name ofGreg Kinnear, which enabled me to sit tight & watch this cosy film.

Bradley Smith(Greg Kinnear) is happily married to his wife,Kathryn Smith(Selma Blair) who's got an unusual fear of canines.Bradley owns a coffee shop near the University area which keeps his mind youthful by college students frequenting his place;as well as wise through discussions with University professors who also visit his cafe from time to time. His most special companion is Harry Stevenson(Morgan Freeman) who's a retired professor enjoying a nice & stable marriage to his wife,Esther Stevenson(Jane Alexander);although the couple is having depression issues over the death of their only son.Oscar(Toby Hemingway) is an ex-drug addict who works at Bradley's coffee corner & falls head over heels in love with Chloe Barlow(Alexa Davalos).Chloe also tends to get along well with Bradley & Harry.Unfortunately,Bradley just doesn't 'notice' much about the people around him & seems to carry a certain innocence when it comes to judging others.Harry on the other hand is very attentive of characters & situations. His skill comes into play when he realises another woman hitting on Kathryn,Bradley'swife. He somehow has an unusual feeling thatKathryn is capable of giving back love & affection to that very lady. Before long,Kathryn's a lesbian & Bradley'sdivorced.Soon,Bradley falls in love with his real-estate agent,Diana Croce(Radha Mitchell) who's having an affair with a married man,David Watson(Billy Burke).Davidwants to get a divorce from his wife, but resists doing do as to not harm his children & his family life.Sadly,Bradley again doesn't notice the typical signs which spell out S-H-E'S--N-O-T--T-H-A-T--I-N-T-O--Y-O-U.Diana accepts Bradley'smarriage proposal only to prove that she's not going to wait forever for David to turn around & see what his heart truly wants.Bradely on the other hand has to deal with another failed marriage with Harry soothing him by commenting,"Atleast this time,it's a man.".Strangely,Bradleyfeels no hatred towards Diana or David. He even has the guts to dare fall in love again!Meanwhile,Oscar& Chloe elope. On visiting the tarot card reader,Mrs.Maggalorian(Margo Martindale);Chloe learns that a terrible fate awaits Oscar& bravely committs herself to live every day to the fullest by making him happy.

One might feel that this is another film depcicting the many apects of love.Well, think again! This movie doesn't just deal with amor, but the spiritual side of it which many of us fail to think about. The closing scene where Bradleyexplains to Harry the meaning of God's interference in our life's plan really stands out, even though there are few words said.Greg Kinnear & Morgan Freeman do appear to be the two big giants in the film, but the rest come up to their level as well. This is a treat to great acting,as not even one cast member gives you a below average performance. This movie is based on Charles Baxter's novel under the same name(no,I haven't read it).Critically, the response was lukewarm with a few admiring it while others didn't like it so much.

Final grade- A-,no matter what the critics say,I do love this film & plan to read the book too.

PS- Yes,I'm a Greg Kinnear fanatic.I think he's got a certain charm that's impossible to beat.
