Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid Reviews

New York City United States of America
!!! MOST LIKABLE COWBOYS, WEST EVER HAD !!!
Jan 18, 2010 12:57 PM 1448 Views

Some movies you want to watch again and again. BCATSK is one of those movies which have their heart at right place, where every scene is the best scene, and every actor has given his or her best.Characters seem so real and so good that you start to feel that you really know them, and actors who have portrayed them, actually becomes those characters in your eyes. We all have this kind of feeling and the best example, for us Indians, is Mahabharata(whenever I imagine Karna, the face that comes to mind is of Panakaj Dheer ). BCATSK is one such movie and Butch Cassidy(Newmann) and Sundance Kid(Redford) are two such characters.

“Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid” may not seem to be a very attractive name but please don’t go by the name. It’s one of the most popular screen western ever made and is my personal favorite among them all. It blends adventure, romance, action and comedy to tell the story of West’s most likable outlaws ever. Based on the true life incidents of Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid, the leaders of ‘Hole in the Wall gang’ that once ruled the west.

ABOUT THE STORY : Its about the two nicest bad-guys who ever rode the west. No one is better than Butch when it comes to making plans on looting banks and robbing trains(“You just keep Thinking Butch, that what you are good at”- that’s what Sundance keeps telling Butch), and his sidekick Sundance is a wizard with a gun. One is very talkative while the other one is mostly silent and speaks only when necessary, but what a good pair of friends they form (might have inspired characterization of Jay and Veeru in Sholay, I am sure).

When railway authorities tires of ‘Hole in the Wall’ Gang, they put a group of best lawmen on their trail.

And When these two bungling bank and train robbers tire of running from the law, they set out for Bolivia, a Spanish town, with Sundance's Girl friend, Etta(Katherine Ross); They can scarcely speak enough Spanish to communicate and that’s where Etta helps them out.

In Bolivia, the trio forms “Bandidos YanQues” and make lot of bank robberies. Everything goes on well till they find that lawmen have discovered their location and have even reached Bolivia to catch them. Etta decides to leave them, sensing that their days may be numbered. A try to move into an honest living also don’t succeed, so they return back to robbery.

And One good evening, bad for them though, they faced the deadliest shootout getting their selves killed, much to my discontent. :(

Some of the Good scenes are :

  1. Train Robbery, both ways.

  2. Very first scene in a bar, where Sundance shows off his gun skills.

  3. Their first reaction of Bolivia, when they find out that it’s not such a big city but in fact just a small meager town

  4. The Long Runchase just after the last train robbery, very long scene, but very well excecuted without it being getting boring, very adventurous.

  5. Shootout in the end.

  6. Last but the best of them, the picturisation of the song “Rain Drops keep Falling on my head”, especially the bicycle tricks by Newmann.

Everything is excellent about “Rain Drops keep Falling on my head” song, be it the words of Hal David or the Music or Burt Bacharach or the voice of B J Thomas. The location and picturisation, the cycle stunts of Newmann, and the beauty of Katherine Ross to complete it all. I never forget to humm the tune whenever riding a two wheeler, especially a bicycle. Giving out the Song lyrics in the first comment to this review.

ABOUT THE MOVIE : BCATSK came in 1969 and was a huge box office hit.it won 4 Oscar Awards in 1970 which includes ( Best story and Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Music and Best Song(No doubt for “Rain Drops keep…”) other nominations were for Best picture, director and Sound). BCATSK also finds a place among the 100 best movies of all time by AFI.

Its 110 minutes long and I felt like it ended too soon, few minutes more would have been pleasure to watch.

ABOUT THE CAST AND CREW : Direction of George Roy Hill is flawless. Music is appropriate and very soothing to ears. Story and screenplay forms one of the highlights alongwith dialogues that are very witty and amusing. Cinematography is wonderful, it still, after around 40 years, feels very refreshing and fabulous to watch.

This movie belongs to Newmann and Redford and I wonder who among them has done it well. I liked both of them, one can’t choose between, Jay and Veeru, after all. We start to remember actors only after we see some powerful memorable performances by them in some movies. That’s what these two actors have delivered in this one.

Katherine Ross as Etta, provides the grace and romance to the story, she is the one that binds the two leading characters. She’s a pleasure to watch.

SOME WORDS FROM THE MOVIE :

Katherine - “Butch?”

Butch - “Huh”

Katherine - “D’you ever wonder if I’d met you first, we’d been the ones to get involved”

Butch - “Well, we are involved, Etta. Don’t you know that?”

Butch - “You are riding on my bicycle with me. In some Arabian countries that the same as being married”

Then they laugh and suddenly Sundance arrives.

Sundance - “What are you doing?”

Butch - “Stealing your woman”

He thinks a bit and they says “Take her. Take her”

Butch - “You are a romantic bastard. I will give you that.”

FINAL VERDICT : Its a must watch movie and if you haven't seen it yet then you are surely missing something. For those who love western movies, it provides a bit change from usual all desert, silent and hard approach with guns firing every now and then, that most western's follow. For those who don't like Western.. Well.. You might like this one as it has very witty dialogues and a soft romantic touch to it, very less voilence. If not for anything else, one can Watch it just for "Rain Drops Keep Falling on my Head" time and time again.
