Anne hathaway as jane austin
maggie smith
julie walters
james mcavoy
Director .julian jarrold
Based on the early life of miss austin
a simple plot, a country squires charming daughter has to choose between two men, one a penniless lawyer with a rich uncle [delightfully played by ian richardson ]and a fashionable young man with a reputation, who is rivalled by lady greshams [maggie smiths ]equally insipid but solid victorian nephew mr. wisley, who proposes to jane in a very delightful premise, obvously jane falls for the lawyer and the two upon being rejected by the uncle [for marriage ]even embark on an elopement, but janes common sense prevails and she aborts it, there is immense chemistry between the two leads to turn this into a battle of wits and sexes and sparks fly everytime the meet much to the audiences delight,
Simple plot and masterful execution, the costumes, the ballroom dancing the witty dialogues are perfection itself like miss jane austen herself, she would indeed be proud to see anne hathaway potraying her as she has but tom le froy [ mcavoy] is equally compelling as the young fop, his costumes made me envious and I know what im wearing to the next fancy dress party .he is going places for sure as a young talent, hes got a persna about him too like jude law in early days .
Anne is delicious to look at and proves devil wears prada was no flash in the pan, and julie walters as janes practical mum is incomparable, but dame maggie smith, shes an enchantress shell make you laugh by her mere expressions as the rather snobbish english aristocratic lady, her every mannerisms is pen ultimate and the portayal is indeed totally delightful, the rest of the cast, and there are quite a few are immaculate too, yes a few liberties have been taken but the overall product is charming .
This relates to a time when it was impossible to even imagine women could sucessfully manage on their own as a writer, the way maggie says upon discovering that janes a writer of novels
A writer, can anything be done about it
Just about sums up the victorian eras views on women and how they were supposed to behave, but janes rebellious yet romantic character is meticulously developed and her ironical comments on womens role in victoraian times are both funny yet ring extremely truthful,
Live by your pen what sort of a silly notion that is
This is the line repeated to her by every character, yet her determination remains undaunted
Her encounter with maggie smith where she is told by her ladyship to immediately accept the favour her nephew has done by proposing to her despite her shortcomings is just too good to be true, obviously her reply is a delight which I will leave you to see for yourself
This is the way to make a period piece come to life, the best english movie based on fact to come out of our island in a decade
And the ending with its touching yet cerebral conclusion will bring tears to your eyes
I'm a a man who unashamedly admits to being j anes fan yet I felt sorry for her personal loss and the movie aptly portrays what made her become the dreamy spinster she was, but imagine if she had her way with true love, then we would have been deprived of six of the best works written for english language by a master authoress
An unmissable treat for all sexes and races, its a must see as it will warms the coldest corners of your heart and make you read jane with a new perspective indeed .
Thanks for reading, im off to watch it again and please watch it in cinema as youll miss the absolutely immaculate details amazingly portrayed otherwise .
