I am not sure if what kind of people would be able to watch this movie fully to the end, its so painful and full of realities of life, may be only two kind of people will appreciate this movie, one who goes through such circumstances and one who doesn't go through but are sensitive enough to understand what kind of lives people are living all over world in a "family" structure.
I have always looked with a certain perspective towards men and their behavior but after watching this movie , I think they stand a fair chance of being qualified as spotless young boys and then they convert into a certain person due to their circumstances and then women leave them as it becomes unbearable to live with them even if you still love them, this is plain misfortune for both of them and nothing can be done about it unfortunately.Such is life.
This is the story of Wade, a local police officer or rather story of every other boy who is physically abused by their fathers, their mothers die a silent death sometime later, their siblings just 'run' away to better places for their own survival.Later on Wade goes through a troubled marriage as his wife cannot stand him and he tries to win back his daughter Jill, but he cannot. His other girlfriend also leaves him later on.When he loses everything including his job, he accidentally kills his father in a scuffle and himself dies later on.
Some of the dialogues I really liked in this movie are-
Wade's ex-wife tells this to Wade at his mother's funeral 'Women live their whole life with their sounds turned off and then they die one day' referring to his mother.
Wade's brother Rolf says'I was a careful child, I became a careful adult , I saved myself from the affliction of our dad's violence" .
Two people have acted very well in this movie , one is Nick Nolte as Wade and James Coburn as his father. This movie got two academy award nominations and got one in the form of James Coburn as best supporting actor.
Thanks for reading my review.
