Ishq aur bullet dono nikalte chati fadne hai

"Ishq aur bullet dono nikalte chaati fadne hai" or sample this "log kahenge aashiqi mein maara gaya aur ladki bhi nahin mili" these are the few dialogues from Yeh saali Zindagi - a movie which keeps you on edge of your seat thru out.

A film with ensemble of high performers like irfan khan, saurabh shukla, chitrangada singh, yashpal sharma and new entry arunoday singh.every body did justice to there roles.

Dialouges are sharp and witty sometimes and wrote and delivered as per real life situations.hence lots of bad words read gaalliya used(hence movie is strict no no for childrens and to girls u dont want them to hear these slangs).

Screenplay /story is good.music is ok with song shararara is best among all.

The plot revolve arounds two men madly in love and how there paths crossed and they come in front of each other.

One is Arun(Irfan) a CA by profession who is madly in love with chitrangada who in turn like ministers son in law other is kuldeep played by Arunoday a small time gangster who wish to leave this career for his nagging wife after one last big heist.

It also has sub plots of Kuldeep's boss bade(yashpal) and his small brother(chote) who wants to eliminate bade for control of gang and foreighn accounts.

There is also character of jailor brilliantly played by sushant singh who keeps changing sides with kuldip bade & chote.

its interesting to see how irfan and arunoday come across each others way.because of a kidnaping which went wrong and how irfan get entangled in mess his lover created.

Overall a must watch movie for those who like reality based movies and filmi dialogues.

Irrfan Khan excels; Smart Dialog entertains!
Feb 14, 2011 11:22 AM 3346 Views

By calling itself ‘Yeh Saali Zindagi’, the film projects itself as a new age bollywood flick with an attitude. Its masala is heartily delivered to you through its well written dialog. As it manages to trap you and times confound you with its myriad twists, its likeable characters mouthing smart-but-raw lines engages you. The songs too are decent and complement the film.

The film has multiple plots crisscrossing each other. One is about Arun (Irfan Khan) an accounting whiz who is hopelessly in love with a Priti (Chitrangada Singh) who sings in hotels for a livelihood. But she is in love with Shyam who is set to be married to the daughter of a Minister. On the other hand, there is Kuldeep (Arunoday Singh) who seeks domestic bliss from wife Shati (Aditi Rao Hydari) but can’t part ways with a well paying life of crime.

Things get complicated when a jailed former henchman of the Minister arranges a kidnap that goes wrong. The story then gets into a spiral of deceit and corruption. What puts you off is its motley of characters each of whom is introduced with a narrative. Contrived as its characters and twists may seem, you give up trying to make sense of it and enjoy the flow.

Despite it having a good amount of bloodshed, the film is not violent. Though dealing with goons, the movie can be funny! The good thing about it is that it doesn’t give you a heavy head and you may as well enjoy it again, for its dialog, if telecast on TV anytime in future.

Shot around Delhi, it is nice to see that movie makers in the recent years have shed the Mumbai obsession in their films, especially if it had anything to do with goons, guns and money. The new flavor that these films carry is surely ringing in the moolah.

Among its leads, Irfan Khan steals the show as the despondent lover, ready to give up all for a woman who doesn’t love him! And he does it willingly! Chitrangada, well, all her roles seem the same! Abhimanyu Singh who made his mark in Aisha and Mirch was probably too sophisticated to play a goon. Still, it’s good work! Pretty Aditi Rao Hydari had little else to do except slap Kuldeep and be served with his lip-smacking recipe to tranquilize her!

Gangsters, corrupt politicians, financiers with shades of grey aren’t usually a fertile ground for a new story. It is where directors like Sudhir Mishra make up for it by bringing in too many characters, especially quirky ones, forced twists and raw dialog. But made on a modest budget, ‘Yeh Saali Zindagi’ is watchable and would make a decent choice for some weekend fun.

Realistic presentation of REAL life thru REEL life

What a movie! I was simply bowled over by the directors presentation of human feelings - greed, love, betrayal, aggression, humor etc etc There are many dialogues in the movie which made me laugh out loud - the movie is more on the comic side.

Acting -

Aditi Rao Hydari( the girl opp Arunoday singh) - Boy o Boy! what a wonder she is - best good looking, good acting, good dancing, best onscreen presence, best romantic scenes etc etc Throughout the movie I was bowled over by her beauty(mostly) and acting. She will def make it BIG.

Irrfan Khan - Boy o Boy! what an actor this guy is.no wonder his true talent has been finally recognised in bollywood.he has delivered splendid performance as a Finance Whiz Professional! Wonder what this guy does for rehearsing an act, he delivers it so nicely.

Arunoday singh was good but he was not the best.he still needs to improve on his acting and dialogue devlivery skills, I guess the director knew this hence the actor rarely got scenes in which he spoke.

Chitragandha singh - she is ok but not as good compared to above three.I thot the movie was more of feelings(soft corner) of Sudhir Mishra towards Chitragandha Singh(In the movie Irrfan khan has tremendous feelings for Chitragandha but she doesnt have any feeling)

Baschandru021y the story is about two WHIZ KIDS - one finance professional(Irrfan Khan) and the other as a FUNDOO and Practical Bureaucrat(Sushant Singh) who figure out interesting ways to come out of difficult situations.

Then there is an emotional aspect of LOVE which has been beautifully presented in the movie - more aptly Irrfan loves chitragandha loves somebody else loves money.

Also there is greed aspect wherein coz of money a plot is arranged to kill a don.

I thot the movie was a straight copy of PHAS GAYE RE OBAMA wherin the protagonist comes out of situations with wit.

The movie is filled with abusive language. The best dialogue in the movie - "Udta Teer G#$ mein Ghusa liya"

Strict warning: Do not watch this with family and kids since the violence, abusive language, kissing scenes might @##@ them.

Okay, as always, a few precautionary warnings and points to note before you read this review:

  1. I love most of the movies I watch. But me writing a review for one is rare. The only one to have earned that rare distinction in recent times is Raajneeti. You could use that fact as a yardstick to scale this review up/down as per your tastes.

  2. This may not be the kind of movie you could take your girl/boyfriend to.(Then again, you could take the risk if you saw DevD together and/or are aware of Sudhir Mishra chhap cinema) Frankly, I wouldn’t be comfortable watching this movie with my parents around either, but I’m aware of exceptions to this perception that I harbour.

  3. I don’t want to be branded a misogynist, but girls, you MAY not relate to this movie. But I guarantee you that it’ll be handy to have a tough guy around just in case you need help with the rugged dialogue.

  4. The film is rated A by the censor board and yet, around a dozen words have been beeped out. You know what that means!

  5. Eat some chyawanpraash before the movie. You’ll need to pay more attention than you paid in Trigonometry class. It is very likely that you will miss an important twist if you try answering calls/messages. So keep your eyes glued to the screen as much as possible and trust me, it won’t be easy to look anywhere else!

That should be it, so here goes…

I know this movie has been classified as a thriller by many critics. But for me, this was the best love story I’ve ever seen. All the YRF and KJo fans are free to disagree with me for that. First things first, Sudhir Mishra has done it one more time after Hazaaron Khwaaishein Aisi. He deserves to be lauded for breaking the barriers with YSL yet again. It’s only directors like Mishra that can be entrusted with the responsibilty of raising the level of Indian cinema to global standards. Awesome screenplay, splendid direction. Respect for the man! Sheer respect.

YSL is about true, unadulterated love. It’s a story of loyalty and betrayal. It’s about trust and the lack of it. The story revolves around a lot of different characters and it’s difficult to pinpoint to one protagonist. Each character is equally important to the central theme, love(or hate). YSL will urge you to delve deep into the depths of human emotion and explore myriad angles of the same feeling. Unlike a Sooraj Barjatya film, YSL forces you to ponder over the grey shades of even the most positive character.

Okay, I must confess that I love Chitrangada Singh a lot, but even after a film like YSL, if she’s not nominated for all the Best Actress awards next year, then all I’d do is pray to God to bless the organizers with some common sense. Though this may not be a first, with YSL, Chitrangada breaks the mould of the stereotypical Bollywood heroine. The ease with which she portrays the complex character of Priti is remarkable. Her enigmatic persona infused with her signature style is something she keeps bringing back to screen, film after film.

The entire cast of the movie is so aptly chosen that even every extra looks and feels his/her part. Irrfan Khan is at his regular best, as is Saurabh Shukla with his effortless portrayal of a Gujju businessman who’ll go to any extent to earn a quick extra buck. Arunoday Singh and Aditi Rao Hyadri are both amazing discoveries and make each of the now infamous 22 kisses seem so un-Hashmi-like. Sushant Sharma as the quintessential debauch cop does complete justice to his role too.

The dialogue of the movie does deserve a special mention. Sample these:

‘Aaane waali peedhiyaan mere jaise deewanon kee misaalein de kar kahengi ki iss jaise deewane toh kam hee paida hote hain’

‘Tum mein kuch toh baat hogi jiski wajah se mujhe woh lagta hai jo mujhe lagta hai, aur tumhe woh nahi lagta jo lagna chahiye!’

‘Agar main marr gaya toh log kahenge kee ashiqui mein marr gaya aur ladki bhi nahi mili!’

‘She’s like maa ka Rajma Chawal’-Irrfan Khan when describing Chitrangada’s character to a firang chick. She doesn’t get what that means. So he explains, ‘Kidney beans, you know kidney beans?’ Firang goes ‘Wow, she must really be something for you to describe her like that!’

Music is by Nishat Khan, a little known sitarist. Google says this is his first film as music director, which doesn’t show in his work at all. I was in love with the soundtrack right from the opening credits. All the songs gel seamlessly with the screenplay. The background score is crisp and catchy.

Mishra manages to maintain the suspense throughout the film and keeps you guessing as to what will happen next. The build-up towards the climax is well defined is sure to impress most Rajnikanth fans as well! And just when you feel that the movie’s ended, there’s something in you that’ll keep you glued to see if it could be changed. And just when you give up, the screen could throw in a huge surprise!

All in all, if you can manage to sit through the contorted storyline with a little bit of concentration, there’s little probability of you disliking this offbeat film. I personally, was contemplating booking seats for the next show as well, but the Sindhi in me stopped me from doing so. So maybe, I’ll have to wait until the charismatic combination of Mishra and Singh returns to create magic with their next, Dhruv, where Chitrangada supposedly plays a double role. Now that’s what’ll really be double my money’s worth! Until then let’s raise a toast to Yeh Saali Zindagi!

Ye Saali Zindagi:Quirky Gangstas And Stupid 'Love'
Feb 04, 2011 07:42 PM 38181 Views

Guns, girls, profane language...a recipe that has often been seen before. So, what makes Yeh Saali Zindagi different from what you've already seen? Well, nothing much except the fact that the expletives and the cuss words are as real (and very frequent) as it gets, coupled with dark humour that surprises with its quirkiness now-n-then. The uniformly wonderful performances are a definite highlight too. Sudhir Mishra keeps you interested in his story for most parts as the mere mortals display their selfishness in making their 'life' better.

Good writing when tackled well makes celluloid beautiful. Story-screenplay by Sudhir Mishra (while the dialogues by Mishra-Manu Rishi) discovers the underbelly of crime and passion very well. The bullets fly off but a better way of getting things done is by ruthlessly squeezing the testicles. Ouch. The 'woman' is regularly addressed as a 'bitch' and you are delightfully confused as to where her 'loyalty' lies. People die-or-live based on the 'timing' and 'need'.

So true a fool is love, that in your will,

Though you do anything, he thinks no ill.

-William Shakespeare

The couplet sums up the state-of-mind of Arun (Irrfan Khan), a man adept at duping and bumping off people, falls for the coquettish charms of a club singer Priti (Chitrangda Singh). And becomes a part of the kidnap drama of a spoilt brat Shyam (Vipul Gupta) by a gang-pawn Kuldeep (Arunoday Singh). Police Inspector Satbeer (Sushant Singh), crime king Bade (Yashpal Sharma), his spineless spooky younger brother Chote (Prashant Narayanan), Arun's massage-friendly boss Mehta (Saurabh Shukla) and Kuldeep's smooch-happy, short tempered wife Shanti (Aditi Rao Hydari) are other crucial parts of the jigsaw puzzle. Everyone is hoping for a better future and for that they're willing to wipe out whatever comes in their own way. Only Arun is the one who falls prey to an astray bullet in pursuit of selfless love in this selfish saga.

As I said in the beginning, writer-director Sudhir Mishra keeps you interested for most parts but there are portions when the film tends to slacken up. A tighter editing (maybe by 15-20 mins) would have made it even better. Also, the usage of cuss words and the expletives, at times, seems forced, just to create the effect and get a response from the front-benchers. The frequent smooches between Arunoday and Aditi are clearly meant for titillation. The over all impact and the irreverent climax leaves a mark (the utilisation of dark humour even in the serious situations is really quirky at times).

Irrfan Khan, as expected, is very good. The dialogue delivery, the dead pan expressions, an uninhibited realism...this guy is in a league of extraordinary gentlemen. Chitrangda Singh holds her own amongst a deluge of scruffy looking men. She oozes sensuality, strength and vulnerability. Arunoday Singh is surprisingly quite impressive. He was the weak link in his last film 'Mirch'. But here, he holds his own against seasoned actors. Definitely an actor who's hungry to develop into someone worthwhile. Vipin Sharma (Darsheel's father in Taare Zameen Par) excels in a cameo of a slimy, foul mouthed side kick. Saurabh Shukla is in good form. Sushant Singh and Yashpal Sharma are impressive.

The title track 'Yeh Saali Zindagi' has been composed well by Nishat Khan while Swanand Kirkire's lyrics are thought provoking in all the songs. Sachin Kumar Krishnan's cinematography is very real and captures the various nuances of the small towns in the heart of North India superbly. Archit Rastogi's Editing utilises impressive cuts but as mentioned earlier, the film could have been further chopped to make the flow even more appealing.

Yeh Saali Zindagi is not meant for family audience. I don't think too many women will enjoy it either. But, as a piece of cinema its impressive. Watch it if you're in for gangsters and a thing called 'love'.
