Govind Nihlani tells this crime-story with the help of his brilliant camerawork. Thakshak is a grim crime thriller where violence plays hard in the background of the screenplay. It focusses on the psychology of criminals which leads to terrorising acts.
The fim starts on the lands of a business empire which has a scary face of Mumbai underworld. Ishaan and Sunny are close friends. Sunny's grandfather has built a construction empire with assistance of Ishaan's father. In the name of this construction empire, a lot of blood of the innocents flows to maintain the profits, status and egos of it's beholders.
Sunny played by Rahul Bose as a person is a short tempered, self dominating sort of a guy.
Ishaan played by Ajay Devgun is completely opposite to that of Sunny. He is honest to Sunny and his family. He has a dislike towards his profession, but he can't help but walk on the path shown to him by his father.
Amrish Puri plays Ishaan's father who has vowed to give his whole family to the gory business. Ishaan walks this very path.
Suman played by Tabu is a character very gentle, but strong enough to see in the face of terror. Suman is the one who brings the power to dare n' face the truth in Ishaan's life.
Nethra Raghuraman plays Sunny's girlfriend, and a friend to Ishaan.
Govind Namdeo plays a cop who is on trail of a murder case.
The way these characters interract with each other in different circumstances forms Thakshak.
Thakshak is a look at the mafia world from within. Here the characters cannot be categorised in black or white. Each n' every character except that of Tabu have gray shades. The characterisation is very strong, showing the story's characters as humans and not heroes or villians. The movie moves forward with a steady pace. Each n' every scene carrying a lot of information for the proceedings of the movie. When the movie starts, I was totally confused as what the hell was happening onscreen. But as the movie proceeded, I could get with the scenes at the beginning of the film.
Some of the scenes which form the limbs of the movie have been listed below;
1. Ishaan's entry on a construction site where he is thretens a man to move out of Mumbai.
2. Sunny in a drunken state quotes Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru's speech after which he kills an old man (A. K. Hungal) for a petty reason.
3. The scene where Ishaan is involved with Sunny in killing of a family and the song 'Toofan ki raat' which follows.
4 Suman's interactions with Ishaan.
5 The scene where Ishaan tells his feeling of leaving the mafia world to Sunny.
6 The scene where Ishaan introduces Suman to Sunny.
7 Ishaan's confession to Suman.
8 Ishaan's torture by the police in the trail of the murder case.
9 The scene where Ishaan saves Sunny, even after having an opposite state of mind.
There are many more for which you have to watch this flick.
Govind Nihlani handles Thakshak effectively. But I do not understand why he went to comercialize the subject. Was it for the box office success. Still his direction is fabulous. The camera work is fantastic focussing on the expressions of each n' every character. Music by A. R. Rehemaan is brilliant. His scores match the mood of the project. Rang De is beautifully coreographed. Khamosh Raat goes deeply romantic. Boondon se Baatein leave the feet tapping. Jhumbalika although being a hit doesn't serve any purpose in the movie. Toofan Ki Raat leaves one spellbound with it's high-pitched haunting tune. Dholna is beautifully placed in the background of one of the moments of the movie.
Ajay Devgun plays Ishaan as if he himself was Ishaan. His dark mysterious yet innocent eyes play the whole Ishaan for him. Rahul Bose is brilliant as Sunny. He keeps the character which could have otherwise gone overboard in control. He shows the psyche of a self centered man effectively. Tabu looks gorgeous in the skin of a simply lovable character. Her way of showing the gentleness as well as the strength of an innocent being is praiseworthy. Nethra Raghuraman does not suit the role. She spoils the effect of the movie as she steps in to shake a leg in Jhumbalika.
Thakshak is a story told effectively with the help of strong human characters, but goes a lill' bit amiss in the effort of going commercial.
