''The evil that men do goes on and on...'' blurts Bruce Dickinson in a famous Iron Maiden song of the same name. What Thakshak does is to remind us of that fact.

Choosing between right and wrong is perhaps the true test of a human being. We like to think of ourselves as being good, nice and decent people compared to the truly evil people that are found in our society. But what we don't understand is that we are only that close to evil; and a few of us are already indirectly linked to it. Right and wrong is not a choice by itself but brings along with it the baggage of family, friends; people who are extremely dear to us. Choosing to do right always means having the courage to turning against those very people on whom you depend for sustenance; those who have nurtured and sheltered you and have your love, respect and affection and yet have been involved in unpardonable acts.

How do you confront someone to whom you have sworn allegiance ? Is there a breaking point for each person before he decides that the truth must prevail no matter what the cost ? Perhaps the life of one of your own loved ones. Although no one would like to admit in public, people by nature would not fight injustice or atrocities until they themselves are at the receiving end or buried knee deep in it. Sadly but yet believably, the hero of this movie does just that.

The movie also portrays the misfortune and despair of perfectly innocent people who are harassed for no other reason than for happening to own their own home and trying to live their own lives.

Ajay Devgan is Ishaan the only son of Nehar Singh ( Amrish Puri), the henchman for Joda bhai, an underworld don involved in several illegal activities. Joda bhai's rival is Feroz. Both Joda bhai and Feroz have a penchant for acquiring prime pieces of real estate, both legally and illegally, and developing them to make more money. One such piece of property is Amritkunj, where a retired senior citizen named lives with his family. The old man refuses several overtures from both dons to buy his property. Sunny ( played brilliantly by Rahul Bose) is Joda bhai's depraved, reckless, ruthless and ambitious grandson and apparent heir to his illicit empire. Like his father, Ishaan is sworn by allegiance to protect and constantly accompany Sunny. Sunny display a brash, go-getter attitude and the way in which he coolly kills a helpless retired school teacher who verbally challenges him early in the movie leaves one shocked. As the stakes to acquire Amritkunj are raised, Sunny decides to do things his way and guns down the old owner and his family after getting the owner to sign on forged documents transferring the property to Joda bhai. Ishaan, held back by his word of allegiance is a silent and helpless spectator to all the killings of Sunny and his men. That is , until he meets Suman(Tabu) and is carried away by her simple nature and poetic talents. Suman detests violence and as Ishaan falls in love with her, he contemplates leaving the world of crime.

But things come back to haunt Ishaan as Sunny has his eyes on the property where Suman lives with her mother. Ishaan makes it clear to Sunny that he will not tolerate any attempt to acquire Suman's property. Also, by chance, Suman happened to pass by the same area when the Amritkunj killings took place and she has observed Sunny's car parked outside the compound. Ishaan does not stop Suman from testifying before the police about her observations on the night of the Amritkunj killings. News about Suman's testimony reaches Joda bhai, Nehar Singh and Sunny. Nehar arrives at Sunny's hangout to get the keys to destroy his car, but Sunny suspects Nehar of betrayal and trying to shield Ishaan's girlfriend, Suman, and in a fit of rage shoots and kills him. The rest of the movie deals with Ishaan's confrontation with Sunny and his reconciliation with Suman.

Ajay Devgan, Tabu and all the main actors give fine performances. But the standout performance is from Rahul Bose as Sunny. He gives a great portrayal of the corrupted, rich youth in the country and their mindless criminal misdeeds. The direction is top notch except for the inevitable moments of weakness where characters have to cry their way through the emotional scenes. Remember, after all, you are still watching a Hindi movie!

The movie disturbs you to think that there are characters like Sunny out there. Then, you go on to realize that many do exist in real life. As you start to empathize with the hapless victims who will eventually get in their way, you wonder, who will account for these terrorists ?

Review Of Thakshak

Quotes - A Section Which Lines memorable dialogues from the film.

Oops - A Section Which Points Out any blunders or mistakes in the film.

Psst - A Section Which points out any incident during the making of the film

Director - Govind Nihalani

Script - Govind Nihlani & Kamlesh Pandey

Thakshak is a name of a Killer Snake in ''The Mahabharat''. Here Thakshak is Rahul Bose. Govind Nihalani directs and co-writes this predictible story of the son (Ajay Devgan) of a famous underworld gangster (Amrish Puri) who wants to leave his fathers business but can't due to a commitment made by his father to Rahul Bose's Granddad (Who plays the role of a famous godfather like gangster). Anyone who has seen the fabulous ''Parinda'',''Satya'',''Ghulam'' or ''Kabzaa'' will be miles ahead of this script. Top-Notch performances by Ajay Devgan, Tabu (in a very small but important role), Amrish Puri, Govind Namdeo (as a strict and an honest cop). The saving grace of this film is a brilliant and top class performance by Rahul Bose. Incidentally this is Rahul Bose's first Hindi Film. Watch this movie only to see Rahul Bose.

Quotes

1) Abhi iski nath utarni hai.

2) Aurat ke aasoo se talwar pe zung lag jati hai.

3) Mera dimag kabhi kabhi sarakh jaata hai.

Psst.

1) This is Rahul Bose's first hindi films. He had acted in only 2 independent English movies ''English August'' and ''Bombay Boyz''. He is remembered for his role in India's first English Soap ''A Mouthful of Sky''. In that serial it was only his role which was widely appreciated.

2) Ajay Devgan's Company had Distributed and Ajay Devgan Co-Executive Produced this movie.

Oops

1) Although Govind Nihlani often said that this movie has been set in post-emergency India all the setings are of the late 90's.

2) In the scene following the scene where Ajay Devgan has been Beat Up by the cops, he is shown with a swollen face. In the next scene it is gone.

3) Keep watching Rahul Bose's face when he is thinking of killing his friend ''Randhir''. He is shown clean-shaved and unshaved in simultaneously.

4) When Ajay Devgan saves Rahul Bose's life from rival gangsters by making the car bang against the wall, the car burns to flame although in a circumstance like this the car would have been crushed and not burned.

5) It is shown that Tabu goes to learn Urdu during the 1992/93 riots in Bombay. She is shown to be hindu. Why would she then learn urdu? That too during the riots of 1992/93.

Govind Nihalini's brilliant crime thriller
Dec 24, 2003 05:01 PM 4439 Views

By 1995,I had read and heard a lot about the great movies Govind Nihalani had made but I had seen none of them. One afternoon while watching a weekly programme India This Week on DD-Metro I saw the preview of his then forthcoming movie-Drohkaal.Alongwith the preview there was series of behind the camera scenes and interviews about the movie which had wooed audience in film-festivals even before its release. From what I saw I realised that Drohkaal was a hard-hitting movie. At that time I was a fan of Ajay Devgan stunts but his carrier was on a low phase.I just dreamt that if ever Govind made a commercial film with Ajay Devgan as its hero what will be like.4 years later when Thakshak was released I smiled pleasantly on seeing that the dream was realised. However the flopping of the film made me feel that it is not good. Then one of my friends called it a damp-squib as he had a big hang-over of Vaastav-on similar lines and released around the same time.In all this I almost missed watching Thakshak. However when one of my other hostel-mate gave me rave review about it and said that it is a must watch for intense movie buffs we brought the VCD to hostel and I still remember that we watched it in one of our seniors computer on the day of Eid and finished it before going to our friends place to celebrate the festival. The movie is an amazing intense tale.

Bombay as we know is in the hands of underworld. One of the biggest ganglords is Joda Bhai.Joda Bhai runs a crime syndicate which has strong connections with police and politicians. His main man is Nahar Singh(Amrish Puri).Ishaan(Ajay Devgan) is Nahar's son who is also working in the syndicate. He alongwith Joda Bhai's grandson Sunny(Rahul Bose) represent the younger strata of crime whereas Nahar and Joda are the experienced administrators.Joda's syndicate include taking plots and construction work. This has made them a major land-shark in the crime city. The rival gang is that of Feroz Bhai whose set-up include giving refuge to a Pakistani agent. Both the gangs have an eye on the plot named-Amritkunj.An elderly man lives with his family there and he is not willing to sell his property. What follows is a chain of events where both the gangs try to capture Amritkunj.

On the other side Ishaan falls in love with Suman(Tabu) who is a budding poet and classical dancer.Suman hates violence and criminals.Ishaan is not able to tell Suman about the reality as he is scared that she might turn away from him.Meanwhile Sunny loses all patience and goes armed with his men-including Ishaan- to Amritkunj and murders the entire family after getting the required signature. However the young girl of the man survives and is able to see the face of Ishaan. She is paralysed and becomes the only witness in the case which is now handled by Inspector Khan(Govind Namdeo).Alongwith all this is the rising madness of Sunny. He goes on a rampage and kills Nahar as he feels that both Nahar and Ishaan have betrayed him.He is eventually killed by Ishaan after Ishaan goes through a fabulously shown confused state of mind.

The story of Thakshak is brilliant.Although the concept of land-shark was shown in Mahesh Bhatt's Kabzaa-1986 as well but in Thakshak it is shown in a really complex way.The police-crime-politics nexus is also shown brilliantly. The movie shows a complexity in almost every character and it is portrayed in a good way.Like all famous Nihalani movies-Ardh Satya,Aakrosh and Drohkaal,Thakshak has a strong undercurrent of violence. But the violence is shown in a chilling way and does not become gory and over-done.The cinematography, screenplay, editing, background score and setting is brilliant. The music by A.R.rahman is excellent although too many songs distueb the narrative at times.Rahman himself considers his score of Thakshak as one of his best.He feels that if the movie had done well the music would have done much better.Still the songs ''Khamosh Raat..'',''Boondon Se Baatein.'' and ''Mujhe Rang de'''' are still very popular on various radio channels.Tabu's classical dance and the brilliant poetry she reads in the title credits give the film an earthy touch to it.Govind Nihalini is brilliant as a director in the movie. He is succesful in conveying the complexity of characters and intensity of plot with ease through his direction. The scene where Rahul Bose shoots an old A.K.Hangal leaves u stunned and so does many sequences.

Ajay Devgan gives a brilliant performance as Ishan.Although the movie did not do wonders for him still he got acclaim for his portrayal of a man caught in a web of crime. It is totally different from his performance in Company-2002.Tabu as Suman is excellent. She gives new dimension to the role and proves that even heroines can make a solid impact in violent male oriented movies. The mature romantic scenes between the couple are very well executed and one cannot believe that this is the same pair which acted in potboilers liek Vjaypath and Haqeeqat.Amrish Puri is alsobrilliant.A regular of Nihalani Puri again proves his mettle as an actor. However the performance which haunts you the most is that of Rahul Bose. This was his debut in commercial Hindi movies and he did a brilliant work in it.The character itself was very different.Nihalani showed the power hungry-angst ridden-impulsive and slightly unbalanced rich youth of the country through Rahul Bose. His penchant for guns, his broken affair and his madness make the character one of the most menacing youth shown in Hindi cinema.Bose gives a terrific performance and his scenes with the deadly Devgan are the best scenes of the movie.A must watch fro crime saga lovers.

A crime story
Apr 17, 2003 05:29 PM 3983 Views

Govind Nihlani tells this crime-story with the help of his brilliant camerawork. Thakshak is a grim crime thriller where violence plays hard in the background of the screenplay. It focusses on the psychology of criminals which leads to terrorising acts.

The fim starts on the lands of a business empire which has a scary face of Mumbai underworld. Ishaan and Sunny are close friends. Sunny's grandfather has built a construction empire with assistance of Ishaan's father. In the name of this construction empire, a lot of blood of the innocents flows to maintain the profits, status and egos of it's beholders.

Sunny played by Rahul Bose as a person is a short tempered, self dominating sort of a guy.

Ishaan played by Ajay Devgun is completely opposite to that of Sunny. He is honest to Sunny and his family. He has a dislike towards his profession, but he can't help but walk on the path shown to him by his father.

Amrish Puri plays Ishaan's father who has vowed to give his whole family to the gory business. Ishaan walks this very path.

Suman played by Tabu is a character very gentle, but strong enough to see in the face of terror. Suman is the one who brings the power to dare n' face the truth in Ishaan's life.

Nethra Raghuraman plays Sunny's girlfriend, and a friend to Ishaan.

Govind Namdeo plays a cop who is on trail of a murder case.

The way these characters interract with each other in different circumstances forms Thakshak.

Thakshak is a look at the mafia world from within. Here the characters cannot be categorised in black or white. Each n' every character except that of Tabu have gray shades. The characterisation is very strong, showing the story's characters as humans and not heroes or villians. The movie moves forward with a steady pace. Each n' every scene carrying a lot of information for the proceedings of the movie. When the movie starts, I was totally confused as what the hell was happening onscreen. But as the movie proceeded, I could get with the scenes at the beginning of the film.

Some of the scenes which form the limbs of the movie have been listed below;

1. Ishaan's entry on a construction site where he is thretens a man to move out of Mumbai.

2. Sunny in a drunken state quotes Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru's speech after which he kills an old man (A. K. Hungal) for a petty reason.

3. The scene where Ishaan is involved with Sunny in killing of a family and the song 'Toofan ki raat' which follows.

4 Suman's interactions with Ishaan.

5 The scene where Ishaan tells his feeling of leaving the mafia world to Sunny.

6 The scene where Ishaan introduces Suman to Sunny.

7 Ishaan's confession to Suman.

8 Ishaan's torture by the police in the trail of the murder case.

9 The scene where Ishaan saves Sunny, even after having an opposite state of mind.

There are many more for which you have to watch this flick.

Govind Nihlani handles Thakshak effectively. But I do not understand why he went to comercialize the subject. Was it for the box office success. Still his direction is fabulous. The camera work is fantastic focussing on the expressions of each n' every character. Music by A. R. Rehemaan is brilliant. His scores match the mood of the project. Rang De is beautifully coreographed. Khamosh Raat goes deeply romantic. Boondon se Baatein leave the feet tapping. Jhumbalika although being a hit doesn't serve any purpose in the movie. Toofan Ki Raat leaves one spellbound with it's high-pitched haunting tune. Dholna is beautifully placed in the background of one of the moments of the movie.

Ajay Devgun plays Ishaan as if he himself was Ishaan. His dark mysterious yet innocent eyes play the whole Ishaan for him. Rahul Bose is brilliant as Sunny. He keeps the character which could have otherwise gone overboard in control. He shows the psyche of a self centered man effectively. Tabu looks gorgeous in the skin of a simply lovable character. Her way of showing the gentleness as well as the strength of an innocent being is praiseworthy. Nethra Raghuraman does not suit the role. She spoils the effect of the movie as she steps in to shake a leg in Jhumbalika.

Thakshak is a story told effectively with the help of strong human characters, but goes a lill' bit amiss in the effort of going commercial.
