A beautiful mistake
Nov 17, 2004 06:41 PM 3356 Views

Starring: Abhishek Bachchan, Hrishita Bhatt, Amrish Puri, Mohnish Behl, Ashish Vidyarthi, Tinu Anand, A.K. Hangal, Viju Khote, K.D. Chandran, Dara Singh, Daisy Irani, Navni Parihar, Anjan Shrivastav

Story : Social Entertainer

Director: Gurudev Bhalla

Producer: Jayantilal Gada

Music : Sajid-Wajid

Lyrics : Sameer

This story is about Rahul Khanna (Abhishek Bachchan) the only son of a wealthy couple. He is a spoilt brat who is careless and irresponsible.Rahul was eagerly awaiting his first trip alone to USA when tragedy struck. He once doesnt obey the traffic rules and is caught by a cop DCP Bhosle,(Om Puri) and given punishment by the judge in court. This unusual punishment idea is given by Neha Sengupta,(Hrishita Bhatt) a journalist.

The punishment is that, Rahul will have to spend one month in Aashiyana, an old age home. He has to obey the elders there and cannot run from there. If he does so, his punishment will be doubled. This punishment is given to him with a hope that he will obey others and will get well-behaved.

Almost all the old people at Aashiyana have been dumped by their children. But these oldpeople are shown making the best of their time together in Aashiyana. Prajapati (Amrish Puri) acts as the head of the home and makes every sort of decision on his own without consulting with other members. Though he looks authoritative by his appearance, he wears a soft heart inside him. Tinu Anand, A.K. Hangal, Viju Khote, K.D. Chandran, Dara Singh, Daisy Irani, Navni Parihar, Anjan Shrivastav, Helen are the other chief residents of the Aashiyaana and though some of them oppose Prajapati in his stance, still they fall to his decisions quickly.

Its time for Rahul to go and Neha goes along with him to write out the changes that will take place in Rahul's behaviour.Rahul shares a room with Prajapathi as no other resident accepts to share their room with him. In the beginning, there are small clashes between Rahul and Prajapati. They both hate each other and always keep fighting.

On the other hand, The Manager of Aashiyana, Saxena (Mohnish Behl) announces to the elders at Aashiyana that since the old age home has incurred a lot of debts, he has to unfortunately sell the home to a contractor , Arora( Ashish Vidhyarti). All the dreams and hopes of living in Aashiyana are shattered!

What happens next? Does Rahul go through a 'good human being' transition? Will the old age home be saved? Where will the old parents go? Will they be ready to leave their only house?

The story is innovative and gives a sentimental touch. It shows the Generation Gap and how the elders suffer without love and care. It shows how cruel and selfish today's younger generation has become.

Amrish Puri comes first for his tremendous impression throughout the movie. He has portrayed the expressions wonderfully. His expressions and dialogues steal the entire show.

For Abhishek, his role has been good but at that time his acting wasnt so good like now.

Hrishita Bhatt has also done a good performance. She is consistently a joy to watch, and while the remainder of the film is tedious and hackneyed, her presence gives Shararat a value it would not otherwise have.

Tinu Anand's amazing 'forgetfulness' is the asset for his talent. He is incisive, yet a great forgetter.

Helen is smart in her performance.

The rest of the cast has also done very well.

Overall a very good movie. Unfortunately it had been released late and that too along with Devdas. This blocked the movie from being watched and become a good hit.

So those of you, who havent yet seen the movie....go ahead...what are you waiting for?

Please do not forget to rate and pass comments on the review. It will help me to write better. Thank You

A big surprise

I watched shararat because there wasnt any other watchable movie on tv and boy was I surprised !!!!!

i never expected the movie to be as good as it was.

lets get to the story in short ..abhishek bachchan plays a spoilt brat who is sent to an old people's home to learn what life is about.

hrishita bhatt plays a journalist covering this story for her paper.

and a whole lot of veteran actors play the old people in the asharam who's kids have disowned them.

how abhishek fights , adjusts , falls in love with the old people and the journalist forms the major part of the movie. the 2nd plot is about the manager selling of the asharam to a builder and abhishek getting things rite with the help of his parents.

of the cast..the veterans like amrish puri,tinu anand,helen,shobha khote,viju khote n all r good.

but the surprise packet was abhishek. seriously I never thought this guy could come up with such a sincere performance. absolutely great job from him and remember he was pitted against veterans in his field.

hrishita was adequate. and the music had a couple of hummable numbers. direction is good and the story though not new has been handled differently .

overall a good movie experience.

only one thing rankled me.....how come all the old inmates of the asharam had been disowned by their kids ? do all the children of this generation behave like that ? I dont think so !!!`

Hats off to Shararat

Shararat is the story about Rahul (Abhishek Bachchan) the spoiled son of a big industrialist who often indulges himself in petty offences like rash driving, violating of traffic regulations, etc. Neha (Hrishitta Bhatt) is an upcoming journalist.

Once Rahul is caught for an offence, he tries to fool the inspector (Om Puri) telling him that his parents provides him with money required by him but does not love him which has resulted in his becoming a spoilt person. However on meeting his parents the inspector realises that Rahul has tried to fool him so he refuses to bail him out keeps him in the prison for a day and later on produces him in the court.

On producing him in the court the Judge based on the advice of Neha the journalist decides to send him to a old age house with an idea of reforming him. Rahul is asked to stay for one month at the old age house “Ashiyana”.

Ashiyana is a home for old aged persons which was originally constructed by one Late Shri. Pandit with the idea of helping out the old persons.

At Ashiyana he meets many elderly persons Amrish Puri, Viju Khote, Durga Khote, A K Hangal, Tinu Anand, Daisy Irani, Helen, etc. In most of the cases the siblings of these elderly persons have found their parents a burden and have left them at Ashiyana under the supervision of the Manager Saxena (Mohnish Behl).

Neha also accompanies Rahul and comes to stay at Ashiyana as she is interested to make a news article as to how Rahul gets reformed at Ashiyana.

Initially Rahul finds it difficult to adjust with them but as time passes he develops liking for them and even they start liking him. Once Ashiyana receives notice from the Manager asking them to vacate the premises within seven days. All the inmates are worried about their future.

Manager Saxena informs the inmates that since there was a huge amount of debt he had no other way out but to pledge Ashiyana to one Arora Builders (Ashish Vidyarthi). Rahul now comes to the rescue of the inmates and he is willing to pay the amount due and recover Ashiyana but now Saxena informs that now it is too late as he has already sold off the plot to the builder. When Saxena is questioned he says that Late Pandit in his will has given him all the rights hence no one can question him.

One of the inmates says that a he has a copy of the will of Late Pandit where it is clearly mentioned that the plot of Ashiyana can never be sold by anyone. However he is unable to trace out the will copy. Rahul with the help of his mother who is an advocate obtains a time of one week for submission of the original will.

However within this time frame they are unable to trace out the original will. Rahul takes Ashiyana inmates to one of his friends whom he had befriended during his brief stay in prison and that person agrees to make a duplicate document and forge the signature of Late Pandit. However the moment he forges the signature and hands over the document, Inspector comes there and he takes away the document.

Now the deadline given to the inmates is over and the builder comes over to demolish Ashiyana, the moment when Ashiyana is being demolished the inmate who had a copy of the document remembers where he has kept it, he traces it out and stops the demolition.

Thereafter all the inmates of Ashiyana stays there peacefully.

The moral conveyed is very simple “Old is Gold” the old member of a family is not to be considered as a liability instead they should be treated with love and care.

Inspite of making a good movie because of considerable delay in its release Shararat could not create any waves in Box Office. Secondly the date this movie was released was also responsible for its debacle. This movie was released on July 12, 2002 and its sole competitor was Devdas, because of which Shararat could not create any ripple in the Box Office and the many viewers lost an opportunity to view a good movie.

Performance wise Helen and Amrish Puri have stolen the show. Abhishek has tried his best in the role given to him.

Nothing great about the music of Sajid Wajid.

On the whole its an good entertainer.

A good example

For once I actually saw a hindi movie that surprised me, in a good way of course. I wasn't exactly expecting the best when I saw abhishek bachchan's name on the credits along with a battalion of very well known character actors and a new entrant Hrishita Bhatt. But 'Shararat' was a very pleasant experience that left me feeling nice and warm inside.

Abhishek plays Rahul, a spoilt, rich braggart who thinks no end of himself and prides himself on his reckless behaviour. Right at the beginning he gets into a tight spot where the only way out is punishment and what a sentence it is. He is banished to an old people's home where he is to assist the elderly residents for a whole month so he could learn some manners and etiquette from people who know it best. The story is primarily rahul's transformation from a reckless, ill-mannered youngster to a sensitive, compassionate person who realises that in life what you reap you shall always sow. Thats all you need to know about what the tale is all about because 'Shararat' is a movie that needs to be viewed to be appreciated.

Sure, it lacks the glitzy, glamourous, hi-tech effect of other movies that were released this year. But it makes up for it all with its simple, down to earth uniqueness.

I must say Abhishek Bachchan has proved that he is capable of acting in an intelligent film and carrying it well on his shoulders. Of course he couldn't have done it without the assistance of the ensemble cast of character actors like Amrish Puri, Helen,A.K Hangal, the Khote siblings Viju and Shobha, etc. Even Hrishita Bhatt, after her small yet significant role in 'Asoka' has delivered a good performance as the journalist who comes to report Rahul's progress and eventually falls in love with him.

The songs are passable, definitely not the film's strong point except maybe for 'Ek Ladki Mujhe'.

On the whole I found that this was a wonderful movie to view with the whole family because it was a story that touched your heart.I think it was a concept very few have dabbled with but a subject so relevant to this day and age.And Bollywood could do with movies that not just entertain in a wholesome way but also bring out a message to people who need it.

I give 'Shararat' a 8 out of ten in my rating books. What about you?

The movie is all about how a spoilt youngster changes into a good human... i've personally seen the movie and feel if children do not respect elder's or what so ever they must not be given a severe punishment but given the kind of punishment shown in the movie. many parents agree to this point. it's a wonderful movie altogether.i watched the movie because I have a cousin (no names please) who is similar to the character of abhishek in the movie and I have told my aunty to give him the same kind of treatment given to the hero & yes of course the movie is a must watch for the entire family.
