Mohabbat ka khooni tamasha! Thaayn, thaayn, thaayn
Nov 26, 2019 08:23 PM 357 Views

Dark comedy is not for everybody but black humor is gradually beginning to make inroads into Bollywood as the sensibilities are changing and the ghetto has been broken. Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro(1983), Sankat City(2009), Ishqiya(2010), 7 Khoon Maaf(2011) and Dedh Ishqiya(2014) experimented with dark humor that took on the establishment. While some attained the cult status and the rest failed to strike a chord with the audience because it is difficult to experience laughter and discomfort simultaneously. Debutant director Sai Kabir's Revolver Rani is one such dark B-grade concoction of politics, comedy and a bloodletting love story.

Set against the backdrop of Chambal, Kangana Ranaut is playing the titular role of Revolver Rani alias Alka Singh, whose father - who died early when she was just seven - never accepted her for being a girl child. She craved his love but was fascinated with his revolvers. She picked up the revolver because she saw her mother being raped in front of her. She grew to womanhood in the company of her sly & manipulative mama, Balram Singh(Piyush Mishra), just to be a terror in the area but now, he uses Alka for power. She shot her husband dead because he had an affair and supposedly thought of Alka as sterile. Alka belongs to a lower caste but she dreams of escaping to'Benice', orders clothes from Italy and primps like a diva in metallic conical bras. She is a dacoit-turned-politician and has just been ousted from her political position of power by the Rural Development Minister, Thakur Udaybhaan Singh(Zakir Hussain). With the help of her mama, she starts fighting for tribesmen/adivasis whom Udaybhaan, in the company of two half-witted brothers, has cheated out of their land. She falls head over heels for struggling Bollywood actor Rohan Kapoor(Vir Das) in the meanwhile but he starts using Alka as a ladder to climb up in Bollywood. Ultimately, he becomes her toy boy and when Alka decides to shut all her guns down because she's pregnant with Rohan's child, the opposition leader traps Rohan in order to destroy Alka completely. What follows is Alka's journey of deceit, betrayal & survival.

The story(Sai Kabir) is offbeat and a great satire of political love. This issue has never been raised before in Bollywood. Even though the premise of the flick is unbelievable and too wacky to be true, the plot redefines pulp fiction by fusing notoriety and crass in right dosage ala Quentin Tarantino's style of movies. Right from the avant-garde production design(Mayur Sharma) to accomplished cinematography(Suhas Gujarathi) capturing the hinterland with rigour to assorted background score uplifting the mood(Surender Sodhi), the detailing is precise and real attitude of goons and politicians are shown with utmost precision. Military insignia laden jackets paired with salwars, metallic bra and eyecatching sunglasses suit Kangana's demeanour outright. Kudos to costume designers(Ridhima Pandey & Gavin Miguel) for the quirky/unusual wardrobe! The dialogues(Sai Kabir) are rib-tickling with usage of broken English dialects only enhances the pleasure of watching a true-blue desi politics. The TV anchor in the film managed to evoke the maximum amount of mirth. The director nails in characterisation of the characters, which is sheer humourous. Sai Kabir has done a fantabulous job in his directorial debut by mixing love and violence in an unusual way and sticking to the reality of the land of rebels, politicians, bullets and blood where the people either live by the gun or die by the gun. The twists in the tale, the superlative acting & the hard-hitting climax pack a solid punch and are the highlights of the enterprise. Though aimed at the hoi polloi, the movie is not easy to digest because it needs the viewers' attention right from the very onset as the content is raw, real and riotous.

On the grey side, the film has no logic whatsoever. The slow & laborious runtime of 132 minutes with those thirteen outlandish songs(music: Sanjeev Srivastava) popping out of nowhere, make the viewers dog-tired. A dark comedy should be neatly peppered with pacy situations to keep the watchers hooked but the movie has got scenes so long drawn-out(editing: Aarti Bajaj) that the whole impact fizzles out by the end of it.

Kangana Ranaut is evidently the best thing in the film. She is on a nailing spree. One cannot imagine this role without Kangana. Portraying a crazy, vulnerable, aggressive, abusive and nymphomaniac dacoit with tanned tone and kohl eyes is no cakewalk but she slips into the skin of Alka with elan. A virtuoso act, indeed! Vir Das is confused throughout. He is wasted. Piyush Mishra is fantastic, as always. He is phenomenal especially in the second half. Zakir Hussain and Pankaj Saraswat are pitch-perfect as shrewd politicians cum goons. Deana Uppal is a femme fatale. Kumud Mishra, Nikunj Malik, Jami Jafry, Preeti Sood, Rahul Gandhi, Zeishan Quadri, Zafar Khan, Sanjay Singh and Abhijeet Shetty are consummately terrific in their respective roles.

On the whole, to endure Revolver Rani the viewers need to have a strong appetite as it is the most brazen dark humor to have churned out of Bollywood in recent times. The superlative performances - particularly Kangana Ranaut - along with plenty of good laughs and stirring effort of debutant director Sai Kabir make for a wild watch. Give this one a shot!

Worst film kangana did till now
Apr 06, 2017 06:58 PM 1317 Views

The plot was actually nothing out of the box infact not to be even fit for your eyes to take it for more than 5 minutes.

It revolved around a girld child who was born to rule a place to was told that she can never be pregnant and the movie revolves around the unnecessary violence without and reason and then comes vir das to take advantage to win a thought expressing competition who comes in a relation with with kangana. He plays a boy full of nothing but lust from inside who just slips to be physical with her and later when she comes out to be pregnant her uncle tells her to abort her the child when she comes to know that she was told the lie all the time about her reproduction health and then he is supported by her uncle to ditch her and finally kill her with the movie ending abruptly with a assumed dead kangana still alive.

performance of kangana is as usual best from her part but it was a worst shoes she was in with a raw desi india sound track and a average cinematograpghy.

Classy Acting Wasted Due To Loose Story

Kangna is fabulous. Movie is bogus. Story is loose. Direction is novice. Music fails to bind. Speed just drags

rest all is just patched.

You start to go with movie a startling acting from Kangna with some bogus dialogues from rogue actors just to crowd the screen. As the movie passes before your eyes you are left with just K holding up rest will kill you to your seat into a death of boredom.

REVOLVER RANI: This Maharani Is Here To Stay
May 04, 2014 11:36 PM 4628 Views

After Bullett Raja(2013), here comes Revolver Rani. Kangana Ranaut is riding high after the grand success of Queen and she rightly follows it up with RR. And it sure is a treat to watch her from demure to daring. Chambal, dacoits, revolvers and bullets go hand in hand. There are no friends except that one has to kill the enemies to survive.

And politicians make their presence felt. Alka Singh (Kangana Ranaut), a trigger-happy killer politico has breathed violence and doesn't fear to shoot and kill. Alka has lost elections in Gwalior to Tomar party. And the Tomars are baying for her blood. But before killing her, they would like to hurt her. And what better way to do that than to kidnap her actor fantasy of a boyfriend Rohan Mehra (Vir Das).

They kidnap Rohan in Mumbai and bring him to Gwalior to kill him. But can Alka let that happen? She comes blazing at the scene of action and takes charge. From a fearless politician to a coy lover, who would turn a meek woman to be with her man; Kangana infuse life in the role. She knows that from an uncouth, fire-brand gun-toting foul-mouthed witch she has to turn into a demure woman, who wants to attract her man. And she does it effortlessly. She only likes "phasion, gun and fun."

Alka loves her man and knows how to protect his life. The movie shows a role reversal, where woman protects her man. For she is deeply in love. So what if she is a politician! Before that and foremost, she is a woman. And love oozes out of her. The deadly Rani can make mincemeat out of her enemies, only to protect her love(r). This is all about guns, guts and glory. Kangana at her very best.

Revolver Rani Is No Queen...
Apr 27, 2014 07:46 AM 10557 Views

An actress being relegated to hero’s mere eye-candy is not uncommon in Bollywood even in today’s age. However, in 2014, it’s interesting to see that several significant films like Dedh Ishqiya, Hasee Toh Phasee, Highway, Gulaab Gang and Queen boasted of strong female characters that formed the backbone of the respective film’s plot.

Revolver Rani now gets added to this coveted list. The film was much awaited not only because of the quirky promos and characters but also because it’s a film starring Kangana Ranaut, whose popularity has escalated thanks to the super success of Queen. But alas, Revolver Rani is no Queen. It surely has its moments but the shaky editing and execution is one of its many blemishes.

The story of the movie: Alka Singh (Kangana Ranaut) is a dreaded gangster com politician in a small town in India. Her mentor is her maternal uncle Balli (Piyush Mehra) and her enemy is Udaybhan Singh (Zakir Hussain), candidate from rival party. Problem arises when Alka falls deeply in love with Rohan Mehra (Vir Das), a struggling actor who tries to use Alka for selfish motives. Rohan becomes Alka’s weakness and Udaybhan tries to take the situation’s advantage to defeat Alka.

Revolver Rani has a shaky beginning. The sequence of Udaybhan’s hencemen talking about Alka Singh goes on and on and one feels restless since the Revolver Rani is nowhere to be seen. Thankfully, the opening credits are damn interesting and catch attention. Alka’s entry scene is okay and the bedroom scenes of Alka and Rohan fail to make the desired impact due to the haphazard editing. Alka storming into Udaybhan’s rally should have been a power-packed scene but again, the impact is missing.

The reason why this majorly happens in most parts of the film is because the makers have attempted to be as realistic as possible in their approach. But few scenes defy reality, especially the action scenes. One doesn’t expect to see dozens of goons firing at the protagonist and the latter not getting hit by a single bullet in such a fare. Moreover, one can see reflection of shooting lights in Udaybhan’s sunglasses. These are minor goofs but it does make an impact.

Things begin to look bright 10-15 minutes before the intermission. Post-interval, the film goes on a solid high, in the Agra sequence. It is hilarious, novel, and quirky and is bound to bring the house down! And obviously, it’s the best part of the film! The sequences after this scene also makes for an interesting watch. But again, in the climax, the realism goes out of the window and the developments in the finale somehow don’t manage to pack a punch. However, the film ends on a surprising and rocking note.

As always, Kangana Ranaut is terrific in this author backed role. It is impressive to see how she manages to bring the evil as well as soft side of Alka with ease. It required conviction to pull of the role of Alka Singh and to make audience believe that she’s the one who can scare the hell out of anyone. And Kangana does it so well. Hats off!

Vir Das is a big surprise of the film. He proves very well that he can play a male lead with utmost perfection. The actor is known for his funny side but Revolver Rani allows him to prove that he can do much more than just tickle the audiences’ funny bone. Watch out for him in the Agra sequence…he is superb! Piyush Mishra delivers a terrific performance.

His character gets very significant in the second half and he ensures that he plays it well. Zakir Hussain is top-notch and same goes for the actors who play his henchmen. In fact, all scenes involving the trio are quite interesting. Zeishan Qadri(Pilot) plays a character that’s very similar to his character of Definite in Gangs Of Wasseypur Part II. He deserves much better roles! Nikunj Malik(Zahira) and the actor playing her mother do very well. Others are fine.

Sanjeev Srivastava’s music is very finely incorporated in the film. The title track is exhilarating and worth listening. Kaafi Nahin Chaand (sung by Asha Bhosle) is soulful. Pehle Lohe Ki Chingaari is powerful and Zardozi Lamhe is well used in a funny scene. Action goes over the top in few places. Costumes are quite quirky, especially the undergarments of Kangana.

Dialogues are sharp and even acidic at places. Sai Kabir’s story is brilliant and in a way one-of-its-kind. It needed to be directed well and that’s where Sai, also the first time director, falters. He should have stuck to realism from start to finish and should have ensured the narrative moves smoothly and sans any haphazard cuts. On the positive side, he shines in many scenes, especially in the Agra scene.

Also, the conflict in the second half is deftly executed. If only he had done such a fine job throughout the movie, Revolver Rani would have been a cult classic!

Few good scenes of the film:

1.The sting operation.

2.Rani comes to the rescue in the kidnapping drama.

3.The intermission point.

4.The Agra sequence.

5.Balli confronts Alka in a drunken state.

6.The final scene.

On the whole, Revolver Rani is an entertaining drama but the haphazard editing and direction in few scenes and filmy fight scenes in the otherwise realistic setting takes away the impact. On the positive side, Kangana, Vir and Piyush deliver brilliant performances and a sequence in the second half is quite novel and brings the house down.

Don’t have many expectations and definitely don't expect a Queen from this one and chances are that one might enjoy the fare!

My rating - 2.5/5!
