This is an unthinkable story. I can't even imagine that any person can be so cruel. But this is a real story. It teaches us about the thought process of a mentally ill

Kashyap's Knife Could be Sharper !
Aug 01, 2017 06:19 PM 1359 Views

For Raman Raghav 2.0, master director Anurag Kashyap has had to buckle down, tighten the shoestrings of his budget, and attempt a kick-back to what made his films tick. The box office disaster of his last year's'Mumbai Velvet', produced for more than Rs.100 crore, not only ruined his professional upswing, but also scuttled his plans to move to France. Raman Raghav 2.0 was made with Rs 3.5 crore, as if Kashyap is daring the very margins of mathematics itself to challenge him with a loss this time. The production cost, or paucity thereof, shows up clearly onscreen, but the overall result, sadly, does not.

Both for logistical and financial convenience, the opening lines inform us with blunt cheek that this is not the story of the dreaded real-life Raman Raghav - a serial killer who bludgeoned forty one people to death in the Mumbai of 1960s. Instead, cut to the present era where we are marooned in a shanty-town Mumbai - even the odd upmarket apartment looks to be in disrepair.

A wise-cracking, articulate man(essayed by Nawazuddin Siddiqui) who looks to be in his late thirties to early forties, starts wreaking his psychopathic streak of violently bloody homicides. The police don't take him seriously and he uses this negligence to further his rampage. Rather unaccountably, he soon takes a fancy to, and begins to spy on Raghavan - a young cocaine-snorting police inspector(played by Vicky Kaushal) who appears nominally competent but looks more likely to get himself killed rather than apprehend criminals.

It is useful to see how this picture falls short, by comparing it to the same director's film'Ugly' - a film of partially similar zeitgeist, that also features pervasive criminality and a plethora of flawed human beings.'Ugly' throbbed with scene after scene of hypnotic intensity, further enhanced by a variety of powerful performances. RR2.0 shows promise in the first half, but then suffers due to a shortage of memorably constructed scenes. The criminal here is interesting but not spell-binding, while the policeman is a one-dimensional example of the walking dead. Jay Oza's visuals are suitably grungy but do not match up to the starkly impressive canvases Andritsakis composed for Kashyap's'Ugly'. Ram Sampath's atypical background score is judiciously jazzy, but when it comes to being profoundly unsettling, it is not in the same league as McOmber's eerily minimalist score for the former film.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui is undoubtedly competent as the deranged killer Ramanna, but for all his witty remarks and calmly insane expositions, he comes across a garden-variety mad-man. Siddiqui's vaulting talent, this time, regrettably doesn't make him embody a truly spine-chilling killer.

Vicky Kaushal, as the coked-out cop, admirably executes Kashyap's instructions to lose more weight and drink minimal water so as to look dehydrated. Unfortunately, it appears he got too dehydrated to act effectively and his wooden performance significantly shortchanges the movie.

The film's assets are only a few. Ramanna's last meeting with his sister is the kind of weirdly orgiastic sequence that the director excels in. That protracted scene starts off with familial strife and then explodes into something else. The sister(Amruta Subhash) looks so much like a character from real-life, unlike Mumbai filmdom's usually hackneyed casting.

Kashyap returns with all his favourite totems - fractured couples, father-son discord, substance abuse, etcetera. There are unnecessary nods to other films - Ramanna's iron pipe which he drags along recalls the cattle gun in'No Country for Old Men', the emblazoned'Chapter One', 'Two' and so forth allude to Tarantino's style, and even the name'Raghav' recalls the same name and somewhat similar themes in'Aks'. But sustained emotional intensity, overall flamboyance and constant momentum which powered his best films are in short supply here. His sure does put a interesting spin at the end, but films are a lot more about the process than just the destination.

Kashyap remains as indulgent and defiant a film-maker as ever, again unmindful that there's an audience with expectations on the other side. That can sometimes be a good thing, but if your films begin to miss more often than they hit, then you become known as more mercurial than magnificent. The good folks in Cannes however chose to continue the faith they showed in his previous superior films, and included RR2.0 in their'Directors' Fortnight'. If his next film proves to be even more unfocused, then who knows, they might actually give him the Palme d'Or.

Bloody, Raw & Classic!

Kashyap had shaked me with his 2015 flick UGLY which was very dark and whose narration was fierceful. I never expected RR2.0 will surpass all the boundaries across! This is one of the most fierceful cinemas in my list. At times I felt that there's no point in anything in the film but as the film goes deep and deep it damages your brain and you can't even predict what might be the conclusion!

There are many instances of Neo-Noir as Kashyap loves to run with it. There is no point in watching this movie, but it's definitely a proud moment that we have a filmmaker who is bold enough to make such films. Nawaz Bhai is so ferrocious his face is flashing all around the walls of my room! Ram Sampath has equal credits go the success of the film as his Club-dub-house steps have initiated fantastic support to the gore. All I can say is that Kashyap is back and we expect more!

Raman raghav 2.0 is a superb movie. Which is based on notorious serial killer raman raghav who operated in Mumbai during the mid if 1960s. Raman used a regular steel rod. Anurag kashyap has written the story and screenplay of raaman raghac 2.0,this movie is about serial killer nawazzudin siddique, the movie has a fresh story. Nawazzudin delivers a flawless performance as the nutter serial killer. Mentally disturbing film
Jan 06, 2017 06:24 PM 5566 Views (via Android App)

Raman Raghav could have been a solid exploration of psychological intricacies but ends up being a shallow montage of clichés pepped up by pretentious classical beats and stylistic gimmicks of distortion sounds, fast cuts and post production gymnastics.

Anurag Kashyap has of course managed to better his performance from the dreadful Bombay Velvet but he has nothing to show here except his pale copying of Tarantino type, chapter-ed narrative and school level Freudian psychology. Mentally disturbing film

OMG what a performance of Nawazuddin Siddiqui
Nov 07, 2016 01:30 PM 5725 Views

This movie is very very good movie but very dark movie all khun kharaba and all that the story is good but the performance is dam great by Mr Nawazuddin Siddiqui and other actors and actress. I personal like Mr. Nawazuddin Siddiqui sir because his acting are top of the world and in this movie you can see real raman as a villain.

basically the story and the main character is inspired by the notorious serial killer RAMAN RAGHAV, who operated mumbai in the late 1960s, but the film is not about him. he thought the he is like raman raghav but only raman and he find the raghav Mr. Vicky Kaushal he is acp of in this film. and finaly he find is parter. the story is very good and we watch nawaz sir acting and great performance I love it.

Awesome actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui
Nov 07, 2016 03:38 AM 5780 Views

I love this actor and the The film has its quirks laced with the unmissable dark humour but the writing lacks depth. The characters are uni-dimensional but Kashyap keeps the narrative lucid. Raghav, a coke snorting, careless cop is blamed by his girlfriend for the three abortions she undergoes. He has his cruel daddy issues to blame for his own warped behaviour.

Nawaz wears his nonchalance in style and gives a pitch perfect performance. Vicky Kaushal is sincere and does his best to match Nawaz. Shobhita Dhulipala(Miss Earth India 2013) shows promise in her limited screen space.

Perfect Thriller !!
Nov 01, 2016 12:21 PM 5639 Views

A perfect crime thriller, a usual highly anticipated anurag's movie. The perfect narration of a real life incidents and the trade mark of anurag and nawazzuddin made me to watch the movie. Absolutely a trilling screenplay and the plot of the movie was nicely projected by the director. Nawazzuddin was as usual in his best mode of acting. End of the movie was unexpected made me thrilled. A multiple personality of a man and the mediums which made him to become a Psycho killer was narrated in realistic way, the best part was when nawaz compares himself with police officer and explains how they both are same despite of their professions.

Raman raghav oh my god what a movie a mad person who said in front of police that I am mudrer aresst me and then went to her sister home he portrait of the serial killer Ramanna and Raghav are also creatures bred and brought up in patriarchy, are victims of it(Raghav’s uneasy but submissive equation with his dad for instance) yet perpetuating its deep misogyny. No wonder women, however strong-willed, get the worst end of the stick, be it Ramanna’s victims or Raghav’s girls more than the story itself, it is the quirky telling that is the key. Structured around eight chapters, vividly shot in the slums, pulsating with raucous music, Raman Raghav 2.0 is a taut thriller, full of energy and brimming over with tension must watch:-)

One man killer

The brutal murders in Anurag Kashyap’s serial killer film Raman Raghav 2.0 happen off camera for the most part. Yet I found myself flinching and turning away each time the screen went black, or the distinct sound of a metal rod making contact with flesh filled the room.

Kashyap’s film is not an easy watch. Nevertheless, his exploration into the mind of a killer, who, by his own admission, kills for no reason other than the fact that he wants to, is deeply fascinating.

Raman Raghav was a serial killer who operated in Mumbai in the mid-1960s, and subsequently confessed to having murdered 41 people. But Kashyap’s film is not about him, we’re told right at the start. It focuses instead on a copycat modern-day killer, played by Nawazuddin Siddiqui, who holds up the notorious 60s psychopath as his inspiration, and feels a kinship to a coke-snorting police officer, Raghavan(Vicky Kaushal), whom he thinks of as no different from himself except that he kills from behind the privilege of a uniform.

In an interview he gave a few weeks ago, Kashyap said Raman Raghav 2.0 is the most romantic film he’s made. In a strange way, he’s right. Nawazuddin’s character, who goes by the name Raman, becomes instantly captivated by Raghavan, from the moment he first sees him, killing a stranger in cold blood and for no apparent reason. Raman has found a kindred spirit in the twisted cop, and from hereon he kills to feel close to Raghavan. Can there be a more pure and selfless love?

The film then is about the cat and mouse chase between cop and criminal, although like in Sriram Raghavan’s Badlapur, Kashyap too subverts the hero/villain template until the line begins to blur. The cop character is anything but a straight arrow, unable to so much as function without a hit of cocaine, and routinely abusive to his live-in girlfriend Simmi(a terrific Sobhita Dhulipala).

Siddiqiui is appropriately creepy as Raman, a long scar running down his forehead, an unmistakable glint in his eyes, and almost always dragging a long car jack behind him. In one of the film’s best scenes, you watch transfixed as he coolly cooks chicken curry in a home that he has forced himself into, while the family, trapped and terrified, await their fate.

It’s a testament to the actor’s abundant talent that you root for Raman when he’s being pursued by cops in a slum. Or you find his simplicity endearing when he can’t seem to make even a basic calculation. He reveals childlike pride while casually confessing his crimes to complete strangers. His delicious turn as the possibly demented killer is easily the biggest strength of the film.

Kaushal, meanwhile, never quite matches up to his co-star’s brilliance, squarely failing to turn Raghavan into an equally compelling protagonist. He has presence, but his performance as the morally bankrupt cop feels hollow and lacking in real feeling.

The film itself benefits from a propulsive music score(by Ram Sampat), some unexpected moments of humor, and an energy and pace that seldom dips. Kashyap is in good form, but ultimately Raman Raghav 2.0 doesn’t bring anything blazingly new or original to the serial killer genre.

I’m going with three out of five. It’s consistently engaging, but doesn’t get under your skin like some of Kashyap’s other films, particularly Black Friday, Gangs of Wasseypur, and the criminally overlooked Ugly.

Raman Raghav movie is a nice concept movie. If you love a serial killing movie then this movie is for you.Awesome acting of nawazudin siddiqi act as a serial killer who kills and accept the crime to cop but initially cop take him as normal but later they found the real fact and start search for him.Nawazuddin performed his part very well by attempting to find his team mate raghav to save himself and fulfill his madness he killed more than 11 people in movie and this new comer guy Vicky kaushal done pretty well in this movie he is drug addict and a police office.the cop is drug edict and story run around sort chapter of different life of cop and his affair with girls who finally die in the end .and in last cop become killer.movie has little romance and bold language at different stage and the whole movie bind viewer till the end.soft music is on right interval make movie r, if you are interested to see various ways how to kill some one than this one is for you.nteresting.overall is you are thinking to see a good suspense the go and watch it.

We deserve this kind of Cinema in India but unfortunately only few filmmakers dare to make movies like this, they are succeeding in terms of appreciation if not money.

Talking about Raman Raghav 2.0, the twist that it takes in the end just stuns you. It shows the brilliance of Nawazzudin Siddique as an actor and amazing writing. Though the other actor could have done a better job but still the movie is worth a watch. Initially people thought that its about the serial killer of the 70s, but guess what?

Go watch it!
