Incomplete melodrama

The movie paathshaala is movie that focushed on the status of a school which is highly affected by exessive monetization of school.

The story of this movie is based around a schoole situated in town of mumbai named Saraswati Vidya Mandir. This school is known for its good quality of study. But management of that school want more profit so they ordered principal Aditya sahay ( Nana Patekar) to increase inocme at any cost. Then commercialization of school begens. Discrimination among students took place t name of fee. Many products and services are become compulsary to buy to all students.

This phenomenon is protested by all teaching staff lead to a strike of students and staff against management. So that is all about the story of this movie.

Beside this main story some other story also creayed by writer like what happens to that girl student having crush on teacher ( shahid kapoor) that not lead to any result till last of movie.

This movie have a good actor like Shahid and actress like Ayesha Takiya but there is no loving intimate relationship shown between them. Such incomplete stories leads this move toward boringness.

Music of this movie is good. Some song like 'aye khuda' really a heart touching one.

Some movies like taare jameen par had done better than paathshaala. Team of this movie do lot of effort to promote this movie but a weak story make this movie a big flop on box office.

How should a Modern School Be ??
Jul 04, 2010 05:05 PM 4310 Views

The movie revolves around a school Sarswati Vidya Mandir. The school which ignored the way the other schools were earning undue profits putting more weight-age on School Up-gradation than the Education itself.

The story takes us to the school campus where few casts like the school principal Aditya Sahay (Nana Patekar)and English teacher Rahul(Shahid Kapoor),Food and Nutrition teacher Sandhya(Ayesha Takia) and few more teachers are there.

The principal is seen as thinking to take some Extraordinary steps as no other way left to him, in the starting scene. In the principal- teacher meeting it was decided to increase the salary and perks of the teachers. For that they were told through the E mails by the principal that they would be taking classes for almost double the present strength and few more terms and conditions. All teachers decided to say NO to principal.

The pressure from the Trust side was increasing day by day.The principal thought a way...

He intensionally kept himself away for 4 days.Through another staff(Ashutosh) he implemented many changes and all felt the pinch of it.

The Canteen staff was told to sell only the Combo packs with necessary cold drinks. This was opposed by Sandhya as the cold drink was not good for children. In the music class Guitar was introduced to them who were willing to pay heavier price than the market. This was opposed by the Music teacher. In the sports class similar type of problem was created.

When the principal came back, it was told that the principal had concurrence for all that was happening. That shocked the teachers and they at once told that they were going to resign together. But the principal was a step ahead. He had made alternate list of new teachers.

Finally in the interest of all students, the teachers returned to work. The pricipal told,``When I wanted your co-operation you didn`t extend it.Now you need my co-operation?``

Now the principal became more aggressive. He invited Event management teams to the schools who by all means started all prevailing marketing gimmicks. This put the student under huge pressure.

The parents were at the receiving ends too, as the fees was increased too much. They all got united and the matter got escalated. With media hype, the school was now at the back foot as they got assembled in front of the school. The head of the trust was now in trouble. He told the principal to dilute the problem somehow. But the principal shown him the way to...

Nana appeared in front of the Media and announced his resignation. In the addressing to all he gave full details of his decision which he never wanted at all.He told,``First time I worked using my brain than my heart,Teaching is one of the novel est profession. But nowadays when all doors to the career closes people choose the teaching profession. Now more than imparting true education, school infrastructure development is important.``

The movie has exposed the evils of media too.In one instance one news reporter was saying,``if you say yes to this Question type `Y` if not then type `N` and send to....``Also the reality of Television Reality shows was exposed.

At last when the principal was departing, the emotional students request him to reconsider his decision.Nana agreed to it and movie ends with teacher-principal meeting.

The movie makes you emotional on some occasions. It also exposes the rots in present schooling system and the Media evils.

Pathetic Paathshaala
Apr 19, 2010 12:32 AM 5165 Views

When Director Milind Ukey, Paathshaala mein apna naam opening credits mein likhte hai, he also mentions his film school FTII along with his name. Indian film history mein iss se bada FTII ka apmaan nahi hua hai.

After seeing the dismal Paathshaala, koi bhi akalmand aadmi uss film school mein jaane ki nahi sochega, jaha se iss film ke director pass huey hai. Thankfully for FTII, students like Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Sanjay Bhansali and Raj Kumar Hirani are doing it proud with their wonderful movies.

Anyway, shuruvaat se shuru karein tou, Paathshaala was probably meant to be ek strict principal aur unke naye young teacher ki story. The similarities with Adi Chopra’s Mohabbatein would have been enormous, so the story then becomes a school story.

Iss school mein kuch darjan-ek students aur staff hai. Ek typical parsi, ek darrpok bengali, ek ex army sports coach, ek school girl jo apne English sir se infatuated hai, ek student couple, jo thankfully sirf ek doosre ko door door se smile dete hai - aur kuch aisi hi completely ordinary aur forgettable characters - iss school ka part hai.

Because of some aarthik reasons, principal ko school ki policies change karni padti hai - jiss se students ko kaafi takleef sehen karni padti hai, aur teachers bhi sharminda hote hai. So they protest and call a strike. But everything gets sorted by the end.

When described in 2 paras, the story sounds ok - but actually this story is put together with random scenes, listless songs, and boring montages. Cast mein bahut saare behtareen actors hai, par except for Sourabh Shukla, everybody else is colossally wasted.

The biggest dissapointments are Nana Patekar and Shahid Kapoor. No they are not bad, but why would they want to be a part of such an amateur project. Even Ayesha Takia is completely wasted.

Anyone who has ever seen even one movie scene being shot, is aware of the tremendous hard work involved. On another level a movie is a creative product which is almost like the production team’s baby. But, an audience spends its hard earned money - and they should be given their money’s worth.

We are not very fond of criticising a movie - but Paathshaala definitely deserves it. The writing is bad, the direction is lazy, the music is forgettable and the acting is uneven. Let us explain this with a couple of examples …

Ayesha Takia asks Shahid Kapoor to teach music, but for some reasons he refuses. The next day however, Shahid does teach music to the child students - by singing a song about heart break - when Ayesha Takia sees no no no hears this this she bursts into a big smile, which grows bigger and bigger and then bubbles over as laughter. Really? No suggestion of romance yet, no proof that Shahid is going to be a great music teacher - just because he does her a favour, she looses her marbles. Really?

Example 2 - The strict and ethical Nana Patekar ko school ke trustees majboor kar rahe hai ke woh school ko commercially chalaye, so he decides to resign - ek dus minute lambe bhaashan ke baad. Woh apna desk pack up karte hai and is about to leave jad school ke 20-25 bachche unhe gher lete hai, ek flowers ka bouquet dete hai and ask him not to leave. 10 seconds later - he agrees to stay back. Really? So what was the movie all about then!!!

Yeh ek completely bakwaas film hai - aap iss se door hi rahe. For those 3-4 scenes where a completely restrained Nana Patekar gives us an acting masterclass - we give Paathshaala 1

Schools are meant to upgrade and inculcate the next generation with thoughts and ideas that would make our world a better place to live in, but unfortunately schools have became victims of modernization and that is exactly the punch line of Paathshala. Directed by Milind Ukey, the movie has a decent star cast and a decent script that will keep you entertained for a little more than two hours. Paathshaala talks about one of the noblest profession in the world teaching and all the problems that kids are going through in today's world. Before you move ahead with this review let me make a point that Paathshala is not Taare Zameen Par Part 2.

The plot is as simple as you can imagine where Rahul Udyawar(Shahid Kapoor) joins Saraswati Vidya Mandir High School as a English teacher. Aditya Sahay(Nana Patekar) is the principal of the school who has been looking after the institution for more than three decades because he feels that teaching is one of the rare professions where have an opportunity to shape the future of the world. Soon, Rahul is unified with other school teachers which consists of Anjali(Ayesha Takia) who works as a nutritionist, Sushant Singh works as a physical trainer for the kids and Kurush Deboo works as a history teacher. However, soon the school management comes up with new rules and regulations for kids and teachers and the plot takes a new twist which reveals to us how school management works these days.

Coming to the technical aspects of the movie, Paathshala is a good attempt by people who are fairly new to the Bollywood industry. Of course, you cannot compare Paathshala with Taare Zameen Par because the story, the issues and the presentation style is completely different, but you can say that Paathshala is a little lighter version of Taare Zameen Par because its a bit Bollywood style. The cinematography by Basha Lal is good. Music by Hanif Sheikh is not a chartbuster, but still there are decent songs like Ae Khuda, Khushnuma and Bekaraar. On a performance level, Shahid does justice to his role and so does Ayesha. Nana Patekar is good as always and delivers every speech with a lot of dedication. All kids in the movie are very good at their skills and they actually are the real heroes of the film.

However, the script and story by Ahmad Khan is not very tight and that would upset the audience. Many would enter the movie halls thinking that they would get something similar to TZP and that too would disappointing. However, if you love issue-based movies than you will enjoy watching Paathshala that highlights how commercialization is slowly creeping into education industry causing various issues to parents, teachers and kids. Paathshala surely is a good movie that you can attend this weekend with your family.

3/10 - Well intentioned, pathetic treatment
Apr 17, 2010 12:16 AM 3904 Views

3/10 – Paathshaala: Well intention-ed but pathetic treatment.

Paathshaala deals with commercialization of schools. Paathshaala is about Sarasvati Vidhya Mandir (SVM) – a well disciplined boarding school in Mumbai under the strict vigil of the principal, Nana Patekar. During his leave Mr.Sharma (Saurabh Shukla, who aptly calls himself the management) starts making changes in every aspect of the school’s function to ensure that the school makes profits.

The students and teachers are adversely affected. The staff discovers that the principal has orchestrated the changes. So why does the honest principal do that? What prompts these changes? What effect does it have on the children and what happens to the school finally? These are the questions the film answers.

Paathshaal is a well intention film, pathetically treated. The reason for the changes in the school, are fairly obvious but revealed at the climax. The extension of commercialization in the school beginning from canteen to reality shows seems disjoint and inconsistent. The resolutions even more distantly disjoint. From script to screenplay, characters and their motivations all are inconsistent. When one resists changes(the teachers in this case) one would explode at the slightest provocation but these caring teachers suddenly turn docile and patiently accept gross mistreatment of students - absolutely unbelievable and inconsistent.

Saurabh Shukla and Shushant Singh are good, the rest of the teachers/students don’t have much to do. Nana Patekar as the principal, Shahid Kapoor and Ayesha Takia as teachers are good but the script lets them down.

Story and screenplay by Ahmed Khan, dialogues and music by Hanif Shaikh, Editing by Ashraf Makrani and the cinematography is ordinary. Milind Ukrey’s direction is below par.

The film definitely has picked an important subject that plagues modern India. While it’s important to raise time relevant subjects, it is equally important to ask the right questions and supremely important to treat it well. Paathshaala is consistently inconsistent in asking the right questions and its treatment of the subject. For a few heartwarming scenes and Nana Patekar’s acting it’s a 3/10.

Paathshala- Modern day education and our story

Paathshala- Modern day education and our story

Before 3 months ago, chetan Bhagat “Five point someone” Remade as “3 idiots” was one of the all-time super hit movie of Bollywood. “3 idiots” had described the college life especially engineering field and the management system.

The current movie “paathshala” is a similar type of movie focused on the education but here the story goes on the school life.

story of a movie-

Aditya sahay (Nana Patekar) as a principal of saraswati Vidya Mandir is feeling unsleeping night because of his school not having a healthy ranking in the ”market of education”. He himself is a very dedicative towards education but because of unavailability of modern facilities and techniques to the student, he feels something improvement is necessary to be alive in the competitive race of education. He brings out the ne w ideas among the teachers.

Rahul (shahid kapoor) as a new teacher in college is with a modern views about the education system in school but in the same time he is one with the kind nature and a very friendly in nature with the student. Anjali (Ayesha Takia) is a nutrition specialist and Music teacher. Similarly, all other teachers are also trying to do best as a teacher when suddenly a incident changes the story of a movie..

school management are themselves now focused on publicity and profit earning for the college. Increment of the school fee was not only the issue, but punishing or discriminating students in terms of payment of fees, unbalanced behavior to every student, these are indigestible by school teachers, still they are unspeakable.

For the publicity of school in Media for earning the revenues, realities show are organized which looks like unnecessary pressure for students. These are stealing the daily enjoyable life among students and teachers too. Moreover, failure of students in successful participation is another headache.

But it takes no more time for Rahul (shahid kapoor) to find out the reason behind principal’s decision for all those happening in school. Then all students go for the strike for a day which brings saraswati Vidya Mandir in everywhere News. Lastly, with the revealed of the real reason, story happily ends.

To know what the reason was, I suggest you watch the movie.

Story in glance–

Story here is a based on our social life of education. But it has lots of emotional moments added here. Story sometime goes funny and a small twist is present. Over all, worth to watch, but for those who might be expecting a lot from sahid kapoor, I suggest don’t go with the huge expectation

.

Music-

The best part of the movie is its Music. It has a very good music. Its background Music and song gives better edge. But increment on number of songs with more variation would have been much better.

Act-

Nana Patekar is completely fit as principal there and has done a very good job. shahid kapoor is once again in his best while Ayesha takia has very few moments to prove herself in this movie. And moreover this is not a love story movie; there is no so much chemistry between them

story in my view.

Being me myself studied from a well reputed Private High-school in secondary level, the memory of my school life was getting flashed back in my mind. Unnecessary torture to students because of unpaid school fees, Discrimination on different areas according to fees they paid and many such things are shown in the movie which I had myself seen in my school among my friends. so this movie touched my heart and what I felt was that the story has shown a negative point in school life which has to be improved As soon as possible.

Movie of 2 hours would have been much better if some more incidents would have been added

.

Conclusion-
Commercialization in education has not only brought Indian education downwards, but also it has been affecting the normal life of lower class family. All Government school are not in their best in their education and so to get a standard education till secondary level, fees along with the donation to be paid are the tradition of Indian Educational society. Refuge of admission in the failure of submission of satisfactory Donation is what we can see today in our society and undoubtedly we can term it as “indirect way of corrupting education”

Not to blame only school administration, it’s also out fault to go for only those school which are well reputed and have lots of extra curriculum activities. This is something we have to improve in our society
.
My rating- 3.5/5

Recommendation- Yes

Paathshaala is Pathbreaking
Apr 16, 2010 05:02 PM 3177 Views

The crass commercialization of education is beautifully portrayed in Paathshaala. The locale is Saraswathi Vidya Mandir, which is headed by upright principal Aditya Sahay ( Nana Patekar ) who has served with distinction for the past 3 decades. During his tenure the school has produced many a distinguished alumni who are CEO, industrialist, businessmen, politicians etc. He is known for his discipline and empathy to students. The scene where a student pisses in his pants brings out peel of laughter and realty of the campus discipline. Over a period of time the school goes down in ranking in the rat race.

The trustees are now desperate to encash the brand equity of the school. The invite Aditya Sahay and give him an ultimatum that he should produce substantial profits within a short span of time. Otherwise the management would prefer upgradation of the school to provide 5 star type of facility and realize better fees. A comprehensive plan is submitted to the principal. He has to implement it or get out of the way.

Rahul Prakash Udayavar ( Shahid Kapoor ) joins the school as an English teacher with music as a hobby. The principal requests him to teach music too, but he refuses since he is not perfect in the field. Anjali Mathur ( Ayesha Takia ) plays a multiple role of dietitian ( nutrition specialist ) warden and music teacher. She convinces Rahul to teach music to students.

When you want to bring major change it is better to dispatch key personnel on leave or holiday, which is indication that days are numbered for the principal. This is universal policy I suppose in the corporate world too, it is implemented. In comes the villainous character of Sharma who believes in carrying out the dictates of the trustee to the core. He begins a series of cost escalation measures on various food items, music classes, sports kit, etc which are all aimed at generating more revenue for the school. Including the school fees is hiked substantially. When the parents protest he quotes the supreme court verdict that private schools have the discretion of charging whatever fees they decided. He starts insulting the school teachers and strictly ad vices them to follow the guidelines of the trustee.

The count down for Nana has begun to exit from the school, the management employ professional mavericks to train students for various competition and extra curricular activities to hype the schools achievement. Will the trustees be successful in their effort. Will the teachers co operate with the management ? A dilemma of sorts plays out in the mind of Anjali whether to quit and go abroad instead of rotting in India, What is the motivation for Rahul to stay back in SVM ? The climax of the movie is rivetting. All the doubts will be answered in the movie.

During my days schools and colleges were not commercial at all the central school fees was Rs 7 pm, Degree was Rs 15 pm and MBA was Rs 25 pm. The question of paying single np donation was not there, nor tuition was seen as a good practice. So education was less of a burden for parents and children. The kids were free to play the game of their choice, there was no compulsion. Nor extra curricular activity such as drama or elocution or quiz was compulsory. We used to once a way participate just for the fun of it not for any reward or recognition.

Well for all parents and teacher this film is an eye opener. Teachers should be passionate to mould the students as good citizens of the future. I hope this movie receives tax free status so that it can be watched for the sheer pleasure of understanding the old school of thought.

How is the education institution going to fulfill the rising demands of the teachers salary and perks. Well the key to this will be govt. subsidy and donation by the alumni who pass out from the school. And of course the current trend of parent taking loan in the name of the ward to complete education and later to be repaid by the ward is the way to go. The mellowed down role of Nana Patekar is seen to believed in Paathshala.

Paathshala ...it is...but then what ??!!
Apr 16, 2010 04:57 PM 5313 Views

Darn my enthusiasm for FDFS……it has bombed so many a times but yet I am never discouraged. Paathshala just adds on to the list of such disastrous attempts. For preliminaries I must congratulate the promotional and PR agency for the movie which really did a job of great packaging; because that’s about it. Paathshala is just great packaging and good promotion, but absolutely hollow from insides.

As an intention, it was admirable to raise an issue over the educational structure of the society, but then Taare Zameen Par happened long ago. And trying to raise an issue of similar manner or league requires more than good intentions. Foremostly it requires a plot or a script( read plausible), which is absolutely missing in Paathshala. At a point you feel that every scene is a result of a “bulb which suddenly blinked”.

The structure of the haphazard story is based on a school SVM (Sarswati Vidya Mandir), situated in suburbs of Mumbai. The school is following the traditional guidelines and fails to compete in comparison to the modern schools. The row of events is like this : Principal Aditya Sahay (Nana Patekar )'s tension, discussion, enters savior appearing oh-so-known dimpled guy Rahul Prakash Udyawar (Shahid Kapoor). Rest what prevails is an utter confusion, you actually get caught in a web of babes(Ayesha Takia), bimbettes ( Sushmita Mukerjee and etcs.) and some other handful who insert a dialogue here and there. You do get enlightened on facts like “chips aur coke se bachchon ki health kharaab hoti hai”, or that female teachers’ dressing sense and makeup can pass on for occupants of red light areas.

Too many points but sadly the movie is only one; so they just try to cram all issues together like, teenage student having crush on male teacher, guy with a birth mark spoiling his face getting no attention from pals, peer pressure, rivalry and phew!!

Songs and music is hummable and “Aye Khuda” being one of them, rest Paathshala itself needs an institution to teach the basics so required for a movie!!
