Bollywood has presented many immensely popular comedies like Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi, Golmaal, Chupke Chupke, Padosan, Lage Raho Munna Bhai, 3 Idiots etc. which are much talked about movies. However today I am reviewing an underrated bollywood movie which is definitely a flawless and highly admirable comedy but quite unjustifiably neither got big commercial success nor much discussed. It's Naram Garam (1981) whose director is none else than the director of classic comedies like Golmaal and Chupke Chupke, i.e., Hrishikesh Mukherjee.

Naram Garam (soft hot) is the story of a rich widower, Bhavani Shankar (Utpal Dutt) and his unmarried employee, Ram Prasad (Amol Palekar). Bhavani Shankar is a miser but at the same time highly superstitious. He lives with his younger brother, Kali Shankar (Shatrughan Sinha) and his motherless daughter, Sumi (Kiran Vairale). Ram Prasad loves Kusum (Swaroop Sampat), the daughter of a poor old man, Vishnu Prasad (A.K. Hangal) whose son is Ram Prasad's friend and in his bid to earn, remains out of home for most of the time, doing village theatre (moving from village to village). When Vishnu Prasad and Kusum become homeless, Ram Prasad temporarily shifts them to the ancestral house of Bhavani Shankar which has been won recently in a much-prolonged court case and now under his possession for getting it renovated. However when this fact is known to the corrupt and lustful manager of Bhavani Shankar (Suresh Chatval), he pressurizes Vishnu Prasad to marry Kusum to her. How Ram Prasad tackles this situation and how the twists and turns keep on coming in the story, finally leading to Ram Prasad's marrying Kusum, forms the remaining part of the story which is full of laughs and laughs only. However in between the laughs, there are sentimental and moving scenes too and an undercurrent of emotion is continuously there in the narrative.

Naram Garam provides laughs from the very first frame to the very last frame (when the words - THE END appear on the screen). However despite being a comedy, it can be categorized as a very good satire also, ridiculing the superstitious Indians. It hits hard the swindling astrologers too, found in every nook and corner of our country. Besides, it portrays quite realistically that when a helpless man has a young girl in his family (sister or daughter), every unscrupulous person eyes her in return for some favour done to them.

The movie has many emotional twists too and the emotional bonds between human-beings have been depicted in such an impressive manner that it moves the audience deep within. It has been done through relations among the characters of the people in the theatre world (Neelu Phule, Padma Chavan and the actor playing Kusum's brother) as well as through the two pairs of widower father and motherless daughter (Utpal Dutt-Kiran Vairale and A.K. Hangal-Swaroop Sampat). It is a healthy, no-nonsense, natural comedy in which laughs amalgamate with tears. The movie is so interesting and rib-tickling that it cannot be left in-between even for a minute. Besides, each character is able to maintain his / her identity and leave a mark in the movie. The writers (Shanu Banerjee-D.N. Mukherjee-Manoje Basu) alongwith the director, Hrishi Da deserve full marks for their work.

The performances are all highly admirable. Utpal Dutt is all pervasive in the movie as the superstitious employer of Amol Palekar and creates an amazing on-screen chemistry with him. This role of a submissive but witty employee is tailor-made for Amol Palekar. Miss India of 1979, Swaroop Sampat debuted with this movie (later on she acted in a very popular comedy T.V. serial - Ye Jo Hai Zindagi and now she is the wife of actor Paresh Rawal). Acting wise she is ok but her voice sucks. Quite surprisingly, Shatrughan Sinha has delivered a great comic performance in the movie as the unmarried younger brother of Utpal Dutt. Kiran Vairale as the motherless daughter of Utpal Dutt has given an emotional performance on one hand but on the other she has created laughs too by teasing her unmarried uncle, Shatrughan in the song - Ek Baat Suni Hai Chachaji Batlaane Wali Hai. Among others, the actor playing Kusum's brother deserves a special mention alongwith Padma Chavan and Neelu Phule.

R.D. Burman has given good music in the movie and the beautiful lyrics have been written by Gulzar. I personally like the emotional song picturized on Kiran Vairale - Mere Chehre Mein Chhupa Hai Meri Maa Ka Chehra (Asha) very much. Comedy song - Ek Baat Suni Hai Chachaji Batlaane Wali Hai (Sushma Shreshth and Shatrughan Sinha) is definitely a treat to listen and to watch. Other songs are also quite good to listen. One trivia about the melodious romantic song - Hamen Raaston Ki Zaroorat Nahin Hai (Asha) - is that it did not get much popular and after 3-4 years, R.D. Burman used exactly the same tune for the song - Saagar Kinare Dil Ye Pukare (Saagar-1985) which became (and still is) immensely popular.

Technically the movie is perfect. The length is also ok considering the fact that it does not contain a single boring moment.

It is indeed very hard to find any deficiency in this movie. It is near perfect. A healthy comedy. A meaningful and thought-provoking comedy with a good mix of emotions. Considering its merits, it's definitely underrated. It has immense repeat value and will make you laugh every time you watch it. I recommend it wholeheartedly to all the movie buffs. Watch again ! Laugh again !

Naram Garam (1981) - Movie Review

Starring:

Amol Palekar

Utpal Dutt

A.K. Hangal

Swaroop Sampat

& ... Shatrughan Sinha!

Guest Appearances by: Om Prakash, Dina Pathak, and Javed Khan...

Yet another film by Hrishikesh Mukherjee and a great team of Amol Palekar Ji and the Late Great Utpal Dutt Ji...

This film had a different style to it, a style of simplicity, in which many adores...

We first start out seeing a small village, quiet and peaceful. Amol is introduced as, you never believe it... Ram Prasad. He has come to visit his old hometown, in which he had grew up in. His family moved to the city, and he has come to the village to see his Master Ji, played by A.K. Hangal. His Master is in trouble... His house is mortgaged, his wife died of sickness, has no money, his own son is worthless and most important of all, he is looking for a suitable boy for his daughter, Kusum, played by a great underrated actress, Swaroop Sampat, [You know the woman who played wife of Satish Shah in a comedy program called 'Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi'].

Ram Prasad, is an lawyer for a character named Bhavani Shanker Bajpai. Who is a stubborn, rich, old man, who is obsessed with priests, and who is an elder brother of Babua, played by Shatrughan. And just guess who Bhavani is? Yes you are right, Utpal Dutt!. Thora Golmaal? Maybe...

The thing is, Bhavani has been fighting a case over a house in which his forefathers have been fighting about for the last 5 decades I think. Bhavani, still wants and and will get it! Ram Prasad, ''ek sidha sadha, gareeb aadmi'' only gets R140 a month from Bhavani. Bhavani's wife has died when his daughter was very young. I forget the daughter's name, but she is 16 years old, and Bhavani is waiting for her to get married. Bhavani's mother in law, played by Dina has been taking care of her ever since she was born, and Bhavani hasn't been keeping up with his daughter, since he is a busy man and all day he spends time with priests.

As you can see, Bhavani is a very superstitious man and he will live his life the way the priests tell him to. Bhavani, is also a cheap person, and poor Ram Prasad, when he does a good job there is only an R5 increasment to his salary a month... :( Bhavani finally wins the house thanks to Ram Prasad, yet Master Ji and his daughter were kicked out of their house because they have not payed the mortgage... (Don't worry it's not the same house...) Even though Master Ji has a son, he is an actor and hopes to be a star... Currently he is a stage actor and only gets about less than a hundred rupees a month. He tries every way to pay some money for his family...:( Quite depressing...

The thing is Master Ji and Kusum barges in Bhavani's house in which the one he has been fighting for a while! And Masterji and Kusum wanted a place to stay... Ram Prasad tries everything to please all his fellows...

Ram Prasad is in love with Kusum, even Master Ji wants his daughter to marry him. But Ram Prasad refuses since he is poor and he does not call himself a man, since he can't afford anything.

There is a lot of drama than you may have expect in this film. I expected a laughing parade in this one just like from Golmaal. But it was an different movie, yet it was still good because it focuses on the village and the simple people.

Funny thing is, whenever a man meets Kusum, he falls in love with her! First it was Ganjanan Babu, a manager of the house in which Bhavani won, then Babua, and then Bhavani Shanker! Kusum gets the proposal from each of the men, but says no, since she loves Ram Prasad.

This film, was more of a drama than a comedy. The second half was the best part of the film! In the second half, we see more comedy because of Utpal Dutt and Amol coming together on screen.

Great Scenes:

  • A dialogue between Sinha and Javed Khan, commenting about women... Hilarious!

  • When Kusum is worried about marrying Babua, she tells Ram Prasad that she knows on her wedding night, Babua will hold her hand and say ''Hey, you jerk, I Love You!'' [Since Babua swears so much, lol]

  • When Bhavani is talking to Kusum about getting married, he calls her, ''Kusum Beti''! [Because of the age difference - The funniest scene!]

Trivia:

Since the music is directed by R.D. Burman, there is a song called ''Humai Rastai'', it was a female song sung by Asha Bhosle. Picturized on Swaroop and Amol. If you listen carefully, the tune is ''Saagar Kinare!!!'' which the song released in 1985 from the film Saagar... Don't worry it's the same director... What's bothering me, R.D. Burman perhaps couldn't come up with a song for Saagar, and since Naram Garam didn't go well, he used it again, and it became a hit!... Weird isn't it?

Acting Analysis: [Warning, it will be very short!]

Amol Palekar: He was good at usual, he always chooses simple roles... His character is the same as in Golmaal.

Utpal Dutt: ''Accha Hai! Accha Hai!'' Lol... I love the way he says that! I think he was great, he always bring the shine in the films. You should see the expressions on his face when Kusum bring Narial Ki Ladoo to him... Ha Ha Ha!

Swaroop Sampat: I think she was very good for her first film! She must have been 18 or 19 or so. She played a simple girl role, yet she was clever at the same time and knows how to take care of herself.

Shatrughan Sinha: Even though he kept swearing throughout the whole movie, he was funny when he gets angry, and then falls in love with Kusum... He was not that annoying in this film as he always is...

Others: They were good also, but they always have had small roles.

It's a good film, trust me, you won't regret it. If you are a fan of the director and the actors from Golmaal, then go see it, and the second half is the best.

A really good song in this film is when Kusum is singing while Bhavani tries to get his house back... I don't know what it is called, but Asha has sung well in it.
