Here is a quick-recipe to make someone an Amitabh-Bachchan fan in their childhood. Get the vcd/dvd of Mr. Natwarlal. Jump to the song where Amitabh plays/sings/dances with the kids in style, the long-legged super-star with his typical attire. He uses a stick as a Gun (like a kid), makes faces like the kids & demonstrates why he is the BEST actor when it comes to the scenes with kids.
Checkout the starting 5 minutes of Akayla (throughly gross movie mind you), he comes across a kid in the Airplane where a bomb is about to explode...the way he talks to the kid & the kind of expressions he gives. No doubt people with the Aquarian-ascendant or Aquarian sun sign (Feb 14th to March 13th) have a chance to be genius! Adding to that when you have moon-sign Libra with 'Swati' nakshatra, then your chances in any sort of art increase 100 fold!
The kids are left with no choice but to be fans of this supremo for the rest of their lives! :) But do not show them the promotion of ''Navaratan-Tel'' (The pathetic display for money by Amitabh, every 2nd promotion now a days is from Amitabh!)
THE PLOT
Back to this movie. There is nothing new in the plot at all. Natwarlal is a much younger brother of a imaandar inspector (Ajit). Ajit's wife thinks of him as her son. Due to some problems Ajit runs into troubles with the mumbai don ''V for Vikram'' (Amjad Khan). Amjad Khan tries to kill his family but ends up killing Ajit's unborn child. HIs wife sustains injuries & can't become a mother again! She accepts the reality saying Natwar is her son anyways. Natwar grows older & becomes a typical honest-poor lover-thief who steels/blackmails money only from the rich who have something or other stuck in the dirt! :) Ajit is obviously not happy.
One thing & another Natwar finds him in a village in teh name of Avataar Singh to protect villagers from a tiger (used by Amjad to kidnap villagers & use them as slaves in his mine in search of diamonds very close to border).
Natwar protects villagers, captures tiger, rescues people from Natwar's mine & developes relations with Rekha the cute goan-wali & all ends well.
The screen-play is the best part of the movie. Most of the plot & somewhat-boring details are covered in a 'story' that Natwar tell his son & the movie also comes as a part of story-telling. Many things are coevered with mere dialogs & in Amitabh Bachchan's Golder voice to boot. In the initial part the use of 'Tabla' (Indian Instrument) is used VERY effectively in the background music. The movie has a typical language that has been maintained throughout.
ACTING
Amitabh's sense of humor, his timing in dialogs, his spectacular performance in the songs, specially 'Mere Pasi aawo' & 'Pardesiya': One of the most evergreen songs from the 'Angry young man'. Bachchan becomes larger than life let alone the movie in a matter of 5 minutes after the movie starts. His voice has relatively de-graded over the years (still very good) but this movie is the benchmark wrt use of his voice. Without any big dialogs, emotional scenes this movie presents quintessential Bachchan 'of that times'.
The kind of impact 'Bachchan' word had in the masses all over India (villages/towns/urbasn areas/rich subarbs) has NEVER been duplicated & was NEVER seen before. His acceptance was universal & impact un-quantifiable. Even Dilip Kumar who is equally great an actor didn't enjoy such a clout in masses at any point of time in his life.
Ajit & Amitabh's humorous exchanges are a treat to the senses. Ajit shows elder brother's mild-frustration with younger brother perfectly. Special mention deserves their scene in the police-station. (Ajit: Ab tum jail dekhoge Amitabh: Inspector sab feelhal to aap khwab dekh rahe hain!) Ajit's competition I think brings out the best in Dilip Kumar in Naya Daur & Natwarlal/Janjeer or Amitabh. Also, as a side note: I think Amitabh has never looked better as he does in this movie.
Rekha is perfect in what she is supposed to do. A little dumb, chulbuli Goan-Ki chhokari in short a stereotype but she puts some soul with her presence in Pardesia.
Amjad Khan is a grand actor & he again proves it in this movie. He doesn't get as good as a role in say Mukaddar Ka Sikandar or the inspector in Qurbani let alone Sholay but leaves his impression on the movie as usual.
THE MUSIC
It is Amitabh show. Mere Paas Awo is as you already know my favorite & 'Pardesiya' is well, a very well known for Amitabh's graceful steps after Kishore comes in full-swing with Logo ko kehene do, kehete hi rehene do, such zhoot hum q sabako bataayen..main bhi masti main tu bhi hain masti main aa is khushi main hum nache gaayen.... Unchi unchi baato se kisi ka pet bharat nahi is just a filler sort of song & Rafi is wasted in it. Rekha shows her 'Jalwa' in 'Tauba Tauba kya hoga hona hain jo, ho jaane do...aanewala ayega aanewala, jayega jaanewala to jaane do'. The song where villagers pray for help is quiet well & I can't remember it right now! :)...I think it is 'Kayamat hain, Kayamat hain'?
I still enjoy this movie just as much as I used to as a kid. I feel like a 7 year old while watching this movie. BACHCHAN IS GREAT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
CONCLUSION
Enjoy this movie with your family or with friends. You will understand how difficult it is to not get impressed by Amitabh in this movie. Let me know if you also feel like a kid as I do while watching this movie by the 6' 3'' superstar!! Just don't compare it to other greats like Trishul, Janjeer, Deewar, Shalay with this movie & you will be fine! :)
I specially love the song with the kids & specially these lines: Khuda ki kasam maja aa gaya Muzhe maar kar Besharam Kha Gaya...; KHA GAYA, Lekin Aap to Jinda hain...; ARE Ye jina bhi koi jina hain Lallu, Aaan ???

- Thank You! We appreciate your effort.
