It wasnt the best of movies, it wasnt the worst of movies. It had a certain appeal that came from being a legendary love story. Kissa Laila Majnu : Laila and Qais are young lovers, known to each other from childhood. They have a unique bonding, if Laila is hurt Qais bleeds, and vice versa. However, thanks to Laila's tyrannical father, they are forced to seperate. Qais cant bear this and turns into a majnoon.
Ahhhh.. which woman wouldnt like a deewana like that !
Kehna ki ik deewana teri yaad me aahen bharta hai,
likh ke tera naam zameen par usko sajde karta hai.
So the young girl that was Ava in 1976 sighed deeply as she watched the dashing Rishi Kapoor chase the beautiful Ranjeeta around, courting her with abandon. He buys a pair of lovely silver pajeb set with precious stones, climbs into her room as she sleeps (defying death at the hands of the kadak chowkidar) and puts one pajeb on her ankle. "I will be back tomorrow to give you your other pajeb" he murmurs before he leaves. The next night just as he is done with tying the second pajeb on her other ankle, Laila sits up and hands him the first Pajeb, 'Roz ek pajeb le jao, ke pehna jao, silsila jaari rahega'
OOOOhhhh !
Is reshmi pajeb ki jhankar ke sadke
jisne ye pehnai hai us dildar ke sadke
The lovers move from stealthy rendevous to confrontation as ZALIM ZAMANA keeps a hawk eye on the young people and does not allow them any dalliance. SIGH ! So like my cousin who kept a watchful eye on my movements and was quick to rebuke me if he saw me 'straying'.
Qais is a steadfast lover and without fearing death faces the girls father. Laila has to run out on the streets and hug her Qais while he is being pelted with stones:
Husn hazir hai mohabbat ki sazaa paane ko, Koi Pathar se na maare mere diwane ko
Some wiseguys even cracked (pather se na maare to kis se mare) - Shut up you stonehearted fellows.
Alas, IRL there was no such brave person willing to be stoned for me. But the girl on screen was loved till death. She was forcibly married off to some Amir but refused to connsumate the marriage, languished till she heard the cry of Qais who was now a Majnun and runs to him. They died picturesquely in the desert, he unkempt and in a chak-gireban chola, she all done up in a lovely dress (she is a bride after all).
Ahh, wring out a hanky and go home cursing your fate.
You were never as beautiful as Laila, thats why you never had any Qais turn into a Majnu for you - wretched Ava.

- Thank You! We appreciate your effort.
