Housefull Movie Reviews

Housefull is rollercoaster comedy
Apr 30, 2010 06:54 PM 2117 Views

Hats off to Sajid Khan for pulling off a superb slapstick comedy in Housefull. He is like a magician who puts his wand to good use with a simple storyline and weaves a potboiler in terms of rib tickling comedy sequence one after another. This movie opened to 40% occupancy in Bangalore which is disappointing when people were expecting a super duper hit. But a good movie works with word of mouth publicity better, and I am sure it will pick up houseful noticeboard outside the theatre pretty soon over the weekend.

The storyline is spread across Macau, U.K and Italy. Arush ( Akshay Kumar ) is deemed to be most unluckiest person and is employed in an casino, where the his employer uses him to ensure that his customer loose their winning streak. His curse is supposed to break only when he meets a girl of lucky charm and his spell of bad luck is supposed to vanish. He goes with a ring and proposes to his girl friend Pooja ( Malliaka Arora, but he is dejected because she rejects him outright since he has wrought enough bad luck. Her brother Major Krishna Rao ( Arjun Rao ) beats him to pulp and warns him not to come any where near her. So his panauti ( unlucky ) spell continues to haunt him. He decides to take a break and join his friend BOB ( Rithesh Deshmukh ) in London.

Arush lands in Bob's house to give him a surprise, but least does he know that he is no more a bachelor married to Hetal ( Lara Dutta ) From here the story takes a leap into rib tickling comedy sequence one after the other. Hetal suggests it will good idea if Arush gets really married to her bosses daughter who is traditional and well bought up. Kishore Samtani ( Randhir Kapoor ) is the owner of a plush pub with a disco floor where Hetal is working as a waitress and Bob as bartender. How they manage to convince the boss to agree to his daughter Devika's ( Jiah Khan ) Marriage to Arush too is a funny sequence.

How Sandy ( Deepika Padukone ) comes into the life of Arush ? Does Batuk Patel ( Bomman Irani ) accept his daughter's marriage to Bob. How Chunkey Pandy ( aakri pasta character ) uses his tongue twisting dialouges to fool the couple have to been seen and enjoyed on the big screen.

The big banner Eros movie from the pair of Sajid Nadiadwala and Sajid Khan is definitely meant for relaxation, one need not tax their brain. The lovely locale of Italy is well picturised in the song sequence. The rendition song Apni to aise taisi, na koi aage, na koi peecha is brilliantly choregraphed by Sajid's sister Farah Khan. Overall the movie has to be watched for its humourous content. The climax of the movie is heart rending when the ice is broken ? Don t ask me how....simple go and enjoy the Houseful comedy.

Note ; Lawaris remix song is mired in controversy over copyright. The song might be deleted so watch it before the court order is implemented.

Its your bad luck if you see this movie

Akshay is described as the worlds  unluckiest man in this movie but I guess its also scrubbing off to his real life after some disasters like CC2C, 8*10 Tasveer, Kambaqt ishq Akshay needs a hit real badly and his hopes are tied on this movie. But sadly this movie has nothing new to offer the second half is very very similar to ALL THE BEST which was far better. It gives you very little to laugh most of the movie is very predictable except for Lara no other actress has anything else to do.

Reitish is passable n I am still wondering how Arjun Rampal won a national award. Sorry I cannot write anything about the story of the movie because there isn't any. The best performance in the movie comes from the tiger n the monkey n they have more expressions then half the actors in the movie and they are the reason this movie gets two stars.

Avoid it.

~~THIS IS MY 250TH REVIEW!!~~

Sajid Khan does it again! His debut directorial venture, Heyy Babyy, keeping aside all its flaws, was still a brilliant entertainer. And now, Sajid’s second offing, Housefull, too succeeds in giving the viewers the much needed entertainment! The film is silly and illogical at places but then who cares as long as it tickles our funny bones and leaves a smile on our faces? Get ready to commence your movie watching season with this hilarious flick!

The story of the movie: Aarush (Akshay Kumar) is the unluckiest guy of the universe! Wherever he goes, bad luck follows and it affects people around as well. Thus, when Aarush goes to stay at his friend Bob’s (Riteish Deshmukh) house, he and his wife Hetal (Lara Dutta) get jinxed too. He realizes that Devika (Jiah Khan), daughter of the wealthy man Kishore Samtani (Randhir Kapoor) can be his true love and hopefully will bring luck to him. He gets married to her but falls in love with Sandy (Deepika Padukone)! To add to the chaos, Sandy’s bro Major Krishna Rao aka Anna (Arjun Rampal) and Hetal’s dad Batuk Patel (Boman Irani) enter the scene. Aarush, who hates to lie, has to create mountains of lies so that everything can go on smoothly.

Housefull jumps from level to level in the first half. It begins wonderfully (Akshay’s entry is just awesome!) but then falls in some of the later scenes. But then the film picks up dramatically as soon as the action shifts to Italy. The entire Italy sequence was wonderfully written and even better executed. The twist in Jiah Khan-Akshay’s track surfaces unexpectedly and works well. The Akki-Deepika romance and the misunderstandings that crop up were damn impressive. And how can I forget, Chunkey Pandey entertains like hell during this entire sequence! More about it later!

The intermission point was gripping and you expect fireworks in the second hour. Thankfully, all expectations are fulfilled when the film turns into a howlarious ride in the 2nd half. There are such funny and creatively thought scenes in this hour that it literally brings the house down! Man, I was laughing so much after sooo many days!

The film has some loose ends but they are so nicely compensated by the director that frankly you won’t complain. The lie-detector sequence was technically totally wrong. But it is so nicely executed that the scene turns out to be one of the best! Also, Akshay’s decision to suddenly reveal the truth seemed a little forced. But the scene that follows (laughing gas sequence) is so brilliant (and funnnny) that again there would be no reason to grieve!

Talking about performances, everyone does one of the best jobs of their respective careers! Akshay Kumar plays the part of the loser perfectly! I marvel at this actor-he has worked in so many comic capers and yet, in each of his film, he comes up with a performance that is unique and different from the rest. In Housefull too, he does a brilliant act and succeeds in entertaining to the core! Great going Akki!

Riteish Deshmukh wasn’t at his best but still registers a strong impact. He does a fabulous job in the beginning scenes where he gets maximum footage. Deepika Padukone like everytime looks lovely and gives a topnotch performance. Here’s an actor who never disappoints! Lara Dutta contributes very well to the goings-on. She deserves to be seen in more films! Arjun Rampal was outstanding! One of the chief reasons why I was excited for Housefull was because of him! I have loved him since his early days and I was looking forward to watch him do a comic act. Thankfully, he doesn’t disappoint and does a fabulous job (who says he can’t act?)! And we’ll get to see him once again in power-packed role in Raajneeti just a month later! Keep rocking dude!

Illogical Yet Hilarious

The makers tried to play safe by not keeping the preview of HOUSEFULL for the critics, at least people who blindly trust these critics will at least run to the theater to watch the film. Either to appreciate or to run down, but at least a few extra tickets would be sold, which goes in favour of the film as far as the monetary aspects are concerned.

Sajid Khan is one person whom I don't like at all for the simple reason that he laughs at almost everyone. But with this film he has created a soft corner for himself in my heart as he has shown some promise in film making. His imagination is erratic at times but confirms his growth as a film maker.

HOUSEFULL narrates the story of Akshay Kumar, who is nothing but a loser. Bad luck follows him in anything & everything that he does or where ever he goes. Check out the introduction part of Akshay Kumar when he enters the casino & everybody starts loosing as the song HE IS A LOSER plays at the background.

Ditched by Mallaika Arora (looked horrible in the first scene with Akshay Kumar), he leaves for London to stay with his friend Ritesh Deshmukh, who is married to Lara Dutta. Gets married to Jia Khan who elopes with her boyfriend on the very first night. Attempted suicide but saved by Deepika Padukone, with whom he later falls in love & wants to get married. The only trouble is that she is the sister of Mallaika Arora & Arjun Rampal.

Lara Dutta has not met her father since 2 years as she married without his permission & now Boman Irani is coming to London to meet her.

Due to circumstances Akshay is thought to be Lara's husband. Deepika is thought to be the ayyah of Ritesh & Lara's child. Ritesh is thought to be Akshay Kumar's cook.

The final nail in the coffin is that Arjun Rampal also visiting London to take the award & approve Akshay for the marriage.

This follows a sequence of scenes that does sound illogical at times but succeeds in creating laughter. But once again the climax is a bit of a let down, why didn't they think of a better climax? All the hard work done in the first 2 hours 15 minutes looks spoiled to some extent with the 15 minutes climax.

Cinematography is beautiful. The cameraman has captured Italy so wonderfully that you feel like going there. Songs sound good on the screen as the music directors has created foot tapping music. The songs between Jia & Akshay & Apni to jaise taise are the show stealer.

Chunky Pandey is just ok. Randhir Kapoor was passable in a small role. Jia Khan confirms that she is here to reveal everything that she possess & its evident in her bikini scenes.

Arjun Rampal's role is small when compared to other male stars but he does a good job & looks very handsome. He has a great screen presence. Wish he gets better & lengthy roles in future.

Deepika Padukone was not bad & yes she too has few fixed expressions that she uses in every film. Time to grow & learn lady.

Lara Dutta's timing in comedy has improved & her chemistry with Ritesh deshmukh works big time.

Ritesh Deshmukh is natural. Excellent performance from him yet again. Good work Ritesh.

Boman Irani is hilarious, whether his mother is beating him, or he sees Akshay & ritesh coming out of same room, or sleep walking, he is good in everything.

Akshay Kumar is the life & soul of HOUSEFULL. He lived the role of Arush - the loser, to perfection. Watch the film to know the talent that this man possess. There are scenes when he is scared or looks worried but even that brings smile on your face. Watch him when he makes the entry with innocent look on his face as everything changes in the casino - WOW. 10 on 10.

Last but not the least Sajid Khan has done a good job behind the camera & will definitely taste success once again with this film.

It's a stress buster. Watch it if you want to laugh a lot without thinking about the logic.

Bad Omen! Do you believe in it?

Aarush (Akshay Kumar), the main character of Housefull is known for his bad luck. His hope is that the day he finds his real love the bad luck will turn good. Houseful is Aarush's bad omen adventures which turn to be a Garam Masala swapping partner episode. (With a house full of misrepresentations, swapping partners and complexitites)

The movie is a mindless light entertainer throughout. It is very much entertaining in the first half. Second half too started well but the fun faded as it approached the finale. There are two plots in the movie which somehow joined together. The film fail to capitalise on the comedy created in the first 2 hours and the climax was a disaster. Despite this the movie will give what it has promised, never ending fun.

Akshay Kumar proved again that he can handle this kind of comedy roles easily. What is noticeable is an Akshay giving sufficient space to his fellow actors/actresses. Deepika Padukone didn't have much to do in the film but she just fit the role offered her. (The romance angle is less focused.) Ritesh Deshmukh - Lara Dutta formed a good fun pair and the chemistry works. In fact Lara Dutta got more screen space than Deepika in the film. Jiah Khan (sexy), Arjun Rampal (good), Boman Irani (funny as usual), Chunky Pandey (Hilariously jokinge...) & Randhir Kapoor (good) made their presence felt.

Music of the film is average, fast & peppy. Lyrics follow the latest bollywood trend, i.e. Hinglish. (Pity but that is the order of the day. It is a symbol of a changing India.) Choreography is more skinny and colourful (reddish) and attractive but lack any creativity.

Editing is ok. Cinematography is good (some scenes in the beginning look very pale on screen with visible distractions but it is there only in few scenes).

Overall, the movie is a fun ride which will bring a lot of laughter in theaters. It fail to capitalise on the comedy base and there are lot of areas where it could have improved. The movie is recommended for all those who love to throw themselves out in laughter.

My rating: 3.5 stars
