Mirza Sheikh ( Amitabh Bachchan) is an 80 year OLD, MONK looking man, settled in a MANSION HOUSE by marrying to ROYAL STAG, Begum Fathima aka Fatto, who is 15 years elder to him, assuming himself to be from ARISTOCRAT family. But for his Begum, he is nothing but an opportunistic greedy husband. Husband waiting for his wife’s death to own the mansion and to kick out the tenants, who are paying very less rent, which is the only source of income for him, besides selling every valuable pieces from this ANTIQUITY.
Baankey Rastogi ( Ayusshman Khurrana) , is one of the tenants who has a BIG family with a SMALL income from a Flour Mill to MANAGE, having a Girl Friend who hails from a MIDDLE Class Family and ready for MARRIAGE. His KICK on the TOILET WALL, KICKSTARTS the story and screen Play. Baankey takes the side of politically driven Archeological Officer Gyanesh Shukla ( Vijay Raaz) to get a PUCCA HOUSE while Mirza approaches a Lawyer Christopher ( Brijendra Karla) to own the 100 years old KACHCHA HOUSE. With the deteriorating health of his wife, Mirza gets into KABHI KHUSHI Mood. But the BEGUM had other Plans to put her husband in KABHI GHAM mood.
There is a popular moral story of two CATS and a MONKEY, where the cats are fighting over a piece of cake and the monkey comes in between, offering to settle the matter by distributing it equally. However, while attempting to prepare equal share, it eats up the excess cake on each side and finally finish of the entire cake, leaving the two cats amused in disbelief. Gulabo- Sitabo is in similar line where the CAT FIGHT between Landlord ( ?) and Tenant, end up with both losing everything as the Property owner listens to her MAN KI BAAT.
The movie focus on the Value of Money which changes from people to people as per situations. In the end it diverts to the value of relationships too. Mirza Stumbles with shock each time he hears the value of the Rent that he could get, the value of commission he could earn but, his whole life runs with petty cash. It will be audience turn to stumble and laugh when they see the chair sold by Mirza for 250 gets into an Antic shop with a price tag of 1.85 Lakhs. There are lot of such subtle approaches in screen play which brings smile, even without any dialogue.
Amitabh Bachchan shrinks his Body and voice to suit the character of someone who pokes his NOSE on everything. Ayushman Khurrana is little off color both as an actor and the character. Vijay Raaz and Brijendra Kala are fluent in their execution. However, the show stealer is Srishti Shrivatsav, who has done very GOOD job as GUDDO.
The movie lacks pace at certain points. Songs are blended with the scenes and doesn’t seem like an obstruction. Background music helps to uplift the humor aspect. Its authentic look and no nonsense approach makes this Shoojith Sircar’s creation, watchable.
