Darwaza Bandh Rakho Reviews

An edge of the seat COMEDY!!!
Aug 08, 2006 02:13 PM3732 Views

Just like the previous year,2006 is also the year of comedies.Comedy films are the flavour of the season and “Darwaza Bandh Rakho” also features in the list of comedy films this year.

“Darwaza Bandh Rakho” ,presented by Adlabs and produced by Ram Gopal Varma, is directed by J.D Chekravarthy, who previously featured in Ram Gopal Varma`s hit film,”Satya” and also directed one of the episodes of RGV`s ‘Factory`s’ last film,”Darna Zaroori Hai”.After the disastrous comedy film by RGV`s factory,”Mr.Ya Miss”,the factory is back with “Darwaza Bandh Rakho”which stars Aftab Shivdasani, Chunky Pandey, Isha Sharvani, Manisha Koirala, Ishrat Ali, Smita Jayakar, Snehal Dabhi, Zakir Hussain, Divya Dutta and Gulshan Grover, with many other character actors. Fortunately, “Darwaza Bandh Rakho” is better than all the recent films that have been churned out by Ram Gopal Varma`s film factory.

“Darwaza Bandh Rakho” tells the story of one Gujarati family, headed by Shah (Ishrat Ali) who lives with his wife (Smita Jayakar), his strict mother-in-law, his son, his fashionable daughter who is always worried about her looks and a maid, Chameli (Divya Dutta). This ‘Shah’ family was once one of the richest family in town, but due to poor management of their money, they all became bankrupt. One night, when their doorbell rings and Shah opens the door, 4 kidnappers along with a victim enter into their house and house arrest the Shah family. The team of these 4 kidnappers consists of:

  1. Ajay (Aftab Shivdasani), who was once upon a time a waiter and now dreams to be the owner of a restaurant.

  2. Raghu (Chunky Pandey), who was once a driver but was thrown out of the job because he had his eyes on his master`s wife.

  3. Abbas (Zakir Hussain), who used to sell black tickets outside cinema halls but was forced to leave this job,as films started flopping.

  4. Goga (Snehal Dhabi) ,a ‘paan’seller.

In order to pursue their dreams they had to kidnap Isha (Isha Sharvani),the daughter of a very rich businessman (Gulshan Grover).

The 4 kidnappers, in order to hide themselves, get into the house of the Shah family. After about every five minutes the doorbell starts ringing and once someone gets into the house, he cannot go outside and is taken as a hostage so that no one can tell the police about this kidnapping case. By the end, there are as many as 35 people who are taken as hostages which includes people such as a pizza delivery boy, a saleswoman Julie (Manisha Koirala) , a money lender,a doctor and many more.

One undeniable plus point of “Darwaza Bandh Rakho” is its originality. The concept of the film is good and the best thing is that it has not been copied from a Hollywood film. It`s quite rare to see such original films like this one. However, the film could have been more funny than how it has shaped up to be. There are many scenes which succeed in making the viewers laugh and in which Chekravarthy, as a director also succeeds but some of the scenes start dragging and stop looking funny after a while, such as the scene near the climax where Mr.Shah starts doing karate. Some of the scenes which manage to raise a few laughs are:

-Mr. Shah`s one liners (Incoming free…..outgoing cut), thanks to Ishrat Ali`s performance and Snehal Dabhi`s dialogues.

-When the kidnappers call Isha`s father and her father tells the kidnappers to kill her.

-When the doctor comes to treat the money lender, who gets a heart attack.

The heroes of the film are its cinematography and its background music by Amar Mohile. The cinematography in the scenes whenever the doorbell rings, is really good, because the way the door is shot in those scenes looks very mysterious, which goes down very well with the mood of the film. Secondly, the background music also goes very well with the mood of the film. The doorbell ring is very mysterious and funny.

Although there are many actors and character actors in this film but those who completely stand out are Ishrat Ali as Mr.Shah and Isha Sharvani as the happy-go-lucky victim. Ishrat Ali`s face expressions are excellent in each and every scene, especially whenever someone enters into the house or whenever Mr.Shah starts getting depressed. Isha Sharvani`s comic timing is also very good. She is especially very funny in the scene where she reacts to the news of her kidnap. She seems a lot more confident this time than she was in her previous film “Kisna”.

Original..but not rip-roaring funny!
Aug 06, 2006 06:13 PM2269 Views

There are such rare glimpses of originality in Hindi cinema that it hurts me to see them not being realized to their full potential. Some comedies that have had a genuinely original story and have been dealt with amazingly deft direction are Hera Pheri and Munnabhai MBBS. But sadly, there are few movies made today that can even compare to them. And anyone mentioning Phir Hera Pheri or Chup Chup Ke (incidentally, two of the highest grossers this year) is seriously demented. I can only hope that Lage Raho Munnabhai comes somewhere close.

Anyways, back to Darwaza Band Rakho.

The story/plotline has seriously good potential. That alone deserves a two star rating.

Aftab and his gang of cronies kidnap Isha Sharwani. To hide her they take residence in a down-on-its-luck gujju family’s house. What follows is a range of people knocking on their door which includes a salesgirl (Manisha Koirala in a cameo), a pizza delivery boy and even a vet wherein ‘the incoming is free but the outgoing is cut’. Eventually there are some 20 other people kidnapped along with the main girl. However, one of the cronies decides to take a bigger share and mayhem ensues.

The movie has its moments. Certain scenes between the family and the interaction between the hostages and the gang are quite funny. But it is not a laugh-a-minute riot.

Thankfully, the movie doesn’t have any songs but racy background music. The camerawork is shoddy in parts. The acting can’t really be commented on as there are too many actors and eventually all of them have small roles. One thing, however, that I really liked was its publicity design. The way the whole advertising was done actually made me go watch the movie. Good photography and some thought had actually gone into making it. The third star is for this one.

I wonder what the movie would have been in Rajkumar Hirani’s hands. Sheer hilarity is my guess.

Hello friends, every Friday marks the release of a new movie and this friday released one of the movies from the Raju Camp. Though the movie was not badly awaited one, yet when it is Ramu Camp, its sure to create Ripples. So lets look more into the movie....

Cast:-

>> Chunky Pandey

>> Aftab Shivdasani

>> Manisha Koirala

>> Isha (Kisna Fame)

>> Zakir Hussain

Director: -

>> J D Chakravorthy

Story in the nutshell: -

Isha is Kidnapped and her parents looking for her. Whoever enters the place where she is kept is not allowed to move out of the house therefore its BANDH DARWAZA. She is kidnapped by Chunky and group, so what will happen now! There have been nearly fifteen to twenty people who entered into the house...how they will accomodate so many people without the outsider knowing that so many people have been staying inside as captives. Why have they kidnapped te girl? What will happen in the ned, is what the movie all about. Watch and enjoy.........

Performance: -

>> Chunky Pandey

After such a long time, we see him on-screen with nothing great in the BOX. A role thats nothing to be talked about is what he has been entrusted with. Director could have given him much better a role and could have got better performance from him but he failed.

A character, I would say not suited for the actor.

>> Aftab Shivdasani

Comedy is not his cup of tea, this is what people thought for many years and till now but Aftab do it with great ease. He gives his best through this movie and herein nobody can put a finger on him and say he failed...............

>> Zakir Hussain

Won't tell you about him, you just go and check out.

>> Manisha Koirala

She is a great actress who had been away from the silver screen for some time but she's back with another role suited for her. Thoguh she could have done it in a better way, she is OK. Nothing great baout the role though but whaever she has done is acceptable.

>> Director: -

The director fails to leave a great impact. He could have done better is what I believe. Having great actors like Manisha and Chunky and even then you lack inextracting the best from them is what I will say the director failed to do. I think Ramu should have directed the movie by himself instead of asking some other person.

Ramu, we like your concept but why to give the reign in the hand sof some other person.

>> Movie: -

As like other Ramu movies there are no songs. The comedy is subtle and not the cheap kind as seen in Kya KOOL hain Hum and Masti. Chunky gave some good frames but even then he could have done better, Isha is good at dancing and not for acting, she proved the fact once again through the movie. Her dances are fabulous but there are no songs in the movie so what the lady will do?

The background score is good and thats the only thing I guess that Audience would enjoy in the movie. the satire could have been more straight and forward, but its too soft for the public to understand. The cast is also not that impressive to attract the crowd....

lets see what will happen to the movie.

Cast: Aftab Shivdasani, Manisha Koirala, Divya Dutta ,Isha Shravani and Snehal Dhabi

Direction: Chekravarthy

Overloaded with lame gags and clumsy slapstick, Darwaza Bandh Rakho has about as much comedy value as a cold in-flight meal. Despite a potentially humorous storyline and accomplished comic actors like Aftab and Chunky on board, Chakravarty's screenplay is a mish-mash of buffoonery and bad dialogues.

It's about a group of four down-on-their-luck guys who figure out that the only way they can make big money is by kidnapping the daughter of a richie-rich businessman and demanding a ransom in exchange of her return. And that's exactly what they do.

Since these guys aren't professional kidnappers, they're not exactly smooth at their job. They end up breaking into the home of a Gujarati family with this girl they've just kidnapped, and they end up staying here much longer than they'd intended to because the girl's father has just taken off to America.

With a perfectly respectable cast list and a noted director at the helm, you'd be forgiven for expecting a film that is at least watchable, but Darwaza Bandh Rakho defies all expectation. With a disjointed plot that leaves you bewildered and the absence of any real story or characterisation, the cast are presented with more than a few problems at the outset.

The main problem with DBR is that it tries WAY TOO HARD to make the viewer laugh and just comes across as extremely forced. Comedy is all about timing and about natural. Chakravarty has tried to make a comedy which pokes fun at itself, but fails to tap into the genre correctly and makes a mess out of it. To make matters worse, the screenplay is as unexciting as having a month-old pizza . In fact, the viewer starts squirming after the first fifteen minutes itself.

There are certain sequences which raise laughter likeof pizza delivery boy .But that's it.Please think carefully before your next movie Mr.Chakravarty.Cinematography is the sole department that stands out in the enterprise. The camerawork is of superior quality. Dialogues are equally lifeless.

There are 35 important characters in the movie and frankly everyone manages to come up with just an average performance. None of them are able to rise above the script and the end result is just about fine.

In the end, DBR is one of the weaker products from RGV in recent years. Those looking for some non-stop fun' would at maximum manage to have a few smiles in their way but that's about it. At the box-office, it's a big disaster!

DARWAZA BANDH RAKHO

Please Keep your doors closed!!

1 rich little poor girl – 4 kidnappers – 35 uninvited guests

A hilarious plot, rib tickling dialogues, excellent background score and great characters make this movie an instant hit. A short and fast paced movie, it really makes you glued to your seats.

THE PLOT

Aftab, chunkey and his team are all frustrated and in need for money are set out to perform the first ever kidnap of their life. Isha sharvani, the daughter of a rich industrialist, is very excited to know she is kidnapped. “How exciting and adventurous. I’ll be on the front page of every newspaper!”, is her instant reaction when she comes to know about her kidnap. The kidnappers not knowing where to hide her, break into a typical gujrati family’s house and then everything starts – the house maid’s husband who is a constable to pick her, and then the moneylender to collect his interest followed by his son, a veterinary doctor to cure the heart attack of the moneylender, a pizza boy who wishes to enter the underworld, a real estate agent and many other people enter the house and are stuck up there.

DIALOUGES

One of the major features of this movie are its dialogues! Dialogues of the typical underworld bhai, of the gujrati bhaishab, the poetic south Indian doctor, marathi kamwaali bai and the kidnapped excited rich girl, all have been wonderfully compiled. One remarkable dialogue in the film is when the doctor enters, leaves after the check up and then the gujrati house owner says “Is ghar main incoming free hai aur outgoing cut hai.”

BACKGROUND SCORE

Jahalak Dikhlaja, Aashiq banaya Apne - these are the ringtones in the movie which play everytime the kidnappers receive a call! Each and every moment in the film has apt background score. Whether it be when the pizza boy dreams of joining the kidnappers gang and be a don like dawood ibrahim or be it when the moneylender’s son falls in love with the gujrati house owner’s daughter – the background score is excellent!

CHARACTERS

From marathi to gujrati, english to telugu – this film has all in it. One character to watch is the gujrati house owner. His face expressions make you fall from your seat laughing! Each character has a valid reason to enter the house! And if you are from Andhra Pradesh, you will really enjoy the dialogues of the two comedians from the telugu film industry!

Some of the actors I know are:

The kidnappers – Aftab, Chunkey pandey and two others.

The kidnapped girl – Isha Sharvani

The sales girl - Manisha koirala

Isha’s father the industrialist – Gulshan Grover

and many other great actors!

This movie is very different in its own way. If you are the one who is waiting for bollywood to produce new fresh movies then you need to watch this. All in all this movie has everything in it to be a great comedy! A must watch and do remember – darwaza bandh rakhna!
