Billu Movie Reviews

AWFUL movie
Feb 13, 2009 05:03 PM 987 Views

I had a lot of expectations from this movie from being a director who already directed classics like saza-e-kala pani and Viraasat and who knows how to make rural backdrop comedies like Malamaal Weekly...

Hence I had a belied that Billu (x- Billu Barber) would be a good balacne between a fine story telling in a light hearted and commercial way...but hel.. I WAS HIGHLY DISAPPOINTED after watching this flick.... its a complete mess and I can easily call it the weakest movie of Priyan Darshan.

I dont know whats he criteria of Taran Adarsh who bashed and gave only one star to great films like SWADES and praise highly and gives 3.5 stars to such a weird and pathetic film... plz dont beleive on Taran's reviews, they r misleading at a high level.

Billu is a story of a common man Irfan khan who is a barber and lives with his wife and 2 kids in a poor financial condition....Fate changes his life when a superstar (srk) comes into this village and Billu's life become up side down... sounds like an interesting idea but it gets terribly wrong and horrible on screen.

Priyan Darshan tried to make a middle of the road film, but in result made a weird cinematic experience that will make you irritated at the end of the film... the viewer feel cheated as the treatment of the film is so immaturish that it feels like if a 10 year old kid has written and directed the movie, ecpecially the "kar bhala ho bhala" kinda climax

The music is strictly average but songs picturised on 3 hotties were quite good... but it seems repetitive after we already watched recently the cameo of so many big stars in Luck by chance..so srk, deepika, kareena and priyanka's special appearances never gives any excitement to the already bored vewer

Performance wise Irfan Khan is as always in top form...it is his best performance after The Namesake, but will be neglected due to the poor film in general..Lara Dutta was quite good and seems fitted in the de-glam role very well. The screenplay was inconsistent, incoherent and failed BIG time to awake any kind of interest or entertainment in viewer...the over the top act of srk like a God is especially annoying and seems to much exaggerate.

The only thing which was good in this movie (besides Irfan's performance) was the crisp cinematography and the locals looked beautiful onscreen.... but whats the benefit of great cinematography if the script, treatment, screenplay and direction are weak, boring, senseless and irritating.. On the whole Bille is a STRICTLY NO NO movie... better reserve your money for Delhi-6 which seems to be a good movie (atleast from the trailers)

Earthy and Unpretentious

Billu is not a path breaking ‘intelligent’ movie, nor is it a masala potboiler. It is just a simple story simply told. Watching Billu is like floating on a boat while enjoying the fresh breeze and the occasional spray of water on your face.

Billu (Irfan Khan) is a poor barber who lives in a small village with his wife (Lara Datta) and two kids. He is a humble but highly principled man who endures his poverty with dignity and a dry sense of humour. His life changes suddenly when Sahir Khan (SRK), a movie superstar, comes to his village for a film shoot. Sahir and Billu used to be school friends but had lost touch many years ago. The word gets out the Billu is Sahir’s friend and all of a sudden Billu becomes the most revered person in the village. People start doing him favours, his decrepit small shop starts getting lots of customers, everybody wants to be his friend in the hope that he will help them meet Sahir. Billu is bewildered with this unwanted attention. He fears that Sahir may not remember him and hence, does not want to contact him. Urged by his wife and demanding kids, he agrees to go to Sahir but all his attempts to get through Sahir’s Z-grade security prove futile. In the meantime, the villagers get impatient with Billu’s dilly-dallying and accuse him of being a fraud. Don’t want to give the rest away.

For me Priyadarshan has always been a director who showed his best potential in serious subjects like Kalapani, Viraasat and Gardish. But he prefers making comedy movies filled with more characters than one can count. Some of them have been quite good and some quite idiotic. In Billu he brings together both the serious & comic elements, and also adds his sensitive touch. The result is sweet and heartwarming, but also a bit dragging at times.

The main reason the movie appeals is the characters are real and identifiable. Irfan does not play Billu, he becomes Billu. His eyes (oh my God those eyes!) show vulnerability, dignity, bewilderment, emotional turmoil…..everything. Your heart smiles when he smiles, and goes out to him when he is down. SRK brings in the glamour element and most of the time stays in the background. Billu earthiness and Sahir’s flamboyance are complete opposites, yet it was not difficult to imagine them as friends – the sensitivity in both their eyes is the same. SRK does his bit well but I felt he was not his usual self in this movie, the charm was somewhat missing. Lara Datta is good as the supportive yet demanding wife. The kids who play Billu’s son and daughter are excellent. The rest of the cast consists of Priyadarshan regulars and they are all competent specially Om Puri, Asrani and Rajpal Yadav.

The promos suggested a movie filled with item songs but thankfully they are just used to establish Sahir’s identity or to take the movie forward and don’t seem like intrusions. The music is nice, so is the choreography. The cinematography is brilliant, the fresh beauty of the village is very well captured. The art director has also done a very good job. Dialogues are another high point of the movie. Editing is just about okay, I specially felt establishing Billu and Sahir’s characters took too long. The end of the movie was good but could have been better.

My Final Take -Billu did not make me go WOW! But it was a very pleasant experience.

BILLU BARBER: MODERN SUDAMA & KRISHNA
Feb 13, 2009 03:59 PM 1702 Views

I never thought that SRK can move to such a height in movie making. This time he proves that he is not only a good actor but also a great human being. It must have been lots of thought collisions which would have struck his head before producing a movie like “BILLU BARBER”. The promos show a very commercial look. If at all you are expecting something like that, cancel your booking right now.BILLU BARBER is a hard hitting and then to a very soft story.

We have heard the tale of Krishna and Sudama, where Krishna helps his old and poor friend revive in life. That’s the tale of BILLU (Irfaan Khan) AND SAHIR (SRK) too. I don’t think I need to elaborate the story any further. If you are aware then you know what you are going to see, which can be seen any number of times, and if you aren’t then go for it, you are missing something in your life lessons.

Irfaan Khan takes his acting to the next level where you laugh when he laughs and cry when you see tears in his eyes. He doesn’t speak much but keeps you waiting for his dialogues. No awards can suffice the excellence.

Lara Dutta, I never knew she can act but this time she proved me wrong, probably a number of you too are going to be surprised by the grace in her act.

The two kids, playing Billu’s son and daughter are excellent. Look for the punches in their conversations.

Rajpal Yadav,Asrani and Om Puri are as funny as ever. Om Puri remains irritated throughout the movie and his irritation is just a treat to watch. Rajpal as a broken poet writes some great funny poetry.

Finally, the “INCIDENTALLY SRK”, who plays the superstar Sahir Khan, is dynamic, stylish and funny.Summing up, I don’t feel he even spoke for ten minutes in the movie but his presence is going to invite the crowd which might have ignored this great work of storytelling calling it as one of the parallel flicks.

The camerawork and cinematography needs to be applauded. The cinema screen just looks too beautiful with the projector flashing BILLU BARBER on it.

Music is very nice and peppy but some songs were oddly placed, anyways, they didn’t seem bad cause of the presence of Shahrukh and the beautiful bollywood ladies.

Priyadarshn sets a milestone now, he proves than being a render of comedy doesn’t mean that he has lost the art of making some good and brainy cinema although his trademark comic scenes are often visible in the movie.

I don’t want to elaborate my review as there is no need of doing it.

If you like good music, go for BILLU BARBER.

If you like good stories go for BILLU BARBER.

If you like good acting, go for BILLU BARBER.

If you like good movies go for BILLU BARBER.

And last but never the least,

IF YOU WANT TO SEE TWO TITANS, SRK AND IRFAAN SHARING THE SCREEN TOGETHER THOUGH FOR FEW MINUTES, GO FOR BILLU BARBER.

Some people hold to truth which is hard. Truth has no wings or attachments. It is so solid. Desires and dreams on the other hand have many wings. Not many of us like solid truth. We fit wings to it and tempt it to fly. We will add water in the milk, fill air in the balloon till it blow up, and cover up our faces with false make ups. Slowly we train the truth how to fly…but how long the truth can fly with this patch up wings?

On the other hand, there are people who live in virtual world, who sells dreams and have a glittering and dreamy life in outsider’s view. However, can this glamor and dreams give them happiness and freedom which others enjoy without knowing its value? When they possess money and fame doesn't it make a prison out of it, so that the truth and peace cannot enter? How far they can hold to their true self unaffected by the fast pace and vast wings?

Billu is a story of Billu (Irfaan Khan), who is a barber by profession lives a life close to truth and down to earth. He however is not ready to give up his values in front of struggles - even when his children are been thrown out of school or when his earnings get reduced day by day. His children make fun of him but his wife (Lara Dutta) with whom he ran away from the home village share his struggles. Billu is also the story of Zahir Khan (Shahrukh Khan) who was a class mate of Billu and now flying all high and the superstar of the time. Each success comes with attached strings ofdanger and he is now having a Z category security. Zahir Khan's unit comes to a small city near to Billu's village. The news is been flashed that Billu and Zahir were classmates and the life is not the same again for him. Watch Billu (Billu Barber) to know more about it.

The movie is a remake of Malayalam super hit 'KathaParayumbol'. Priyadarsan has done an excellent job in replanting the story to a different soil with perfection. This remake is on par or a bit better than the original in many aspects. (In the climax however Mammootty definitely took an edge over Shahrukh Khan). When the project was first announced I was less convinced that this is a product which will go in line with the tastes of Bollywood audience. However, after watching the movie I now think wish and expect my earlier conviction to find wrong.

The director who has proved many times that he is a superhit director for comedy movies. He however also proved that he is more than a comedy director. Billu Barber is definitely a superior product from Priyadarsan. With the help of a fine story (Sreenivasan)the movie keep the audience engaged and in the hands of Priyan the characters got more strong and the presentation far better. With the added technical brilliance and glamor the film is well made in a commercial format but applause is on for keeping the soul intact. All congrats to Priyadarsan! (Screen play is very good and dialogues need special mention.)

Irfaan Khan is known for his excellent performance in many films and Billu gives a perfect platform for this brilliant artist and see how he performs! Superb!! Shahrukh Khan is more natural in the film where the role demands exactly the same. The climax scene gives an excellent opportunity to the actor to show his caliber and Shahrukh did a good job. His dance scenes well mixed to the plot and he was quite cool in them as well. Lara Duttawho dared to play the typical village woman and mother of two in the glamor filled industry proved more than a point. Two child artists were natural and cool. Rajpal Yadav and Om Puri had to settle with small roles but they added fun in many places. Jagadeesh could not create the magic he did in the original or his earlier outings in bollywood. Asrani, Manoj Joshi & Rasika Joshi all did their small roles convincingly.

Cinematography is first class. The beauty of a virgin village or a poor but naughty night Manikandan's camerawork is an added attraction. The closeup shots in the climax scenes however could have been better. Otherwise it is a beautiful work by the cinematographer who created the mood for each frame in the style required for it.

For a change I had heard the films songs earlier but somehow didn't attracted me much, except the Khudaya Kher. However on screen the other songs too were looking good. Choreography is competent. The song shot on Shahrukh and Deepika is the best choreographed with good creativity. The song which mixes various Shahrukh film parts is innovative and will surely makes some nostalgia. Other songs too choreographed well but less creative in comparison.

Editing is one department Priyadarsan need to fix a quality editor whose absence can make a difference to a film. This time around the damage is less. Only on few scenes the fault comes out otherwise the film is well edited in most parts. However, have to say in the hands of a good editor the climax scene would have been definitely better.

The film has all it takes to keep a viewer to stick to the seat and we could not ask for better. Fora Shahrukh Khan fan this may be a treat where one can identify with the situations better. I have to make my reservation on the box office success of the film but the best possibility is that this film may become a hit among classes and masses where the film has something for both the groups to identify with. The film may not be a match to the romance mood on air, but it is a good entertainer and a good cinema. Go for it!

Do tell me what happens when the truth which tries to fly away meets with a dream which landed on earth with its soul intact?
