What a wonderful film. Friends I really love this frame and the acting Ajay Devgan has done in this film. Storyline is very good and catches the very comedy scenes in this film. The acting of Paresh Rawal is very very good enough to make laugh while watching the film. The story catches the lineup of how the guest comes in our house and disturb the whole family schedule. If I want to rate this film I would give five star.

Its lovely family movie with full of fun, laughter, natural exhibits of ones life.Paresh Raval as usual, in natural attar once again further consolidates his position as best selling comedian in indian film industry with his natural instincts & moods followed by superb script & direction from respective experts.

Children too will like this movie.

Ajay devagan too has done true justice to his role as PAPPU as affectionately called by chacha jee( Paresh Raval ). His wife's character has been played equally well by the new comer.Photography, direction etc. all go in unision in making this film a true family movie.

Must watch the movie with family before others tell you the story of this film.

I was surprised to find the movie turn out good! Paresh Rawal, Konkona and Ajay Devgan have put in good effort. There isn’t too much stereotyping, a little here and there but that Cinematic Liberty is granted for the smartly funny situations through out the plot.

The plots takes a Mundane Situation common in every family. The arrival of a guest, tweaks it and delivers a laughable comedy. Loved Paresh Rawals part to the Hilt. Right from his entry to the daily routine he follows, specifically the part - "Kitne Admi thee " with the Sholay guy. I had stomach cramps laughing!!!

I recommend it. It’s an out and out Clean Family Movie

Beware of the ATITHI!
Apr 02, 2010 10:42 AM4956 Views

Guests are of two types-those who visit just for a couple of hours and those who visit for a couple of (or maybe even more) days. I and my family have mostly faced only first category guests. But I dread the day when far-fetched relatives will come to our house and stay for quite a few days. After all, our daily routine and personal life will go for a toss. Thus where Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge scores is its huge relatable factor. You can identify with the situations the couple faces when an unexpected unwanted guest lands into their house and even sympathize with them. However, there is a lot more in the film that touches the viewers and that’s its biggest strength.

The story of the movie: Puneet (Ajay Devgn) is a film writer staying in an upmarket residential society in Mumbai with his wife Munmun (Konkona Sen Sharma) and their son. One fine day, Puneet’s chacha and very distant relative Lambodhar (Paresh Rawal) lands up at Puneet’s house unannounced. At first, the couple welcomes Chachaji with open arms but soon, they get tired of him because of his mannerisms, habits and huge huge appetite! Puneet and Munmun come up with various ideas to hasten Chachaji’s departure but they fail each time. To make matters worse, the guest refuses to announce when he would depart!

Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge begins wonderfully with some interesting sketches and a monologue by Jaaved Jaffery. It sets the mood but the later scenes where the couple and the child are waiting for a guest to arrive seemed too unreal. But things improve when the guest actually arrives and this happens in the first 10 minutes itself. The way Puneet and Munmun get irritated thanks to Chachaji was nicely presented. Hilarious scenes in the first hour are Chachaji telling the maid to sweep well and Puneet preferring to go to prison so that he can complete his script in peace than staying at home with his atithi! And how can I forget…Viju Khote getting irritated full-on thanks to Chachachi and how it leads to a disaster. The intermission point was excellent and the dramatic scene works very well.

As you can note, there’s not much story in the film and hence for some viewers, things might turn monotonous after a point of time especially in the 2nd half. Nevertheless, the sequences here work well especially Akhiledra Mishra sequence. However, the pre-climax and climax (involving Ganesh Chaturthi and Visarjan) was excellent and surprisingly, it wasn’t forced and gelled very well the plot. Also, the jokes and sequences throughout the film are sweet, funny and unadulterated. Hence this is a complete family film without a shred of doubt!

Ajay Devgn awes with a complete natural performance. You forget that he is a big star and view him as a common man suffering at the hands of an unwanted atithi. And shockingly, ever since he removed the ‘A’ from his surname, his films are doing a great job-first All The Best and now Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge! Hopefully, his next films (Raajneeti, Aakrosh, Once Upon A Time In Mumbai, Golmaal 3) would work and that too on its merits!

Konkona Sen Sharma as usual gives a confident performance and is extremely likeable. The way she everytime gets completely into her character and comes out with flying colours is really worth appreciating! Keep rocking Koko!

Paresh Rawal is what makes the film a winner. You hate when him when he makes life miserable for couple and you love him whole heartedly when he shows his humane side. A brilliant performance indeed! Sanjay Mishra was funny esp in his first scene. Satish Kaushik gives a fabulous performance. Watch out for him during his enty, intermission point and pre-climax! Akhilendra Mishra was hilarious. So was Viju Khote. Mukesh Tiwari tickles the funny bone when he tells how he bhagaoed a guest from his home! The actors who played Ajay’s neighbours and his kid were good too.

Atithi Tum Kab Jaaoge? by Ashwni Dhir

Watched on: March 18th, 2010.

@ Cinemax, Infiniti With: BMS Friend.

The movie was a one-time watch. Funny n light. Total shooting was done in Mumbai I believe, could recognize 80% of locations. Anyway, so the movie starts with a couple who are busy with their usual life of home-office-home. Their son asks the meaning of “Atithi dev-o-bhav”. They explain him and so the son says, why don’t we ever have guests at our place come over?

So one day, Paresh Rawal comes down claiming to be Ajay Devgan’s uncle. And so they welcome the “guest” happily.

Never did they know, it’s gonna be a tough one. They had to give away their comforts of the bedroom and sleep in the living room. The guest messed the whole picture of the bathroom. Farted, burped, gargled loudly early in the morn and demanded more n more food.

Guest is Pest

Guest is Pest, that's the way we normally think of when any guest makes a visit to our house. Of course, we might not blurt it out on the face, but director Ashwni Dhir has done a splendid job with his movie Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge. The movie is an ultimate comedy that does not preaches us anything except following our traditions that are long forgotten in the so-called sophisticated society. If you are looking for a movie that should entertain each and every member of your family than Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge is the right one for you.

The plot is very simple and to the point. Puneet(Ajay Devgan) and Munmun(Konkana Sen Sharma) are happily married and they have a son name Ayush. Since Puneet and Munmun are very much busy in their own professional lives they rarely get time to pay attention to other aspects of life like keeping a watch on their son's academic progress or socializing with their relatives. However, their lives change forever when one fine day Lambodar Chacha(Paresh Rawal) knocks up at their door. Like any other Indian couple they do invite Lambodar Chacha but soon the couple decides that they are fed up of Chachaji and would like to make plans to kick him out of the house and from their lives as well, but nothing works the way they want. How Puneet and Munmun finally get rid of Lambodar Chacha is something you should watch on the big screen?

Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge is more of a satire with a good mixture of comedy. The movie has funny dialogues and Ashwni Dhir mixes his punches very well. Most of the funny comments are comic as well as a stingy comment on the kind of culture we are living in. The movie not only compares the urban and rural lifestyle but it also shows a huge contrast between the kind of values we have today and the values of yesteryears. Ashwni Dhir does a fantastic job with the dialogues and screenplay as well. I really liked the way the word Atithi has been described as A-Ti-thi which means Un-timely and Un-expected. Music by Pritam is very average and none of the songs are chartbusters but they blend well when you watch it as a part of the movie because the songs actually pushes the story forward. Cinematography by Aseem Bajaj is good and decent.

On screen performance of Ajay Devgan is very good and the very scene of the movie is something you should not miss because its a laugh riot scene with one of the most comic dialogues I have ever heard in any film. Konkana Sen Sharma does brilliant job as a housewife and an architect who is strangled between handling finicky clients and Lambodar Chacha. However, Paresh Rawal steals the show with his superb acting skills. From the very first scene Paresh Rawal holds the attention of the audience and makes the story go around. Satish Kaushik and Sanjay Mishra have done their role very well as per the plot. In the end, I would like to say that if you enjoyed oldies like Chupke Chupke, Golmaal and other family entertainers than take my word you will surely enjoy this flick.

A Clean Entertainer With A lesson.

Athiti tum kab jaoge directed by debutant director ashwini dhir remind us of all those old clean classics made by great directors like hrishikesh mukherjee when people with thier entire family used to go to cinema hall and would come out with a pleasant smile ! :) this says it all that how good the movie is!

The movie starts with a working couple ajay and konkana and they have a cute little kid! They are all veryhappy in their sweet little family! Ajay is a script writer who usually writessenseless scripts but is successful and konkana is an interior designer ! The problem arises when an athiti (paresh rawal) which means a guest comes into their lives all of a sudden ! And thier lives go topsy turvy!

The guest is a very orthodox guy a typical villager basically with old traditional values but he's a very kind hearted person with a poor disgestive system! :p

he farts every second, would want to eat various varieties of food , would interupt inajays work , would wake them up at 5.00 a.m in the morning to gargle , would causehassels in thier professional life unintentionally that it, and to top it all the biggest crime that he does is make the maid leave the job (you know important a maid is in a woman's life) :p

tired of all this konkana and ajay make wierd schemes to get rid of this athiti which always backfires and puts them in different kinds of trouble , they even go to jail coz of these tactics of thiers lol! :p but thier kid loves the athiti and also tries to behave like him and learns all the mantra's .

Latter things turn really good for them cause of this unwanted guest who had earlierfrustrated them that where the emotional angle comes in the movie! There is also atwist in the movie in the end which i wont reveal here!

Direction - i just couldnt believe the movie is directed by a debutant director , its just so well made . It can be clearly seen that the director exactly knew what he wanted and he had done his homework!

Production - the movie is produced by amita pathak who is a daugther of renowned producer kumar mangat.

Cinematography - the movie is really well shot! No set in the movie looks over the top , and the camera angles in the movie is plain but has really got the niche of a professional.

Music - the music by pritam is amazing i especially loved that bhajan song which had the music of beedi jaliyle ! Lol :p

why to watch this movie??????

  1. Ajay and konkana look perfect as thier working upper class couple infact they dont have a romantic angle but still they look great together!

  2. Paresh rawal steals the show totally infact i think after hera pheri this is his best performance in comical role!

  3. The movie's songs fit in aptly and the title track is different but so catchy!

  4. It's a very sweet film and you would have a smile all through the movie!

  5. It's is shot amazingly well! The cinematography is super amazing.

  6. The movie is a very clean movie you can watch it with your grandparents too, in fact this movie should be watched with your kids who would learn the real meaning of this Sanskrit saying - athiti devo bhava (guest is god).

Why you shouldn't watch this movie?????

There's no such reasons you shouldn't watch it just go for it! In fact the only problem with movie is in the later half it just gets a bit long and stretched . A few editing here and there could have helped but still the movie is simply amazing go watch it!

At the box office the movie has earned 22 crores the first week itself and had been proved to be a hit. Such movies comes rarely so just go there sit back and enjoy this movie now!

After the overhyped 3 Idiots, an underhyped and unpromoted movie has come, got seen without any expectation in the mind of the viewer and conquered his heart. After Lage Raho Munnabhai, there had not come any good, clean, sensible and inspiring comedy. Now Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge has filled the vacuum. The great Indian tradition of Atithi Devo Bhavah (Guest is just like God) has lost its momentum due to the urban individualistic culture. But roots are, after all, roots. A man can forget his roots but cannot get rid of them, especially when they are as noble as considering the guest no less respectable than the Almighty. Indian mythology has considered Aatithya (being the host) as one integral part of the Grihastha Dharma (duties of the householder). This dharma is accompanied by love, emotion and warmth of relationships. Practical life constraints cannot abolish these subtle, untold things of human psyche that can only be felt within you.

Unlike 3 Idiots whose intellectual maker has dared to consider his audience as idiots, ATKJ, strikes an emotional chord with the audience. It is a comedy, hence cannot be altogether real but it's believable and digestible (at least the audience starts desiring it to be real while watching and emotionally associating with it). The laughters generated are genuine and not imposed. Throughout the movie, even if you are not laughing, you are getting a light, comforting feel.

A guest is not welcome in today's running, tight life when every moment you are thinking that the time is catching up with you and you cannot afford the luxury to entertain any guest. Further, a guest himself is also expected to be prudent enough not to bother you for more than one or two days. But what to do when an unexpected (and unwanted) guest bumps upon your household and your life ? ATKJ tries to find an answer through a seeming garden variety working couple who is not so ordinary from within as it respects the elders, adjusts with the guest and gets ready to forgo benefits and real life relationships for the sake of his honour. The guest though imposes himself upon the husband-wife-kid family apparently like a free-loader, is thoroughly human and sentimental. The more you know him, the more your resentment for him vapours out into the air filled with love and warmth. You want him to leave you but when the time arrives for his actual departure, your eyes refuse to control the tears.

I tried hard to find flaws in this movie but I couldn't. The script-writer as well as the director has done a splendid job. Right from the beginning scene (consisting of cartoons) to the ending scene when you come across a twist in the tale, the movie is thoroughly gripping and does not get loose even for a single minute. The viewer is simply lost in the flow of the movie, empathising with the characters. In addition to entertaining you, the movie reminds you of your ages old traditions, values and virtues. It is not unnecessarily lengthy too. The compact storytelling maintains the momentum and impact of the movie and does not allow you to yawn or look at your watch.

The music is good and well integrated with the narration. The editing and the cinematography departments have done their jobs well. As far as the performances are concerned, Paresh Rawal has perhaps got less footage than the hero-heroine duo of Ajay and Konkona but he is the heart and soul of the movie and he carries it alone on his shoulders. A class act by a class actor, living upto his reputation and expectations of his admirers. Talented actors Ajay Devgan, Konkona Sen Sharma, Akhilendra Mishra, Mukesh Tiwari and Satish Kaushik are perfect. Child artist, Ayush also has done well.

If you believe in Indian traditional values and household life ideals or feel the importance of relationships or even if you don't but are aspiring for a neat and clean, good entertainment; please don't miss it. It is a very delicious sweet served to you without fancy packaging and heavy marketing, fully capable of satisfying your entertainment hunger. The people who still miss Hrishikesh Mukherjee-Basu Chatterjee-Satyen Bose era, are most welcome to the theatres screening Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge.

Bring this "Atithi" home!
Mar 08, 2010 06:59 PM3716 Views

I think Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge(ATKJ) is one of the most under rated movies. It has been criticised much by people who fall in the so called "thinking" category. But actually, it does provide a 2 hour clean and light entertainment, which one can watch with the entire family. It is well spiced with devotional songs, and they never seem out of place. The song based on Raheem's Dohas and chaupais , does touch your heart.

One of my childhood memories is that of several relatives visiting us in Mumbai [presumably for a few days], but overstaying their welcome. Those days, the atithis were never looked upon as 'intruders'.

Times have changed! If you live in a metropolis, if your spouse and you work round-the-clock and have commitments to honour, any extra person - other than those living with us or is part of our day-to-day schedule - is strictly unwelcome. His/her arrival may cause hindrance and rob you of your privacy.

ATITHI TUM KAB JAOGE? mirrors a reality, but the story has scope for not just humour and emotions, the staple diet of most Hindi movies, but there's a generous dose of devotional quotient that is well integrated in the storyline.

Do you miss movies of yore, helmed by masters like Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Basu Chatterjee? ATITHI TUM KAB JAOGE? may not be a CHUPKE CHUPKE, GOLMAAL, CHITCHOR or KHATTA MEETHA, but it has a certain old-world charm that one misses in cinema of today.

Final word? Bring this atithi home!

It tells the story of Puneet [Ajay Devgn] and Munmun [Konkona], a married couple living in Mumbai. Their lives take an interesting turn when a distant relative, Chachaji [Paresh Rawal], turns up unannounced at their doorstep from a far-off village. The guest overstays his welcome, so much so that the exasperated couple come up with various ploys to hasten his departure.

ATITHI TUM KAB JAOGE? is a light-hearted entertainer that tickles your funny bone at several points. The best part is, you not only laugh at the funny one-liners, but also at situations, which are so life-like and which makes you connect with them instantly.

ATITHI TUM KAB JAOGE? rests on three characters primarily - Ajay, Konkona and Paresh - and director Ashwni Dhir and his team of writers [Robin Bhatt, Tushar Hiranandani] have ensured that there are ample [enjoyable] scenes that you carry home. What really takes you by surprise is the devotional factor that has been smartly injected in the screenplay. The traditional Indian audiences would love the Mata ki aarti , the Ganesh Chaturthi festival and the sanskaar that the atithi instils in Ajay and Konkona's child.

But the writing wanders into unwanted areas, which could've been avoided in the first place. The raid at the hotel, where Ajay, Konkona and their son move into, seems unnecessary. Ditto for the subsequent scene at the cop station. Immediately thereafter, Ajay hires the services of a Bhai to get rid of Paresh, which looks far-fetched. These three incidents, which come back to back, only add to the length of the film. Also, Paresh breaking wind [gas/flatulence] looks funny in a scene or two, but why make it a recurring occurrence? An overdose is embarrassing!

However, the climax, which starts with the sthapna of Lord Ganesh's idol in Ajay's home, till the culmination of the story, makes the goings-on immensely watchable. Director Ashwni Dhir, best known for penning comic shows, proves that he's at ease handling dramatic [interval point] and emotional [climax] scenes with gusto. Pritam's music is ordinary, but the songs fit well in the narrative, especially the two devotional tracks. The title track [Amit Mishra] is quite catchy. Aseem Bajaj's camerawork is first-rate. Dialogues [Ashwni Dhir] are excellent.

Come to think of it, it requires a lot of courage to play a role that's devoid of star mannerisms and Ajay enacts this part most convincingly. Konkona is spontaneous and a complete natural. Paresh is superb as the atithi . He's definitely the scene-stealer! Satish Kaushik shines, especially in the sequence when he apologises to Ajay. Akhilendra Mishra, Mukesh Tiwari and Viju Khote are alright. Sanjay Mishra is first-rate.

On the whole, ATITHI TUM KAB JAOGE? is a hilarious movie, but unlike any slapstick comedy. It's a light-hearted film with sensibility, humour and a strong undercurrent of emotion. This atithi is sure to find a place in your heart

ATITHI……. Family Film With Moral Lessons.

ATITHI…… Family Film With Moral Lessons.

Our Indian culture believes guests are equal to God. But today due to fast changing lifestyles in cities guests are considered as hindrance to our private space.

Atithi Tum Kab Jaogea moviebased on renowned Hindi literature legend Sharad Joshi's article Tum Kab Jaoge Atithi. I have read this movie is copied from a Marathi Film Doghaat Tisara aata sagala visara. I have not seen the Marathi movie, so I am not sure how far it is true.

The film revolves around three major characters played by Puneet (Ajay Devgan) a scriptwriter & his wife, Munmun (Konkona Sen Sharma) interior designer live happily with their little son. Life is routine for them until Chachaji (Paresh Rawal) the uninvited guest arrives from Gorakhpur. The couple hesitatingly tolerates Chachaji & extends their hospitality at first, but only to regret it later when Chachaji makes himself very comfortable & refuses to leave their house, despite an extended stay. The couples are worried & irritated with guest. They start planning to throw the unwanted guest from their home, but none of their plans work.

The first half of the film goes in establishing all the characters, and does a pretty good job of it. There are many funny situations in the first half, all handled with the help of comic situations. The second half is bit lengthy. The editor could’ve easily cut the unwanted flab to make the narration in shape.

This is a simple family oriented comedy. This is not a laugh riot movie, but displays comedy with the help of witty dialogues & situations. Just reminds of old classic comedies of Hrishkesh Mukherjee & Basu Chatterjee, but never find a place in the all time classic comedies list.

It is Paresh Rawal as Atithi is the scene stealer with his flawless comic timing. He remains the driving force of the film till the very end. The versatile actor easily outshines the rest of the cast. Does tend to overact quite a few times, but his comic timing is still intact.

It seems like Ajay Devgan would continue his successful spree after Goolmaal series & All the Best.Ajay has a good sense of comic timing and effortlessly carries off his role. Ajay is one of the few versatile actors who have excelled in all the departments, action, romance, emotion and comedy. In recent times he has given Importance to comedy movies, specially after success of Gool Maal series & All the Best. I think it’s important to keep doing something different.

Konkona Sen is spontaneous and a complete natural. Shows good comic timing. Satish Kaushik and Sanjay Mishra are impressive & chip in good performances

Ashwini Dhir, the director who made one of the finest comedy serial “Office Office” succeeds in telling a simple story, and extracts great performances from the lead cast.

Pritam's music is average but goes well with the mood of the film. The songs fit well in the narrative. Aseem Bajaj's camerawork is brilliant & Dialogues by Ashwni Dhir are very funny & witty. Robin Bhatt and Tushar Hiranandani pick a predictable story with some interesting twists & turns.

In spite of a predictable storyline, the movie is away from multiple plots & characters. This movie is not for people looking for intelligent or classic Cinema. If you go in expecting this to be another comic classic made by legendary film makers like Hrishkesh Mukherjee & Basu Chatterjee you will come out disappointed.

Unwelcome Guest

When you don't expect much from a movie, you are in for a surprise, even though the movie was just with 30% occupancy.  The laughter quotient in the movie is so natural and supple that one gets carried away and has an urge to peg on with the reels, unfortunately 13 reel is not enough.

The nuclear couple Ajay and Konkana sen and their son form a simple middle class family living in Powai from the huge apartment complex it seems.  But they claim to be living in Goregoan anyways both are close by.  Avinash ( their son ) is baffled by the term Atithi Devo bhava.  He enquires with his dad Puneet ( AJAY ) as to the real meaning of the term.  His mother Mun Mun too is unable to answer the question, for which she receives a taunt from his teacher.

Movie takes a turn when suddenly Gajodhar chacha from UP lands up to his apartment, and seeking Pappu from Gorakhpur.  He confuses Puneet with various complex relationship and network.  Ultimately Puneet accepts him as his relative.  From there the nightmare begins for his family.  The couple have to sacrifice their bedroom to his chacha.  They have bow down at his feet in traditional style etc to keep up with the ancient traditions.  Chacha is obviously played by the versatile Paresh Raval, who tries to ape Utpal Dutt of yore, to an extent.  How his antics leads from one disaster to another is the storyline of the movie.

The hit song Beedi Jaliyle has been twisted with the wordings Jyoti jaliyle and bhajan is sung by Paresh Rawal, which is quite hilarious.  Another scene with Sholay's Kaliya evokes peels of laughter. The taunt kitne aadmi the has been used to the hilt to bring out humour and ultimately cause of sorrow. How the normal couples life is disturbed by sudden arrival of a guest seems to be jest of the movie.  But wait the movies message is about Atithi Devo Bhava.  Guests are supposed to God in disguise.  One is caught in a whirlpool, and the director cleverly takes the audience on a melodrama. Satish Kaushik has pulled off his small role with aplomb, with Ashwin Dhir (director ) really pulling off a near winner in comedy. This movie is unlike blockbuster slapstick comedy of Priyadharsan. The movie is jointly produced by the big Hollywood banner Warner Bros for a change. Go and enjoy the movie and check out the anti-climax.

Sidenotes :  I remember once my colleague landed in the middle of  the night at 2 am, we welcomed him with open heart in 1986. Now he has relocated abroad and did not bother to call me while he was in Bangalore for a day in Oct 2009.

So goes the concept of athithi devo bhava in Kaliyug times.  We never expected any favour from him than nor now.

This is not a review. It is a warning for those 'Guests' on my review pages who come, dont rate, dont comment and leave because they are too averse to digesting anything which remotely resembles 'non-sugar' coated truth.

The story

The promos have given it away...literally! It is about a guest who comes, stays, messes up (or so it seems) the lives of a couple urbane and how they cope with him. Yes, there you have it. In less than 2 lines, the plot of this movie which is 2 hrs 20 mins long but feels like a never-ending soap opera!

The actors

Delightfully though, almost everyone in the cast was above average. Paresh rawal as the guest was O.K but I couldn't help feel he was totally mechanical. The director should have done a bit more to extract a pound of performance from this immensely talented actor. Ajay Devgn shines yet again in a somewhat comic role along with Konkana sen who plays the nagging wife with consummate ease. All the others (including Mr. Mishra from All the best!! and Kaliya from Sholay ) do their bit but never succeed in making any sort of impact on you.

The music

Almost like a third grade musical album is full with horrible singers and an equally horrible chorus is a torture on the ears. The title song does make a splash but fails to create an impressive one at that!

The direction, editing, screenplay and all the other technicalities which I don’t understand but feel I am wise enough to comment upon

The film comes across half baked with poorly drawn side characters who could have given the film some 'pace'. Sadly, it comes across as a movie which could have been so much more. The direction is kiddish and even silly at times, editing strictly average and screenplay is test of your patience. Too many silly events find their way to the screen which are superficial and don't bond with the viewers at all.(back-aches/ganpati pooja/loan EMI default...the list is endless!). The auditorium was 80% occupied and all I could hear was.

To conclude

In the modern day lives of a power couple (who are busy making money and have no time for relatives), there has to come someone who will take them back to their roots. This is what the film conveys in its painful journey of 2 hrs 20 mins. I was fooled by the promos and have to admit that if the makers of the film could have put same smartness in the making of the film, that they have put in the making of the promos, It could have been a tad better.

Watch it only if you have nothing else to do on your weekend.

Going with 1.5 out of 5 and still wondering about the levels to which Hindi comedies have stooped...they are just not funny anymore!

Peace and equanimity

After a really lo...oong time, I have watched a hindi movie that has made me laugh pretty much throughout, leaving a sweet warm feeling in my belly after!

DIRECTOR/ DIALOGUE WRITER: Ashwini Dhir

CAST: Paresh Rawal, Ajay Devgn, Konkona Sen, Satish Kaushik.

PLOT:

Puneet (Ajay Devgn) and MunMun (Konkona) are a typical Mumbai urban couple, handling their respective careers (she's an architect, he's a movie scriptwriter), and a sweet little son, whose hindi and cultural values are somewhat lacking. When their son asks them, what an "atithi" is, they are not really able to answer him as they have never had to entertain a guest...and are somewhat glad of the fact!

Then one day, they have a Lambodhar Chacha from Gorakhpur (Paresh Rawal) landing up at their doorstep, who teaches them quite definitively what "Atithi Devo Bhava" used to mean in yester years! He takes over their household and neighbourhood, makes them do his bidding, gently harasses their shirking maid (who we all know is worth her weight in gold!), lets out gaseous emissions liberally all over the house..pretty much horrifying the couple into wishing him away..SOON. Yet, truth be told, "Chachaji" is quite the charmer, as is attested to by the son who follows him around the house like a puppy.

Are the couple able to chase their atithi out? Or do they go completely bonkers failing to do so..watch this movie to find out!

MY TAKE:

I simply loved this charming movie! The "Chachaji" character was sort of a throwback to the RK Narayan, Hrishikesh Mukherjee kind of characters...completely genuine, childlike, yet with an acerbic, witty tongue....the kind of character that Utpal Dutt used to enact so wonderfully!

Even though the movie is funny throughout, it does have a message to communicate too. Exactly what are we accomplishing by having a busy, self absorbed life? What do we gain out of a life that is so full of routine, and devoid of spontaneous, joyful human interaction? The Chachaji character takes so much pleasure in meeting new people, having no trouble placing them in the fabric of his life. Exactly what the urban couple struggle against, and end up alienating themselves in the process. A few life lessons to be learned here.

What I liked best about the movie was the clever writing and direction, that never lets the movie take itself too seriously. While there is a message to be sure, the main goal of the movie is to make you laugh. My favourite scene is when Paresh Rawal sitting despondently, is shocked out of his misery by an elderly neighbour (old enough to be his mother) who tries to chat him up and calls him "Chachaji"! Its a scene that comes out of nowhere and Chachaji's grumpy, sarcastic rejoinder makes you grin widely! The director throws in a bit of cine magic right at the end as well. Just when you, as the audience, are preparing to be emotional, there is a cute little plot twist that makes you giggle instead!

Its not just the writing that makes it a good film, its the spot on casting. Paresh Rawal is such a GOOD actor, a rustic Utpal Dutt of our times .I really think there isnt anyone out there who can match upto him in terms of his comic timing, or his ability to convincingly play whatever character he is asked to take on. A lesser actor might have made Chachaji a caricature..but not Rawal, who plays him like he was born to be a UP se aaye atithi!

Ajay Devgn and Konkona are perfect foils to Rawal. Natural and in tune with each other (catch the non verbal communication between them!), they are really quite cute as a couple. I know its the serious, intense Ajay who has won the national award, but I really like him in comic movies, when he's required to be dead pan and just show helplessness to get laughs!

Soundtrack is ok, goes well with the movie..especially the mata bhajan to the tune of Beedi jalaile....Paresh Rawal takes that song to another level by his enthusiastic dancing!

What more can I say to convince you...go out and watch this movie.

You have to be in a seriously bad mood to not enjoy it!
