Sussana 's search for perfect happiness

Its a great movie for mature and broad minded audience!this is the package story of different stories, that every murder seems acceptable! Most of the audience, did'nt even get who the 7th khoon was!

And that's the best part, the answer is quiet easy, but yet it compels u to think who was it, at the end?She never got love from her first 6 husbands, but the 7th was the last option.

Great direction and awesome cinematography! Something Different in Bollywood

Average movie, nothing spectacular

This is a movie about a woman searching for a perfect life partner. It is somewhat unreal to think that if one does not like a partner, then they would kill them in cold blood and move on. The music was good especially 'Darling aankhon se aankhen char karne do'. The song 'O Mama' is also nice. It is definitely watchable, but not worth all the hype created around it. Priyanka Chopra has acted well, so have most of the characters. I saw Usha Uthup acting in a movie for the first time. The part with Priyanka Chopra and Annu Kapoor was disgusting.

Story: Susanna is a sad woman. All she wants is love. But all she ends up with is weirdness, wickedness and bestiality in the form of her sundry husbands. Naturally then, there is only one option left for her to end her bitter ordeal. Murder. The embittered woman devices innovative measures to rid herself of her unsavoury husbands, hoping to find the elusive happy-ever-after sentiment some day. Does she succeed?

Movie Review: Vishal Bhardwaj takes a leap from Shakespeare to Greek tragedy. After having successfully rendered Othello and Macbeth in a purely desi idiom, the avant garde film maker transforms Priyanka Chopra into a Medea-like inferno who is hell-bent on revenge, after she fails to get her due from love and life. Is this leap successful too?

First things first. 7 Khoon Maaf is an intensely dark film which unfolds in shadows and silhouettes. So, if you aren't mistakenly looking for entertainment here, you are going to love this half-lit canvas of crime and punishment which lays bare the innermost recesses of a tortured soul. Vishal never once slips and lets go of his hold on this intense study of grief and grime. From the very first shot, which explodes with a grimacing Priyanka pulling the trigger on God-knows-who, the director inexorably draws you into this welter of passion and crime. All the death play takes place in semi-darkness: an almost outward pouring of an evil soul.

And this brings us to the second stirring note of 7 Khoon Maaf. The film is based on a seven-page story by Ruskin Bond. Vishal not only fleshes out the characters and adds immense details to the plot and the narration, he also balances the moral fulcrum at an interesting point. Priyanka may be a murderer, but is she evil? Never. Like all good and realistic crime and passion plays, this one too showcases the protagonist as a woman with a purpose. She may have used poisonous snakes and mushrooms and loaded guns to do away with her husbands, but you don't really blame her. Because somewhere through her dark and devious journey, Susanna carries the pain of every woman wronged: either by a two-timing husband, a wife-beating husband, a junkie husband, a murderous husband, a dictatorial husband, a sadistic husband, a husband who treats his wife as a sex object. The poor soul has no option but to end her anguish, any which way.

In terms of performances, 7 Khoon Maaf would undoubtedly end up as a milestone in Priyanka Chopra's career graph. The actor displays exquisite command over a complex character that is definitely a first in Indian cinema. She renders a subtle and restrained portrayal of a lonely and wronged woman who wanted love and only love from life. Amongst her husbands, it is Neil and Irrfan who excel as the brutes, even though it is hard to find fault with any of the characters in a Vishal Bhardwaj film. The music score (Gulzar and Vishal) is riveting too and boasts of the mesmerizing Darrrling number, amongst other tuneful songs. A word about the length: a bit of editing and tightening would make the experience more compelling.

Serious, sensitive and stirring, 7 Khoon Maaf is a whole new cinematic experience. Watch how Indian cinema is metamorphosing into something more substantial and glocal.

OH SUSANNA....

Can killing be justified? Well very debatable. A nation kills someone when that person is considered to be too unfit to be a citizen. Fanatics kill because for them that’s their Almighty wish. Sometime a person kills himself when he thinks it’s end of the world for him.

People kill their near and dear one for the sake of honor. Though somewhere it is valid and somewhere it is not, still is it justified to kill a patient if there is no hope of his recovery? So in various reasons man kills man, but in all cases the killer has some justifications for his deed and most of the cases rest of the world don’t agree with that and hence people hate a killer.

For a change, Vishal Bharadwaj wanted his main protagonist to be a killer with a cause and he wanted his audience to agree with his justifications. It’s true till now almost in every movie the hero kills the villain and we justify that as good triumphing over evil. But how many times have we witnessed a wife kills her multiple husbands and still have the sympathy of the audience? It is indeed a very risky game plan and the question is did Vishal succeeded this time?

Source:*

The movie is an adoption from Ruskin Bond’s Susanna’s 7 husbands. The challenge was even tougher for Vishal as originally it was a seven pages short story; it is easier to make a movie from an epic rather than from a seven page short story. Matthew Robbins and Vishal Bhardwaj did a good job scripting the movie.

Plot:*

Susanna Anna-Marie Johannes was a daughter of one of the wealthiest man in Pondicherry during the British Raj, her father was so influential that they even had a revolver from the very first lot that ever came to India. After her father’s death she was left alone with her four trusted employees, an aged maid Maggie aunty(Usha Uthup), her butler Ghalib(Harish Khanna), their jockey cum horse caretaker Goonga(Shashi Malviya) and Goonga’s nephew little Arun(Vivaan Shah). Being a loner all she wanted was a little love, which she could not get from any man in her life and that’s why she desperately kept searching for love, respect as a woman, happiness and hence kept changing her husbands. The only way she was different was she did not divorce any of her husbands but killed each of them with the help of her most trusted three employees. A little description about the men in her life:

Edwin Rodrigues**: An ex-army officer who lost one leg during the operation Blue Star. Now as a handicapped person he became very jealous, dominating, angry, violent and when he took away Goonga’s one eye Susanna decided she was not going to tolerate this man anymore in her life and hence killed him.

Jamshed Singh Rathore**: He was a vocalist with full raw talent which impressed Susanna and she decided to marry him. But once she came to know about the truth of her husband that he stole songs composed by his close friend, still she did not hate him, she loved him a lot. He started taking drugs and she tried everything to help him to get out of this habit, but when she realized that she could not do anything rather than seeing him die in front of her eyes for his addiction, she killed him.

Wasiullah Khan**: A poet from Kashmir, she was attracted to a man again. In his sensitiveness she found her love. But alas, in their first night she discovered that he was an animal, just opposite to his public image. By no means could any sane woman stay with such a barbarian and hence she killed him also.

Nicolai Vronsky**: He as a charmer from Russia and instantly she felt in love with him. But he hides some very important facts of his life, firstly he was a Russian spy and secondly he already had a family in Russia. She could not tolerate this betrayal and killed him.

Keemat Lal**: Now she was a manipulator, she needed this police officer who was “laddu” on her for a long time to cover up her sins. She married him. Even Viagra could not keep her with him. Now as a habit, she killed him. Now being Susanna’s husband was the most dangerous thing in the world.

Dr. Modhusudhon Tarafdar**: Modhu Da could not realize that. He came as an angel to save her life and she married him. He was a scientist and he worked on mushrooms. But he had evil intension. He was bankrupt and he eyed on Susanna’s property and hence tried to kill her. His motive was disclosed when mistakenly he killed her butler Ghalib instead of Susanna. Nevertheless, he was killed.

The Seventh Murder*

Vishal very intelligently showed us six murders of her six husbands. And he left it to the audience to decide which was her seventh murder, as the name of the movie suggests. After those six murders Susanna killed herself for the world when the then forensic expert and her sweet little Arun proved that she was death. Lastly she becomes a nun and marries Jesus Christ. The different openions about her seventh sin were, either she kills herself for the world or she marries Jesus to kill him also. But for me the seventh murder was not a murder but for Susanna it was a sin much worst then all the sins. She never had a child because Arun fulfilled that position and if she ever loved someone and if someone did not break her heart, it was her little charming Arun. For Arun she was an angel. For her only, now he has a respectful life in the society. But once in an insane situation, when she was almost a mad woman, she tried to seduce Arun. According to my view, Vishal very intelligently indicated that as the seventh murder. That’s the murder of Susanna’s soul.

Performance**:

Acting:  I can’t imagine anyone else in Susanna’s role than Priyanka. She was out of this world. With ease she justified one of the most complicated characters I have ever seen. Hats off to you Piggy Chops, I salute you. As her husbands Neil Nitin Mukesh, John Abraham, Irrfan Khan, Aleksandr Dyachenko, Annu Kapoor, Naseeruddin Shah all justified their characters. The surprise package was Vivaan Shah, the younger son of Naseeruddin as Arun, he was really good and he proves that he carries the gene of the acting legend.

Music**: Was good, not great as per Vishal’s standard. It could have been better.

Cinematography**: Ranjan Palit did an outstanding job. The mystery and suspense of the story is well complimented by some excellent camera work.

Direction**: 8/10, well job done Vishal, the best part of the movie is, it’s not like a gruesome murder mystery but in it’s serious approach Vishal will make you laugh in every scene. This is actually a comedy movie in a different angle, they call it dark comedy. Congratulations Vishal for attempting such a complicated story successfully.

Saat Khoon Maaf (2010)

Saat Khoon Maaf(2010)

Director: Vishal Bharadwaj*

Story: Ruskin Bond*

2 and half out of five*

Brilliant visuals but the film fails to link it to form a story.

Bharadwaj has been known for his rattling adaptations from classic literary masterpieces to contemporary form of cinema, maybe it be Maqbool(Macbeth), or Omkara(Othello) or The Blue Umbrella(same name story by Ruskin Bond), he’s always justified in translating the texts to astounding visuals with his vivid sense of celluloid cinema. This time he adapted Ruskin’s story under the name “Sussana’s Seven Husbands” to 7KM. There were many reasons to watch this film, major ones being cinematographer Ranjan Palit incredible work history behind the camera, Usha Uthup humming on Russian tune, a super-talented cast ranging from Naseer Uddin Shah to John Abraham and a women centric film!

Despite all the cards working in his favor, Bharadwaj has produced a wannabe low-lit East European cinema style of film. Talking about the technical parts the dingy shadowy Noirish atmosphere is overdriven by Ranjan Palit to a point where you wish they’d switch on the lights, instead of literally keeping you in the dark. I was always clear in my mind – if I ever I direct a movie I will shoot the entire movie with Steadicam. But after watching 7KM I have my second thoughts. I missed jimmy jib. The over usage of Steadicam tracking shots made it look like a bland documentary. Also, the continuity of the shots were messed at places. The only thing that saved the film in technical part was Sreekar Prasad’s editing. He saved the audiences from the excruciating details often foreseen to be chopped off by novice editors. One shot I’d like to mention in particular is the Church shot which shows a time lapse. The transition from present to past is something to watch. However the extensive usage of voice over technique spoils the visuals.

And in all fairness I must also mention the positives. I will mention two – first is the Irfaan Khan story. Superb writing and direction. Second best would be the Russian hubby’s story. Both the stories hit the right spots and extract the desired impact. It maintains rhythm throughout. Usha Uthup’s singing and Ruskin Bond’s guest appearance were a nice surprise. To convey the passage of time, references are made to events like the fall of the Berlin wall and the Babri Masjid. Keep your ear alert. The film also has its share of ‘not intended but turned out to be funny’ scenes. To list a few were the scenes where a dwarf fighting an Indian Jones-like whip combat, a panther frozen mid-air by special effects, a couple making out a graveyard tombstone. Alongwith adapting from Bond’s Susanna’s Seven Husbands, Bharadwaj has also drawn sources and paid homage to Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina and Bluebeard’s Seven Wives. To sum it up; a dragged plot, intriguing background score and music, nice performances by Naseer, John and Irfaan and a decent performance by Priyanka Chopra. Her character was sketched out very poorly. She kills six men and she’s not even portrayed as a psycho, she’s stalwartly one-dimensional.

The only thought pondering in my head after watching the movie was; ‘Was it a film or a sadomasochistic spree?’

Meet the World's most ravishing MURDERER!
Feb 23, 2011 04:18 PM36012 Views

Vishal Bhardwaj! The very name is enough to get viewers to theatres. After all, every film of his (Makdee, Maqbool, Omkara, Blue Umbrella, Kaminey, Ishqiya) and also his short film (Blood Brothers) has managed to successfully engage and provide high-octane entertainment as well as meaningful cinema. Hence, 7 Khoon Maaf was definitely on the ‘must-watch’ list of almost every moviegoer. And that was also not only because of Bhardwaj’s successful track record but also because 7 Khoon Maaf had a deadly theme-a woman marrying multiple times and killing all her husband’s! The star cast and the songs were like an icing on the cake! However, 7 Khoon Maaf does have its moments but unfortunately falters at several places. At places, it’s the execution that’s erratic and at places, it’s the writing that’s flawed. What remains consistent is the performance of Priyanka and of course, the murders!

The story of the movie: Susanna (Priyanka Chopra) is a beautiful lady any man would die for! And sure enough, nearly half a dozen husbands of hers are already dead! They were:

  1. Major Edwin Rodrigues (Neil Nitin Mukesh): Suave and dashing. But also possessive and chauvinist

  2. Jimmy Stetson (John Abraham): An upcoming musical sensation who turns out to be evil

  3. Wasiullah Khan (Irrfan Khan): The strangest husband of Sussanna! A poet who seems so innocent and sweet to everyone, but is completely opposite on the bed

  4. Nicoloi Vronsky (Aleksandr Dyachenko): He has everything a woman looks in a man. But unfortunately, he had a hidden secret and Susanna unfortunately learnt about it

  5. Keemat Lal (Anu Kapoor): He’s a cop who gets to know Susanna when he investigates the deaths of her husband’s. He gets attracted to her and blackmails her to marry him. And that was his biggest mistake

  6. Mohdusudhon Tarafdar (Naseeruddin Shah): An expert on mushroom, he seemed very sweet and witty. But he had some deadly plan in his mind

Susanna then marries the 7th husband who knows everything about Susanna’s misadventures and that she’s a sinner and yet accepts her. Who is He? To find out, watch the film.

7 Khoon Maaf is completely unconventional. The narrative, the theme, the concept and even the culmination…everything is attempted in an unusual manner. And that is its plus as well as minus point. It works as it comes a change from the usual Hindi films. And it doesn’t work too because at places, the film gets little stretched and also it gets too bizarre. I would blame the execution here. However, all the murders were very handled!

Out of the 7 stories, each one had its own merits and demerits too. The one involving Neil Nitin Mukesh was interesting thanks to Neil’s characterization. And his murder scene was too good! John Abraham story again worked for the same reasons-John’s (weirdo) character and his murder. Not to forget, the O Mama/O Mata dialogue…very funny! Irrfan’s story was a shocker. More so because of 2 different sides of Irrfan’s personality. Aleksandr’s track went above the head at places as few of his Hindi dialogues were difficult to decipher. And his murder was kind of unimaginative too. Anu Kapoor’s track was awesome especially the church scene involving his marriage (which suddenly transforms to something else in seconds…too good!). Naseeruddin Shah’s story had the ultimate thriller element. And it was here I wished that the flashback mode of telling story was not adopted as one already knew what’s going to happen next.

The climax does come as a surprise and it was the best justified ending. More so because you don’t carry any hatred for Susanna throughout the film inspite that she’s a serial hubby murderer! She was hungry for love just like all humans and you feel bad that she came across all evil men in her life. And herein lays Vishal Bhardwaj’s biggest achievement! However, the film has several cinematic liberties (can’t believe I have to say this for a Vishal Bhardwaj film!) that might make you go, “WTF?! Howz this possible?!” It’ll be great if the viewers excuse these loose ends keeping in the mind the complicated plot.

In Bollywood, where heroines are still relegated to being merely arm candy, it’s nice to see a film where heroine is the central character. And it’s nicer to see Priyanka Chopra portraying the part as she has always essayed wonderful roles with élan. Even in her previous outing Anjaana Anjaani which was a turkey, Priyanka’s performance stood out. And in 7 Khoon Maaf too, Priyanka Chopra proves that she’s one of the most versatile actresses that we have today. Playing Susanna was no cakewalk and it’s magic that she plays her part so effortlessly. Especially in Irrfan’s story and the scenes wherein she was drunk (and not to forget the climax), she was so bloody brilliant! And we’ll soon be seeing her in 3 exciting films-Don 2, Agneepath remake and Anurag Basu’s Barfi! Keep rocking PC!

Neil Nitin Mukesh gives a dashing performance. His look, his smile, his talks...all oozed evil! Terrific! John Abraham portrays the weirdo character with élan. Irrfan Khan looked damn cute in his new look! But no sooner, you start hating him when he shows his true colours! Aleksandr Dyachenko looks very handsome and plays his part well. Anu Kapoor was completely rocking! Watch out for the way he says, “Madam”! This is an actor who has delivered some of the best performance in films like Hum, Ek Ruka Hua Faisla, Om Jai Jagdish, Aitraaz etc and comes up with yet another winner with 7 Khoon Maaf! He certainly deserves to be seen more! And lastly, Naseeruddin Shah was as usual terrific!

The film has a surprise in the form of Vivaan Shah (as Arun)! He has the maximum role out of all 7 men and he’s even the narrator of the film! Most appreciating fact is his voice and also the fact that he plays 30-something gentleman so effortlessly even though he’s just 20! Son of Naseeruddin Shah, Vivaan certainly has loads of acting potential and certainly viewers would love to see in such character-defined roles!

Shashi Malviya as Gunga leaves a deep impact. Usha Uthup (as maid) gets minimal scope but makes good use of it. Konkona Sen Sharma is also there in special appearance and it’s always a pleasure to see her! Ruskin Bond was alright in his small role!

Vishal Bhardwaj’s music is not as fantastic as his earlier attempts but nevertheless worth listening! Darling is the best of the lot although I wish it was fully played from start to finish. Bekaran, Awara, O Mama and Yeshu also leave an impact. His background score however was amazing!

P M Satheesh Shajith Koyeri’s sound design was among the best, especially during Naseer’s murder and also the intro scene of the film. Sreekar Prasad’s editing was slick although plenty of scenes (shown in promos) were chopped off to cut down the length of the film. Sham Kaushal’s action was topnotch (in Neil’s scenes). Ranjit Palit’s cinematography was too good. Locations, from Coorgto Srinagarto Pondicherry were eye-soothing!

The film is inspired from Ruskin Bond’s short story Sussanna’s Seven Husbands. Story, Screenplay & Dialogues (Mathew Robbins, Vishal Bhardwaj) was overall good but script could have been tighter at places. But the duo gets full-marks for their wonderful dialogues!

Dark Reality
Feb 22, 2011 03:44 PM5421 Views

This VB’s direction is a two way tale and if one antagonizes woman to be the culprit and buys ticket to watch a thriller, than it’s not there cup of tea.

It is not only a black comedy however a satire. A depressed schizophrenic meets alike men. And the tirade begins. This flick is meant only for who want to explore and unravel, as being a normal man and woman one would not be able to identify. The jest of her mind is when the butler describes her mindset post third murder.” She chooses to blow the dog's head off instead of choosing the other way” . It is a story of a mind way beyond normal psyche . A normal lady would commit suicide instead of killing her most rotten husband. Indian mindset readily would agree to it, maximum rebel is divorce with women who have their ground set. Whilst some critiques took it personally, if you reverse the game, we would have loved the movie had the man been the murderer.

The flick offers the audience a plethora they have never been exposed, however,” My friends it is reality!” I have seen women with dozen divorces. They choose the other way, leave! Put in on a different perspective, we all think of killing the politicians, in the end we do not vote for them as we are safe, however one in a million might kill all! What one must know that it is not a folk story; it is stark reality which we do not want to accept. We want a graphical imagery and would get if you watch with absolute neutral inhibitions. The depiction has no whirlwind twists but one twist which missed is when she tells the Russian guy, “why marry? Want to remain in love”. The other angle is the lady is not devoid of humane limitations as she sponsors the education of the destitute child who grows up to be the forensic expert and narrates it to his wife the saga of Susanne, his childhood crush. The schizophrenic mindset has two divisions and 80% of Indian women go through it, either they go through depression or aggression leading to massacre and self destruction. This story depicts the other. And it depicts a woman with free will however with too much lament and depression curled within. Although VB offers enough reasons to empathize with Susanna, however the transitions from one marriage to other at times show her in light of desperation. The viewers are left with a point of what next when Susanne marries for the seventh time with one who knows all her past sins and is already ‘dead’.

Priyanka’s 35 year old journey and its transitions have been handled with élan and she does full justice to each of the transformations. In the end what viewers would notice is her predicament of why this way, however, the agony aunt playing Susanne has more to tell. Wrong lady full of wrong choices in attempt to find true love!

Vivaan Shah the narrator made an intriguing debut and is one to watch out for. Irfan , John,Annu Kapoor, Naseer, Neil and all played their part . Aleksandr Dyachenko did not have much scope. However the dark theme of the film predicted the film’s box office fortune. The hind side behind the narration though is some parts of the movie could have been more narrative and some of them were stretched.

The soundtrack of the film is limited with its best offering ‘Darling’ which is quite a chartbuster. The editing by Sreekar is brisk and the transitions from marriage to funeral and vice versa need viewer’s attention.

Overall the movie needs to be watched for its dark narrative style which will not get it heavy in your head, Priyanka Chopra’s another superlative performance and of course those who want to explore the dark side of human nature and want to view this film in category of world cinema.

Darling Sunday ke din zehmat hui
Feb 21, 2011 11:26 AM5462 Views

We all very well know Vishal Bhardwaj from the days of maqbool, omkara, kaminey and ishkiya. The common element is there is lot hard work done on vernacular of movies. Most characters are remembered long by their pervert use of words. So, what is that we didn’t know this time, when we watched 7 khoon maaf. The cast is as fine as it could be with naseeruddin, irfan and annu, priyanka, konkana.

But, friends, Sunday ke din zehmat hui, yeh sach hai. Especially after the reviews telecast on television and published in the newspapers, which just go praising it. You just can’t kill because Ruskin Bond’s Susanna’s seven husbands had 7 husbands killed by the protagonist. And if she really did in the book, you can’t go on killing until you have reached 7 in the film. I have not read Bond, but feel the author must have given good logics to kill 7hbs.

Here, Vishal forgot to treat the story well, and the weakness came in the screenplay. He made every effort to tell us the reason for finishing all hbs, but why was he defending Susanna. She must have had some nuisance in her mind, which makes it easy for her each time she decides to kill one hb. There is sophistry committed, the term here means a deliberately invalid argument displaying ingenuity in reasoning in the hope of deceiving someone. After watching this hassle, I am not knowing what to write about it. But unlike others, VB has thanked RB, atleast we can read the novel now and know much better where did VB go wrong.

There are many reviews who say why did Susanna not opt for divorce each time rather than this mass killing(kidding). Perhaps they don’t know it takes longer than mass killing(not kidding). I’ll tell you why? Because VB wanted Susanna to kill all 7. No matter what, just marry, and just kill, Baby Suzy. But, let me give 3 to priyanka and konkana, 2 to irfan, annu and naseer, 1 to neil and less than 1 to john(y) baba. John, please start working hard, or else quit acting. Body can be swollen later any time.

Do not trouble yourself, not on Sunday Darling.

Ps: do not(mis) take hb for haemoglobin.

Good acting finishes up with a lame ending
Feb 20, 2011 02:41 PM5462 Views

Incidentally, this happens to be Vishal Bhardwaj’s 7th directorial effort. And, he makes a great beginning: First shot, a revolver, second, a haggard Priyanka Chopra holding it to her head; third, shots heard and blood on the wall. Ergo, no time wasted in getting his audience warmed up! But if you thought that the title itself is amply clear on what it offers, i.e. 7 murders, wait; there is a bit of it that is left hanging in the end.

Adapted from Ruskin Bond’s short story “Susanna’s seven husbands”, it moves along the narrative by Arun (Vivaan Shah), who secretly admires his benefactor, Susanna Anna Marie Johannes (Priyanka Chopra) as she goes though a series of weddings. It is a tale of Susanna’s tryst with love and disappointment with each of her husbands who meet their doom when they don’t match up!

The men are introduced; there is romance, then repulsion followed by death. The first is a cruel, suspicious and impotent army man ‘Adamkhor Major’ (Neil Nitin Mukesh) followed by plagiarizing rocker addicted to drugs ‘Ek Duje Ke Liye’ (John Abraham). She finds her third in Kashmir, a sadomasochistic poet ‘Musafir’ (Irfan Khan). Three down, she is tired of marriage and just wants to be in love.

Fourth of them is a two-timing Russian spy ‘Amar Prem’ marrying her to be able to stay in India but having a wife back home (Aleksandr Dyachenko). Fifth, a lustful and corrupt cop ‘Pyaar ki Keemat’ who is hell-bent on marrying her (Annu Kapoor). Most lethal of them all is a doctor who plots to kill her ‘Mushroom da’ (Naseeruddin Shah).

The seventh which is supposed to be a suspense (not revealed here) was possibly the only way the story could have ended. Bhardwaj calls him ‘Prem Pujari’.

The problem here is that the movie doesn’t go deep enough into Susanna’s mind. Barring the sixth guy, there wasn’t enough reason to kill them when she could have simply parted ways. But as the anecdote in the story goes about Susanna killing a menacing dog on her way to school, murder was the only problem solver she knew.

Set in Panchgani, the setting is a large farm-house where horses are bred and has its own chapel. Since the locale is rather secluded, it offers the right scenery for a period flick. The mansion is stuck in stuck in a time-warp as is its narrative forcing the film-makers to voice-over or show news-clips of events to mark the timeline

Clearly, 7 Khoon Maaf is not a thriller. There is not much of suspense either! She isn’t a femme fatale either. When wronged by all wrong men she falls for, she embodies the quote ‘hell hath no fury as a woman scorned’. But she was strong enough not to give up hope in her hunt for love or to turn herself in for murder. The men too found her charms irresistible ignorant of the fate that awaited them!

The leading lady deserves applause for portraying a complex character driven by passion. Aging from twenties to sixties, Priyanka Chopra looks her part, but her expressions hardly change; probably because her quest for love remained a mirage. Her best is when she laughs menacingly saying ‘this time I will drink his blood’.

Her men had to crunch in as much as they could in the few minutes they had. Annu Kapoor is showcased well as Irrfan Khan and Naseeruddin Shah emerge second best. Neil Nitin Mukesh and John Abraham were just about okay. The Russian was forgettable. Vivaan Shah delivers a fine debut performance.

Supporting cast had meatier roles. Usha Uthup as her maid, Shashi Malviya as jockey, Gunga and Harish Khanna as the butler make their presence felt. Ruskin Bond has a cameo and Konkona Sen Sharma is seen in a guest appearance.

Priyanka Chopra has established herself as a serious and multi-faceted actress. But what doesn’t clinch the deal for this flick is that it lacks flow. Also, it hesitates to show murder brutally and relies on flash-backs, slow motions, et al. A bit of editing could have saved it. Nevertheless, for what it is worth and with songs like ‘darling’, ‘bekaraan’ and ‘awaara’, ‘7 Khoon Maaf’ makes for a decent watch.

I BEG TO DIFFER

Where to start from, movie has ……., movie is………….; movie tells …………….

Fill in blanks with NOTHING.

Dark Movie a bout planned killings by Susana Annie Marrie Johanas aka Madamme and her loyal servants. Movie though has a good start but that weird felling is always there, first husband (Neil) has maximum role and fifth husband (Anu Kapoor ) has managed to get some humour in the movie. Priyanka Chopra the leading lady has done good work, others actors have been wasted. Narrator of the movie is also not very impressive.

First half is flat dud, second half is still better but ending was worse. It seems director Mr. Bhardwaj has decided to follow in steps of  Bhansali’s and Ramu’s. Why would some body spend money to make such movie knowing that it can never work? Even music is useless and not even a single song is relief in the movie, rather it just increases irritation.

Nothing else to say, I would say stay away from movie or you will end up doing 8th kill.

Film has been given 3.5 stars by one famous paper. I was able to experience few hundred during the movie. You know what I mean .

Womens' Independence day !!!!

First things first - I do not normally like Vishal Bhardwaj movies including Kaminey, Ishqiya, Omkara etc...BUT this 1 is definitely DIFFERENT movie...

Plot - The movie is about Susanna (Priyanka Chopra) life and what circumstances make her kill all her husbands..Incidentally Ruskin Bond has also acted in the movie(the oldest guy in the last scenes) on whose novel Susannas Seven Husbands the movie is based.

Acting - Priyanka Chopra has done a good job in acting but its not her best I would say..

Vivaan shah(son of Naseeruddin Shah) acting is good...The entire story of Susanna is told through this guy in the movie..

Annu Kapoors acting was the best amongst the 6 living husbands...She actually kills 6 living human being husbands..7th husband I guess is GOD.

Special mention of actor Shashi Malviya ( character Gunga) though he has not said anything in the movie...his acting is the BEST in the movie...was simply in awe of this guys acting..

Usha Utthup(the veteran singer) has acted in the movie..she was good and natural

Scenes - 1. When Neil Nitin Mukesh is killed 2 When Priyankas house is in fire...

Dialgoues - 1. Aadmi saanp (snake) se jyada zahrile hote hai (so true)

  1. Jyada kabhi jyada nahi hota...Kam mein satisfied rahne mein samajhdari hai

Songs - O mama and Dil Dil hai are good songs

Verdict: What I liked the most in the movie.is the independent, self-reliant aspect of women..Gone are the days of past when women used to be Sati-Savitri. In almost all the cases where Priyanka kills her husbands, audience knows (as well her 3 accomplices - Usha Utthup, Shashi Malviya and other guy) that she is unnecessarily suffering or injustice is being done on her or she was being used by her husband. Though the path she took of killing her husbands was wrong(ideally she should have taken divorce). Some psychos(who believe in male-dominated society) mite not like this concept. Hope this movie brings a mindset shift in women/men that women deserve self-respect/love/honesty in today's world...

People should atleast watch it for the independent concept..

7 Drives to Sublime
Feb 19, 2011 02:30 PM3420 Views

7 Khoon Maaf: Movie is fascinating but not a family entertainer , neither can be acclaimed as highly intellectual cinema. Priyanka doesn't seem at her 60's in the last few years of her life when at the same time Vivan Shah is trying to portray a 40 year old man looks more adolescent ;), movie is draped in dark but leaves no psychological impact as audience would have definitely been expecting a psycho-thriller.

BTW it's quite hilarious that VB himself has endorsed the film as 'a dark comedy' : and at last it's pathetic to see that how insanity ("killer-instinct'') of an abnormal woman who is actually fond of 'BLAAAD' could inclined her towards Sublime at the end??? if it's so, all the homicides occurred r the different obsessions leading to Nirvana, and the movie must be acknowledged as "7 Drives to Sublime".

Nitty-Gritty"100 chuhe khaa ke billi haj ko chali" 7 khoon maaf is all about.
