Neat Little Car
Jul 13, 2013 10:26 AM 62525 Views

Have owned it for two years. It's a neat little car with plenty of space and more than enough leg room unlike some of the other competitors. Mind you that its not the most expensive car so don't expect the luxury of mercedes benz from it. I will list some good points and bad points:

Interiors:

Are functional not luxurious but not bad

Air conditioner:

Fantastic ac with an added advantage of air conditioning in the glove compartment which keeps my water chilled

Driving & control:

Are very smooth and have no problem, drives like hot knife in butter

Fuel economy:

Good I get around 18-20/litre on highway without a/c & 15-17/lit with a/c

Looks :

Very smart and bit classy in the mid section range

Boot space:

Plenty of space in the boot takes two full sized luggages & one cabin luggage plus my laptop bag. But beware the only problem have noticed so far is that if you load her up too much rear with passengers on the back seat the car sits down on the rear a bit and have hit the rear bumper on speed breakers if am going a bit fast, no problem if your controlling your speed.

Conclusion:

A very good car at a very reasonable price with many banks ready to provide loan for it since its a good brand name.

Must Own Car
Jul 02, 2013 07:26 PM 57810 Views

I purchased the liva diesel car around 15 months back and drove for almost 55000 km. Till date the car performance in excellent. On highway i used to get a mileage of around 22 km with ac.

Road grip and balance is excellent on highway @ a speed of 90 - 100 km/hr.

Nice, comfortable and good mileage

Space inside car is very good compared to swift, ford and polo in hatch back section, very smooth drive and good mileage.

I have driven 1000 KM and I am getting 18.5/ltr on highway and 15/ltr in city with out AC. it is the best best car in Hatch back section. music system and interior is average.

Chennai India
Superior claims, Zero performance
Mar 04, 2013 01:06 PM 54542 Views

I purchased this from Harsha Toyota Chennai and my experience was bad from the word go. As the other dealer did not have my colour choice I was forced to go for the dealer. I was unhappy with the tyres and the fuel consumption from day 1. Any how I went for the 1000KM service and nothing happened. I changed to Lanson Toyota in Pallikarani near Velachery, and went with my problems. Their technician drove in a highway like condition and proved that it was giving 20.5 km where as I was getting only 13.5 in Chennai roads! They advised me to change the petrol pump, and the milage has improved to 15. I got 21 km only on my trip to kalahasthi in Andra near Tirupathi However I find the idle speed or fuel flow surprising.

Without any acceleration, it moves upto 5th gear and goes at a speed of 35-40 km without any problem. When I complained, as person from Toyota Bangaore calls me up and informs me that it is the way diesel cars are made! I am surprised and not convinced. Should not the fuel pump have some kind of adjustment. I feel my choice was wrong and I have blown up 7 lacs in the bargain, which is very unaffordable for me. ACTUALLY I COULD WRITE MORE BUT I DONT FEEL,  EVEN SPENDING OF MORE TIME FOR THIS CAR IS A WASTE! S.S.Mani, AIR-O-MATIC SYSTEMS, CHENNAI

VICTIM OF TOYOTA LIVA
Dec 27, 2012 08:47 PM 64522 Views

Overall Experience We Purchased Toyota Etios Liva last year during Diwali and it was maintained only with the dealer from the beginning. No additional extra fittings were deployed in the car other than what the dealer provided for extra cost at the time of purchase. But before this year Diwali, the car burnt automatically (on a rainy day midnight 11.30 PM) while it was parked in my house porch in side locked gates. Since it was first year itself, we will get the basic cost from the insurance. But the arrogant Toyota Kirloskar Motor management is giving a sterio  type reply that their vehicle is not having any fault, that too when TOYOTA Japan had withdrawn about 2.8 Million cars worldwide.

The way they are repeatedly replying seems as such we ourself set fire to our own brand new car (it has hardly run about 2000 kms). The blunder what I did was chossing Toyota car. As a middle class person, even if I have hired vehicle to travel these 2000 odd kilometers, I would not have spent more than one tenth of this lost amount (almost more that two lakhs I lost just buying Toyota Etios car). Even as I am using Toyota (Japanese) car for the past more than 18 years, my sincere advise to those who wants to buy a new car, not to buy Toyota cars in India, even though it's a Japanese tied-up brand of car.

You will not get proper response & responsibilities from the local manufacturer, TKM. This is my experience, even after appealing directly to their CEO. DUE TO THE WORST EXPERIENCE WITH TOYOTA INDIA, I REQUEST FELLOW CUSTOMERS NOT TO CHOOSE TOTYOTA ETIOS LIVA - BETTER GO FOR SOME OTHER BRAND.

Since I am having photos & other documents in .pdf files, I could not able to upload the photos & other documents related as prrof.

Liva only if you cannot fit inside the i10
Sep 13, 2012 05:45 PM 47600 Views

I needed a car mainly for ferrying kids to school, only about 2km per day, so I did not look at diesel. I was looking for sensible VFM car for boring city drives only. My budget was 5-6 lakhs and the shortlist was i10(automatic, for spouse), new Swift, Liva V, and Indica Vista.

Tata was ruled out by many stories of niggling trouble and bad service. Swift was ruled out because of crammed interiors, and long waiting time. I was all but decided on i10(AT) which was about exactly matched in price with the Liva V. Unfortunately, we have two six feet people in the family. If I adjusted the i10 driver seat to be comfortable, no adult could sit behind. Also, the i10 is a strictly four-adult car. Otherwise, the i10 wins easily over the Liva: stronger engine, much nicer throttle and clutch control, more compact in both width and length by a few inches, which makes all the difference in a city. If you will carry people under 5 feet 9 inches, don't even think about the Liva, just go for the i10, which is clearly destined to be the next Swift.

Within the Liva family, V is a no-brainer for the 5-6 lakh budget segment. All that the VX gives you is a DVD player and some eye-candy trim(which easily hits bumps, by the way, lucky I did not get a VX) and a garish red and black interior. V is where you want to stop.

The Liva is an ok car, but only just ok. It is definitely not a "real" Toyota-class car, and not good value for money. I bought it purely because of my height requirements.

No one seems to have pointed out the major problem with the ECU and electronic throttle control. Toyota is infamous for weird drive-by-wire throttle(accelerator) and this is a problem on the petrol Liva. Brake crisply and downshift from 2 to 1 as you are entering a parking lot. 20-40 seconds later(perhaps as you are carefully easing into a slot) the engine suddenly surges by 200-300 rpm without any driver action. You need to be quick with the brake at this moment to prevent 1-2 feet of unintended travel. I experienced this with two different test drive cars as well as my own, so it is not an individual unit fault. I asked Toyota about this but they are completely silent.

https://autosafety.org/lawmaker-toyota-knew-electronic-defects

https://users.ece.cmu.edu/~raj/toyota.html

https://youtube.com/watch?v=Fn_cDN56Oy8

I have never experienced the rpm surge problem in any other car I have driven: Swift, WagonR, i10, or Santro.

In general the car feels quite underpowered. Turn into a 10 degree upslope on 2nd gear and floor the gas pedal. The car will not accelerate  at all but hold even speed. On level ground, downshift to 2 or 1 well within rev range and release the clutch gently, and you can still feel the engine judder and readjust-no idea why.

The car has been babied since it was bought, no rough driving, no abuse. Even so, the lever of the handbrake has come loose(moves around and rattles) when the handbrake is not engaged. It is ok when engaged.

I have heard a lot about how soft and smooth the gear is. Not true. Felt about the same as a WagonR or Estillo to begin with. After about a month, 1st gear is suddenly very difficult to engage unless at dead stop. Again, absolutely no abuse or gear grinding happened. Always driven very gently.  Clutch and gear feel is ok in general, and the pickup in first gear is good, but definitely the experience is not as nice or reassuring as the i10(manual).

Rain water collects below the headlamps, in a gap between the headlamp acrylic and the painted body below. This dirty water naturally turns brown, which looks very ugly below a 2-month old headlamp.

Mileage is about 13 km/l stop-and-go, hardly any AC use, so that's fairly reasonable. Will improve as the engine settles.

I keep seeing relatively inconsequential comments about cheap plastic interiors or NVH(as if you are driving in silent wilderness!). But I have not seen anyone report the more important issues above.

In summary, the Liva is a very decent option compared to moving into the sedan segment. I would claim the Liva is overall a better built car than the new Swift. But it surely loses to i10, unless you are too tall to fit into the i10. However, if you expect real Toyota build quality in a Liva, you will be disappointed.

Spacious Liva...
Jul 23, 2012 03:12 PM 43725 Views

My review is based on the test drive of the vehicle. I got the chance to test drive Toyota Etios Liva, I can comment on the performance and the features of the car, the owners can throw light on the ownership of the car. The first impression is awesome, the car feels strong while you are on driver seat. You feel safe. I drove,

Plus:

1) Decent interiors, spacious inside. Easy sitting for 3 person on back row.

2) Storage glove box has good capacity, special feature of cooling is good for keeping drinking water bottles to get chilled water on drive.

3) Driving is comfortable, feels like driving a sedan.

4) Audio control is available on steering for the higher version.

5) Other features like tilting steering EPS, ABS and airbags are available. (I wish airbags, ABS to be standardized for all cars for safety, but cost is a constraint)

6) Body is strong and feels sturdy.

Minus:

1) The dash board quality does not look great, feels low on quality

2) The auto climate control feature is absent in the highest version of Liva is surprising.

3) The power feels compromised in Liva, I found it good on highway but city driving was not that great. The continuous stop and accelerate in traffic is jerky and not smooth.

The car is good for family for spacious long drive, but I think the highest version doesn’t offer much in terms of feature. You can think of buying a lower version of this car. Mileage as per the sales person will come to around 14km. I feel after 5000 km it will give around 13-14km, in city driving conditions. I drove the car in Chennai.

Overall, driving a Toyota badge will make you feel good.

The best car to drive
Jun 12, 2012 05:40 PM 43177 Views

Toyota Etios Liva, when I say the best car to drive, it's because I had a continues 1250 kms of Drive my place, and I really enjoyed the drive. The seating has been made very comfort for both Drivers and for Passengers, Interior is good and has enough space for every one to relax. Toyota must have copied the outer shape from other cars, and hence I don't like the outer shape of the car it could have been more better.

I never felt strained after so long drive as the Acc, clutch and the gear system is very smoothly designed.

Everyone must take a test drive and should experience the Toyota Etios Liva's Drive. As always Toyota engines are more reliable and less fuel consuming engines and you can also get low maintenance for these cars.

Etios Liva petrol a poor car
Apr 22, 2012 10:06 PM 30282 Views

On Dec 2011 we make a decision to buy ETIOS Liva petrol because of trust in Toyota brand for mileage and quality. But we were disappointed by the mileage of the vehicle on actual condition. It was 10-11 km/l on GGN city roads. while other equivalent brands give 14-15 km/l. Also the cabin shielding is very poor. You can be bothered by significant level of noise in the cabin from the suspension thud sound and external noise.

while there are many points+ve and -ve, which are available in similar reviews, which I am not repeating here and putting only two points(mileage and cabin shielding) which disappointed us badly.

In conclusion we will not recommend ETIOS Liva petrol as it did not carry true Toyota value.

Toyota Etios Liva Diesel
Mar 19, 2012 11:01 PM 52537 Views

I had decided to buy a diesel hatchback. The requirements were good fuel efficiency, good space, ABS, comfortable ride in city and on long drives. Wanted the car delivered before December 2011.

Below was the selection process

1) I20 lost as it was highly priced and ABS was available only in the top end

2) Swift lost on leg space for the back row and the long waiting period

3) Liked the Indica Vista, but my wife didnt want to go with the Tata brand

4) Ford Figo was one of the choice in my mind

Was planning for a few more cars but couldnt take a test drive

Toyota had only recently launched the Liva Diesel and all I could find were auto reviews and no user comments. However as the toyota showroom was less than a KM from my home, went there to take a test drive. First thing about Toyota is that I was received well by the sales person. Exterior loos of the Liva caught my eye. With ABS available as standard and the amount of space in the back seat I decided to take a test drive and ended up booking the car on the same day. The waiting period was told as 30 days which I managed to get down to 20 days. Next day got a call saying that my car was available and on full payment can get the car within a week. Finally got my car just 8 days after booking.

Things I liked.

1) Car is very easy to handle in city and can pull over speed breakers in 2nd gear.

2) The engine response is to my liking. I am more of a sedate driver. Dont expect this car to give response like a Swift. Liva does well with patient driving.

3) Fuel efficiency is above 20KMPL in city with AC on for 50% of the time

4) Enough space in back seat to comfortably seat 3 people.

5) The response of the sales people at the dealership. - However they just didnt give any freebies:(

Things I didnt like.

1) The car hits bumps if you are not careful. This can be avoided with careful driving but still you miss a few in city driving especially with five people. This could be improved

2) Lack of variants in Diesel. Not sure why Toyota has restricted the Diesel to just 1 variant and the optional safety package. Tachometer is missed in Diesel as the available variant does not have one

3) Interior looks. The plastic quality is good and not bad as told in most reviews, However it is the colour and the finish that makes it look bad. Spent 20K to change the interiors to my liking. Picture is attached.

Things good to have but missed.

1) Driver seat height adjustment

2) Electric OVRM - This is not available even in the top end petrol variants

3) Rear wiper and defogger - available in higher petrol variants

4) The NVH levels could be reduced though this is tolerable

5) Interior looks could be enhanced so that the cost cutting is not so obvious. The Interiors looks are not on par with other competitors.

6) Stereo is not available as standard and you have to buy the antenna too

On the whole the Liva Diesel is an excellent hatchback and you will love this one as a family car. I am completely happy with my decision on buying this car and so is my family. However if interior functions and a race car like performance is required then Liva is not the car for you.

As a word of advice, take test drives of the various options available in the market and you will know the car that matches your style.

Still Disappointed with Etios Liva Diesel(22000km)
Mar 02, 2012 07:58 PM 22890 Views

Selection

wanted a diesel car which should be.

very driveable(my definition to this word is without frequent gear changes and should be able to negotiate most speed breakers in 2nd gear) in city.

should have ABS and Airbags. So I wanted a topend model in any car that I select.

composed highway drive(at 90-110kmph).as I travel almost 1500kms per month on highway.

Good mileage and ride quality(I doubt whether my Liva met ride quality req).

Shortlisting and Delivery:

It was easy for me as most of the models are out of my budget:) my budget was 6.5 to 7 at max

I20/POLO/PUNTO/MICRA/PULSE/SWIFT - topend models are out of my budget more than 7.5L

vista - not considered for its build quality(may be should have considered this too after looking at LIVA's average build quality)

Beat - I liked everything apart from sapce

LIVA - in my budget and good proven D4D engine and spacious I alomost selected Chevy beat.as it had everything I wanted and most importantly it is the cheapest of all(6.5L onroad hyd LT with OPTION pack).I must say Beat's driveability and ride quality is excellent. Finally my wife's suggestion arrived. She wanted a "spacious" car.All of a sudden by selection is gone.Beat has very less rear seat space.no thigh support at all.

Now I left with only one option LIVA as vista is out of my mind.without lot of thinking or research I selected LIVA by trusting T-brand

Delivery was smooth as expected from Harsha Toyota, Hyderabad.they did nothing wrong here.So now did I get what I wanted?

Initial observations

pros: Very driveable in city.spacious.three guys can perfectly fit into back seat

good progressive braking(personally I dont like swift/beat sudden baking mainly at lower speeds)

cons: Very average build(way below expectations) finishing.

Look at dash and other interior corners for 10 mins.u will come to know I am right.Am disappointed with Toyota in this regard.

Car doors looks very light.not sure how safe is it.Its lightness is evident from its weight of 980kgs(smaller beat weighs nearly 1100kgs).

When I close the back doors it makes lot of noise.reminds my 4 year old 800.I can give u hell lot of examples that its not built well.bad insulation(high NVH).

u will hear hell lot of tyre and engine noise from inside even when you are on good road with AC on.On bad roads it gets worst.i could not believe that 10days old car rattles like this.

not very smooth gear shifts(hoping it will improve after first service)very soft front suspension.

front suspension jumps and gives weird sound at small sharp speed brakers at low speeds.

low ground clearance. In paper it might look same as other(173 mm).My car hit the ground 4 times in first 3 days.nothing major though:)

costly spares(4 chrome finish rings for AC vents costs 1500 antenna costs 1800, got antenna installed for 300 outside) Missing features like(alloys/autodown power windows/fog lamps/boot lamp)

In-built speakers sound quality is below average.

Mileage and performance:performance is good if u shift gears correctly to stay in turbo zone.If u dont it struggles. To stay in turbo jone the gear shift speeds are.

1st to 2nd at 10kmph

2nd to 3rd at 25-30 kmph

3rd to 4th at 40-45 kmph

4th to 5th at 60 kmph

Every gear pulls well from even lower speeds than mentioned above but pulls slowly.I tried to pull from 50 kmph in 5th but it took lot of time(5-8 secs to get past 60kmph).

Weekend I went to Kurnool from Hyderabad(230+ 230)Full tank to full tank mileage 20KMPL with 95% AC on(but AC at min level).480 kms(460 on highway+ 20 in city) with 24 litres of diesel.

hoping it to be improved another 2kmpl after first service.Highway driving is mostly at 90-100 kmph, occasionally touched 110-120.engine is happy at 110kmph. I tried to push it further but it looked stressed.Gear shifts are as specified above to keep it in toubo zone.

Other observations: Antenna wont come as standard.and u must buy it from showroom.its not available in open market.

Need to leave engine idle for 2-3 minutes to allow turbo changer to get cool down(after long drives, not required for city driving though).is it the case with all the diesel engines?

Service intervals are 10k, where as its 5k for beat.

Final verdict: Its early to say but I am already feeling that should have gone for beat:(

Update after 20K service:

No major problems faced.once driven continuously for 10 hours without any problem.

service experience was good.first service costs 50, second(10k) and third(20k) service costs 1850 each.

Mileage in city with very little trafic 22kmpl, on highway 24kmpl with 40% of the time AC on.

Best mileage got: 25 kmpl

Worst mileage: 17.5kmpl(on bad roads 10 hours without engine off, fully loaded and 1 hour of idling 100% AC)

Top Speed achieved: 140 kmph

Avg speed on highway: 100 kmph

Problems: Engine noise, bad interior quality, Interior rattling, front suspension noise, there is no power in 1st and 2nd gear.will struggle to get past 40kmph if car is fully loaded.

I still stand by my initial review of my car.Nothing really great about this car apart from reliable engine and good mileage.I am still disappointed with toyota.

Very good value for money.
Jan 29, 2012 01:43 PM 15768 Views

I bought Etios Liva Petrol in Oct'2011. It's been 3000km so far. The car is too good in terms of all parameters. I drive in city 60% in traffic and 40% on highway. I have read many reviews about mileage. Too my surprise, the mileage in my case is exceeding 16km/l. This makes me too satisfied.

Interiors - Very spacious and elegant.

exterior - lovely. a smiling toyota badge.

comfort while drive - impressive, smooth gear box etc

Overall it plays a tough competitor to swift. But, new Maruti is expensive than Liva.

Lucky my swift booking took long time ?!?!
Dec 24, 2011 08:15 PM 17648 Views

I went for booking zdi last october. Thought I will receive jan 2012. But on tracking them they said we will receive it only by march. But we thought why to hang with maruti and we will look for something else. What came to our mind immediately were polo and liva.

We went to the vw showroom to look at polo. The salesperson was particular about the quality of the built and he avoided to tell good things about the engine inspite of me telling that I hav booked swift zdi. Next we went to toyota and the salespersons response was too good. Unfortunately we didnt get a td vehicle on that sunday.

They promised to send home the next morning and we took a drive in a bumpy road.response was good from my wife and mother , they had scratched under the chasis of my friend's figo on that same road.

We booked a liva diesel (red) GD from harsha toyota chennai. Lucky that we got it in 4 days and got it delivered on 20 dec 2011 inspite of booking on 16th december 2011. My last few days experience with liva has been excellent.

The engine power is enormous and accelerator response is too good. No lag during acceleration and is linear. Brakes are also good and not embarrassing. Legroom is so nice and my mom loves it a lot. Looks of it in the exterior and ground clearance took the heart of my wife. My suggestion to those who read my review will be:

Car good value for money and you will get a sedan quality for price of hatchback.(stolen words!!). Boot space sufficient (250 ltrs) usable than swift zdi. Think over it.

Have a great experience. Jus try it.

Great city car with great mileage and spacing
Dec 02, 2011 02:43 PM 15080 Views

I brought the Etios Liva Petrol(V variant) two months back. The considerations I made were 1)Good fuel economy 2) Interiors Spacing 3)Good resale value being the Toyota brand 4) Easy availability of parts(my earlier car was Opel Corsa whose part replacement was a pain due to it being a phased-out version of GM).

Of all these counts, Liva lives well upto expectations for most. The mileage initially was 15 kmpl(AC off). But after the first service and 1200 km later I could peak upto 18.45 kmpl(it is what company claimed). You can rely on for 17-18 kmpl mileage

Ample Interior spacing, Boot space(290 liters) and legroom comfort are quite a value for money in its segment. Also most importantly the ground clearance is really good (170 mm) as many cars in the segment lack this.Suspension is good to absorb small bumps and shocks.

Now on the cons part of it

1)The dashboard interior could have been better(especially for G or G(sp) version it looks unattractive). The interior aesthetics needs improvement

2)For music system in my V variant, I had to purchase USB separately, which could have been a part of it.

3) On highway drive, sometimes after braking on 3rd/4th gear, I found that the car is way sluggish on accelerating again(this wasn't the case with my corsa).

Conclusion:- A great car as far as mileage and spacing is concerned. Good idea to buy it if that is your consideration

Its exactly a Live 2morrow today: Liva Diesel
Nov 30, 2011 11:22 AM 15968 Views

I owned Liva Diesel month back and had 4200+ kms driven. Very very much satisfied with decision(though  being in dial-ma for a month till car was actually delivered to me, since booking was done based on reviews only). These 4200+ kms constitute of 650km(each side) at a stretch drive(to home town) with absolutely no fatigue. Suspension is well tuned, leading to tired free driving & comfort to co-passengers. Gear to speed ratio is low enough so that frequent gear shifts are not required during city drive(Getting 24+ kmpl(tank full to tank full) mileage with AC wherever required). Performance is good while AC is on.

All 3 passengers at back seat are equally comfortable, since height of center bump is very low compared to other cars in segment, leg space is ample(you will feel like resting at home). Road visibility is good, no blind spots.

Dash board look-wise is not that much flashy compared to other cars in segment but space-wise it is good. Visibility of centrally mounted gauges is good(since its is slightly tilted toward driver).

Concerns:

  • Reverse light at one side only, though arrangement is available on both sides.

  • Back door is light so have to close it with bit force, otherwise it may produce rattling sound on uneven roads.

Test Drive review
Nov 29, 2011 12:17 PM 12143 Views

I tested Liva Petrol last Sunday. The external look is very good. I drove the car about 8 KMs and observed

Pros:

  1. Enough space for the rear passengers

  2. Steering is quite sturdy but easy to handle.- You feel safe( contrary to i20)

  3. Smooth ride- Reasonably food shocker even in the rain battered Chennai road

  4. Centrally mounted gauges - Easy to read

  5. Adequate boot space

Cons

  1. High level road noise inside cabin

  2. Indicators in the lower side of the gauges are difficult to read

  3. Very poor fabric on the seats

  4. Plastics and AC controls are very poor - reminded me of my 15 year old Maruti.

  5. Wires visible under the body(near the wheels)

Overall impression:

Toyota performance with Maruti looks. If you care only for peformance you can as well buy Maruti at much lesser price.

Toyota damaged their brand with Liva

A Star is Born - Liva Diesel.
Sep 26, 2011 09:33 PM 19314 Views

Hello friends, It is indeed a privilege to share my views with you about my latest test drive. This time around, it is a car which I had been waiting for. Patiently for quite a while.  Well… here it is.

Toyota - The name itself spells class and reliability. Period.

Many people buy and sell many cars during their lifetime. They are lucky indeed. However just for a second, if you imagine that you have a choice of owning only ONE car OR if you wish me word it differently, only one last car before you say … BYE then which car would it be ?

Financially the middle (aspiration) class of people always like to dream and bite off a little more than they can chew.  Well….my long search after reading numerous views and reviews on TV as well as in special Auto magazines and other publications, urged me in a particular direction.

I was invited for a test drive from a nearby friendly Toyota dealer’s representative. I accepted and went on a balmy Sunday morning (less traffic) for my quick assessment of the car in question – THE TOYOTA ETIOS LIVA DIESEL.  Quite a long name, so I shall call it Liva diesel.

I was greeted warmly and asked to be seated in the lounge. Within a few minutes a charming young lady representative handed me the keys to a spanking new aquamarine blue Liva Diesel waiting just outside the showroom. She accompanied me as my co-passenger.

The first job at hand was to engage reverse gear. A quick glance at the gear knob showed that this was an unusual placement, top left, near first gear on the otherwise conventional H pattern.  It reminded me of the very early models of the VW Golf, which sported a similar pattern.  Being used to the conventional pattern of reverse (next to my left thigh) the Liva's pattern involved moving the shift lever in a diagonally opposite direction. With a little assistance from my passenger, I was soon on the main road and ready to move.

The first gear engaged without a fuss with a crisp short throw and the car started creeping along at a slow pace, quite effortlessly.  The manner in which it did this, hinted that this car would be a `natural' in congested city traffic.   However the road in front of me beckoned and I gave it a short burst of acceleration. The car then responded to the `Fangio' in me & started to gain pace rather rapidly (giving me quite a thrill) and as the smooth engine moved up the gears, I got the feeling that I was seated on a cloud which was being whisked away at a very rapid rate. I then took a quick left and the undulations of the road surface became only a distant rumble and did not affect the composure of the car but infact instilled greater confidence with each passing km.

As I felt increasingly at home in my spacious cabin, the desire to sample as much of the feel as I could of the vehicle before my test ride ended, spurred me on to rev the motor even further. The diesel engine was heard very gently in the beginning and then a little more but nothing which could be termed as bothersome. In fact, it reminded (a little) of my two stroke RX-100 motorcycle which gives me an encouraging audio note, each time I accelerate. In fact this move actually makes us more in tune with what is happening under the hood and involves you more in the ride and makes you part of the experience instead of aloof from it. If the extra noise is viewed correctly, (should be the only music you need) & it should be a positive character trait which will charm the driving enthusiast in you. In my motorcycle it was the exhaust note, here it is the engine note doing the same job.

A few minutes later the showroom was back in sight and we moved into the parking lot and alighted. The look under the hood was meticulous, neat and tidy. The real heartbeat with the bold capital letters “ D-4D “ starred back at me from the engine bay. This motor was responsible for the happy feeling I had in my heart and the smile which was on my face.

Now later on recollection, I felt that this car had a beautiful smooth character and a capability which will urge you to undertake long distances without even a second thought. The mile munching capability is written large into the DNA of this vehicle. It is something intangible but which was conveyed to me in the first ride itself.

Before I set off on my ride, I had shortlisted at least two other vehicles, namely the Beat diesel and the Honda Brio. However the deep seated contentment which I derived from my test ride of the Liva diesel, left very little to be desired and told me just one thing. My search had ended. I had met my match. Amen.

I asked to see some other colors and was promptly whisked to an underground garage where some delivery cars had been housed. That is where I saw an enchanting black as well as a pristine white which truly impressed me a lot. Here was a showroom which is classy and has something for everybody.

The Mumbai individual price list was given to me showing 6.51 as on road. However I was quickly told of the 1.5 to 2 % addition which was on the cards. The airbags package would cost 35K more, the music centre would cost 11.5K more, the two tone dash with leatherette seat covers and door cards and faux wood trimmings on the steering wheel and window switches would cost 35K extra. If I needed it at all. The only trim available was the GD version which came equipped with ABS and EBD as standard. Very sensible indeed considering the rate of acceleration which can land a rookie in trouble.

Booking amount is 50K and as soon as I work out my finances, I sure would like to be the owner of this fine vehicle.  No doubt about it at all.
