Tata Marina Reviews

Go for an Hyundai/ford fusion
Feb 11, 2006 11:22 PM 13301 Views

Tata marina..it seemed like the best car I could go for in just over 5 lakhs...but it turned out to be quite a disappointment... I bought the car and took it for a long drive...guess what, the fan used to cool the engine ( which by the way gets hot very easily) started to make a very bad noise. It sounded as if someone was digging roads with a JCP. I and my family were very scared. To add to trouble, it didnt happen always. It took us lot of effort and time to make the sales guys realize when my car made that loud noise. After lot of grilling we realized that it was the fan, which is manufactured by Bharat Gear and conviniently put in a Tata car, which was broken .. outsourcing at work...whatever ..may be outsourcing has its own benefits but as customers we buy the car because it has the TATA label .. not because it has BHARAT gear parts in it .. it was a very bad experience .. I got the fan replaced .. day after the car started making rattling noice from the left .. got it checked and found the power window glass was making the noise .. another creeking sound from the fibre behind the back seats .. drove me crazy .. add to it .. gears are not smooth .. when you change the gear, gear stick shifts noticeably beforing settling down...i dont know why, but I started to feel, I should have not gone for an indian car because it was indian...when you are paying money as customers, go only for quality..go for a hyundia accent .. for ford fusion ..

Excellent car, terrible service
Jan 06, 2006 04:01 PM 7863 Views

I was a very satisfied owner of a Maruti Omni for 5 years, having driven it for more than 54000 kms in Bangalore and Hyderabad. I wanted to move up to a bigger car as the lack of an AC was getting unbearable, but all the cars in the market were around the 6-8 lac price mark, and did not offer much in terms of space [both leg space and luggage space].

I wondered if the Tata Indica would be suitable and I walked into the Concorde Motors showroom in Bangalore in April 2005 to have a first look. The new red color and styling of V2 was pretty good. Standing next to the Indica was a silver Tata Marina and my wife casually asked the price of this vehicle. I was surprised that it was only Rs. 5.5 lacs on road, [that too the top end petrol version] just 1 lac more than the Indica! [I had first seen the Marina in Hyderabad in 2004 when it was launched, but the light blue color was a put-off and rear end design looked ugly to me and it dropped out of my consideration set]. We double checked that the price was just this much!

The next step was to take a test drive and I drove both the diesel and petrol versions. I could not make out the difference, until I was told! Both the cars were so silent and free of any vibration that one expects from a diesel vehicle. The pick-up of the diesel vehicle in the first two gears was a bit sluggish though, because of which I decided to buy the petrol version.

Now the drama of Concorde Motors unfolds...

I wanted a silver petrol Euro III Marina, and the dealer did not have one in stock. Fine, but then the salesperson tried hard to convince me to buy the Euro II version as they had stocks, even explaining to me that there is no difference between the 2 versions!!

I said that I can wait for the new car to come from Pune and was told it would take max 10 days. Accordingly, I arranged for the car loan, paid the booking amount, sold off my Maruti Omni and waited. And waited.... and waited. Commuted to office by auto, even. End May I got news of the car's arrival, after speaking to Pune office, and creating a lot of unpleasant noise.

26th of May. I am supposed to take delivery at 6 pm, so I arrive at Concorde with my wife and young son, who is really excited. We wait as the car has gone for PDI. And wait, and wait... It begins to rain badly. At 9 pm we get to see the car, finally.

Its wet and pouring, so we all quickly sign the papers and drive out the showroom. My son's tired and fed up by now, and disappointed that the car does not have a ribbon tied around it. The rain has made the car all dirty.

We drive to the nearest petrol bunk and tank up as there is no petrol. Surprisingly, the fuel gauge shows zero. I call up and inform the showroom and am told to come tomorrow.

Believe it or not, it takes me more than 7 visits and 6 months to get the faulty fuel gauge changed. Complaints are made to Murali, Arul Prakash and Venkat of Concorde. I become a familiar sight at the service bay. Averaging one visit a month for a brand new car! They just must be thick-headed to spend so much time and energy behind one spare part costing Rs 500, checking up, diagnosing, discussing, calling VDO, job cards, adjustments, rechecks. I even offered to pay for it myself. ''No sir, its under warranty'', I am told. Any much longer, it would be post-warranty.

Just to compare, I would not have made more than 5 visits to a Maruti service station in 5 years.

Next challenge at Concorde... getting a free service done. I get a shock when told that to get a free service appointment would take 2 weeks. When I finally come over for the service after 2 weeks, I am told that due to shortage of manpower, I will get the car after 3 days. Wow, and spend my one precious weekend travelling in autos? No way. I reschedule the appointment.

This repeats 2 more times. Each time I am told that the car will be kept for 1-2 days. I am adamant that the car be returned the same day, considering that the service should not take more than 2 hours. When the service is finally done, the car has exceeded the due distance by 2500 kms, and is almost due for the next service as per the car manual! The car is not washed even as their water pump has gone bad. I take home a dirty muddy car after first service at 9.15 pm.

I shudder to think that I will have to go through this three times more.

A great example of how a perfectly good brand is raped by its dealer. Not once, but over and over again.

Anyway, lets talk about the good part. The car itself is a lovely experience to drive. Initially, compared to a Maruti, it felt like handling a massive ship on the road, but after a week I began to get a hang of things. Its absolutely soundless inside the cabin with the windows rolled up [a real necessity in noisy Bangalore traffic] and handles potholes and humps at high speeds very well [again ideal for Bangalore – the pothole capital of India].

The space inside is luxurious, I am 6’ 2” and can actually stretch out my legs while driving, and the person in the rear seat too has enough space. Lots of luggage space is a blessing on long drives.

I have covered more than 10000 kms in 7 months that includes several long drives – to Mysore, Mangalore, Calicut, Yercaud, Coorg – and I have not faced any problem. Top speed so far driven is 125 kmph on the Coimbatore bypass highway. I have got a mileage of close to 14 kmpl on the highway and can manage to squeeze out 11-12 kmpl in the city.

The ultimate compliment for Tata Motors, is when people ask me “is that an Innova?”, or, “I did not know Tata could make cars”…

If only Tata Motors knew how to distinguish between truck drivers, BPO taxi drivers and salaried SEC A1 customers like me.

Good at Long Rides & Rally a Family Car. Very Spacious & Comfortable rides & more Rides. My family also like this car very much & they are very happy travelling in this new car. Only minus is that it drinks petrol like water. It Does 9kmpl in City & Around 10-11kmpl on H'ways. But I am happy with the vehicle & suggest for this mid size car to all. Okay I think I had given enough review of this car, But its worth the monie spent on the same. hope you all will like it & send me the reverts on my review.

Tata Marina - The Big one !
Oct 14, 2005 12:14 AM 4403 Views

Tata Marina is an enlongated version of Tata Indica...like Tata Indica, its equally spacious and has better room for storage. But its sale is not as good as Indica...because of price...but looks are better! Performace is alonst the same...no difference when you drive in city but its more difficult to cut and park. All in all, I rate this care better than lndica on Looks and Space but a faliure in comparison to price, usability (in city).

Its a mixed breed between looks of Tata Safari and Tata Indica...but surely cannot win over Safari...which is the best in its category.

The shape is smooth but the its not my type of car...

People of age group between 23-45 will look decent in these types of vehicle generally, but its not a car to be owned by ladies. Hatchback to Hunchback...and everything in between

(REVIEWED: APRIL 05/ PUBLISHED: OCT '05)

The Estate car market has been given a new lease of life with the arrival of the much awaited Indigo Marina from TELCO. With the sales figure of the Marina going slow but steady, Tata can expect its dealers to be a tad happier than before. Now, for my review...

IN.DI.GO MA.RI.NO would have been a ‘friendlier’ name for the new estate from TELCO, which is a much pampered sibling of the ubiquitous Indica. Drawing along the same bloodline (read engine) as its hatchback and sedan siblings with the only difference being a turbocharger and a new intercooler (for the diesel BSIII variants), the Marina’s performance is pushed to a happy 70 bhp@4500 revs and a torquey 13.5 kgm@2500 revs! Woooh...that’s something unheard of in a diesel of this ilk, which is worthy of being compared to the big, more expensive and torpid Lancer Diesel. Mitsubishi aficionados, please excuse.

That said, the new estate from TELCO sure looks like a true VFM offering as compared to its contenders from FIAT, MU and GM Stables. Tata's smart positioning coupled with the just-the-right pricing of the Marina is sure to lure customers.

Killer Looks or Killed Looks?

One look at the Marina and you will be disappointed with the swooping, disproportionate detailing of the backend. The design is old school and looks like a modified Indica - hatchback to hunchback as I would put it! However, the staid stance of the Marina is inimitably TATA and dwarfs almost all the modern estates. This rather quirky styling takes some time getting used to.

I wonder why car manufacturers spend oodles on concepts only to knock them down when they get it to production. When Tata can design cars like the Xover (the crossover concept unveiled at the Geneva auto show which is expected to be here in a while has some amazing detailing that give the likes of Innova a run for their money!) why not divert a fraction of their attention to a little design detail here and there that could make the Marina more appealing?! Sad but true; we have to live with the fact that its a car made for- by- and of- the Indians unless of course if it is going to set sail to the European market like the lucky little Rover-badged Indica.

Beautiful Inside

While the exterior tailend appears shoddy and there is nothing to write home about, the interiors are refreshingly new with a little makeover on the plastics that seem to be slightly improved over the Indica. The clocks are embellished with chrome and look sporty yet classy especially with elegant black dials as opposed to the used and abused white ones that you'll find in the petrol variants. The instrument panel is aptly designed with tell-tale lamps and digital trip- and odometers for easy readability and keeping track on your mileage.

Passenger comfortis nothing new - only slightly improved over the Indica, the rear seats don't recline but have a comfy and well designed ''waterfall type'' headrests that should hold your head in good stead. The fabric used on seat covers are substandard and apparently a cheap compromise on the interiors.

As for the usability and user-friendliness of the car, the cubbyholes are present at the right places just like in the Indica, the sunglass holder and the twin power sockets at the front and rear are fine examples of thoughtful design. Moreover, the luggage retention nets, retractable luggage covers and an overhead shelf at the rear are very user-friendly and well thought out.

Talking about space, the leg room is pretty acceptable for all the 5 passengers but be sure not to put that roly-poly upfront. The boot space is humongous and with the parcel shelves fully retracted or removed allows you to shove in a mountain bike along with the rest of your paraphernalia or maybe even throw in a full grown Labrador for a good measure! Now, isn't that a huge PLUS over the plain Jane Indigo.

A powerful diesel car...for a change

Obviously, I am not going to compare this poor little estate wannabe with the Skoda Octavia or Accent Viva CRDI.

The engine - a 1.4L indirectly injected turbo diesel with intercooler (on BS III models) - is punchy and peppy to drive around town. The power steering is quite responsive and predictable through the 4-spoke leather wrapped wheel which has a solid, good-to-hold feel. The actual power can be felt when the turbo kicks in (which happens rather quickly or so it felt) and the car thrusts forward without a lag.

If you manage to sit inside oblivious of the engine noise and vibration (with the windows rolled up, of course), the car actually would feel like a petrol one :)

The AC fills up the cabin faster than expected and you could feel the sudden sluggishness that takes over while the compressor is running. Can't help it - it’s always a trade-off here!

The ride height is decent enough with a splendid view ahead. The handling is like a cheesecake even on patchy roads, thanks to the independent suspension and the lofty 14'' 175/65 radials. Tubeless tyres and alloy wheels are only optional and the TATA branded alloys are overpriced at 17k, after exchange! Even the top end LX and GLX don't come with a music system and have to be retrofitted - too bad!

I haven't taken the Marina on a long spin yet and cannot ascertain its real capabilities or what its worth. I'll do that on Bangalore's ring roads sometime soon. But keep in mind, the unladen weight of the car is just 1.1 ton for the diesel which should translate to better performance with the ''Autocar'' tested top speed of 157 kmph.

Powerful yet Economical

The fuel efficiency is supposed to be one of the best in this segment and as per the reviews in popular motoring mags; it should return at least a dozen kilometers to a litre with the AC on in the city and at least 16kms on the highway. Considering that the fuel prices are shooting up by the day, it would be a sensible decision to settle for the diesel variant.

Is it Safe?

Safety, my friends, still come at a premium here and those complex-sounding acronyms like ABS, EBD, and airbags are only heard of in the Rs.10 L+ segment cars (except Santro, Getz, Wagon R & the recently unveiled Swift). It’s still nascent in the Indian car market and the aam junta wouldn't be bothered too much about how safe the car is - all it has to be is wallet-friendly. I, for one, believe that safety is often overstated as it is very subjective and totally dependant on how sensible a driver you are. If you agree, it is impractical in India to drive around comfortably beyond 120 kmph and if you revel beyond that you're inviting trouble. Believe me; if you drive sensibly you don't need those ABSs and airbags! Those are little nice-to-haves and we'll think about that when there comes a rule to make them as standard fitment on all cars.

Coming back to the Marina - yes, the crumple zone is ample, has a collapsible steering column, ELR (emergency locking retractor) type seat belts for all passengers, impact beams on all four sides and all those common features that offer you basic protection and are designed as per the European safety specs.

What's your take?

  • Thoughtful interiors and loads of space make it an excellent utility vehicle.

  • Frugal drinking habits of the engine and a reasonable power-to-weight.

  • Go-anywhere suspension cushioned by lofty 14” radials enhances the ride comfort making the Marina an all rounder in its class.

  • Just-the-right pricing coupled with discounts and goodies from the dealer make the Marina an exceptional VFM car.

Sterling Gold or dark blue car colors are fantastic and Tata has stoped production in these two colors they will be available in premium range.

Looks of the car are fantastic, it's different and good to eyes from regular cars.

The concept is catching fast in India too.

Interiors are good compared to Indica or Indigo, Upper shelf tray and back shelf are of real use for family travel and that steals the show compare to other cars.

If required two people can comfartabley sit in back dicky. If back seat is folded it gives a good space for carriage also.

Dast panel is also ergonomicaly good compared to other Indian cars.

Car is very good for driving comfort. Petrol car Can compare with Hond City's smoothness, but there is a problem with Fuel pump of petrol version due to which afdter using for few days while driving you don't get smooth power output. There where only Tata's quality is lacking compare with foreign technology.

Good Mileage: 14.5 average in city and outside with AC on off.

Hey man

i bought this car last year immediately after its launch . so by then I had done no research bout it . I was going for the esteem diesel version but unavailbility was a big problem .so when I thought I must have a car which is not common and which wud be easy on the pocket .i went to the tata showrooom to see the indigo ls (diesel) but what I found was a new car stnading just for me .

i bought the indigo marina the very same day . I neither bothered to sit in the car before purchasing it.

now let me tell you what the car is

1370liters of space bigger than any other car on road ,the engine 1405cc turbo charged engine I have tested the car over 27000kms in 4month time .

all I found was great .

0-100kmph in just 11.49 secs (whopping)

average a\c on in city 15kmpl and highways 18kmpl

average without A\c was more good around 17.3kmpl in city and 21.1kmpl on highways.

its top speed is around 157kmph

then I compared it with other cars firstly and foremostly accent crdi

my findings were that the power steering was far better in the marina

you can find understeer in accent

plus the backseat had more legroom .the fuel efficiency did the rest .

the only thing that accent was high on was the pickup and topspeed .

marina has a very good suspension working very good in rural areas(i live in rajasthan) and I havent spent a single penny on the car as yet.

the only thing which you could think that this car is short of is the turbo which can be felt easily under2000rpm but when you get over it the turbo comes at 2000rpm and lasts upto 4000rpm .

the bottom line is that this car is the best if you really buy this car it will give you the best value for money

Tata Indigo Marina (Diesel)
Jun 20, 2005 04:30 AM 33117 Views

After you have decided the basic price range of the automobile you want to buy, there are now 3 basic options that you can go in for (ignoring the HatchBacks), namely:

(1) Sedans

(2) MUV/SUV

(3) Estates

While the first two have their respective pros/cons, the third option, Estates, was rarely considered. There was limited choice, and then again, for some unknown reason, manufacturers would price them a good amount more than their sedans cousins. This defied logic, as Estates would entail additional costs of only 5-10% from a manufacturing PoV.

Now, comes the Tata Indigo Marina, and it is chewing away at similarly, and possible higher prices sedans. Need I say what it has done to its Estate cousins from other manufacturers?

You get everything that comes as part of the Indigo package: Comfort, space, efficiency, etc, and MORE!

LOOKS: Looks similar from the front except for the prominent Ski-rails. The rear looks stunning with Glass over Metal rear windscreen and Christmas tree lights! The lights go all the way to the top and the additional roof mounted brake lights and rear fog lights (in tandem with headlight switch) makes it easy to spot on the darkest of the Indian NHs.. Side view helps you appreciate what the rear section has done to the Std Indigo in terms of Space and Size. Looks bigger than it is.

ENGINE: Good diesel engine with a turbo. The turbo kicks in around 2200RPM and stays with you, I think, till 3500RPM. This is good enough on a highway, when you can quickly accelerate, but slightly irritating in the city when you end up up-shifting as low as 2000RPM, in an effort to economize. Slight clutch slipping is called for at lower than 2200 Revs when starting from a standstill. The Turbo Lag is slightly notable, and hits you gently, and the car pulls like a petrol once the turbo Kicks. On the highways, for instance NH17, given the good suspension and commanding view, you will end up crossing the 3500RPM pretty quickly. Up-shifting at around 3500RPM, drops the revs right back to 2200RPM ....... At the start of the turbo boost. Superb Schumi style.

SUSPENSION: Good tough suspension that takes the bad stretches without too much fuss. Bad sections of Tar, especially the bad patch jobs done on highways are a pleasure to tackle. In city and at lower speeds, the suspension does come across as slightly hard. Did bottom out on a few occasions at speeds of 60-80 on typical Goan roads .. Narrow and gently uneven. Also tendency to slip out when cornering at high speeds, but controllable.

FUEL EFFICIENCY:

City:

Gives around 12-12.5KM/L in the city with AC always switched on. A slight control on the right foot, and the determination not to fly with the turbo (Up-shifting by 2000-2500RPM), results in a figure of 13.5Km/L but also a few curses as the power drops.

Highways:

While trying to maintain a good speed returned 15Km/L. Good speed = Bombay (Dadar) to North Goa (Baga) = 580Kms in 9Hours (including 3 10minute breaks) = 68Km/Hr. Not bad for a diesel returning 15Km/L, eh? It is possible to get an average of 17Km/L, with a lighter right foot. The problem for the ''I-like-driving'' drivers is that once you get into the right power band, you don’t feel like up-shifting until you run out of it. If you can control your desire to stop smiling and burning rubber, then up-shift at 3000RPM and see the average shoot up more.

Notes: City travel included Andheri to Powai and a slightly circuitous route back , around 50Kms per day, in some extra slow moving as well as some fast stretches. Highway driving includes NOT switching off the engine/ac in those small 10 minute breaks .. Stifling heat in May-June !!!!

EXPERIENCE:

Driver has it good. Good view, and responsive steering. Very prominent “A” pilar does obstruct view, but all round view is pretty good. Passenger comfort is superb with loads of legroom. My wife could sit cross-legged in the front passenger seat (not easy in the Esteem) and loved the drive! Rear space with just 2 passengers is simply awesome, and with 3 is still pretty good. You get idea of space, when you switch on the audio system. You can hardly hear the rear speakers, which sound distant!! But it is a good car to set-up a in-car video system. Now that explains why my wife was awake most of our trips!!

It would have been great IF, the rear seats of the MARINA could recline. You see there is nothing except the rear parcel shelf, which is anyway removable. Sedans would have the rear windscreen and cross-sections between the cabin and the boot, but a Estate doesn’t. Given this aspect, reclining rear seats would have made the journey even more comfortable. Small thing but is something you can do in a Estate not a sedan. Hmmmm...Anyway, good reclining angle of seats.

QUALITY:

That’s not why you will buy a MARINA/INDIGO.

(-)

HVAC switch is terrible and the links often snap out of place leaving the VENTS stuck in some bizarre position. So resist the urge to switch the ven position from FACE to Footwell or windscreen. It might just get stuck in that position. A 2-minute job and everything is alright, but VERY IRRITATING. Alter vent positions at your own risk! Roll up the windows a few times and the side rubber sidings at the bottom of the window come undone. Is a quick fix by just hitting it back in place with the window rolled down. The controls for the power windows? Either your hands are abnormally long, or you just pulled a muscle trying to reach it (placed in front of the gear lever)! My wife and I would argue about who was going to reach over and operate the window, at TOLL stations!!

(+)

Loads of space for just about everything. For loose change, cell phones, super generous front door pockets, overhead parcel shelf behind rear seats, the entire rear parcel shelf, cargo nets in the boot, etc. It also has the convenience of two chargers, one upfront, and the other in the cargo area. (Good for a mini-fridge!).

UTILITY:

Amazing Utility. Have squeezed 9 adults in the Marina. Two in the front, 5 in the middle, and 2 in the cargo area (parcel shelf removed, of course). Rear seats fold forward to offer a double bed space (a la famous Skoda ad of couple ....).

FINALLY:

Tata still needs to work on some things. Should have option of ABS as well. Has a superb AC but Rear seats should have had separate AC vents. Reclining rear seats. Work on quality.

It offers everything a sedan can and more. There are a few small things that need to be sorted out, but trust me, you never buy a Indigo/Marina for its quality .. but there is a whole lot more that makes you go for one. Go buy One

CAR DETAILS: INDIGO MARINA LX, 12/2004. Euro II. Done 10,000 Kms till date. Bought from BU BHandari. Good service while buying car, but haven't heard from them ever after. Makes me wish they were more like Vittesse, who call every month to enquire how the Esteem is doing ..... even though it is 5 years old now.

Tata Indigo Marina - Totally utilitarian.
Mar 15, 2005 02:53 PM 10600 Views

The Tata Indigo Marina is the latest offering from the Tata stable and is amongst the first of its kind of utility vehicle to have been launched in India. The shortest way in which I could define the Tata Indigo Marina is '' Value for money.''

The vehicle has lot of space and a powerful 1.4 litre engine (petrol version) to carry the weight with ease. The vehicle body is sturdy as with the other Tata vehicles and the height of the vehicle makes driving it a pleasure. You feel a cut above the various hatchbacks when driving it.

The seating is comfortable, both front and rear with more legspace than in any other car in its class. The rear seats can be folded to create what is called a double bed boot for resting co-passengers in case of long journeys.

The enginedelivers a strong 85bhp of power and the airconditioning is state of the art with a powerful blower. The powerful engine ensures that airconditioner can be used even when driving on hilly and rough terrain.

The suspension is reliable and strong and takes the potholes in its go. The power steering is soft and enables easier turns and maneuvering. The vehicle is being produced in both petrol and diesel variants. I own a petrol GLS version and it gives the average mileage of 10kms per litre in city and over 14 kms on highways with AC.

Recently, I tested this vehicle by driving it continuously for 3500 kms over 10 days and it has proved itself to be a reliable and tough companion. The maximum speed at which I drove at times with ease was 120 kmph without any problem what so ever.

On the whole Tata Indigo Marina is a useful indigenous vehicle fit for Indian terrain and is good value for money. The utility of the Marina is doubtlessly important for those who wish to own a sedan like vehicle which has a huge storage capacity to enable us to''carry our world with us.''

All you want & more .....
Jan 09, 2005 04:45 PM 7153 Views

My old car - an Indica DLS was spacious ...but I simply need more space & was waiting for a Bigger Car that would be affordable !! Tata - it was who made that dream come true with the nicely designed - Indigo Marina. I always loved the idea of a Estate car or a station wagon . Sedans never impressed me - not even the Indigo.

Let me tell u here whats interests me in a Car !! -

No. 1 - Its the looks & looks only,

No.2 - Space (after all its a car yaar) ,

No.3 - Fuel Economy

Why Marina Then? -

  1. Looks - Unique!! It does cause heads to turn & commands attention .. It could be called a poor-mans Honda CR-V lf one adored the honda looks but couldnt afford one. Although initially I found the Rear looking a bit Out-of- balance & oversized I m loving the looks the more I see it. Btw my Marina is

Black . Black I feel (u may think it as strange) looks more Solid & gives it the close-to-High-end- SUVs looks compared to the lighter colors (just my opinion).

2.Space - The Best compared to any car I have been in . A limo could be the only close competition I believe :) But Seriously the LegRoom & overall space in the car is Excellent. You can accomodate 2-4 children/ adults in the boot space if you really need that much space.

3.Economy - Affordably Priced- SO easier to own. I hav Driven 1000 kms so far at an Average of 13.5 kmpl . Mine is a GLS Petrol version . My driving has been mix of City & Highway including one trip to Pune. Diesel is said to give better mileage. My driving is not more than about .. 10000 km per year ..so petrol was my obvious choice. The Drive is Smooth although the Gear Shift is not as smooth as I expected. Overall with the Super Design /Interiors & Features I dont think there is a better Value for Money Car in India !!

Marina-Great Value For money

Marina is very different from the other estate cars on road in terms of looks.

First it's rear could make you think it is a CR-V -tall hieght(much taller than Indica) and lights going right up to the roof make it look like a Tall Boy-SUV

It's front is Indigo/Indica like and the side pose make it look bigger than the Indigo although the third window row looks slightly unbalanced given the short and cab-forward front of the car

But overall the car looks impressive and looks more expensive than it actually is

The diesel option of the Car is best suitable as we all have heard that Deisel indigo's are a lot better to drive

Interiors are as spacious as Indigo and the luggage capacity is quite amazing

Overall a great VFM package

It's competiion- Opel Corsa-Swing which looks very small and is very cramped

Palio Weekend/Adventure -both quite good looking but are much more expensive

Baleno Altura-not doing too well.

Other Competitor in same price range-Getz,Fusion-Marina certainly looks a greater VFM package than the Above 2

I think people will ,move from Indigo-to Marina bxcoz of excess luggage capacity

Estates have not really sold well in india.but the marina looks like it will change it all.one reason why they have not done well is that they have been priced too high and the parent companies themselves have not had a good take off.(baleno,fiat,opel).but the marina has it all.the price is low and both indica and the indigo have reserved a majority of the sales.

first the looks.the front is like the indigo.i guess tata wants to make an identity for itself with the chrome strip on top of the grille(like in the sumo, indigo and indica).when viewed from the side the marina looks elegant indeed.the rear is a bit different from the indica.there are the full length tail lamps but it looks different from that of the indica.a sleek chrome strip is also present but it looks like a flimsy add on.the rear bumper is also different.you get 14'' tyres with alloys, the alloys are only optional even on the high end versions.there is also a spoiler with an integrated vertical stop light.the marina is definitely better than the indigo in looks.

styling-8.5/10

the fit and finish is not up to the mark.there are many gaps between panels and joints.even the build quality is low compared to the other competitors.i have a feeling tata has built the marina with a budget in mind.

fit,finish and build quality-6.5/10

the marina is available in both diesel and petrol versions.both are from the indigo.anyway i'll tell you the info.the diesel is a turbocharged indirect injection 1405 cc that pumps 62 bhp,the petrol is a 1405 cc MPFI and gives 85 bhp.the petrol is refined but could be better.the diesel is refined and silent.it meets euro III norms.

diesel engine.-9/10

petrol engine-8.5/10

the place where the driver will spend most of his time, the interior.the dash looks similiar to that of the indica.but it has some dark green finish which is according to me is not very nice.you get a commanding view when you drive the car.seats are comfortable.the speedo and tacho dials have a chrome surround.it is a white dial for the petrol and black for the diesel.there are two rows of forward facing seats.it is an estate and so the space in the rear is crucial.the space is average(670 litres with the seats and more than 1300 litres with the seats folded.this is average in estates.the rear struts intrude massively into the rear.that reduces the actual usable space.finally build quality can be better.

interior-8/10

performance is good on both diesel and petrol versions.both are quite quick the petrol manages 0-100 kmph in around 14 seconds.the top speed is 160 odd kmph.the diesel is a bit slower ofcourse.it takes a bit more than 18 seconds for 0-100 kmph and its top speed is 140 odd kmph.but you have to keep the revs high on the diesel to get good performance.

performance petrol-9/10

performance diesel-9/10

the feature that matters the most on indian roads, fuel efficiency.the marina diesel which will make up most of the sales does not dissapoint.it gives around 12 kmpl in the city and more than 18 kmpl in the highway!but the petrol is not really good.in the city it gives less than 10 kmpl and in the highway it gives around 14 kmpl.all the estates in india are available only in petrol versions(except the palio).so here tata has got its act right.

diesel efficiency-9.5/10

petrol efficiency-8.5/10

lets sum up now.the marina is priced at 5.08 lakhs for the petrol top end and 5.58 for the diesel top end.this is just a few bucks more than the indigo.if you are going to buy an indigo, just put in a few more bucks and get a marina(because if you are satisfied with the build quality of the indigo then you must be satisfied with the build quality of the marina).the marina is an exellent car(only in india for indians).up to you now.
