I am a happy man with the new Indica Xeta GLS
Aug 13, 2008 05:01 PM 5404 Views

I have been using this car for the last 2 years and am absolutely happy with its performance.  What great space and comfort, unlike the cramped interiors of it competitors!. Good value for money.

Mileage is an area of concern. I had got 15.65 kms/litre on long hauls  and an average of 12 kmpl on general conditions.  I do not have much of city driving.

I would recommend this car to all of my friends and those who are interested in buying a mid - segment car.  The TATAS have proved that they not only make trucks but also cars.

My 2 yrs with Xeta -Part II (You & Life of ur Car)

08 - 08- 2008

hi Friends - I m writing from a different account Id as I was not allowed to post under the same id.

This is an add on to my earlier post - My 2 years with Xeta which was more on the car as a whole with a little technical details. In this second post I wish to share with a very recent experience with XETA which though not extensive can help you take some precautions to enjoy a troublefree ownership.

Recently I had to give my car for a routine service check up(I m planning a trip to Goa). Complaints included:

1) rain water inside the car. My carpet had water puddles. Initally I presumed it was coz I was getting in to the car all wet

2) Instrument panel shows wrong oil warning signal after a long ride or sustained heavy traffic use(when driven in 1st & 2nd gear for a long time)

3) Bottom of the car(exhaust) rubbing the speedbreakers (though marutis have this issue I never previously faced this problem with my Xeta even when fully loaded)

4) The front glass/wind shield not getting cleaned properly(Used to cause a lot problem during rains especially in the night)

5) Routine oil check ups

6) Brake pad replacement at 28000 km

7) Alternator belt replacement at 28000

8) Rear Door locks

Now the Feedback(how the most unsuspecting things can cuase you trouble):

1) FOR ALL OF YOU WHO WISH GETTING A MUSIC SYSTEM INSTALLED FROM OUTSIDE. The water logging was due to the wiring of my system(includes a woofer and 2 amplifiers).  I was told that the wiring also has rubber bushings through which it passes within the car. The rubber bushings had come off & water was entering from there. For those who have a factory fitted music system check for clogging of small pipes that drains water out from the car or leaky windows. Its very critical to check for waterlooging inside the car as initially most of us tend to overlook it supposing it to be routine monsoon problem.

Cost: I had to get the carpet washed & dried. But the main expense was getting the RAMDHA replaced. This is a thick layer just below the carpet & above the floor. It insulates the cabin from tyre noise as well as helps cooling.  Water had spoiled this layer. Cost is approx 1000.

So take care with external fitments. Infact with a tata car be careful with any non-factory fitted kit(electrical issues can cause problem).

2) Gear oil gets over fully at around 26k mark so had to refill it

3) Engine flushing is mandatory at 25k. removes carbon deposit - Cost Rs. 1750

4) OIl top offs- engine oil / brake oil

5) Brakde pad cost - Rs. 1000/-(safety measure though my old pads had still some bite left)

6) Alternator Belt cost - Rs. 750/-(again a safety measure- a snapped alternator belt can leave you stranded). But check if old one needs replacement. squeaking noise form the engine when you start the car is coz of a worn out alternator belt or a belt with lot of dirt accumulated on it. Ask the service guy to check if it is frayed or has become hard.

7) Bushing & some screws on the exhaust had come off so the exhaust was brushing speedbreakers. So next you notice your indica brushing breakers which it earlier use to clear easily check for this minor issue- Cost of replacement is nominal

8) Wiper rubber had eroded. During summers the windscreen gets very hot. The wiper rubber melts when it touches this hot glass. - Nominal cost for new rubber

9) Door locks have been rectified. MIne is not an automatic lock or central locking. Plain simple old time lock knob which needs to be pressed, so finding the problem & rectifying it was not an issue.

The service & response was satisfactory(I had tried out a new service station). But problem cropped after I took the delivery - On my way back home. The power delivery is generally very linear in a Xeta (not exactly on the first gear but smoothens out soon as you pick up speed). But this time around after a few Kms the car pick up started dropping drastically at average RPMs even with a lower gear shift. The power surge was missing with downshifts and then all of a sudden from nowhere normal power used to return with a jerk. I continued in this fashion till I was close to my house and the car finally stalled 2 kms away from my house. The irony was that my troublefree xeta created this problem after this service. But what saved the day was the response of the service team. WIthin 45 mins I had a Tata car with mechanic reach me. The problem was traced to ignorance of a service team personnel in allowing to enter one of the fuses. This had shorted the fuse. The car was promptly taken back & delivered to me at my house the very next day in top condition.

So am I sharing this with you?

1) Timely care can save a lot of expenses in future. 25000, 50000, 75000. are important readings on your odometer

2) Try to find an authorised dealer close to your house. You will really appreciate it when you face problem or when you need the car to delivered to your house since you dont have time

3) Reliability is important but equally important is the response when things go wrong. The response I got from the team post service fiasco has completely pacified me and I look at as a minor blip which had nothing to do with the car's dependability.

4) Many times we tend to get biased negatively when the fault may not really lie at the manufacturer's end - It could be ur ill treatment, irregular servicing or tendenacy to push the parts of the car till they are fully worn that can get you in to trouble. And manytime such troubles lead to another one making ownership tiring and demanding

5) External fitments may look good but be practical. Alloy tyres look sexy. But keep in mind Xeta has 13 inch rims. The vendor may push your for 14 inch alloys saying it will fit the car. 14 inch alloys will fit but the cost will be life of your suspension.(indica turbo diesel has 14 inch rims). Also normal factory fitted radial tyres last for 45000 kms- so if you change before that its a waste of money. Xeta rims get out of shape sooner than other cars(extremely poor qaulity rims).  So if you own a xeta it makes sense to replace rims and tyres between 35-40000kms.

SO does this experience change my view about Xeta?

No! Nothing beats the car for the sheer value it delivers. At 28000 kms I know my car has been refurbished with all the essentials that will take me to 50000 kms in the same hasslefree manner.

In fact this experience has helped me build a stronger bond with the car(it should be cared(not pampered) like a baby) as well as company through its service team

Thats all for now!

Bye

Indica Xeta GLE

My decision for purchasing this vehicle is mainly guided by its space, price and look & colour.

  • An Excellant Car with a Value for Money.

  • Clutch is too smooth such that u can even make the vehicle moving by just releasing the clutch without pressing the accelerator.

  • Brake is also very effective.

  • The car being heavy, never vibrates at higher speed (>60 Km).

  • AC is very powerful and cools the interior within 10 minutes.

  • Pickup is very good. You cannot realize when u have reached 80 Km when on highways.

I have taken delivery of this car on March 2008 and so far run 3021 Km. I booked the car in December 2007, but had to wait for 3 months for the sanction of loan. They have also given Rs.30, 000/- discount.

I have also taken 30 months extended-warranty.

I have taken the car to workshop so far 4 times and every time for the "Check Engine" light problem. The people at the workshop got it corrected. Their welcoming, behaviour and dealings have so far been quite good. I have also done my 1st service and under-chasis anti-rust coating with with. I am using HP "Power" petrol since purchase.

A very very smoothly Drivable Car excepting the following constraints:

1) Mileage -- I am getting not more than 9.5 per ltr. even without AC. Of course I have not checked making full-tank. I used to fill 10 ltr. at a time and then again fill up when the needle touches the red mark on the fuel gauge. This gives me around 95-97 Km.

2) I have obtained 12.22 km/ltr with full tank and AC at 50% time. Considering 37 Ltr. fuel tank capacity, the 1/2 mark should be 18.5 ltr; which has given me 226 Km that works out to be around 12 Km.

3) Check Engine light quite often glows on and then goes off automatically after 1-2 days.

4) A heavy car, a bit difficult for the ladies and the aged without power steering. I shall definitely recommend this car to firsttime buyers, ofcourse not to extremely  fuel economy  and cost  conscious  people.*

Total  on-Road Price: Rs.3, 28, 000/=

a) Car Price               = Rs.2, 86, 000

b) Ext. Warranty        = Rs.     4, 000

c) Road Tax & Regn. = Rs.  26, 500

d) Insurance               = Rs.  11, 500

My 2 yrs with Xeta -Part I (general info)
Jul 18, 2008 06:06 PM 16100 Views

This is my first review for msht and I really dont know how useful it will be (though to make it simpler I have tried to review various aspects of car ownership)

P.S.Note -My Xeta GLS is approx. 2 years old (around 26k mileage). Engine capacity - 1.4 ltrs

1) Performance -

This was the main criteria for me when I purchased the car. This small car can really match the big ones  on a highway. The main reason for this is the 1.4 ltr engine on the car which is big for a hatchback (though premium hatch backs like swift & getz do have big engines).

The 1.4 ltr makes it a good choice over wagon R, santro & other small cars. I have driven at a top speed of around 160 Km/hr. The car feels sturdy at high speeds coz of the weight & low centre of  gravity. These attributes also safeguard it from crosswinds & wobbliness normally seen with small cars like wagon r & santro post 120 kmph. The pick up is not very exciting though pressing accelerator more than normal gives instant pick up its not recommended - u will compromise on your fuel efficiency & engine life

For new buyers- The new xeta has a sub 1.2 ltr engine (so don’t expect a similar performance. The new ones are more for fuel efficiency)

2) Mileage

Not ideal for city driving considering the high price of fuel & traffic - around 12 km/litr with intermittent AC use. 15 -16 on highway. You can extract more with fewer gear changes & by driving smoothly with a light foot (consistent speed of 70-80 kmph). This may not be relevant for the new xeta as the engine capacity is low

3) Long term Maintenance

Maintenance is not an issue at all. The price of spares is low; the service network is good and the staff professional. I had not problems with this car. Routine maintenance costs around 900-1000 rs on an average (after your free servicing term is over). The only part that wore off recently was my accelerator cable - it snapped on the highway. Replacing this cost me just around 150 bucks.

4) Durability

Usually small cars do rattle in about 2-3 years time. There is not much of body rattle in a xeta but a lot depends on the kind of road you use to commute.  The engine is still efficient & has the bite. Take care of the tyre rims as they start to get out of shape if you hit potholes constantly. Also wheel alignment goes off at periodic intervals. Do wheel alignment & balancing post every 3-4000 kms. If you experience steering wobbling this is the reason. As a safety measure alternator belt & brake pad needs to replaced between 27-30000 kms. The gear shift is intially a little hard but smoothens over a period of time. But still not at par with Japanese cars.

5) Comfort

Excellent. Good for 5 people. Visibility is excellent due to the shape. The cabin is airy & beige interiors add to the big car feel inside. Drivers seat not exactly up to the mark though. The Boot is too small for a car of this size (comparing it with other small cars)

6) Interiors

Nothing fancy. Purely basic & outdated but then you cant get everything you want. Functional is the only way to describe it.

7) Looks

Goods clean & good. Nothing flashy about it. The rear spoiler with brake light is standard on GLS & other models. The other accessory you can add on is fog lamp (not sure of its use though)

8) FInally the Drive

The petrol indica is 100% more engaging than the diesel one. The steering is not as responsive or direct as the japanese cars (hydraulic steering of tata compared to the electronic steering of japanese cars) but one can live with it considering the power engine delivers. The straight line speed is awesome (you ll really love car on an express highway) and can match the best but be careful on winding roads - the tail does not respond too well. All in all fun to drive on an empty stretch coupled with cautious approach on ghats (though good when climbing up these winding roads).

Overall a good package for the price. Ideal for someone with a tight budget who needs to do a lot of highway commute.

Some tips: regularly check oil levels, coolant levels, brake oil, brake pad, tyre pressure, wheel alignment, dont rev the engine

If you are a new owner run the car in @ 60 km/hr till you do around 2000-3000 kms ( the engine gets really smooth after that)

Thanks & Enjoy the drive

I am not divulging what made me buy this compared to others as the factors that influenced 2 years back have changed - new products and pricing dynamics. But in my personal opinion XETA still remains a good choice in sub 3.5 Lakh category ( above this budget u really have good choices). Spark, Alto, Wagon R & Santro are the closest rivals. Offering you a few parameters to consider  when buying a sub 3.5 lakh car

Spark: Issues - Spares, resale value, comfort factor of a local mechanic in urgency, Service network. XETA, MARUTI & SANTRO Scores over Spark here. Check the insurance cost of these cars. As this will pinch your pocket every year. It wil be diff for diff cars

Does it suiit your personality & need ?

SPark - cute (may be a little flashy), someone who is still growing up (hangs around with a small group of friends

Alto - purely functional, either traveling alone or sometimes with not more than a person more (wife), very cost conscious

Xeta - someone needs comfort for himself, tries to get the maximum value for money(the big car feel), has a slightly bigger family- maybe father mother would like to travel in the car & would want to be comfortable in the back seat.

Santro & Wgaon R - Brand & qaulity concious.

My personal choice

Spark & Alto is out (Alto only if you are on a very tight budget - even on a monthly basis).

Comparing petrol cost of the most frugal car Alto & most thirsty car XETA if you travel 20 kms in a day :

Xeta -20 Km /day x 25 days - approx 500 kms in a month. 500 kms will need approx 48 litres (if mileage of car is 12-13 km/litr). 48 litrs x 55 rs /itrs - 2640 Rs in a month and Rs. 31680 in a year.

Alto - you will spend around RS 1600-1700 on petrol in a month. under same driving condition alto should give you 17 km/ltr). So you save around Rs. 1000/- in a month. Is this 1000 rs very critical to your monthly budgeting?

Between Santro , Wagon R & XETA

Santro & WR have a BETTER PERCEIVED QUALITY than Xeta. I dont agree too. Both have good refined engines. Better than Xeta.

If you need a refined choice and some thing to drive in city- Santro/Wagon R (both are outdated)

If you need a good engine which is not as refined but responsive on highways & a car that makes you feel safe while overtaking - Xeta

If your looking for Sheer value - Xeta is the choice

India Xeta GLG Review
Jul 14, 2008 03:58 PM 8993 Views

First of all let me appreciate mouthshut.com for providing the users an opportunity to post their reviews and comments. My sincere thanks to the mouthshut team.

I chose to buy Indica Xeta GLG after reading the reviews posted by many proud owners on mouthshut.com and on recommendation from my friend who owns Indica Diesel & Petrol version. I bought this car in the last week of April 2008 from Shaman Auto (Mumbai) for Rs. 3, 26, 000/- (Thane registration), which means my car is less than 3 months old.

Why I choose to buy Indica Xeta GLG?

(1)   I don’t like Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai as all their models are over priced

(2)   Indica is a TATA product (a trusted company)

(3)   Space and comfort in the car is better than other cars in this budget

(4)   Attractive price/ discount offered by the dealer

(5)   Good Air-conditioning (1 ton)

(6)   Car design & safety (low and wide car)

(7)   Low maintenance

Am I happy with the car?

The answer is “NO” because of many reasons. In fact, I’m planning to sell the car and buy a decent one that fulfils the above criteria except the pricing and the brand.

Why I’m not happy with the car?

In the past, I’ve driven Maruti 800 for 3 years, Hyundai Santro manual for a year, Honda City manual – old model for a year and Opel Marina manual in Europe. When I returned from Europe I decided to buy an automatic car with a good air conditioner because of the worst traffic conditions and bad weather in Mumbai; but none of the car were available in India that would fit my budget. Honda City – Automatic was a good choice but over priced. I believe in value for money and think twice before I spend every penny I've earned. I decided to hire a driver and started my research on good affordable cars with low maintenance in the long run. After a lot of research, test drives and feedback from many others, I choose to buy Indica Xeta GLG Petrol, as my daily run was not more than 25 kms.

Since the time I’ve bought this car, I’m cursing my decision. I was advised by many people including my family members to not to buy a TATA product but wanted to prove a point that TATA motors have improved. Actually, I believed in TATA products as I worked for them for more than 5 years in the past.

Initially there were 2 defects that I noticed on the day of delivery and was told that these defects will be fixed during the 1st service and not on that very day. There were few more defects in the car that I noticed after few days like cracked headlamp and bad door/ window rubber fittings. The headlamp was replaced without any cost but I’m compromising with other defects that cannot be replaced. The finishing is not up to the mark (in fact worst) and my car has started making noises from everywhere. I think I’ll have to install a music system to get rid of these noises. The mileage that I got for the first 1000 kms I drove was only 4.5 kms per litre and later was improved to 6.4 kms by TASC Worli service station. Believe me, I was told by the attendant that since it is a new car the mileage is so low. Over a period of time, the mileage shall improve and need not be fixed at this point in time. Only when I insisted this issue was fixed. After the 1st service the mileage improved to 7.5 kms and continues to be between 7.5 & 8. I always run my car with AC on in Mumbai city limits.

The customer service offered by the dealers and service stations I visited were not good. I hope they improve on this front very soon. I spoke to few people in TATA motors (regional office) and they helped me to get the above problems fixed. They are very helpful, prompt and tries to understand the defect/ problem and assist you to fix them.

To improve the mileage my service station advisor advised me to take my car on a long drive, which I did in the last week. I traveled to Lonavala, Khandala, & Ambey Valley via Mumbai-Pune expressway and the mileage I got is around 8.5 kms per litre with AC on. During this drive I noticed many other problems and have reported this to TATA motors today morning. Hopefully, they assist me to fix this ASAP. Would any body believe that I’ve stopped using this vehicle from today and she is done only 2000 kms till date and have so many issues? Also the air-conditioning initially was not up to the mark. I had to install a Garware sun-film worth Rs.6000/- on all four sized. Post this; the cooling is better but not excellent. Where as the cooling in Indica Diesel remains the best in its class.

The problems that were noticed in my long journey are (a) Car refused to climb up the hill with AC on and when all seats are occupied with sufficient luggage in the boot (some how we managed the show) (b) You have to drive constantly in 1st gear to climb up the hill with 4 others in the car (twice I had to ask couple of people to get down and push the car from behind) (c) Other cars like Alto, 800, Santro easily overtakes you when climbing the hill (in fact twice I lost to auto-rickshaw) (d) Handbrake doesn’t function when on hill with 4 others sitting in the car (e) I also noticed power-steering getting harder at low speed (my back and shoulders are still in pain) (f) we started getting a burning smell in the car when the engine was pushed hard to climb the mountain (g) brakes are not very good but better than 800 and Alto.

I don’t want to say that all Indica Xeta will have the above problems mentioned but I’m sure I have got a defective piece. There are few good things that I’ve noticed with my car but I think it is useless to talk about after mentioning the above defects/ problems. I know one individual who can talk great about Indica Xeta since he never faced this kind of issues. The only difference between us is that the Xeta he owns is his first car and I have owned and experienced many other cars/ brands. The benchmarking will always be different with difference users and type of usage. I would recommend all prospective buyers to test the car in the worst conditions before you freeze the decision to buy. I now realize that spending little more or more to buy a good car makes good sense and off course a wise decision in India at least where consumers like me have no powers to go against the maker. I’ve learnt this lesson the hard way and hope people reading this review makes a correct choice and decision. I’m not proud of my brand new Indica Xeta GLG 1.2 litre petrol.

Best wishes. Amal

Is Xeta LPG really worth?
Jul 01, 2008 10:29 PM 12650 Views

Xeta LPG gives an average of 9-10 KM/Liter of LPG and on petrol 11-12 KM/Liter. In bangalore LPG costs around Rs. 38/- where as petrol costs Rs. 57/-.

Car starts on petrol and after 2-3 km run it switches to LPG. So, LPG & Petrol both are used to run the car.

In this case not really sure is it worth going for LPG by paying around 20-25K extra and compromise on features because it comes with only GLS model.

Can some one suggest?

I Bought Tata Indica Xeta GLG Last Oct.  I wanted to have Car that should have good space and should have price below 4lac. After having look at the various car and there pros and cons I decided to go for Tata Indica Xeta.

I learned driving using Santro so it taken a day or two to adjust to Indica on curves. Santro has a small turning radius so you need to adjust a bit, if you are a learner.

Over all Dealer satisfaction is good. It was and easy going.

*About CAR

*Car is pretty specious in class and range. One feels comfortable sitting inside.

Car is pretty power does well at low speed.

Currently giving average 10-12 Km/l in city. (For First few months I drive

car a lot in 2nd and 3rd gear.)  I need to check it again as first service is

done.

After Sales Service

1) I have done 1st service for they car. They have given pickup and drop

facility for service.

2) Service was satisfactory.

*Pros.

*1) Pretty specious car

2) Power car can drive it with comfort

3) Handling is easy. I found gearshift pretty smooth

4) Good pickup if AC is not on.

*Cons.

*1) Average in city can be of bit concern.

2) Hand break needs some Improvement

3) Power steering is good but if you are one shifting from Santro of Wagon R

might not find it as good. But looking at width and length of this car it is

good enough.

Over all, it is a good experience till now.

3rd and FINAL update:(August 2009)

The mileage so far has been 23000 km. I will straight go to the essential events

  1. 3rd service done at 20, 000 kms at CARKRAFT once again. Same courtsey and efficient service. this service was a tad expensive( rs.2200). Some more parts like fuel filter, air filter etc was changed and the prices of engine oil has also increased due to the hike in petroleum prices.

  2. So far, not even one major problem regarding any car part. I had 3-4 minor problems regarding windshield wipers etc.All too small costing less than Rs.100 each time

  3. The car was squeaking a bit before he service( my driver calls it "car asking for service squeak"). That disappeared after the service.

  4. I have gone on fairly long drives on highways and on all sort of roads. The car has never ever given me a problem.

  5. A month back the car was suddenly giving me low milage( 10km/litre). Remember that normally my car normally gives 12-13 km/litre with 70% AC on in the city. Checks determined that tyre pressure was faulty and wheel alignment was also a bit faulty. Got tyres under correct pressure( free) and Rs.500 for wheel alignment from a local garage.

Car is again back to standard fuel efficiency

  1. The engine is still as responsive as when it was new, infact it has got smoother. Now I can easily drive at 4th gear below 40km/hr at at the 3rd gear below 30km/hr. The car does not shudder at high gears and low speeds. The engine has become much smoother I guess.

Recently a funny thing happened. A friend of mine casually asked me whether I was interested in selling my car. it must be mentioned here that I planned all along to sell my car after using it for two years. I said yes and at a reasonable price the deal was settled. He was extremely interested in my car becoz he has gone on drives with me, the car stays at a garage at his apartment building and he has seen the performance and solidity over the past two years.

I am planning to buy a new car now but some parting tips for Indica XETA owners and wannabe buyers:

1.Treat your car well in the first 1000 kms by never going above 60km/hr or revving abve 2000rpm( watch the tacho)

  1. Run your car by following the gear aspects mentioned by TATA( it is there on the windshield at the drivers side) for the first 20, 000km. Only after that try to run in high gears at low speeds( resulting in better fuel efficiency). If you try this before 20, 000 km, your engine suffers

  2. Change engine oil at 1000( 1st service), 10, 000(2nd service), 20000(3rd service) as reccomended.

Also change at 15000km and at 25000km.

i.e, change gear oil every 5000 kms after 10000km has been completed

  1. Frequently top up engine oil, coolant, distilled water as and when required( check once every two weeks, make a habit)

  2. Check tyre pressure before a long trip and check wheel alignment after a long and bumpy trip

  3. Get the underbody rust proof treatment done at or after the first service. You will get a better resale value

  4. Try reading about experiences of other car owners( your model) and learn from them. Utilise this info in maintaining your car. One website which stands out in this regard is https://team-bhp.com

My mom has given the ultimate accolade by asking me to buy another new Indica XETA:-)

However, I am torn between Indica VISTA Quadrajet and Maruti Swift VDi DDiS. I am shifting to diesel as my driving would be much more in the coming year.( Ritz is out of the question as I do not like the "kicked in the ass" look). Rest of the diesel hatchbacks simply don't enter the picture.

Expect a review from me on whichever car I buy. But it's time to end this review, say goodbye to Indica XETA and move on.

Thanks for reading and have a great ride.

Chennai India
Unbiased review on my one and a half year old xeta
Jun 15, 2008 02:59 AM 6154 Views

This is my second review on my xeta. First one I wrote 1 and a half year before when my car was brand new. Now it is tested and testedin extreme conditions. I have taken my car from chennai to trivandrum and back, to coimbatore and back... etc), when it has ran around 800 kms continously, that too through very bad conditioned roads (road work was going on all along the stretch from chennai to nagarcoil that time).

I got a stearing wobbling after that drive, which was rectified by the service centre during my second free service. They told that the problem was with the wheel alighment and they corrected it. This is the only problem I have faced in my car till now. Luckly I have never faced a starting trouble till date though I use to read in MS that many are facing such problems.

This is one of the best cars in this catagory for long drives. The safety feeling, comfort and space (both for luggage and persons) we enjoy in this car, I bet no other car in this catagory can offer. AC is really powerfull as it cools the car very fast even at peak summers. But this is done at the cost of the pick up of the car which becomes very low with AC on. This makes city driving difficult at times in midst of heavy traffic.Gear shift is another plus point of the car. It is really smooth compared to wagon R and alto.(I have not driven any other car).

Thats all as far as positives are concerned (probably some more may be there.. nothing is coming to my mind right now :)). Talking about negatives.. No.1 is mileage.. No.2 mileage and No. 3 is...... yes... u guessed it right.. mileage once again.. I am getting 11 to 12 (only) in city and 14.9 in long drive.. this is with 80% approx. AC on. I dont know WagonR or santro’s mileage (definitely more than this only.. but how much??? I dont know).. but alto gives around 18 to 20 in long drives people say. I think the it is the heaviness of Xeta which is making our pocket lighter.

Response of Power steering is average. It is no were near those of  suzuki cars.. (Do the car weight has to do anything on this?). As I already mentioned pick up with AC on is low and we will feel that during initial acceleration, over takings and city drives sometimes.. Otherwise its ok..

To sum up so far so good with my xeta. It has never made me stand helpless in the middle of the road , except in one or two occasions when I had tyre punctures. Free servicing done were satisfactory (moderately)  till now. No major complaints except the milage and the steering wobbling issue. For the money we pay... I think we cannot ask for more. Anyway this is my view: Xeta may not be the best car in the segment, but it is the best value for money car in any segment.

Indica Xeta 2008 + driving tips
May 23, 2008 12:37 AM 12270 Views

Hi,

I bought my first car - Tata Indica Xeta GLG (2008 model) in April' 08 and recently clocked my first 1000 kms. I wouldn't glitch a bit to say that it is one of the best cars in hatchback category, also considering that my family also has a Santro which has clocked more than 85K kms and is still going good.

Just like others, and those who are planning to buy a first car in hatchback segment, I had several options at hand - Santro, i10, Indica, WagonR, Alto, Swift, Palio, Aveo-UVA, and Spark. My budget was 4L, for which I had remove the options of i10, Swift, Palio and Uva. I skipped the santro as well since we already have one - just to have different car. I would certainly recommend a santro. Now, I was left with WagonR (Duo + only petro),  Alto, Spark and Indica Xeta. I test drove all of them and found that Xeta was much more comfortable than the rest. Also, since I am almost 6 feet, my knees touched the steering of the Alto, and had to move the seat right at back on the Spark and WagonR.

The Spark and Alto also lacked power on slopes with AC on. The pickup and driving comfort of WagonR and Xeta is almost the same. WagonR has just a little bit more viewability than the Xeta due to the later's high mounted dashboard. But that is no prob for me. One can also use the seat foam which increase the seat height by a few inches. The fuel efficiency of WagonR (petrol and duo) was one important point that went in its favour. However, for the duo I would have to shell out around 20K more, for a 22 ltr tank, I felt it wasn't worth since refuelling would have been very often, as also the LPG gas station was quite far from my house. Even Wagon R petrol is said to give around 13-14kmpl in Mumbai city traffic, which I felt was very good. But then, considering the features, power, air conditioning, safety, looks and more importantly the price, I chose Xeta over WagonR. Xeta GLG is around 50-60K cheaper than WagonR Vxi, with almost the same features in both.

I selected the GLG version since I wanted power windows and power steering. I did not select GLX (the highest version) since it was costing me around 40K more than GLG. GLX has a more powerful engine of 1.4L which I believe is not needed for a hatchback, as also some other features like rear wipers, rear power windows (GLG has only front power windows) etc. The features are good to have but not worth for an extra 40K.

In my first 1000kms, which was mainly from Thane to Andheri and back, in average traffic time, and 70% AC on, my car is giving me around 10.5 to 11 kmpl, which I believe is fair enough. The engine is surprisingly smooth with almost no noise. My first car service is done and I have refuelled it to full tank. The odometer has passed 210km mark and the fuel gauge is still at half tank mark - expecting around 11.5 - 12 kmpl.  Will check the latest mileage and update soon. The AC is powerful and cools the cabin in no time.

My car cost me around Rs. 3.4L on road Thane. The dealer provided me with sun-control film, one layer of polish and steering wheel cover. I bought the auto-cop with standard security features for an additional 4.5K from the dealer itself. I installed a pioneer music system panel with usb, and Blaupunkt speakers which are simply awesome. The music system cost me 11K including labour from a local blaupunkt dealer.

Ten tips for improving the fuel efficiency and increasing engine life:-

  1. Do not rave the engine unnecessary.

  2. On highways, drive at around 60 kmpl @ 1800-2000 rpm.

  3. Try to follow the gear change instructions mentioned on the windshielf - it will become a habit soon. It does help for better FE.

  4. Drive your car in such a way that you have to apply lesser brake. The more you brake, the more you are lossing unnecessary power applied earlier.

  5. On steap slopes, put the AC off as it reduces the load on the engine. Switch off the AC at red signal, and put it back on once in 3rd gear.

  6. While driving downslope (eg. downslope of a flyover), get to the middle lane and reduce the accelerator. A car or 2 may overtake you, but this will help improve the FE of your car.

  7. In bumper-to-bumper traffic, avoid sudden pickup and braking. Use as little accelaration as you can since MPFI engines are designed to run even when the accelerator is not pressed. Just de-clutch your vehicle slowly and the car will move a few meters easily.

  8. Check all the oil levels atleast once a month. It takes you only 30mins to do so.

  9. Service your vehicle every 6 months or 5000 kms, whichever is earlier.

  10. Folllow the above 9 tips, and see the difference. Many of them may sound stupid and obvious, but then we need to follow them to make them obvious, right!

All in all, I would certainly recommend Indica Xeta to anyone who is planning to buy a hatchback with a budget of 3.5L. With a higher budget of 4.5 - 5L go for an i10 or a Swift!

Awesome Value for Money Car
Apr 24, 2008 02:50 PM 6236 Views

I have owned a indica xeta for the last 2 yrs (bought it in March 2006) from Pandit Auto in Pune. Over the last 2 years I have driven more than 15000 kms on it in Pune and more recently in and around bangalore. I am extremely satisfied with the car. When I wanted to buy a car (my first car) I test drove practically every car in the market (including the mid and top end ones ;) ).. What stuck me abt xeta was that it was as you may have heard a true "Value for money" car.

All the crap you hear abt Tata's not being able to have a good petrol engine is nonsense. The car gives me 11 - 12 average in bangalore traffic and 16 on the highway. I** once drove from Bangalore to wayanad and back and it gave me an average of 18!!!

*The amount of things you can pack in the car is simply mind boggling (i moved houses in Bangalore and was able to fold the back seat and move everything except the white goods (fridge, washing machine etc) in the back of my car in 3 trips flat.

Once I even loaded the back of my car with  1000 kgs of textured tiles for our new home and drove it across town and it did not give me any problems.

One more thing abt the car is - its sturdy .. one feels safe in the car ..

Tata motors has a great after sales service (I go to Manipal motors) and till date I have not had any issues with my baby ...

For anyone who is not very image conscious ("Tata makes trucks not cars" - kind of comments your friends may make) and wants the max bang for his buck ... Go in for a Xeta.

A strong Car in its category!
Apr 23, 2008 01:13 PM 5794 Views

I have been using this car for the last one and a half year.  At the time of purchase, our budget was not more than 3.3 lakh(approx.).  So we had the choices of Maruti 800, Alto and Indica Zeta.  Maruti 800 is a well tested car but because of increasing show business among big city people, its sale is declining day by day.  Moreover, it is the least safe car as well as it lacks all the modern facilities. However, we cannot neglect its low price which infact, is commendable. My choices were basically for Indica Zeta and Alto. Although, Alto is a well establised car and is from Maruti brand but looks small and weak in comparison to Indica Zeta.  Moreover, I was not ready to spend around one lakh more for the same 800 engine.  Therefore, I purchased Indica Zeta at that time.

Overall, its a great car!  Because of its massive body, you won't feel scared on roads. It is very tough.  In a country like India, where we have continuously increasing traffic problems, its advisable to opt for a car which is more strong(to prevent dents and scratches) than being technically sophisticated. Although, it is not a very sophisticated machine but is well reliable, comfortable, powerful as well as good looking.  If you look at its front side, it really looks like a beautiful car unlike high roof duckling cars in the same category.  Space-wise too, its the best in its class.  Five people of any size can comfortably sit in it. Luggage space is also perfect. The best thing that I like about this car is its gear shift feature. Its really fantastic!  I have tried other cars like Wagon R, Alto, 800, Zen(old and new) but never found such smoothness in shifting gears(specially the back gear). Engine is also smooth and responsive. As it is not a light weighted car, your body will never jump while applying brakes.

Now, let me tell you some of its negative aspects.  The interior plastic quality should be improved. Body of the car is fabulous but paint is not so good. Milege is also not very good but that could be an excuse because of its bigger engine as well as heavy body than the other cars. One thing that I don't like about this car is its pick up.  You will really feel this thing specially when the AC is ON. As its engine is around 1200CC and therefore, pick up while AC is ON should never be a problem for this car. This point has to be taken care of by the company.  In a nutshell, its a car to buy.

Review-How Xeta Won the race & 1000 km Review
Apr 20, 2008 12:16 PM 8840 Views

I wish to explain my experience regarding selection of new car. Because of the availability of too many choices one may confuse like me while selecting. This may be happening to many amongst us while going for purchase of a new vehicle. I hope my this experience will help few like me.

I have been on the move to select a car for the last six months. My budget was Rs.3.5 lacs max. With this budget I have to select vehicles from Maruti 800, Alto, Zen Estilo, Wagon-R, Santro, i10(ready to spend few K more for this car), Tata Indica and Spark

How Xeta won the race: None of the car is rejected but disfavoured due to reasons that do not seem favourable to our needs.

Maruti 800, Alto, Spark - Disfavoured by all the family members because of less leg space for front and back seaters. Spark rules Alto and 800 in all fields. But costlier than other two.

Wagon R- voted out because of its van shape.

Now Santro, i10, Estillo and Xeta were left in the field.

Hyundai i10:

Positives: Good in driving and interiors. Engine sound is good.Space wise not better than Santro. AC is good

Negatives: Lack of leg room space. My legs and even sales person legs touching the front Dash Board console. When seat adjusted back wards, Persons sitting back become uncomfortable. Gives congested looks when four person sitting in the cars just like Maruti 800. Protruded Front headlights glass gives vintage look from side. Space at top of front deep dash board console is kept unutilized.

hence Idea to spend few k more for this car was dropped.

Santro:

Positives: Same as above. More freebies like MP3 player, and auto Central locking. Already tested vehicle. Good resale value. AC is very good.Cheaper than i10

Negatives:

Space wise same but better than i10.

Zen Estillo:

Positives: Good finishing, Trusted company, Good reputation of after sales services.Fuel efficiency told to be more than Santro and Xeta. Good storage space at back side. Not felt much difference while driving Alto and Zen.Interiors are good.Good range of colors to select.Easy to parks at less space.

Negatives: Mini Innova look is not comfortable.Congested with four people sitting.Ride is not comfortable. Feminise look.

Good for ladies to drive.

Tata Xeta:

Negatives:

Not liked by general class .Taxi Image. Most of the friends told me to avoid buying Indica Class of vehicle told me better to go for Indigo CS Basic model. Not Good reviews in Mouthshut, Team-BHP. Fuel Efficiency is also a negative factor. Tata is not familiar with Petrol Engines.Very bad resale value.Finishing of Plastic parts are not good at corners. Tata have to tight the screws of QC Team.

Positives: Very Spacious, Interiors Best in Class. Comfort best in Class. Cost wise very Cheap. All provisions made keeping in view of the needs of Indian People. So much features available in less cost. Test ride in friend's Xeta helped me to decide my next car.Well established Service backup of TATAs

Most factors were going against the Xeta. But even then I have become dishonest towards other cars and take extra step to meet few actual users of Xeta. Every body have claimed that there vehicle gives near 16+ Km/l in city driving and 18+ Km/l in long drive. Figures look exaggerated. Keeping in view the bad reviews where FE is stated to be 13-14 km/l in City drive, it is near to santro.

Therefore the choice is narrowed down to Xeta. And finally I took the delivery of My Xeta GLG, on 7th navratra(11th April, 2008).

I recount the Purchasing experience and initial review below:

Helping Hand: My friend and Checklist made by Team- BHP. Sales staff amazed to see the exhaustive check list. They had to bring second Vehicle as first one is set aside by checklist.

Dealer: Joshi Autozone, Industrial Area Phase-II. Dealing Staff is friendly & cooperative.good environment in showroom. Got Teflon coating, mats and car cover free. 4 free service coupons.

Additions made with costs:

At showroom on the same day=Additional waranty for 30 months for 4600/-. Anti rust coating. Nippon theft alarm system

Dealer Service is Good.

Seat covers, sound system were got fitted from outside sources.Unable to locate anttena wire.

Initial Experience

In the first week I have driven 240 Kms in City. FE Not checked so far. But seems to be not less as the Fuel meter is moving backward not at much speed.

Driving Experience is excellent. Twice I was warned by Traffic police for overspeeding. I could not feel that I was overspeeding. At 60 Km/h speed, It is felt that I am driving at 30 km/h.

No jerks in while crossing/driving bad roads & potholes.

Quite comfortable car.

AC is good.Starting trouble once but that was because of my fault as told by Tasc service manager.I pushed Race pedal twice thrice before ignition.

Satisfied with decision for Tata Xeta.

Will post another review shortly

Xeta GLG

So far so good !!
Apr 16, 2008 06:14 PM 4900 Views

I bought my Xeta GLS 1.2 in Nov. 07 through CSD. Since this is my first car and I made my decision after reading reviews in Mouthshut and to some extent after a research on various similar cars like Alto, Zen, Vegon R, Santro but I wanted a car that can acomodate atleast three people comfortably at the back seat therefore I was more keen on Xeta. First three months I could not drive my car and had a lot of aprehensions but now for last two months I am driving my car regularly. Intially I used to drive at whatever speed I could go for and I used to get 15 km per ltr(Rs. 500/- for 10.5 ltr for 158 kms) in Delhi city drive(without AC). Few days back I read in mothshut that somebody is driving Xeta at 50km/hr and I noticed same on my car's windshield that suggests 1st gear- 10km/hr, 2nd-20km, 3rd-30km, 4th-40km and 5th gear - 50km/hr is good speed to get optimum milage.

You will be surprised to to know now I'm getting 17.5 km/ltr and I am driving in same traffic.

Can anyone suggest. How can I use AC to get good milage? Some people suggest not to use AC in lower gear and should not switch it on and off often.

How about switching off the engine on red-lights. Some people say one should not switch off engine it you have to stop for more than 3 mints and if you restart after a minute or less then 3 minutes.

Please suggest some more fuel saving tips.

My XETA GLG,
Mar 27, 2008 09:06 AM 5409 Views

I am writing this review after driving my car for more than 5 months. I have Indica Xeta GLG. It has front power window, body coloured bumpers, fog lamps, rear defogger and HVAC system. I have cavern grey colour for which I had to wait for arround 1 month for delivery as the colour was not available. Till now no problems faced with 4300 KMS on the odo. Initially it used to give a mileage of 10KMPL but post first service it is giving steary 12-13kmpl in Kolkata city roads. Went for a long drive of 300KMS and it returned a mileage of 16 KMPL with 50% AC on.

The interiors of the car is all beige which makes you feel that you are driving a premium car.For me running the car is Fill it, Shut It, and Forget it. The maximum speed I have gone on this car is 135KMPH and it is rock stady at that speed also.

I would like to recommend this car to everyone who has a budget of 3.5 Lakhs and wants a good spacious car.

I did a tankful of Extra premium to check the mileage post the long drive and I was astonished to find that the car returned a mileage of 15.2 KMPL on calcutta roads with full traffic and 20-30% AC on. Till now I am totally satisfied with the car and no problems yet. Next week I will take the car for second service and then I will update the comments about the service center and also the post service performance.

When I am writing this review I am arrround half a world away from my car and so I am missing it the most. I am right now in US and my car is in India. What I am going to write is about a small incident to show how strong the body of the car is. Arround 3 months back a taxi banged right side back door of the car. The noise was too loud and I thaught that the entire door must have caved in. When I got out of the car to check the damage I found out that the door has few dents. Next day when I took the car to the mechanic to repair (I dont drive dented and damaged vehicles) and the mechanic opened the door completely, I found out that the side impact beams in the doors protected the door from loosing its shape. It took the mechanic around 3hrs and 45 mins to repair the dents by hammering, the metal was too strong. The mechanic also told that because of the beams the door is ok, had it been other cars, the door had to be replaced. So what I think is it one of the safest car in its class. Will keep updaing this post once I am in India and driving the car.

Indica Xeta Comfort Zone
Mar 24, 2008 08:47 PM 5529 Views

I bought my Indica Xeta GLS a month back. For the first month I was driving my car with a speed limit of 50kmph as suggested by the experts at the dealer. I was very anxious to get through with the first service of my car. I didnt even bothered to check the milage in this period. As soon as I completed the first servicing the monster within me was alive and so does the the called Xeta GLS.

I decided to go to Shirdi on a very short notice and decided to take up my first road trip by Car outside Mumbai. I topped up my tank with HP-Power fuel and started the drive.First time on Highway and that too at the night time. I started accelerating with AC on. I never realised when my Car went to 100kmph. It was so noise free and so steady to notice the speed.

Car speed will never make you realize that you are driving so high. The SPACE in Indica so much that you cant get it any car of this segment.AC is also very powerful

Pick-Up is very nice.Driver and passenger seat is confortable and so does the rare seats. A tall guy can seat very ARAAM SE. even if the front seats are pulled back.

Though the Car comes under small segment car its a HUGE car in it segment and you can get the feeling of the same as soon as you log into the car.

The looks within are amazing though the plastic quality can be improved.

The boot-sapace is also amazing. And you even have a lamp in the boot.

Head light are nice and clear. You even have the head-light leveler.

Power stearing is amazign as well.

Breaks are good.

I can say the Car is the best deal in small segment.

Last but not the list is the mileage of the Car.

Trust me I got an average of 17.5kmpl on highway. Yes its 17.5kmpl

I would like to suggest to go for SPEED/POWER instead of going for a normal Unleaded fuel as it makes a lot of difference.

A terrific Car - i've got one ... SATISFIED
Mar 17, 2008 11:20 AM 5843 Views

I bought this car after a lot of comparisons. This's my 3rd Car and the comfort I get in driving it is terrific. Plus Tata's have done really a lot on reliability so it hasn't bugged me at all during all my driving.

Also I did not have to purchase anything other than the music system as an accessory. everything is supplied by the company which in case of other cars you have to purchase.

During the monsoon I as a routine I thought of getting the underbody PVC coated, because generally cars do not have this protection, To my surprise, INDICA already had the coating and it saved me a good 4000 bucks.

In case of driving at speeds, you feel control on the car as its road grip is very good.

I strongly recommend this car because of its Space, Safety, Performance - surely more car per car.

New Xweta 2008 Model Starting Trouble
Mar 07, 2008 02:18 PM 7053 Views

Hi ,

I bought an indica Xeta on Feb 18 2008 VST motors Anna nagar Chennai .Well I am not impressed  with the showroom or it  way of handling customer but I one of the executive person Pradeep is doing an excellent Job. On the first day I went to VST and I felt bad about their customer care and dropped my idea to buy car from VST .After two days I met Prdeep in a road show  and his response was superb and that  let me do business with VST  again  .

I am happy with comfort , AC , Performance and space in the car everything matching to my expectations.

The big problem I am facing with this car is the morning starting. I live in Chennai so I don't think out side temperature is problem. Since its petrol car I expect a quick start in the morning. Unfortunately this is not happening in my case .I have to try for almost 2-3 minutes to get it started. Once it gets started then it’s a super car fro the whole day...

If any of you know how to fix this morning starting trouble it would be a great help for me.

Thanks

"B" segment car in "A" segment Price!!

Please rate my review, This will help others:

I have purchased the car 6 months back and a happy owner.

However I knew most of them which I will be mentioning below before purchasing my car:

Cons:

=

  1. Blind Spot:

-----------------

Many of you may not be familiar with this. But Best design comes with less

blind spot. This car is not very good self driven friendly. This car Needs lots

of attention while driving in busy road (for e.g. Chennai where not many people

are aware about  road culture) as it has some design fault therefore BIG

blind spot on the right side. Be careful while taking a right turn.

2.Power Steering:

----------------------

Not as powerful as it requires. You will be feeling like maneuvering a maruti

800.

3.Door electrical switch:

-------------------------------

You may have to change immediately with some good switch. It will surely not

work after few weeks.

4.Windscreen wiper:

------------------------

There is flaw in design the wipers. They are seating so close to each other, it

may touch one blade to other during any weather change (Heat effect). As a

result, one of the wiper may break or malfunction.

*Caution to buyer: Please check the gap between the wiper while buying the

car. *

5.Power weight ratio:

-----------------------------

Even though the car is having powerful engine, you will not find it so.

  1. Tuning issue:

---------------------

Not a factory made well tuned car unlike any other MNC cars. You need to drive

a lot to make the engine smooth. For sure after couple of months driving, you

will be happy.

7.Hand Gear:

------------------

Bad Ergonomy.  The position of the lever is not correctly placed as

a result; you need to apply lot of shoulder power to change the gear. You may

develop some chest/shoulder pain or sprain (stiff neck) where you need to

change the gear very frequently.

Secondly, the gear is very tight. For ladies, please do a test drive and

specially check if the gear shifting is ok for you.

::::::: Please rate my review, This will help others::::::

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pros:

======

  1. Tyre:

---------

R13, Radial. Very comfortable

  1. Break:

----------

Power break. Tata is excellent in this technology.

  1. Suspention:

------------------

Very sturdy Telescopic coil suspension. Another great feature in this price

range.

4.AC:

------

Very powerful in this price range.

  1. Dashboard:

------------------

Futuristic. Looks like premium car.

  1. Interior:

------------

Very standard seat Belt. Anti-theft mechanisms are in the doors. Difficult for thieves

to put hook inside through window glass and open the door.

  1. Exterior:

-------------

Finishing is very good. High standard touch up.

8.Safty:

--------

Do not attach any  more Armor for your car as this car has a crash zone. During the head-on

collision, it crashes and keeping you safe. (Remember Newton’s 2nd law??)

Recommendation:  Good buy in the price range.

Now you may be wondering why I choose to buy this car? You can mail me, to get my reasoning. Otherwise I will come up with another review shortly
