Real Stuff Under Hood--Truly Indian &Goin Global
Sep 18, 2006 01:10 PM 6147 Views

Hi Folks!!

Indian_Patriot is back again with some more things to share about Indica V2 Xeta.....I want people out there to really know about this great and indigenious vehicle as much as possible...I will be happy if My reviews motivate atleast one or two to buyt this great car..I basically come from a middle class strata of Our society and we all know that atleast 50%of the Indian population is from this strata. And,I really know how much one thinks before investing their hard earned money into a Car or House or to the matter of fact most of the things.Coz'We dont have the luxury of taking a RISK with that hard earned money. With My previous and this review I want to tell people that its really safe to invest their money into this car.

Coming to the point,I am loving to drive this car and kinda getting addicted to it as every day passes by.Ive heard that Indicas have a hard reverse gear..ie;u need to put a little xtra effort to push the gear..But,as far as I know after driving this machine Xeta..Thats a MYTH...The gear changing of Indica Xeta is very smooth and effortless..This car is goin global...Tata's Indica is selling like hot cakes in the South Africa especially...Indica V2 has also taken on the European Automobile Market Giants and gained a foothold into the hatchback segment and believe Me this car hit off like anything in Europe the day it was launched...Imagine,an Indian car competing wid the Giants..Thats not a small feat...In times when foreign giants are flocking the Indian market, this one indigenious car is gaining stronghold in the Africa & European market...Now thats some food for thought...Think Y???Its proving itself everywhere and yes its very pocket friendly....

So folks!!!! If ur planning to buy this car..Go ahead and buy..Dont think twice....Indica V2 Xeta, Indica V2 Turbo(For those Racy Minds ;-) )..They r the best bets in every aspect...

CURRENTLY TATA, LATER SUZUKI....
Sep 15, 2006 04:20 PM 5697 Views

THE CAR:

THE NEW INDICA V2 TURBO IS ESSENTIALLY A GOOD CAR. THE BEST THINGS BOUT IT ARE THE PRICING AND THE SPACE INSIDE. THE SPACE INSIDE A TATA INDICA IS MORE THAN THAT OF MANY OTHER CARS. IT IS THE FIRST CAR TO HAVE A TURBO CHARGED ENGINE WHICH IS QUITE REFINED. IT IS A GREAT HIGHWAY CRUISER AND MOST OF THE CARS SEEN ON HIGHWAYS ARE INDICAS AND THAT IS BECAUSE OF ITS GREAT FUEL EFFICIENCY. IT COMES IN THREE VARIANTS DLE,DLS AND DLX. THE COLORS AVAILABLE ARE TACKY AND ANY COLOR LOOKS GOOD ON THE CAR. INTERIORS OF THE CAR IS QUITE BASIC IN DLE AND DLS BUT IF YOU WANT A FULLY LOADED VERSION, THEN GO FOR THE DLX. IT IS JUST A BIT PRICY BUT YOU DO GET MORE FOR WAT YOU PAY.

THE COMPARISON:

THE CAR CAN BE COMPARED TO THE SWIFT FOR MOST OF PEOPLE ASK FOR THE COMPARISON BETWEEN THE TWO. THOUGH SWIFT IS A PETROL CAR, IT OFFERS A GREAT BANG FOR THE BUCK. IT COMES IN 4 VARIANTS ie. LXi,VXi,VXi WITH ABS AND ZXi WHICH IS THE LOADED VERSION. THE CAR CAN BE A MORE SERIOUS COMPETITOR TO THE INDICA WHEN SWIFT'S DIESEL IS OUT NEXT YEAR. THE CAR HAS A DISTINGUISHED STYLE AND ONE KNOWS THE DEMAN FOR THE CAR. IT IS THE MOST CHEAPEST CAR IN INDIA TO PROVIDE AIRBAGS AND ABS WHICH I THINK IS A NECESSARY OFTION FOR INDIAN TRAFFIC.

PERSONAL VERDICT:

CURRENTLY, TATA'S INDICA IS OF A BETTER VALUE THAN MARUTI SUZUKI'S SWIFT COZ INDICA OFFERS A TURBO CHARGED ENGINE FOR A LESSER PRICE. BUT IF ONE IS PATIENT, HE/SHE CAN WAIT FOR THE SWIFT DIESEL DUE NEXT YEAR.

Buy More Problems Per Car
Sep 14, 2006 12:27 PM 7069 Views

Hello Guys, I been coming tomouthshut for last 2 year, read almost all the reviews on the cars. Although I amelectronics engineer but have a passion for cars.

In my family we have 4 cars (2-WagonRLxi, 1- IKON 1.6 Zxi and 1- Indica V2 DLS) and all the cars are almost 3-4yrsold and most of them have covered around 35000 KM.

But I must admit Indica is the WORSTof the lot.

People who are buying or thinkingof buying the Indica is mainly falling for its looks, some features and costeffectiveness of Diesel.

The car lacks power, it almost godead when driven with AC. To accelerate with AC you either have to shift downor turn the AC off for that moment. Turningthe AC On and Off frequently show problems with the AC, the Cooling Fan and electricalsystems.

During monsoon you will findproblem with its Dynamo system due to the water logging.

( I had to repair my dynamoarmature twice)

Having this car is like spendinglots of time in garage. Every new problem crops up every alternate day. And spending lots of money along with it.

To provide you a short comparison,

Suppose you traveling 60Km/day

With Indica you spend Rs164approx ( 13kmpl and Rs 35.4/l of Diesel)

With WagonR you spend Rs 212 approx (14.5km/land Rs 51/l of petrol)

For 20day running you spend Rs 3280 for Indica but Rs 4240 forWagonR The difference is about Rs960/ month.

But the main problem is the maintence cost of4yr old WagonR is almost Zero but for Indica it around Rs1500/month atleast +your time/ headache in the garage and also take into consideration the amount, which you paid more to buy this diesel car over the petrol car of that segment.

Taking all these thinks intoconsideration just sit and think for a while.

Guys trust me, don’t go for thiscar. After doing only 34250Km for my Indica work on the suspension needed to bedone (which will be around Rs11000).

You can go for this car if youare thinking of selling it off after 1 year or 15000 KM or using it as business purposes (taxi).

Please feel free to email me at whistler_cal@coolgoose.com

Comparison with WagonR is doneas I own it. It would be similar for Santro or Zen

V2 LXI Petrol: 10 headaches in every 3 months
Sep 11, 2006 10:03 AM 6063 Views

I feel like writing a book titled "Indica V2 Petrol - 10 headaches for every service". The fact is that every time I go in for a service I have atleast 10 problems listed for the service engineer to take care of in my Indica V2 LXI petrol (fully loaded). I had bought this piece of what I thought was a beauty in Oct 2004. Looks can really be decieving.

A couple of months after I bought this car, I had this wierd "racing" probelm where if I hit the clutch in an idle state (neutral) the car used to race to 2000 RPM automatically as if one pressed the accelerator. Sometimes I could take it to the fourth gear (30 kmph) without having to step on the accelerator at all. The problem faded after the first servicing but I sometimes get the same problem where it goes to around 1500 RPM automatically. Sometimes, usually during the monson seasons, the central locking does not work.

There have been numerous other issues with the car. Just recently I had an issue with the power window where the front LHS window pane just refused to wind up to close. I had to take it to the dealer's service centre (WASAN in Chembur) where I was told that I will have to replace the winder/motor responsible for the "power" of the power window. This assembly has two parts to it - one the winder and the other the motor. The motor drives the winder electrically which pushes/pulls the glass to open/close. It is but obvious that the winder would be a mechanical part and the motor is the electircal part. I had purchased an extended warranty of 3 years which expires in 2008. They outrightly rejected the warranty claim and thier reply was "extended warranty coveres electical failure of electrical parts only". I could not make the head and tail of the explanation and hence had to send mails and argue on the point and it is still pending since almost 2 weeks now. I had to pay up the amount of 3200 Rs from my own pocket.

Bottom line, if you are expecting too much out of this car - beware. And if you are expecting that the service center guys are your friends and they will help you in every way to ensure your car is problem free then beware beware beware. These guys are there to do business and will try every possible way to get money out of you. The power window part costed only Rs 2579 but I had to pay 250 Rs labour and almost 350 Rs in VAT/service taxes etc.

Though this car has given me a lot of issues lately, I am attached to it and still love it since its my first car and I just love driving it when it works fine.

Would recommend this if its your first car where you need space and you have low budget.

I like this car
Sep 09, 2006 10:18 PM 5125 Views

I bought Tata Indica DLG Turbo in Jan 23rd 2006, I bought this car for Fuel Economy and Space. I am getting a very good milage of 18 kms to 20 kms in highway and 12 to 14 kms within the city (Coimbatore). Pickup is very good. I am really enjoying this car low running costs. This car gives you very good comfort in front seat and in rear seat . Last month I went to Ooty in this car, it climbs well, one has to maintain high rpm while climbing. For long drive this car gives excellent comfort, centre of gravity is good, it is very stable. I went to Madurai and Cochin in this car, it is so comfortable, you dont feel like you travelled so long.I am not much comfortable to drive this car in congested streets. I like very much to drive this car in high ways. This car may not be comfortable for people whose usage is only within the city.

Indica V2 Turbo old wine in new bottle
Sep 09, 2006 09:43 PM 5454 Views

Tata's latest offreing Indiaca V2 Turbo diesel engine is proving to be old wine in New bottle.

We have been promised a smooth riding in combination with petro mileage, but its all foos.. within 3 months.

i usually like big cars , and generally go on long drives say over 600 kms in a month for 3-4ays.

this time, i have been advised to use indica V2 the real sturdy desi car . I got indica V2 diesel Turbo 3 months back exactly . I drove it around 4500 kms in 3 months and beilive you me my credit card bill for the fuel is over 8000/- ie @33 Rs per liter diesel I have poured 250 lts of diesel. . As promisied by the dealer & the car my turbo indica should be flew on an average 18-20 kmpl in a/c but it drove me 18 kmpl in non a/c so you can imagine in a/c what mileage I have been got.

look wise it does not look very appealing, you have always a feeling of driving a taxi, for rear seat its pleasure riding with spacious leg room.

Turbo engine is quite helpful in reducing noise polution one has to face while driving desi diesel vehicles. Power steering is not as smooth as other cars in this category.

Switches and hinges, a/c vents are not of that standard.

The all inside interiors are pathetic with all plastic look.

Side mirror is too fatty and alway causes of scractch to others.

Exterior look is quite ok, colours are very elegant but one does not have much choice to choose from. storage is huge one can take bunddle of loads in storage space.

in sum up if you are looking at a sturdy hatch back with a feeling of driving some thing big its a an ideal. dont go with mileage comparison, it does not pay always...........................

Below are my observations in review number 2 after 1000 Kms in DLX Turbo.

(1)Mileage- 14Km/Litre in Bangalore city.

(2)New car had three issues (a) Fuel gauge used to work twice in a day only.

Actions taken:First the connections were checked, then fault was found

in the intstrument cluster.Cluster arrived in 3

days.Cluster replaced on warranty.I am happy now.

(b) LHS front power window used either get stuck or fdance it's way up

in a diagonal manner.

Actions taken:Dealer workshop rectified twice, but reccuring probelm

made them change the glass machine itself.I am happy

now."Touch Wood."

(c)There are handles for the passengers to hold on the roof sides. There

isn't one at the drivers side. The holes for the handles were left

open,wtihout the plastic caps.

Actions taken:On pointing out, they first said that in a couple of days the

caps should arrive and we'll fix up, but then suddenly they

found stock and plugged the holes.I am happy.

(3)The pick-up is excellent.Turbo comes to play by 2000 rpm.In the 5th gear at 85 Km/hr, egine is as smooth as butter.

(4)Honestly speaking, I am more concerned on the engine performance rather than the above minor issues that are covered under warranty.

(5)Please add Iftex diesel additive during the running in miles for sure and continue if you wish to do so.

(6)Another minor issue is of the speakers provided by the company. There is a mild cracking noise for the "bass" intensive music.I am a bit sensitive on this, but others may not bother at all for this.Anyway,I intend to have better speakers in the near future, so no issues.

(7)The roof top of my car had a fine scratch which has been touched up before delivery.

(8)Space within is royal. It can be compared to a Ford Ikon.I am not exaggerating.Lavish boot space.

(9) I love to see the instrument cluster and the power window switches glowing in the night along with the feel of the leather steering wheel and gear cover. It is classy for INR 4.71 lakhs paid.

(10)The leather steering wheel cover, gear cover and the beautiful digital odometer and instrument cluster, with light intensity control makes it look classy.

Car of the decade,indica dls

hi

iam very much passionate about small cars since iam at age 5 years.last year I have bought the new indica dls .its truely a big mans car, solid body, good inner space, large boot space, comfort 5 people space and ample driving clearence and iam very much delited to have a car like indica.only disadvantage is the inner body catches dust when travelling in rural roads as there is a slight space in between the four doors at the bottom.the fuel consumption is very much economical and I really recommand to have indica who travel 1500 kms in a month and last is has a rooring look and whats more do we expect ?????its all about lage raho... indica .

its always safe we drive this car at 80-90 kmph and iam sure it gives u agood consumption .its ac also works good.i personnly prefer to have turbo diesel rather than any ordinary diesel and more over please don't try reliance diesel it has reduced my milage and pickup too gone down.

plz keep away ur vehicle away from reliance diesel...

happy & safe driving, always remember some one is waiting at home.

Recommended, with a lot of caveats

I recently bid goobye to my Indica V2 after more than 5 years of

use.Thought my comments could be useful to those who are in the

same boat as I was five years ago: buying their first car, and

seriously considering this Tata diesel.

A few things first, so that you could assess whether the perspective

and experience from which I write these comments are valid in your

context.

Except during the first year of ownership, I rarely ever drove this car

personally. Since I am a bad driver, I had a driver to drive me

around.I hear that the car had been improved substantially in recent

years --turbocharged engine etc -- so my opinion on driving experience

may not apply.

The car did 70000 KM. Approximately a fifth of that would be on the highway.

The car was used mostly for a (long) city commute.

Nowcoming to the point: among the small cars, this one probably is the

least easy to drive and maneuver. On the few occasions I drove

it, I found it underpowered. Always beaten by Santros and Zens at

traffic intersections. Pedals took time getting used to. Clutch was

especially fuzzy: the engine would often die under my foot

becauseI'dn't apply sufficient pressure or release the clutch too

soon. I maybe a bad driver, but I did not face these problems with any

other small car, and do not face them with my new Corolla. Hence

my point: if you are an inexperienced driver lacking confidence, this

car is not for you.

Fuel consumption: about 12 in city and 15 on highway.

Exterior :Flimsy. Got to be, given the amout of weight this car pulls. Any

cyclist can drive a dent in your Indica. If it breaks yourheart to see

your car disfugured, don't buy this one. It has a tendency to attract

cyclists and bikers.

Interior: Plastics: so-so. Instruments and positioning: okay. Color scheme: not bad. A/C: ok.

Noise: tremendous. Even with windows rolled up.

Vibrations: Will rock you, surely. :-)

Space:FANTASTIC. No other B segment car gives you as much

space as the Indica does. If you are driven around and hence short

on space, this is the best small car for you. Sit in the rear seat and relax.

Plenty of leg room. Extremely nice seats faciliating a comfortable

posture: you don't have to sink to the floor as in other cars. Plenty

of room in the front seats too. When I was upgrading, I had a tough

time choosing my next sedan, because I have gotten used to Indica's

space and no C segment car gives you as much space as the Indica does!

In fact, the Corrolla's rear seat is not a lot wider than the

Indica's, if wider at all. Your family will love this car's

roominess.

Ride comfort: Extremely good for a small car.The suspension is the

best in its class. Handles potholes with aplomb.Wonderful while

cruising on the highway. While good on rough surfaces,

this car comes truly alive at 80kmph on smooth roads. Very

stableat high speeds.

Safety: Probably as good (or bad) as any other small cars, but

definitely feels safer. Especially on the highway.

Maintenance:Started costing me a fortune from the second year on. Into fourth

year, the situation was truly bad: went to the garage once in every two

months for some reason or the other. During its lastd

ays with me, left me in the lurch on the road on a couple of occasions

with breakdowns.

Verdict:Mixed feelings. I loved the car for the space, for comfortable ride,

but hated it for its lack of realiability and high running costs.

My recommendation: Go for it if you do not mind the inconveniences like

noise, vibrations, an occasional trip to the garage etc, but get ridofit after

2 (max 3) years. And of course, you'd go for this car only

because this is the only Rs 4 lakh package that gives you the same

amount of space and the same ride comfort as a C segment car.

If you want a low-maintenance, fun-to-drive car used only in the city,

the Indica is not for you.

Indica V2 Turbo - Hatch on Steroids
Aug 27, 2006 04:04 PM 6527 Views

I have 3 Indica's in my family. Guess that makes me a crazy Tata buff! I have the Indica V2 (2003), (2004) and (2006) models. The first two have the naturally aspirated IDI engines and the last one has the TDI (Turbo Diesel - Intercooler)

The space inside is great! No elbow jostling at all. The rear seat can sit 3 comfortably. The boot is not too spacious and is suitable only for weekend getaways.

Tata dealers are not so hot - they don't match-up to Maruti and Hyundai dealers.

My car gives me about 13 kmpl in Bangalore traffic and that's good considering that my driving borders on the aggressive, with auto drivers ensuring that my adrenalin keeps pumping.

The seats offer good back support and are adjustable for rake and tilt. The rear seats are double folding - offering a flat bed luggage area - great if only 2 people are travelling.

Reliability has not been an issue since the V2 - The indica is the 3rd highest selling car in the country - that speaks for itself.

Looks is a subjective area but on the whole the car is quite pleasing to the eye and the new colours being offered are good. The 14" wheels on the turbo model make the wheel arches look better filled out than the other models which offer the 13" wheels. This also improves the braking and handling of the car.

Having driven various avatars of this car, I must state here that Tata keeps improving the car. There is a remarkable difference between 2003 and 2006. Some improvements are very small and subtle, but go a long way in making the car better.

Driving Impressions:

This is the best part! Anyone who has driven an indica earlier knows that on a full load with the AC switched on, the car used to be about as responsive as a beached whale! Overtaking on a busy 2 lane highway involved switching the AC off, shifting to a lower gear, gritting your teeth and saying a silent prayer before the attempt to pass.

All this has changed with the TDI engine. the turbo kicks in at about 1800 RPM and this gives the car tremendous driveability both in the city and on the highway. The torque has improved so much that at about 80 kmph on the highway, an overtaking manouver can be accomplished without shifting down from 5th gear. A little increase on the throttle pressure is all that is required. The advantage of the torque improvement in city driving is also obvious. The car happily goes about in 3rd gear at about 20-25 kmph with the AC switched on. This is a huge improvement in the city driveability of the car.

Cost Advantage and Myth of Diesel Maintenance:

Typically for most cars, the diesel version costs more than the petrol version. This premium is recovered only if the car runs for a minimum of 1500 kms/month. But cost-wise the indica compares quite competitively to the swift / santro. After this if you consider the fuel efficiency and the lesser cost of diesel - the math is simple.

The car requires to be maintained as per the manufacturer guideline and no other special care needs to be taken.

All said and done, in about 6 months of ownership, I have already done 3 trips of the weekend variety covering about 600 kms in each trip, in my Indica Turbo. The experience was great. The very wide network of Tata dealers and authorised service stations also inspires great confidence in taking this hot hatch on long trips.

For detailed specs visit: https://tatamotors.com

Addendum 06th March 2007:

I have finished more than a year with this car and taken two more weekend trips to Ooty and Coorg.

Flawless on the highway, but the Ooty ghats gave my left hand a workout - gears need to be worked more frequently than any petrol car.

There is a slight vibration from the dashboard - this started after taking a nasty bump at 80kmph.

All switch gear, power windows and electronics working fine.

The biggest grouse I have is with the wiper blades. They really make a racket! Bad quality rubber!

Overall a satisfiying one-year of ownership.

Chennai India
A brand new feeling in a Diesel Car!
Aug 15, 2006 05:21 PM 6319 Views

I bought this new Tata Indica Turbo DLG(Cherry Red) three months back. Initially as everybody feels my opinion about Indica cars was it was a low powered veichle. But when I test drove this new car I had to change my opinion.

Here are some of my own experience about this car.

Performance

------------------

  • The preformance is far more better than the old Tata Indica.

  • Once the turbo charger gets into action you won't feel that u are driving a diesel car.

  • Good diesel car for city driving.

  • In High ways its just too powerful for a A to B segment car. It easily touches 140 kmph... the max it has reached is 150 kmph (though its not advisable to stress the car so much).

  • Ground clearence is certainly improved than the old Indica.

Fuel consumption

-------------------------

  • In city conditions it easily gives 15 kmpl with AC

  • On a long drive it gives 18-19 kmpl with AC.

Stearing & Handling

----------------------------

  • The hydraulic power stearing is too good for city driving.

  • One has to be careful at high speeds coz the power steering doesn't seem to cut off at high speeds

  • Turning radius has to be improved.

Comfort

-----------

  • The height of the front two seats certainly seem to be higher than the old Indica and you can get a clear view of the road and the front end of the car while driving.

  • Its just too spacious for an economy car.

Luggage space

----------------------

  • One cannot expect a big boot space in this car. its just as small as a Wagon R.

A/C

----

  • One cannot say that the A/C is very powerful.. but its good enough and the cooling is pretty fast.

Interiors

-----------

  • Interiors have to be certainly improved though it looks much better than the old Indica.

  • Lack of beige interiors does not add aesthetic value to the interiors.

Extra fittings recommended

-------------------------------------

  • I ve put Alloy wheels provided by the company... It not only adds to the looks but also improves the mileage of the car.

To be improved

-----------------------

  • Turning Radius

  • Interiors

  • Body toughness

  • The top end version DLX turbo has an inbuilt cassette player which is outdated. No one would prefer for going for that player... when DVD and MP3 players have started dominating the car audio market. That is one of the reasons why I opted for the DLG version instead of the DLX.

  • Though improvements have been made in the gear box... its bit cranky.

  • It takes some time for the turbo to get into action. Till then we get a feeling its under powered.

  • When starting the car under cold condtions there is a rattling sound till the car covers some distance.

Will keep you posted on my experience with this worth owning car!

Tata Indica XETA test driven
Aug 12, 2006 06:35 PM 6425 Views

I wish to begin this blog by blessing tata motors engineers who managed to transform the Indica band wagon from a cab to a total mean machine.

The first day I took a test drive, I swore to myself to purchase was the indica xeta model.

The reason i planned to shift from my 2004 september model to the petrol model is because of the poor pick up in diesel vehicles considering traffic conditions in hyderabad.

The first time I stepped on the gas pedal & voila!!! it was the meanest machine in its class, considering its a lakh of ruppes & odd cheaper than the competition cars of same class.

The machine sure churns out an average of 13.5 in the city with the AC running & 17.5 on the highway.

Considering an average running of 30kms a day, the running cost per km is Rs 4 per km which is Rs 120 per day & the average cost of diesel running cost works at Rs 2.5 per km & total of Rs 75 per day. The difference is Rs 45 per day works to Rs 16425 per annum ( you still save a lot in the difference of rs 1,00,000 in a period of 2 years, which is normal practice to calculate payback). These factors does not include higher & costlier maintenance for diesel cars compared to petrol vehicles.

The Xeta is really powerful, with great road grip & complimented with high power efficient braking. The brake booster gives an inspiring feeling when the front bonnet is opened.

The car is light for handling & feels more comfortable to travel than smaller cars of the same segment. The fabric & interiors could give a run to other cars a run for their money.

The car runs really smooth & there is no need to run to the mechanic for any repairs as the fuel system is managed by a microprocessor. The pick up is so predictable & so smooth that it gets your heart racing as you take pick up while overtaking. Overtaking most qualis, zen, scorpios & other cars is a breeze. Driving at an average speed of 90kmph, I was still able to cover over 80kilometres per hour. This is in sharp contrast to other cars which would average around 55 -65 kmph.

My advice is if you like driving, buy an indica xeta & if you feel petrol is a dicy affair trust me you wont mind the extra cost & I wish tata will also come up with a retrofit for petrol cars with lpg kits & also new models to be fitted with the same.

Please mail me more if you have any queries at rohan121@yahoo.com

Turbo is good
Aug 03, 2006 03:46 PM 5588 Views

Hi,

I bought a indica turbo DLG by November 2005 and till now a satisfied owner.

I am not very proficient in car mechanisms and learnt car driving very recently. But from the begining I like indica and was keen to buy one. I like it because of space, being economical(by diesel) and looks(yes, many disagree on this, but I like its look). People used to discourage by saying it has a dead slow pick up. But when I came to know about the Turbo version I felt very happy and bought it fianlly.

I am very happy with the Turbo version and it really performs well. In 9 months of usage I went to the dealer only for thr free service and I didnt have any other problem.

Regarding the speciality of the turbo version, i drove some normal Indicas also and realised that Turbo version really shows a difference in performance. The pick up gets zooming once it crosses 2000RPM and if on a long journey it flies.

Space-wise, it does not have many competition in its class. Ample room space in the front row and rear row makes it a comfortable car.

Economy is the star factor. It gives me 18kmpl on city roads and if going on a tour on highways it easily crossses 22 with AC.

Being a heavy car, its safer also than ultra light zen/alto.

One complaint many petrol car owners say is the sound of the diesel engine. I cant deny it, yes that is a tradeoff, but I dont think that as a big disadvantage. All diesel cars have it and even hi-fi cars like scorpio, safari, innova(diesel) cant control it much. If u switch on the AC and music system inside, it sounds the same like a petrol car. I mean, its not a reason to avoid this wonderful car.

Overall its a very good car, I would say.

Thanks,

Raja

There goes mine...
Aug 01, 2006 12:56 PM 5886 Views

Last time I commented on others review as I did not had any experience of this car though my dad’s gonna get one soon. Now im going in wit review as my dad finally let me test drive this car as we ve almost finalised it. Now starting off wit old indica DLS. Ive driven my couson’s indica v2 hell lot. Even took it to 130+ kmph on palm beach road, navi mumbai. The thing it lags is the pick up feel....power sez it all. I really had to work hard to get it going wit ac on. Pick up u feel like ur accelerating 800 on its 4th gear from standstill position. Its really bad. Just managable wit ac off but still not even close to maruti 800 (which I owe now). So wen my dad said indica is suiting his budget I was a little upset. Then I heard this turbo version. Got curious to check it out but my dad was against test riding a car which he is not sure 2 buy. I had to use some phylosophy’s and warnings abt indica’s pick up to make him let me test ride atleast turbo which he’s thinking. So I did that n finally settled wit it. Now to d point. My experience! Showroom ppl got the car to my place for test riding just 1 hr b4 I had 2 catch my train as my vacations were over. I backed d car shifted to 1st gear n launched the throttle. At 1st second twas almost like previous indica v2 but at d 2nd second a sudden jerk of power rushed into the machine n I felt like some horse kicked my car from back. Literally I felt like an external power rushing in. It was after that it left to non turbo versions far behind. No stopping from here on. I never realised I reached 70kmph in 3rd gear without noticing in normal traffic road. Engine sounds smooth. Dashboard features r rich with digital display n tachometer. Add power steering n power front window to that (for DLG n DLX only). Seats n riding position are quite comfortable. Ya its not as silent as 800 or alto etc. but sounds smooth. Its soothing to human ears. N wit light music or ac on u wont feel d sound. Now I turned on d AC at standstill. Now shifted 2 1st gear n rolled on. Surprisingly theres no such practical difference. Its running simply the same as witout ac. This is where I got impressed. Its performing better than 800, alto, zen, santro etc now. So now I can say tata’s hv done a good job wit this one. Due to lack of time wat I cudnt figure out is wats the max speed it can go. And wats d difference between dlg and dlx. we going for dlg. dlx is not suiting our budget. is it worth a decision or we have to stretch our budget. Wudnt like 2 although. My advice: all indica haters like me its time to change ur mind. theres a new performer from indica in town. Thank You, ArYaN

Indica Horor
Jul 09, 2006 04:07 PM 7938 Views

I am the sole user of an Indica DLS DL3CU9360 (Chassis # 600142AVZP11372; Engine # 4751D102AVZP06743) bought on 09 Feb 2004 (A-One Motors, Connaught Place LC/094/07570238051/0101) with extended warranty policy # 01-188577. This car was bought because I considered it a showpiece of Indian capabilities.

The car has always suffered from high emission and low pickup.

The car has only been sent to Tuli Motors, Ring Road, Raja Garden, New Delhi-110027 and Sanya Motors, C101, Mayapuri Industrial Area,Phase II, New Delhi-110064 for all servicing and required attention. No one but these two authorized service stations have ever tinkered with the machinery.

\n

Between 14-17 May 2004 Tuli Motors removed the Fuel pump (FIP) and installed a new (?) FIP at 5000km. The same has since been overhauled thrice; once by Tuli Motors on 04-06 Oct 2005 at 25409km, and twice by Sanya Motors on 09-13 Jun 2006 at 37041km and 20-24 Jun 2006 at 37253km. \n

\n

\nOn 02 Jul 2006\n, Sanya Motors opened the engine and replaced the Valve guide seals.

\n

\nThe problem persists and I am informed by Mr. Mandeep Singh of Sanya Motors on \nJuly 06, 2006 that I must get the engine overhauled (since it has developed a back pressure) and put in a new catalytic convertor at my expense. They claim that the car was already damaged when they received it. The car is still at Sanya motors and they can keep it.\n

\n

\nThus, I am supposed to get work worth Rs.30000/- done on a car which has largely been driven on \nDelhi roads, been tanked up only at reputed pumps, and done 37000kms and is still under extended warranty.

Throughout, Mr. Navneet Singh, Customer Care, Tata Motors has been kept informed.

Off the record, Mr. Sanjeev, GM, Sanya Motors has told me that such problems normally occur at about 180000kms; and that they manage to temporarily take care of the poblem by reducing the flow of diesel to the engine, thereby removing both the emission nd the power. I fear that the car has an engine that was used during the road tests when they launched the refreshing new Indica in January 2004. That is why no amount of repairs will make it roadworthy except temporarily.

Only Tyre Manufacturers can buy this CAR
Jul 08, 2006 08:30 PM 5832 Views

According the dealer's technical person's statement , if the tie rod ( which connects the two front wheel segment ) is slightly hit by the bumps the front tyres will wear upto the steel wires with in 100 KM.

Yes , it happened within 10,000 Km and the front left tyre burst out.

we complained by 4000+ KM , when there was a slight over wear in the inner peri. of front wheels.

they cherged for the wheel alighnment & said it was perfect.

after 7000+ KMs the wear appeared again, at that time we were long away from CITY( 200Kms away ) , we planned to check while return on the same day .

on the way of return the front left burst out, but the steering was stable even @ 60 KM/Hr. ( thanks Telco ) , when we approached for this problem to the dealer , they revealed the truth about the tie rod .

So what is the reliability for 4 Lack+ worth CAR within a year period ( within 10K Kms).

previously we had Esteem ( a low Profile vehicle than Indica ) drove more than 50K + it never gave this kind of problems even with rough roads .

Atleast they should provide some kind of protection to protect this rod .

It could avoid this Rs6,000/- damage .

Thanks

My second review for this car. the first one when I had just bought it. ofcourse it was full of praises, advantages, positive points. two months gone now, before I begin my second review, let me tell u this, it is going to be the same again.

7,500 kms in two months. its my pride. highway is the place for it. more the lanes, saner the traffic, better the kick.

spacious interiors for sure. easily accomodates 5 adults. in fact. definitely not comparable to that of getz but a tough competition for swift. the dlx has a extremely plesant seat covers and leather wrapper steering does more than enticing u to drive.

dealers has not been much of a problem. but it is natural of people cribbing about bad dealership when there is monopoly. take in case of bangalore. with just 3 dealers for the entire bangalore, dealers tend to be intransigent.

fuel consumption is on higher side. I get around 16kmpl on highway @ 90km average speed. and 13kmpl in city. Hardly anything can be done. sometimes u cant have the cake and eat it too. either u need power or settle for an alto ;) (no offense / hard feelings)

the car scores high on comfort except for a few things that have been condoned. except for the placement of the power window switches in the front. co-driver often is disturbing the driver whenever he needs to meddle with his window. the cup holders in the glove compartment does not seem to be the optimum place for it. mobile holder in the doors would have been a great advantage. the adjustable headrests in the rearseat are a nice addition.

i better not speak about reliability this soon. as of now I havent faced any sort of problems. god forbid I face one.

Looks are above average, not good. lets face the reality. I dont pay the price of aston martin either. the steel borders are nice. the fog lamps give a distinctive touch to the car. alloy wheels are definitely embellishing, but not sure how cost effective it is. also alloy wheels are a lot more delicate. small things have be taken care of. leather wrapped steering, anti glare inner rear view mirror are all value additions enhancing the driving comforts.

Decided to buy a small car this march.went scouring around for one.when I buy a car I do a research meaning a proper one.i test rode all the cars in the market (mid sized and small ones), and read a thousand reviews in the net and magazines(overdrive and autocar).my requirement was the following.

1.fuel efficient.

2.spacious

3.power and speed

we looked at the scorpio first.the car was good albiet a little jumpy test rode it was about to throw up after applying the brakes.i felt it was a tad bit more expensive than its worth.then looked at the swift.i read reviews and based on what they said the car is not as fuel effcient and it was ought to be.moreovr there were so many on chennai roads that theyd become the new 800.then went to look at accent crdi.what a car it was fell in love at first sight and drive.the interior was pretty decent the engine had more grunt the a bull the car was simply a rocket. But alas my budget didnt allow it or id have to wait for another 4 months which I was not prepaed to.then heard about tatas new indica turbo.knocked on the doors of tata dealer VST motors.even before that I was very suspect about the car .reading about how bad tata cars were how theyd literally fall to pieces hoow unrefiend they were blah blah blah.evn the sales executive was not very helpful .they were the most unenthusiastic lot.the best being the maruti and scorpio dealers (they keep calling you every day since you visited their showroom till you buy their car).so finally I got to test ride tata INDICA turbo .my first impressions were there is huge misinformation campaign going on tata cars .people just hate their cars dont know why.this car is a rocket.the first gear is short(very short).then you hit the second gear the moment you hit 2k in rpm wham.the turbo kicks in and you get as stupid smile on your face.its a rocket.then I had to buy this car.the quality of the plastic in the interior was not very good, but for a disel car that gives 20km per litre and moves like a rocket for a price of 4.63 lakhs it was damn good deal to miss.

ive read a lot of reviews in this site and am sick of people whining about their cars.theyre never satisfid they want a merc for the price of a 800.come onnn.ive had the car for 3 weeks now and ive become addictd to the diesel clatter and boom.i bought the DLX version .the only grouse was the noise from the fan belt which is a very loud when the engine is coldbut goes awy when the engine heats up.took it to the service station and was rectified in jiffy.you cannot believe how good this car is.it pulls at 80km even at third gear.so for any potential buyers of this car go ahead you making a wise decision amy be the car is not that refined but who can get u a top of the line diesel car for 4.5 lakhs .and now you have another factor to think about price of petrol.THIS IS MY FIRST REVIEW SO PLEASE EXCUSE MY ENGLISH SKILLS.

Indica - Its Certainly TRUE
Jun 05, 2006 09:42 PM 7290 Views

In simple terms my verdict is go for it if you don’t have a higher budget, want to contain recurring expenditure on fuel and still enjoy decent comforts of a car.

I bought my first car an Indica V2 DLG ON March 9th 2006 and as I do this review its getting serviced for the first time. After registering 5300 KM on the speedometer Indica hasn’t made me to question my decision.

Driving the 1400CC Diesel after a brief experience on Dad’s 800 wasn’t a very tiring effort though a noisy one. But then thats less to do with the engine and more with tuning of my ears. Indica’s Diesel engine is no different from its other cousins in the same category when it comes to its noisy attributes. As servicing days turned round the corner I felt an increase in noise. However when I tried my hands & ears on friend’s Indica the difference wasn’t much bothering.

With fuel prices peaking, a mileage of 16-18 Kmpl on diesel was an enjoyable math. I treaded a cautious path and took care of all the parameters that might have effected the mileage but did not witness a consistent performance from the car in this department. Fueling was at the same station, average speed was maintained but mileage was on a roller coaster ride. It gave as a low as 14 per liter and a high of 19 per liter.

The area where Indica gives little jitters is the gear box. At times while shifting, the gear lever displays lot of friction and shuffles with a stiffening rigidity. It becomes all the more bothering when you have to come from 4th to 2nd in an urgent scenario. However this is very rear but still good enough to raise the concern to the service engineer. Watch my update after I get back the car. Initially all the feet pedals burn lot of your fat but smoothen up over a period of time. But comparing both petrol and diesel pedals to each other is as ridiculous as comparing baseball to cricket.

When it comes to space Indica certainly is big hearted. Having the widest of shoulder space in its range, Indica certainly doesn’t make a 5 seated drive a ghetto experience. Push the front seats back and even Big B can stretch his legs to comfort. And while he does that the rear seat passengers need not worry for bruises on their knees. Three people in the rear seat would not spark a property row. If compared, the boot space is not that accommodative but certainly not at all congested. What makes it very interesting and comfortable is the 60:40 rear seat folding-division ratio.

Safety wise Indica has a projected front clearance which would absorb the sting of any front impact. The only worrying aspect is the continuous curvature of the body which highlights any small dent on the body. Also, there is a lack of clear visibility in the car from any angle and asks for some strong assumptive skills from the driver. I highly recommend that if you are going for an Indica, either learn driving on an Indica or try your hand (& set your eyes) before becoming an owner of it.

Power steering is certainly a great aspect of the car which eases the drive in our mad traffic. Never commit the mistake of comparing it with the EPF of Swift. AC also is not disappointing but again we should compare it with that of a Petrol car AC.

The worrying factor is its ground clearance of 170mm which does nothing to soothen the experience while passing through a ditch. Though the sturdy suspensions tries to absorb the strain but still pass on a lot to test our backbone’s agility. Suspension is nothing compared to Palio’s suspension. But still well designed to keep you hopeful on our roads.

I am not very impressed but certainly would say its value for money. Indica is certainly a very decent and reliable investment with in this budget.

Indica Diesel V2 -2005 Model (17000 km in 3 years)
May 28, 2006 11:04 AM 6670 Views

Further feedback after 5 years 30000 kMs: Not a bad car as I was thinking in between. I got the engine cleaned ( carbon removal approx Rs 3000/-)at Balaji Cars Thane and dumping Fortune cars who could not remove knocking & sluggishness.Using synthetic engine oil and turbo-diesel recently which has made it run smooth. To my delight smoke density -carbon emissions are progressively reducing on PUC checks- 16 in Jan 10, to 12 in July 10 to 9 in Jan 2011!( limit allowed 65).There has not been any unforeseen breakdown except one motorised window breakdown during monsoon. Recent mileage check shows av 14 kM/liter for 1440 kM out of which approx 400 on Expressway and balance in Mumbai & Thane city traffic. Power is adequate for 2-3 people to go fast but less for fully loaded car with 5 people and luggage and you cannot go fast uphill.

Hence not a bad car for the price and fuel economy.

ADDING A NEW REVIEW to share my experience as many had seen my earlier review. My duty to record my present opinion.

After using DLG model for 38 months, time to review performance after 17000 kms.which is at all not high but can give idea @ general performance particularly as compared to petrol version I had used earlier.

Purchased it from Fortune Cars Thane Belapur Road & getting serviced also from them. Compared to Petrol it does appear underpowered particularly on uphill in traffic jam.Use of premium Diesels (extrapremium etc) does help.I was hoping faster pick up after first servicing hoping that settings would be changed but did not happen. Finally I got settings changed for AC ON condition to have higher idling speed & power. It was earlier difficult to pick up speed even after a speed breaker

Provision of rpm meter has helped as it has taught me to have more than 1500 to get pick up.One can get access to dicky from inside itself which helps avoiding stoppage of car.

In Mumbai traffic on Thane Belapur Road, prize winner for pot holes, get 13 to 15 kms which does not hurt mental peace.

Suspension is not as smooth as Maruti but its robustness drives other vehicle owners a bit away from you so that you can avoid some pot holes. It became bumpy after only 17000 kM and bushes had to be replaced .

This car requires lot of maitenance as can b seen belw-

1) Battery & starter down in 13 months some 8000 kM. Fortune car unable to detect starter failure & car was again brought back to them after installing new battery.

2) Regular servicing was done as per theit stipulated periods but the charges are high.

3) When the car was brought for routine servicing after only 17000 kM with intimation of high noise etc, wheels were rebalaced, taper roller bearings changed etc at a cost of Rs 3000, not much improvement. They advised painting of engine but did not look at other problems as can be seen in next point

4) Car brought back in next week with complaint of high noise and bumpiness & they come out with sso many problems & replacement of ball joint, bush etc costing further Rs 8000!!

5) Car automatic window gets stuck up which I have avoided to get repaired with their high charges.

At the end, not a very satisfying experience may be because I was using Maruti earlier which had very few complaints in initial period upto 40,000 km.
