My Alto 800
May 05, 2013 05:54 AM 50547 Views

Very nice car. Our first car. So far so good. Very much comfort on 120 km/h. No vibration. Turning radius is short and good. I have to try 140 -150 after the first service. Getting 22 km/l mileage on average speed of 80-100.City getting 15 km/l.Overall suitable for small family. Go for it. CAR is good :).

Don't go for GEM motors. Find some other showrooms. And get the car. Even if you are going by GEM don't add any accessories. They are cheaters. They will talk nicely but finally you wont find the honesty.

Very good car for practical people

22nd March 2013 I purchased Alto 800 LXI model it cost me 3.81 on road (Bangalore) with Music system, center lock, Teflon coating, body cover, left mirror, under chases rust coating, cigarette lighter 5 mats and mud flaps. Hope I have covered all items. After 15 days of local ride decided to go for long journey to Harihar (Around 300 km from Bangalore).

Since I am not sure of fuel per bar (Fuel gauge reading) I filled full tank petrol (set trip meter B to zero) and started journey on 12th April 2013 early morning 4. I drove on an average speed of 60-80 kmph took one break of half an hour near Hiriyur for break fast and reached Harihar by 10 am.

Visited temple near my town and visited sister place at Harapanahalli on 13th April and came back to harihar. By this time 4 bar on the fuel gauges have vanished. I refill petrol to full tank, it took 16.27 liter to make full tank. I checked trip meter B it was showing 413.8 km. I calculated mileage 413.8/16.27 = 25.43 km/l that is quite good.

I am more than happy with this performance.

Out of 413.8 km first 300 km, we were two (myself and my wife) with one small bag. most of the ride was in 5th gear on NH 4. Around 30km, five people with AC on, drove on a worst road in 2nd and  3rd gear.

rest 83.8 km 3 adults and one kid no AC.

Till now I have completed around 850km total and first service is due on 22nd April 2013.

Worst experience at buying my first car. I should have done a proper research rather than going completely by brand name and false reports given by them. I am getting mileage of 10 in Bangalore city with my new alto 800 lxi, petrol.

I was ready to compromise on power end as being first car and poor traffic, I looked for a mileage car. Definitely, it was a wrong choice. Even for my second car, I need to think before opting for Maruti, due to their fallacious promises and bluffing innocent customers.

If mileage doesn't improve even after my second service, I will be going for filing a case in consumer court/forum..

Good car. Plus point is that its quite basic and not too costly. A good deal if you only want to go from point a to point b and the distance is not too much .Good fuel economy ensures less burden on your pocket.

If only, Maruti can do something about the hard gear shifting on both K10 & alto 800.

I think this would be a good deal.

The King is Back and How

As they say you cannot keep the Superstar away for long. Sooner than later he is bound to come back at you with even greater force. For the friendly readers of my blog, mark my words.

This Car is going to be a mass hit for the reigning King Maruthi in India. I had TDed multiple cars for my wifey who was graduating from scooter to her first car.

What I was looking for

  1. No frills entry/value priced car for wifey.(2nd car for family)

  2. Primarily city driving. For Highways I have my Sedan.

  3. Hassle free driving and maintenance

Following were the Cars that were TDed

  1. Hyundai Eon.

  2. Maruthi Alto K10

  3. Chevy Spark New

  4. Nissan Micra

  5. Tata Nano

The Maruthi Alto K10 and the old Alto were ruled out straightaway the moment I sat inside the car. The low clearance and cramped space made it impossible for me to drive the car or sit as a passenger without serious risk to my hefty 95kg 6ft+ body. The Eon was actually the cutest of the lot inside out with excellent interior and a boot to rival some sedans.

However once I started the throttle the vague drumstick like gear shift and the diesel motor like noise were the only things that stared back at me. The Chevy Spark was good refined and spacious except for the hefty price difference with Alto. The Nanos image as a poors mans car to go along with the safety incidents and the fact that the in your back motor makes your bottoms burning from the heat within no time. The Nissan Micra base version came at 4.5Laks post fabulous discounts. A proper B+ segment  that was super refined and cute if not uber responsive like the Swift. However the maintenance/spare parts related feedback for the Nissan Micra were a major downer. I was about to book the Spark in spite of the price but for the sore thumb being the Dealer network. To explain it simpler there were these 2 maruthi showrooms on the way to my wifeys office(OMR Chennai) within few kms to the left or right. This car being well for the better half, I know it will fall on the head of yours truly of driving 25-30kms to the City based service center for every little thing that needs to be checked out in the car. So here I was sandwiched with the known devil Spark and its assorted maintenance drive pains or else testing out the unknown Angel in the NEW Maruthi Alto 800. With all the skeptical notions of tiny matchbox sized Avatars of the older Altos/800’s I decided to visit the Maruthi Showroom for a TD of the NEW Alto. And what a ride it turned out to be in the end!!!

I was floored by the ease with which myself a hefty 6ft 1in tall person can fit in comfortably as compared to the older Alto was Amazing. Full marks to the interior space management team.

The older Alto was a strict NO NO for tall hefty people and the revised modifications in the new Alto makes it a proper people carrier.

The refinement of the engine, the powerful AC and the gearshifts makes it a dream to drive in our traffic. I did not have to downshift even in Fourth gear at 30kmph traffic conditions. The AC was so powerful that I could comfortably switch it off within minutes(with 1-2 adults) or when I needed to do a zip drive.

The Spark was good but the new Alto matches the Spark in space and gives a fantastic ride to boot all at a 30-40K discount to the New Spark.  Given all these and the price to value quotient I do not see any other car from the Competition that can give the King any scare in the near future.

The new Alto 800 does have its negatives in terms of

  1. Reduced thigh support and wafer thin seats that makes long drives a pain.

  2. No Side Mirror at the left even on the top end variant ? Come on Maruthi this is Year 2013 and not the 1990’s.

  3. Power is not adequate if the car is fully loaded with 4-5 adults. You need to switch off AC and/or try not to be adventurous with your drive.  I am sure Maruthi would plonk the K10 into the new Alto in future. The sooner the better.  The 1.2L  K series engine of the Ritz would make this the hottest hatch in the country ?

  4. On reverse driving the car tends to get switched off at the slightest pretext. Hence driving on the reverse in an incline or in typical apartment parking spaces would be a tricky thing and one needs to practice/reverse carefully to avoid incidents.

But considering the fact that I bought the new 800 as a second car primarily for in-metro rides, there is more value in this purchase than I had hoped for...Way to go Maruthi the king!!!

Post Purchase Note : The mileage is another huge plus and I am getting close to 18 in actual driving conditions with plenty of city ride traffic. So that’s another huge plus for the King!!!

Highly unreliable car :(

The Alto is highly overrated. It's just a replica of the Maruti 800. Seating is highly uncomfortable, smoothness is hampered at high speeds & comfort is sacrificed.

JUNAGADH India
Best city car
Nov 18, 2012 12:42 PM 50972 Views

I was fed up with my 2 year old tata nano and looking for city car. Options were I10, eon, k10, wagon R.

I10 : rejected due to handling on rough road, mileage, high maintenance

eon: engine refinement, ride quality

k10: same old look ....else its good car

wagnonR: square dashboard, maruti may phase out in next 2 year ?

alto 800: why pay more if u get same refinement at low cost...so choose over wagon R.

My main criteria was small car which is low on maintenance. Instead of choosing Wagon R I choose alto 800 due to two reasons. 1. new look 2. Why should I pay more If my requirements are satisfied with less cost and I can get better mileage too.I added good quality seat covers, central lock., audio system.

Second was color. White looks very basic so I decided to go for silver. It gives feel like more premium. I added side moldings to enhance its look.

Engine: Refinement is much better then old alto or eon. I can say its upto i10 mark with less power (who cares for power for city use). I tried it also on highway too. power /torque is even sufficient if you don't want to cross 90KMPH speed. I got 20+ milage with 90% A.C. (note down I have not completed 1000 km yet and 1st service is pending).

Ride & Handling: They have improved on suspension too. On rough road ride is comfortable. Even with R12/145 tyres its handling is quite good. Up sizing Tyre may improve handling further. But still it is better then I10.

Space: only disappointment is rear leg room. Its ok for city travel but for long journey it is on lower side. even back seat is too short. But its ok for me as we are traveling 2 persons most of time. and it is used for city / short journey. Interior :  not as good as i10 but better then old alto.Plastic quality is better and finishing is also good.

finally look is a subjective matter. But I recommend Silver color with side molding.

Car is mechanically much better then old alto and even some small hatch back. But still legs behind in looks and instruments. One should decides whether they want mechanically better car or looks and interior.

Good car, but k 10 is more worth

I am in search of a new car for my own use (not a family car). So space is not at all a problem.I also dont  like to put so much money and wish to keep it for a long period say 7+ years. The use is mainly in city and hence a small car is preferred. My considerations were Tata Nano, maruti 800, alto and hyundai Eon. Nano is a nice car, which revs to its peak without lag but feeble vibrations at rear even from idle, . Also very cheap to own and maintain, but no power steering which is a must for me. Also has no glove box and has a cheap car fame. I tested eon, which is very compact, easy to park and a cheap tall boy. But it lacks in refinement and the thing I really felt bad is the gear lever vibrations, severe to throttle inputs.

I am impressed with alto and k10, desided to go for alto as it is more compact, hence easy to use in city and 50k  cheaper even though k 10 is very much refined and powerful. But interesting thing is that there is no lxi variant at time of booking due to new model launch, hence decided  to go for it.  I have booked new alto before its launch for a white LXI variant. But when the car came, all expectations were changed. The car looks too basic and far away from old model in exterior looks even I am impressed with interiors, gear shift, power steering and refinement compared to old model alto. I change my decision and walk away form it to K 10 VXi. The reason is that it is surprisingly cheaper and far more powerful and refined.

Alto 800 has no discounds and it costs 3.44 lacks on road cochin. As I have to fit left side mirror and accessory socket, it cost me additional 3k. So totally 3.47L. But in case of alto K10, VXi, I got all the above and central lock, fog lamps and a tachometer, 13 inch 155 wide tyres instead of 145 12 inch  in addition + lot more power and refinement. Above all, at a price of 3.53L after discount.

Alto 800 is a good car, with good interiors, compact and easier to park and with a finer tuned suspension and better gearshift with shorter throw than k10.

Poor Service provided by Maruti Udyog Ltd
Jul 03, 2008 01:19 AM 6397 Views

I own a Maruti 800AC bought in Sep 2005 through Competent Automobile, Delhi, ever since I bought my vehicle I had been through extensive trouble, the complete experience had been extremely poor with Competent Automobile, Gazipur, Delhi. But the current experience with Competent Automobile, Gurgaon was a nightmare experience and made me feel regretted about opting for a brand called “MARUTI”.

Now without wasting much of your time I shall share my experience with you.

I along with my family was going to Jhunjhunu (Rajasthan) on 12th April 08, we started from home at around 5:45pm and after crossing Manasar we meet with a massive accident at 8:30am, though none of us were hurt, but the vehicle was in bad shape and it had to been taken to nearest Maruti service station. After clearing all formalities like police complaint etc, I reached at competent Automobile at 4:30pm, the vehicle was received by Mr Ashish in Body Shop, I was given a time frame of 10days for repairing the vehicle i.e. 22nd April was the delivery day.

Now to see the progress of work I reach Competent Automobile on 17th April at 1:30pm without informing them, I was surprise to see that the vehicle was not attended by Competent was keep in poor share, i.e. full of dust etc. I got furious seeing this and reported the matter to Mr. Pankaj Narula, GM Maruti Udyog as soon as I got back to my office at 2.30pm.

I didn’t receive any reply from Maruti from next 4 to 5 days, I was really surprise to see such a poor service from them,  so I decided to give him a call, but he was not available to talk, later I spoke to Mr. KK Gaur, who was heading Maruti Service, north.

After several calls and email I finally got my vehicle on 25th April 08, but there was no one to explain the job carried out on the vehicle, neither the company provided me copies of bills.

The list of problems were never ending and they have not been repaired till date, I would try to shorten my review and put down list of problems.

I contacted again Maruti & National Insurance as well this time to report the matter with details, but none of them look into my complaint, I am still emailing them, thinking that they would look into it.

I feel like being cheated by Competent Automobile, Maruti Udyog Limited and National Insurance Company. Now I am planning to approach the consumer cost of India to file a legal case against the companies.

I would request you all not to buy any products from above companies, customers don’t have any importance to them.

Thanks for reading my review.

How wishes became cars
Dec 28, 2005 11:12 AM 5300 Views

There was an india that I was born in.It took pride in its 'hindu' rate of growth of 3%.Few people were rich then and it was difficult to buy a car. Those that bought a car kept it for life. Then the government took things into its own hands. Thus was born Maruti Udyog Limited that promised to put a car in the hands of all common men.I know for a fact that the first Maruti 800 was delivered to Dr Laxman Batra of Maryland Apartments,Worli,Mumbai. This, because he was our family doctor.Nevertheless, the competitor was still in lead. Then, magically times changed.People grew affluent, car finance began to boom. There were now many models to choose from.People bought cars now not because it was a status symbol but to many in the suburbs and satellite towns of metros it became an absolute necessity.MUL offered many cars in many categories. The models were all modern, all easier to drive than the competitor. However their general strength is still in doubt.Cut to the present age.We are in a boom,India is growing at 8% or more.Even more people want to purchase automobiles and their first choice is MUL.The ostensible reason is that MUL makes cars for the people it serves. It keeps their interests and requirements in mind. All this is backed by a great service network nationwide. It is however still an indian carmaker and that has its upsides and downsides.
