Mahindra Scorpio S10 AT 2WD Reviews

My Scorpio (updated on 21-dec-2004)
Oct 10, 2004 12:55 PM 14885 Views

We were looking out for a bigger vehicle after using the Ford Ikon for a few years. We ended up buying the Scorpio 2.6 SXi which was very impressive and appealing.

We have now run 4500 kms in our Scorpio in three months.

Positive features :

  1. Exterior :

The Apple Red with Soft Beige claddings has outstanding looks. The rear of the vehicle still does not match up to the standard set by the front, but adding a spoiler had improved the looks significantly.

Dual color combination is the best. If you are constrained by budget, you have the option to buy a vehicle with claddings same as base color or a vehicle with unpainted claddings or a vehicle with no claddings.

Best in class exterior looks.

  1. Interior :

Matching the exterior, our vehicle has soft beige interior. It has a two tone instrument panel with wood finish giving a very pleasing and elegant look. Air conditioning is comfortable and acts fast. The Kenwood audio system that comes as standard fitment on SXi has very good sound quality.

Overall good but gap between parts have to be improved.

  1. Engine performance :

The 2.6 L turbo charged diesel engine is very responsive. I did not expect this level of pick up and performance from a diesel engine. It feels like a petrol driven vehicle and always seems to have power when in need. The only minor glitch is to wait one minute for the turbo to get to action at the start.

Impressive performance.

  1. Handling :

The vehicle handles the hills beautifully,. I was worried about ease of parking initially. For the size of vehicle, it is easy to drive and park. The power steering is very smooth. The vehicle has very good maneuverability.

  1. Good Minor details :

  2. The Sxi variant has 8 prerecorded voice alarms like door ajar, hand brake ON, wear your seat belt.

  3. Theater style lights switch off, with choice to rotate.

  4. Pleasant looking Instrument cluster

Features that are Not great but also not bad :

  1. Fuel Efficiency :

When checked over many tank fills, found that the vehicle gives about 10 kms / litre for average city driving. On medium distance trips (say Pune - Mumbai - Pune) we get slightly more than 11 kms / litre.

  1. Ride quality :

First and foremost, this is an SUV and not a car.

If you are going to compare the ride and handling to that of a car, you will not be satisfied. An SUV will certainly give you a bumpier ride than a car. My wife compares Scorpio to an Ikon and thinks the Ikon is much better and she is right.

The vehicle’s suspension was acting too much for my comfort in the first few days. But it settled down to a better level.

I feel that considering the SUV options, this vehicle does not have a bad ride and handling. At the same time the smoothness of gear shift is nothing to write about (I especially have problems in engaging second gear)

  1. Boot space :

At the top end, only 7 seat option was available, though 8 seat is available in lower models. In 7 seat version, you have the facility to fold the middle row of seats fully and also topple themto create an enormous amount of space (my daughter is very happy at the back now).

The only thing I would have liked further was to have a split folding middle row of seats.

Features that need Improvement :

  1. Braking :

It is just OK (not good enough for Scorpio). When you push the brake pedal, the result (braking) is not proportional. For the first half of pedal movement nothing much happens, but then things happen exponentially (which is not good). I also do hear people having concerns with the braking stability at speeds above 100 kms. To be tested

  1. Build Quality :

Within the first 100 kms, we found that hot air was coming from the A/C vent at the back with full air-conditioning. Found out from the dealer that the A/C ducts on the vehicle were not connected properly at all in first place.

That gets corrected and I go again for another ride to find out that at a certain position (between 9’o clock and 10' o clock position) cool air comes in front vents and warm air in the back vents. Got back to the dealer again, only to find out that this is a design issue in Scorpio

  1. Understanding of customer expectation (by dealers) :

It is evident from the overall quality of the vehicle that M&M is doing a lot for customer satisfaction. But the result is not reaching the end customer, because of some small things (that create a major impact).

My vehicle had a clear scratch mark on the front right door (about 5 – 8 mm length) when purchased. The dealership did not have an answer. I don't think M&M would have shipped a vehicle this way. But the dealers do not perceive this as an issue.

An optional rear view mirror that looks really cuteis available (to enlarge and show vehicles that are right next to rear door). This fell down twice in the first two weeks. Dealer says that it is not a good accessory to buy. Then why is it in the list ?

There are chrome grillsthat are optional on top of the tail lamps. These grills are assembled using double sided sticker and super glueonto the vehicle. I do not think any vehicle manufacturer would accept this as a process.

My steering wheel had a clear dirt mark when I purchased the vehicle, which was left unclean.

I do not think the above issues are a one dealer issue (as my dealer has been very prompt in his responses and has a good attitude).

I think the overall standard of the dealer network should be improved to meet the customer requirements of this specific vehicle which is very different from other M&M products.

  1. Squeak and Rattle :

Front left seat belt give a very unpleasant rattlewhen it is not in use. The seats or the seat cover seem to get between the latch and its normal position (gap is too less)

The rear door was rattling. On some close look found that the number plate at the back is rattling. Reason ? It was has been stuck using double side tape and so improper fitment.

There is another flip flop noise coming from the air-conditioner now and then.

Unknown ?

  • Cost of maintenanceover a period of time

  • Long term durability and qualityof the vehicle over a period of time.

Verdict ?

We have to appreciate the M&M team for coming with a wonderful indigenously developed SUV. It really proves that India can design and manufacture vehicles to world class standards. (The dealerships have a little further to go).

Even after Tavera entry, I still think the Scorpio is better overall. I am certain that the maintenance of the Scorpio (designed and developed in India) is going to be more economical than an imported vehicle design.

Overall I would recommend to Go and get it

The Good and the Bad of the Scorpio
Sep 16, 2004 11:24 AM 13421 Views

Well, I have been using a Scorpio for the last one and a half years and shall attempt to give an impartial view on it.

First the looks - its really good looking, no doubt about it. I mean, practically all SUVs look good to men. But most women (including yours truly) dont generally appreciate the huge, box-like look that most SUVs sport. But the Scorpio is an exception. It has a smart look that can make heads turn.

Second, the space - its certainly spacious. We usually travel in a group of 6 adults and 4 highly boisterous kids. Believe me, any car that can house 4 kids peacefully has to be amazing on space.

Third, maintenance - this was one thing we were afraid of since the general rumour is that diesel vehicles need lots of expensive maintenance. Well, its been 1 and 1/2 years and we haven’t really spent anything except the periodical servicing and oil changes. Apart from that, there was a knob which had come off from the dashboard but that was replaced free of charge by the company.

Fourth, noise - yes, this does make quite a bit of noise like a typical diesel vehicle. I believe this has been removed in the more recent variants but I haven’t checked it out for myself. We had an Esteem earlier, and that was noiseless.

Fifth, smoothness - I must say this is much more bumpy than other low cars.

Sixth, ease of driving - We have a model which has power steering and anyone who has driven it, says that its one of the easiest cars to drive. Not to forget the bully power that one wields in a place like Kolkata !

Seventh (the last and not the least), Sturdiness - well, a few months back, we were standing at a traffic signal when an Esteem came at full speed and banged our Scorpio from the back. We watched with dread as their windshield came crashing down (the people were thankfully unhurt) and the front of the Esteem went right in. Believe me, there was just about a scratch on our Scorpio.

In all, a good buy. I am definitely a satisfied customer. Beware of one thing though, you might be the one forever footing the diesel bill wherever you go since no one else will bother to take out their cars!

WoW! Customer Response
Sep 02, 2004 09:03 PM 12807 Views

I had written the review below on ''Pathetic Consumer Response''- late evening on Sept 02, 2004. Early morning Sept 03, 2004 - I have been communicated with directly by the brand manager of Mahindra Scorpio- who has shown ''true-blue'' professionalism in both replying to me & his promptness in explaining the reason for not reverting in time (technical issue!).

I am GLAD that the faith I have in the car, extends to other areas of the Scorpio team. Kudos Sujan... you have single-handedly ''kept the faith'' for the brand!!

FULL STARS

And great work mouthshut team for providing this forum - where consumers can actually interface with the producers.

Cheers

PS: Chk out an interactive forum for the Mahindra Scorpio ''current'' and ''prospective'' owners... https://groups.yahoo.com/group/Mahindra_Scorpio/

-----------------------------------------------

This is NOT a review of the Mahindra Scorpio vehicle - I haven't owned it yet ..!!

IT IS ABOUT THE SCORPIO WEBSITE...and the CUSTOMER RESPONSE online.

For a company that is trying to sell a fancy-jeep (and I must say here that I like it's design & image!) - and had filled the airwaves with PR on their customer focussed product for India... they dont know how to treat an online ''prospective'' customer ..... god only help us once we have bought the product!!

While the website is full of fancy over-glossed images - it fails to perform its most fundamental task - serve as interface between the company and the customer.

I had certain queries about the vehicle - and sent a mail over 2 week ago!

AND I STILL HAVENT GOT SOMETHING AS BASIC AS AN AUTOMATED ACKNOWLEDGEMENT!!

THIS IT SEEMS IS THE ''TRUE CUSTOMER FOCUS''.... no PR gloss

Hey ... M&M ...why set up a website ...if you still havent mastered what its for! Maybe while you were developing the vehicle, and the ads...along the way you forgot the consumer!

ZERO STARS FOR THIS PATHETIC RESPONSE!!

For all the ardent Scorpio fans - this post might seem like an excess ... however, a company's rating is not confined to its product... and for one that is getting such high product ratings it should be of utmost shame that they are unable to get something as basic a online customer response correct...which turns off an ardent fan into a spiteful reviewer!

Masculine SUV for Indians by Indians

If your requirement is to go to market and buy vegetables, go to restaurants and have masala dosa with girl friend then definately this vehicle is NOT for you. you should consider buying alto or santro.

Scorpio is for those dare devils who would not like to stop before 500 km driving at a stretch irrespective of road conditions.

A superb comfortable car, with upright seats, hell lot of leg room for middle seat and a 5'5'' man can sleep at the rear.

Driving scorpio below 100 kmph feels as if you are not doing justice to the vehicle. I drove at 135 kmph at a stretch for at least 5 minutes travelling between bangalore and salem. No vibrations, no fear and no jerks. Just close all windows, turn on AC and feel the comfort as if you are in boein 747.

Fantastic ground clearance makes all types of roads a cake walk. All speed breakers, bumpers and all pot holes disappear. While waiting at the signal you can see far ahead than anybody can. While seating at the driving seat your view is blocked only by a bus or truck. Your eyes are well above all the vehicles on the road.

Driving on highway at 110 kmph in heavy rain gives the same comfort. No need to worry about sliping.

Overall great vehicle to drive, go out for long drives with friends on weekends and feel proud while driving on the road.

1st Indian car::Indica,1st indian SUV::Scorpio
Aug 14, 2004 12:44 PM 9390 Views

I can't believe that this car (sorry,SUV) is made in India!Atlast,a world class SUV at just the right price.it is not like the safari or qualis, with very less power.

the engine is a 2600 cc turbo-charged diesel engine which pumps out about 110 bhp. That is a whole 20 bhp more than the safari and a few horses less than the pajero.a petrol version is also available which is a 2000 cc one which pumps 116 bhp. It is surprisingly expensive.

The Scorpio is really gorgeous. The back looks a tad too flat. It would look better if the spare wheel was placed there like traditional SUV's. The front is awesome, especially the grille and the integrated fog lamps. The grill is available in three types-body color, chrome and black plastic. As for me I would prefer the body colored one. It is available in many colors like maroon, gold, black, dark green, dark blue, etc. I would suggest the black color jeep. It looks elegant and rugged.

You can literally walk into the cabin. The steering wheel feels quite light (power steering). The seating is okay. The dash looks good and has many controls. You get a white speedo and tacho dial in the petrol version.the space of course is abundant in plenty. There are 3 rows of forward facing seats(sorry, I could not get more info).

It reaches 60km in a respectible 7 seconds and 100 km in close to 14 seconds. It manages a top speed of around 160 kmph.it can overtake cars with ease, due to its power. The engine does not make much noise. Handling is good considering it is an SUV. But the fuel efficiency wasn't too good. But it is okay considering it is an SUV. You can get 7-9 km to a litre of diesel in the city and 10-12km on the highway. I would prefer the diesel as the petrol gives less efficiency.

Overall, an excellent vehicle... ??? let down by its after sales service???. It definitely beats the qualis and safari and at times even some of its japanese counterparts. At Rs.6,50,000 it is a good deal. Anyone who wants a capable SUV with a respectable fuel economy sporting a light price tag, the scorpio will definitely fit the bill. Just like Tata produced the first indegenous car of India, Mahindra has produced the first true SUV of India. We should be proud of both of them.

Team M&M - Take it to the world!!
Aug 11, 2004 11:14 PM 11415 Views

I test drove the Scorpio today. AWESOME is the right word. I have

driven the legendry Toyota LandCruiser for a good time and now own a

Bolero. This beats both ends of the spectrum. Its not as big as the

LC/Hummer/Pajeros of the world, its not underpowered like the Safari

(I don't consider Qualis/Tavera as its competition), isn't only a

sports vehicle like the Wrangler and isn't as expensive as the

Terracan/CRV/XTrail/Forrester. At the cost of being laughed at, I

think the Scorpio has created a new segment in the SUV market given

its low-price and great performance.

The torque and power are damn good. The accleration is linear. The

braking feels right and the steering it is a walk in the park. The AC

chills and the seating feels just right. From first, I shifted into

second gear and gave the accelerator a hard push and the vehicle

sprinted ahead like a car. It took the potholes in its stride like a

good SUV (better than the Bolero, I drove my Bolero over the same

potholes a little later). The gear shift isn't as slick but I guess

the Bolero's BA10 gearbox legacy continues. Too bad the crowded

traffic and potholed roads of Bombay didn't give me much chance to put

the vehicle thru some speed tests. One thing where M&M could do more

work is engine noise. At idle, the engine clatter can turn-off the

rich snobs (not UV enthusiasts like me). CRDi anyone? Also, I would've

loved to take a 4x4 Scorpio to the Great Escape.

The advertising plain sucks. The cool dude carrying his car in a plane

doesn't do justice to the Scorpio. It looks classy but it isn't. This

isn't what the Scorpio needs. M&M needs to come up with a campaign

that brings people by the hordes to the showroom for the test drive.

The vehicle will do the rest. My uncle who drove a Pajero for ten

years in the gulf bought the Scorpio after the test drive. And he's a

SUV enthusiast too. What more can I say?

The product is an international winner, I think. I just don't see why

would anyone buy a sedan? The Scorpio offers the best of both the

worlds - car and SUV. The critics have been proven wrong - the sales

numbers will tell you that. What M&M

needs is brilliant marketing to take it overseas. I feel the product

has the qualities to make it abroad. Hmmm ... Ohh!! Yes, M&M will need

Toyota's quality levels to do that but.

The vehicle is about a nation's engineering efforts. It goes to show

that we, as yet, don't do much R&D. And quality levels are still not

that good as Scorpio owners here and there will tell you of niggling

problems. As for R&D, the engine was done in Austria, the 4WD system

by BorgWarner, the gearbox is BA10 from Peugot, the body from Japan,

and the suspension in Korea (Samlip). Did I leave out something? You

can outsource R&D to get a headstart but outsourcing R&D won't keep

you ahead of competition for very long. Lots of people have claimed

outsourcing R&D as a sort of mini-coup in the area of automobile

manufacturing by M&M but I beg to differ.

I don't think places like Kuwait and Spain are the right places to

introduce this vehicle. Why would a Kuwaiti buy a low-priced SUV from

an unknown brand when he can easily afford a Range-Rover, Pajero, LC

or a Hummer? Same goes for Spain. The right place would've been places

like Africa/Oman/Latin-America where they need cheap 4x4s.

I am giving it four stars and deducting one star for quality levels below the likes of Toyota bcoz I believe quality doesn't require so much of investment as much as committment.

Just my two paise worth ;)

Cheers,

Siddhartha

Statutory Warning - I own a Bolero ;)

I?ve been waiting patiently for quite a long time for those designers at mahindra to finally open the covers over this baby. It had a lot of hype around this MUV .All in all , what I was expecting from all this hype was a damper of a product..because generally hype is created to hide the flaws in your product.

But...hey! mister..this guy?s a head turner. Standing at 2609 cc and guzzling fuel, 2 tonnes of pure rippling muscle, presenting before you ...THE SCORPIOOOO.....First look at it and he looked like a manageable beast to me. I cajoled a friend for days on to take me for a drive in it and there she was..all mine. On the western express highway, I rode this beast at 130 kmph and did not feel a tremble down my spine. I was astonished. Yeah , the looks were good, but the techie friends of mine at mahindra had actually managed to genetically modify and create a silent well behaving and graceful gazelle like BULL in the scorpio.

The insides are spacious enough to take your neighbourhood marriage party all the way to ibiza and the looks are all plastic, but then, who?s looking at great interiors and space, when the fun on this turbo charged bull happens while riding it.

The wheels are a humoungous 15 inch bridgestones and makes the scorpio look more and more like the charging bull, rather than a scorpio ( as ther name suggests)

I drove the 5.5 lakh standard version, but my friend tells me there is another dx version for 6.1 lacs. I suggest you buy the base model version and jazz it up with a few goodies of your own rather than directly going for the dx version.

I?m yet to drive this baby on a real dirt track, so I can?t really comment on this bull?s liking towards dirty, muddy roads, though first impressions are that this beast can conquer any terrain.

All I want to end with is, if you guys want a tamed bull, that runs like a gazelle, wags his tail like your dog and climbs hills like a goat, the scorpio is what you want.

Great performance

I finally bought the SLX from India garage bangalore, after reading all the reviews here. I chose the beige/silver and I feel thats the best out of the two. The only sad part is that this car comes with below average stereo, which had to be replaced and does not come with alloys, so had to replace wheels as well.

I would have prefered to have it come factory fitted with these along with leather seats. Its been couple of days now since I have had it and I absolutely love it. Its fairly quiet inside the cabin. They could have utilised the space inside better, but overall it feels nice driving the scorpio slx.

I live out of india and drive honda accord, and mercedes c280 and this is the 1st time I am driving an indian built car... I must say they have done a decent job on this car.

Bangalore India
I Love It !!
Jul 22, 2004 04:27 PM 9558 Views

Purchased the vehicle from Vijai Auto Sales Bangalore, after a long long wait (2.5 months), but when I had it finally, I felt it was worth waiting. I simply love it's style, power, comforts and what else.....

I had been driving Maruti 800 so far and when I started driving this tiger, it made all that difference. It just zooms once you hit accelrator with its enormous power. You don't feel like you are driving such a huge elephant. It just sails through. However, you need to press the gear bit hard, it is not as smooth as in some other cars..

Interiors are good. Power steering is great. Sometimes, when you are above70KMH, it makes a strange noise like hummmmm.... but sales people said it is quite natural due to turbo charger. Waiting for a minute in idle before starting and stopping is a pain, but one had to live with it as it is turbo engine.

One has to buy all the other accessories required, including mats, seat covers etc. and nothing comes as complementary except a chocalate box !! Also they would have fitted in alloy wheels by default.

Overall, a great driving experience. When I drove this car to my office, everybody's eyes were set on my new scorpio, though there were so many other corollas and hondas. This makes me proud.. Good work Mahindra, keep it UP !!

No second thoughts

Updated : 11th Jan 2010Composite suspension. Ooty in 3 hours flat.

New set of tyres - Nitro fill - floats

Green filters from Peter - Vroooom

Trivandrum - Kozhikode in under 7 hours.

Hindsight - would still buy a Scorpio.

Standard edition - 8 seater. An 8 seater so where does one fit all the luggage ? A carriage should have been part of standard equipment.Take your car from the showroom to the nearest wheel alignment centre if you want to save your new tyres !! Did 3000 kms in the first month.

A monster and a beast !! You get a lot of respect on the road as other vehicles give you way. Having driven a Zen for 2 years, this car is really something. There is hardly a problem in getting used to the controls. Did 720 kms in a day and woke up the next morning without any stiff joints.

A bit bumpy on rough roads but a 50 kg sack of sand at the rear did the trick when travelling with less then 4 people. Tyre pressure maintained at 29. Just started using it to go up the hills and the pickup is brilliant but the rear sways like a fat lady while taking elevated bends. Suspension certainly requires improvement. The vehicle becomes unstable with stretched beyond 120 kmph

Mileage of 12.9 - 13.1 (with reliance fuel) with my steady driving at 80-90 km on long trips. Drops to 9-10 on short / mountain rides. The aircon is a chiller. Kalhatty (Masanagudi - Ooty) was a breeze and the vehicle showed no sighs of strain, except for the treacherous and deceptive last part, where I had to shift to first gear. Would love to do that stretch again !!

The car gets a bit dangerous while driving in the rains as patches of water on the roads can splash on to the windscreen to blind you (bumper guard available now). I once drove 400 kms with 9 people and the handling was quite smooth. Gears should have been smoother. Perhaps it would improve after the routine service (It did) Music system requires oval speakers, so the one that comes along with standard stuff does not fit in. Ended up fitting box speakers at the rear.

I had evaluated Tavera and PS2 before deciding on the Scorpio. No second thoughts whatsoever. Value for money. Kids love it. Wife drives it too.The buying experience with the local dealer was quite terrible. I was shocked when they told that my payment was short by Rs. 300/- and unless paid, will not be able to take delivery of the vehicle. It was obviously an error in their proforma, which they later admitted. Time that they learn't from the Maruti dealers on how to treat customers !! Was even unwilling to fix the number plate for me (A matter of 4 screws) Got wheel cups, floor mat and leather seating for another dealer.

Recently had to stuff 12 people and drove 50 kms on a ghat section. Brilliant again !!

6th year / 71 k kms, second set of tires. NO REGRETS.

Hardly any maintenance.. Eyeing an mHawk

Takes for ever to get the vehicle's delivery
Jun 14, 2004 09:12 AM 9858 Views

I too surveyed a lot of SUVs (or MUVs) including the GM's Tavera and finally settled on Scorpio. I booked my vehicle on 22-Apr-2004 @ India Garage and at that time the saleswoman and the manager were very sweet-talking. They promised the vehicle in 3 weeks and at most within 4-5 weeks. It is running into more than 8 weeks now and every time I get a vague reply. ''There is a go-slow strike in the Mahindra plant'', ''Vehicle is expected to be delivered next week'', etc. etc.

When I booked there were supposedly 16 people ahead of me. Is M&M really not able to deliver atleast two vehicles to this particular dealer?

My initial enthusiasm and eagerness is dying. Dont whether I should be blaming the dealer or the manufacturer...

Are there other people waiting for such long periods for thi vehicle? Atleast I havent read about anything being wrong at M&M's plant in Nashik. I really cannot fathom or explain this delay in getting the vehicle.

Mumbai India
Surely, Nothing Else Will Do
May 31, 2004 02:18 PM 11438 Views

I had done a lot of Homework before deciding to go in for the Scorpio. Well, I would have loved to buy the GLX model with the Roof rails, Arm Rests & Body Colored Bumpers & claddings, but the difference between the Price of a DLX & GLX made me go in for the DLX model & I still feel that it makes better sense.

Well, am driving this baby since last 3 months and have covered 5000 kms (Before this vehicle, my average running per year was 6000 kms). I purchased this vehicle in end of february and took it for a long vacation in 1st week of march. I travelled from Mumbai to Goa, Goa to Kannur (Kerala), Kannur to Guruvayur, Guruvayur to Munnar, Munnar to Kodaikanal, Kodaikanal to Ooty, Ooty to Mysore, Mysore to Belgaum & Belgaum to Mumbai.

The total distance covered was 3700 kms & I was the only driver. The vehicle is just amazing. This is my first diesel vehicle & I started liking it more and more with each passing day. It drives almost like any petrol vehicle with the amazing engine that it has.

You can drive at 120 kms throughout the day without any problem. And the most important point being highlighted by everyone regarding the unstability at high speeds, well let me tell you there is nothing wrong with the vehicle at high speeds. But if you are hell bent on creating problems for yourself then you can do that in any vehicle. Infact while travelling from Mysore to Belgaum, I was doing 110kms & there was a guy in Indica ahead of me.

For no rhyme and reason he decided to brake & I had to apply emergency brakes. Believe me, the Scorpio just stopped without any fuss (even I was surprised). So if at all you are having second thoughts regarding handling at high speeds, I would suggest you to go to the dealer and take a test drive on the highway. The A/c is also amazing and even in extreme hot climates your vehicle will be as cool as ever.

Wish some other manufacturers will take a clue from Mahindra and start offering some serious value for money SUVs.

Yes, Scorpio for a gemini!
Apr 27, 2004 10:52 PM 12055 Views

Hi There,

Its been now 3 months with my babe and this is what is my experience.

I too waited for about 1.5 months for the Scorpio (at Vijai Auto Sales), the promised period being 3-4 weeks at the max! I really got frustrated at times & wanted to go in for the Safari (even after knowing that its a mere 87 BHP sobber) since the delivery time for Safari was 5-7 days, here in Bangalore.

If I had taken that decision then, believe me, I would have repented in leisure today, believe me!

The amazing power of the Scorpio would just have been a dream for me (Actually, I wouldn't have dreamt it would be so fast either ;^). Thanks to many of my friends who suggested for me to wait! So, to all my friends who feel they are waiting for toooo long after booking a Scorpio, believe me, its just WORTH THE WAIT!

What I wanted to mention here was my recent experience with my Scorpio. It was the 5th morning, 4:00 AM & we were already ripping off on the NH7 (Bangalore - Tumkur) with my two girls (my Scorpio & my Arian), the final destination being GOA! Travelling for 14 hours at a stretch was a real pleasure for me & my wife, who was my only pillion~

We reached Goa after 1800 Rs worth of fuel (25.19 Rs per liter & I got a decent 12 kmpl). This entire route was screwed up badly due to the formation of the Golden Quadrilateral, but then, who cares!

One thing you need to take really seriously from me, you cant drive any other vehicle once you start driving a Scorpio (my other car is an Esteem, which I hardly use now-a-days) & believe me, if you think that 8.5 kmpl in the city & 12 kmpl outside is bad, dont go in for a Scorpio! (It goes without saying, you are losing one of the most happening pleasures of life). Anyways, no one would suggest you to go in for a Yamaha, if you care too much for the mileage!

We did enjoy a lot in Goa at the Holiday Inn Resort (MOBOR beach) for 3 full days & were hesitant to return after. We had to, so why not go to Bangalore via Jog? We took the route Goa, Karwar, Ankola, Honnavar, Jog, Sagar, Shimoga, Arsikere, Tumkur & Bangalore, and we covered all this is 8 hrs flat! (I dint drink on the day I drove back, so you can believe me on the timing!)

The drive is tremendous & the stability is unsurpassed. All the rumours about the stability, is plain bull shit. I am really happy to have this vehicle & would recommend it to any one who has the dough for it.

Coming to the stereo, the problem is with the speakers & NOT the system. The system is quite good. What you need to do is to have a pair of boxes at the back & embed the speakers in them. Believe me, the effect is really amazing.

Did I forget to mention about my Tavera test drive?? Yes, I went in for the test drive, and the first thing that almost pounced in my mind was the fact that its not an SUV at all! (Well then, why else would GM call it a ''Family Car'')? Well the main things about it are:

First things first, its more comparable to a toyota qualis, but the only thing is that here we have a more rounded version. The front reminds one a lil bit of the Tata Safari.. and the rear is van like.

Comparison to the Scorpio is not outright possible, coz its a bigger, taller, more heavier vehicle with more power. THe Scorpio is a true blue SUV, with high seating and broad shoulders, and a stance that gives it road presence, with 15 inch tyres, side cladding, the works I mean.

The Tavera has a seating which is more like the qualis, tall, narrow, but spacious.

The dash, seating position, is the same as the qualis, nothin one would enjoy driving. The instrument cluster was very basic, lacking a tachometer even. (6.7 Lakhs + on road in Bangalore).

Something that I dint like was the hand operated parking brake lever in the dash, and the long shift gearstick. And the AC vents like taken from the Maruti 800.

The panel gap finish was just like the ambassador... wide enough to stick ur finger, or whatever else, in it... especially around the rear.

One thing nice was the paint job, which truly gives it a better look. But still not worth for a car thats upwards of 6.5 lakhs.

The Scorpio does have its very small shortcomings, but that can surely be overlooked when compared to the Tavera. No reason for it to have a 2 month waiting, right?

Besides if u take into account the version that has the side claddings, the twin AC, the alloys and fog lamps, you are lookin upwards of 7.7 lakhs. Get a scorpio instead.

Alright, then who buys it? People scared of the Scorpio & how manageable it is, but still have a family larger that 5. (Mileage is similar to the Qualis. 10.5 the scorpio goes about 8-9. so not for the average minded, But still diesel is cheaper) taxi operators who want a better offering than the Sumo or the Qualis. Or someone lookin at a different vehicle altogether. Dont forget to take in mind resale and the price you will get.

Hope my views were of some help. I was really dissapointed with the vehicle overall. Should've been cheaper, people couldve considered buyin it.

Lets see if there is any other vehicle that might be a competition for the Scorpio.

Not at all thrilling !!!
Apr 27, 2004 05:54 PM 10565 Views

Hey, I just took a Scorpio DX the other day for a test drive and drove it just about 5 kilometers and stopped because it was not thrilling at all!

You know what, for better part of the drive, I drove it at over 100 KMPH and there was no other vehicle on the road with which I had to compete to rule the road. I could cross any vehicle and overtake it so very effortlessly that I felt as though I was crossing the walkers with my sporty bicycle.

I am used to driving my Maruti for over six long years. It promptly keeps me on alert about the speed at which I was driving once I cross 60 or so with slight to moderate wobble (increases with speed) and of course proportionately increasing noise. But what about a Scorpio? You know, I just pressed the accelerator and kept changing gears when felt comfortable and did not even know I was driving at 110 KMPH until I saw the speedometer! No vibrations, no noise, nothing... So boring, is isn’t it?

There is another thing - the seats and other such stuff. When I sat in any other car so far, I knew I sat in car. But Scorpio - well, until I got off it, I did not even know I was traveling. The comfort of the seat was such that I did not feel I was away from highly ergonomically designed office chair. What about the AC? I did not even know it was on because it did not even made the hissing noise of the blower. All the while I was wondering why the car was so cool when the city was actually so hot.

After driving my small car for so long and went for a test drive of a Scorpio, I thought it would be difficult because of the huge size, but it made no difference at all. I could drive it so coolly that I felt as if I was riding my powerful motorbike. So, when my colleague, who also accompanied me for the drive, asked me how I felt, I didn't know what to tell him.

I surely expected a lot of excitement in driving a Scorpio over driving a Maruti but ultimately the drive was SSSOOOOO SSSMMMMOOOOOOTTHHH that it made me feel no excitement at all. May be, habits die hard and I am habituated to driving a car that makes noise, vibrates and wobbles at high speeds and its hard for me to change, huh...

Just go in for the Scorpio
Apr 22, 2004 05:24 PM 9490 Views

I have had my eyes set on the Scorpio since about one year, and have finally managed to pull it off two months back. I've just driven it around 4500 kms (which includes a trip to the Corbett National park with its rough and wild terrain)and figured out lots and lots of pros and a few cons to the Scorpio. There is no need to elaborate about the cool looks, terrific power and ''getting noticed'' factor of this car, as volumes and volumes have already been written about it.

There are just a couple of teething problems with the Scorpio which need to be ironed out ASAP. One, during the first month i'd already been to the dealer 4 - 5 times to sort out minor problems like, rattling rear door, the stereo konking off, the central locking malfunctioning, a loose and noisy driver's window glass etc. If Mahindra is looking at Scorpio to be a world class product it should look into these minor probs at the time of PDI.

The dealer service regarding these problems has been far from satisfactory. It was just that I made friends with one of the supervisors at the dealer and could get my work done faster!! Now coming to the good news -- I believe for this price u cant get anything as good as this in India ( I dunno how much would the Chevy Tavera be for). My friend at work bought a Toyota Corolla around the same time as me, spent 3.5 lacs more than me, but its the Scorpio thats getting all the attention!!! The noise of engine is pretty OK but if it could be reduced it'll be great.

Lot of people advised me to go in for 265/70 mm tyres but i'm sticking to the orignal ones and they are doing great.I dunno mebbe the sway which the Scorpio has (at high speed) will be reduced by wider tyres. The best feel is at the traffic lights where yuo are above everyone else!!

Conclusion : Fantastic Automobile

Scorpio tips over easily
Apr 22, 2004 04:18 PM 11802 Views

I was driving my 5000 km old scorpio in Chennai at about 60 km on the highway. A dog ran out suddenly and I stepped on the brakes the car did a 180 degree skid and flipped on to its left side. Thankfully because of the seat belts and the rugged construction my passenger and I walked away without a scratch. We pushed the car over and drove on. The left side needed extensive tinkering work.

On examining the accident spot, I found that my right side wheels were driving on the wet surface of the road, on water spilt by a tanker while the left side was on dry traction.

I was very surprised after the incident as I always considered the Scorpio to be very stable.

Please note - - I was not going fast. and was not under the influence of liquor. Only contributing factor that I can think of was the wet road under the right side wheels.

Does any one have any comments? Know of any similar incidents?

Messy electricals - Part 2
Apr 19, 2004 04:48 PM 9175 Views

2 years & 30000Km down....I am still driving the brute. and enjoying it. (can you believe it? I am driving in Bangalore!!!)

The clutch was damaged (some pump broke down)...It was replaced - free of cost

The power windows(3 out of 4) refused to go up and down...It was also replaced - Cost : 18 rupees (no need to read it again, Only 18)

A sand tripper took the front bumper...Replaced

The door plastics have started to fade...Whats life without aging?

Kormanagla roads(yesterday I saw an archeolegist digging to find the remains of what used to be a road a long time ago) give some noise from the suspension...When even my bones creak what can you expect of a car?

apart from these minor incidents life has been pretty much good. The mileage is around 10.2KMPL, which is good. Still threatens the lesser mortals around by making my own road in peak traffic, and make your own parking space(in parallel aprking) once in a while when nobody is around...(How evil !!)

Those who want to by a new one..Go for the CRDe..Its a monster!

Enjoy the drive.

Nothing else we do than sales

I am a proud owner of a Scorpio. Also I have covered more than 10,000 KM in 6months. My driving experience with Scorpio is, it is a very good vehicle and powerful for Indian roads.

But the real story is the problems, after sales care, sounds, etc. After the 2500Kms, I started worried about the small sounds that coming from the interiors, like front bucket seat, from the door hinges etc. This is rectified in the first service.

But after the first service the Major problem stated, there is a noise start coming from the engine. Then I shown to the dealer, and he said it is because of some bearing and they changed that. But still the noise is there, and the dealer is so dump so he cannot hear that. I shown this to another proud Scorpio owner and he agreed to my point. And we compared the same with his vehicle and there is a marginal noise difference.

Hmm.. Later I came to know that my dealer is believe in “Nothing else we do than sales” .

And the third problem I am facing is with the shock absorbers, initially it was very smooth and now it is not better than a bull cart in rough roads. During the sales the salesman convinced me that they have taken some Koran technology for the shock absorbers. And the dealer couldn’t rectify even that. Because he strongly believes in his motto.

Forth problem that I am reporting is not with my Scorpio, this is with the other proud owner I was referring to , if he goes above 80Km his steering start shivering. This made him sleepless. Not just because he spend 8lacks to buy this, he has a feeling that did he made a wrong choice

So I believe if Mahindra continue with this attitude of after sales care, then nothing more to say, that is the End of Scorpio sales.

Huckleberry Rao
Feb 26, 2004 09:39 AM 12272 Views

I recently spent a couple of weeks driving a Scorpio. The Scorpio reminds me of my college friend Huckleberry Rao. While his real name is less esoteric, one can call him that because his outlook to life matches Huckleberry Finn, the loveable, happy-go-lucky Mark Twain character.

Huckleberry Rao is always great fun to be with. He knows great campsites in the misty hills beyond Karjat. He knows waterfalls where we would soak until we were blue with cold. Rao took us to hidden leafy glades at the creek behind Dombivili where we would gulp Maggi noodles cooked in a battered pan, washed down with warm Kingfisher beer. You could spend entire afternoons with Rao sitting on a dis-used railway bridge chucking stones into the river below.

Rao would scamper like a mountain goat over steep slopes while I huffed and puffed behind begging him to go slower . . . He would merely turn back and reply ‘You’ve got to run fast up slopes . . . it is easier that way.’ He would run all the way downhill and when accosted would say ‘It is downhill for chrissakes . . . it is only natural to run!’

The Scorpio engine is very similar, pulling at the leash like an eager puppy begging to be let loose. No turbo-lag, no hesitation, doesn’t feel like a diesel. And the low-pitched whistle of the turbo-charger is Rao whistling (off key as always) as he runs uphill and runs downhill! Gearshift though well spaced is a little notchy.

Though a charming fellow, Huckleberry Rao was not the most refined of characters – certainly not the best-behaved man in town. He would look the other way when girls talked to him. The first instinct of every girl I knew was to try & disassociate me from Rao! They never succeeded!! That sums up the Scorpio. Great fun to be with, charming style but not a well-mannered good boy like a Honda City. With little eccentricities that frustrate but also make the car very, very loveable!

The seating position is excellent and gives the meekest of drivers a superiority complex. All-round visibility is top-notch & I never had a problem parking or manoeuvring even in Mumbai. You know exactly where the bonnet tapers of and where the slab-sided rear of this handsome beast ends.

The robust build inspires confidence. It feels indestructible going over pockmarked rural roads and Kanchenjunga sized speedbreakers where even mighty trucks slow down to pay obseiance! Though it does this with nonchalant ease your backside is certainly not cosseted nor is the interior tomb-silent when you push the two port-side wheels on the unpaved shoulder of the highway to overtake the groaning truck in front of you. But try doing that with an Esteem or a Lancer and you’ll know what fear is!

Switchgear positioning & ergonomics are good, the instrumentation is very readable. The interior is nicely lit and the headlamps not only look good but are also powerful and well focused. Despite a high centre of gravity, the Scorpio is well balanced on turns and never feels top heavy. It takes the curves at Lonavala on the Pune Expressway with speed and aplomb.

My kids love the paint job and the chunky steering wheel elicits a grin every time. The gear stalk vibrates with the engine at idle and the brakes require a heavy foot. And the Scorpio is certainly not the right choice if you are planning to elope with your girlfriend in the dead of the night. The large-hearted engine is like a bombastic uncle who loves to announce his arrival. A dead pedal for the left foot was badly missed and I wish it had a bigger, sturdier glovebox.

But the Scorpio never ceases to entertain. The interior is the size of a standard Mumbai flat and will comfortably seat seven. If you fold the seats you can easily shift house without hiring a truck. With a Scorpio parked outside your house, you’ll find yourself looking forward to weekends with greater zeal. It improves your family life – your wife will love you even more, your kids will watch less TV and will be eager to keep you in the best of spirits.

Huckleberry Rao is now married and has kids. I still take time out with him sometimes on lazy Saturday afternoons, sitting at the Barrista on FC Road, Pune watching the long-legged PYTs walk past. That’s what serendipity feels like, that’s what happily approaching middle age with cherished memories of a thoroughly mis-spent youth feels like. And that is what it feels like to spend quality time alone with the Scorpio, a long winding road in front of you and your favourite music playing on the CD-Changer.

Middle age feels boring? Tired of your current clunker? Considering buying a 5-Lakh plus car? Do yourself a favour and check out the Scorpio. Even if you don’t wax eloquent over it like I do, at the very least you get 11 kmpl of Diesel economy and 2 more seats . . . handy to pick up your in-laws from the airport!

But a word of caution – never seat your significant other (spouse, girlfriend, mistress) in the centre of the 2nd row of seats with the rear AC vents at full blast! Why, you ask? Try it and you’ll know what I mean!

Review : M & M scorpio is a pleasant surprise from a company known for its ruggedness. Lets look at the features of the scorpio one by one

UNDER THE BONNET

-------------------------

1) engine is highly powered and very responsive although its reliability is still not very well known

2) transmission is as smooth as butter except sometimes when you change to second gear

3) steering is speed sensitive and the car is easy to move even in highly congested areas

4) a/c is powerful enough to make you catch the chills although the rear vents could have been placed better

5) suspension although the ride is bumpy for the driver sometimes its real smooth for the ppl seating in the second or third row (it also has a lot to do with our roads)

6) mileage is not very good but not much bad either 8-10 in city as well as high- ways with aircon on

EXTERIOR

----------------------

1) front of the car is absolutely sexy with a korean touch with it

2) people complain bout the ugly rear looks of the car but I say add the spoilers and it looks way better

3) the cladding on the glx version looks the best with body painted colors

4) wide bridgestone tyres look gr8 although alloys would have been better

INTERIORS

---------------------

1) although not super comfy the car is comfortable enough

2) the middle console is just class

3) the speedo, odo, rpm meter are white dials which again looks attractive

4) the seats are fire resistant

5) top of the line model has power windows, central locking etc

6) dual colored plastic and leather are used for the interiors which actually look dull lets look at some more pros and cons

PROS

---------------------

+amazing value for money

+very easy to drive considering its size

+good interiors

+responsive engine and steering

+still turns heads whereever you go

+hard to believe its made by mahindra

+only car to win cnbc, bsm and bbc awards in the same year

CONS

----------------------

-lack of choice of colors

-dull interior colours

-mileage could have been better

-not highly polished

-not very good customer service from dealers

-a bit noisy

-slight room for improvement

FINAL VERDICT

-----------------------

M & M scorpio is a pleasure to drive and own and I think this might be the car that mahindra might give constant upgrades and trust me after 2-3 years the scorpios that will be available will be one of the best SUV available in INDIA

P.S-though scorpio is not originally a suv it is a car but due to its sales theres a whole new suv market opened in india from nissans x-trail to hyundai terracan every major comp is launching a new suv in india also please don't compare the scorpio to the qualis both are diff to each other
