Mahindra Scorpio 2.0 Reviews

Petaling Jaya Malaysia
India in Malaysia
Sep 16, 2005 11:43 AM 14439 Views

I am from Malaysia.

The Scorpio was launched in April 2005. At that time I was looking for a MPV/SUV and for the last 9 months was looking at models from Toyota, Nissan and other. There were 3 areas that I was looking at i.e. space (at least 7 seater), manual and price. Most of the models had one or the other.

When I saw the Scorpio in the new paper, we decided to go to the showroom for a view. At first sight the huge unit had attracted me, sitting in the unit at the show room the space that I was looking for was there and it could sit 8 people. It was manual and the price was good. The petrol 2.0 version.

Even before leaving the showroom decided that I will purchase it but wanted to go for a test drive and we did it the next day.

It is fine machine but as another writer indicated about the noise level. If you are in the vehicle and windows are up you will not hear the engine but if you are outside the is some level of noise.

It is a much more solid unit compared to the Japanese units.

My only other concern is at full capacity the air-con running a 1speed is not enough to cool the passengers we need to put it as speed two.

It is the best vehicle in its range in Malaysia.

Wish there will be more aggressive marketing of the unit to increase awareness.

I test drove the beast...

My black Scorpio was looking a bit tired so I thought it was time to trade him in (to me a car is not a girl... its a dude... call me sexist... an MVP or whatever bad names you want to call me... I dont care).

ATTENTION YOU AUTO FREAKS... THIS IS BASED ON A TEST RIDE

phew... glad to get that over with...

The Scorpio had been a great ally and had made distances like Bangalore to Manali a breeze. Its made it safely through some real rough terrain be it ghats or jungle. Its even took a rear end collision from a reckless Honda City without so much as a dent (the foot step at the back got a little dented... the Honda City lost its entire face). Nearly two years and the car still owns the road.

The reason for the thought of an upgrade was the way the Scorpio CRDe was being marketed. An urge to know what all the new features were. And why the price went up by a whopping almost 2 lakh rupees

Before I go on to the test drive part... heres my take on my 2003 - Scorpio DX

Quick Glance: Mahindra Scorpio DX

==========================

The positives

  • Its a Behemoth: The sheer size and weight makes it a car that even lorries respect.

  • Its a powerhouse: The 2.6 litre turbo charged diesel engine churns out some serious power (109bhp). I've hit the 160+ mark pretty often and it holds its own.

  • Its a decent ride: Great clearance, pretty good 5 speed transmission, power steering... the works

The negatives

  • BRAKING - try slowing down at 100+ kmph and you'll see that you stop a few yards away from where you wanted it to stop.

  • Second row leg space is the pits.

  • Why do they make such a wonderful car and compromise on fixtures such as those clunky door handles and weird switches.

In spite of the flaws, the car justified its price tag and gave a decent mileage that averaged 10 kmpl.

Enter CRDe

==========================

Like I said earlier, they boosted the price of the higher end version to around 9.2 Lakhs give or take a few thousands depending on the city. Now you need to have a serious make-over and loads of improvements to justify that price tag. Here are the enhancements:

  • CRDe technology - yeah... its CRD with an E and not an I. Common Rail Direct Engine! (heh heh... not that it made my life easier). CRDe boosts fuel efficiency and power. This new beast churns out 115bhp compared to the earlier versions 109bhp.

  • The transmission is much smoother. Shifting between gears is real sweet.

  • They've chopped the number of seats to increase the leg room on row 2. While this is cool, the boot area is much smaller now. They come in 7 and 8 seater versions now (used to be 8 and 9 seater versions).

  • The new Scorpio SPEAKS! If your fuel is low or you arent wearing a seat belt, the car tells you to buckle up or fill her up (not in those terms but yes... )

  • The Interiors have been enhanced. The seats are more comfortable with arm rests. The Dashboard has gone through plastic surgery.

  • Other features include the bull bar and the ski rack, rear window demister and wipers... oh yes... the dual tone paint job.

  • The lower end models lose out on the voice alerts, bull bar, ski rack and has a Blaupunkt and not a Kenwood sound system like the higher end one.

  • Safety features have been upgraded too. They've incorporated crumple zones to protect passengers and the braking has been improved.

Overall

==========================

The ride has improved, the beast looks more intense and beautiful but... I wouldnt pay the near 2 lakh difference for cosmetic changes and a marginal power boost.

Good work Mahindra... now... can you work on the pricing please?

It loses a star for that one factor... the price!

Best of the Best

A very Good vehicle from Mahindra And Mahindra.

Some issues I faced are:

1: The A/C Knobs often breaks.

2: Brakes need to be improved.

3: Hand brake has no effect.

4: After sales service need to be improved.

5: Driving in rain is bit difficult because the water often spills to our front glass that reduces visibility.

6: The exterior has some decent rust.

Overall a very good car. Best for Indian roads. My car has completed 55,000 KM and the maintenance cost is not too high.

Regarding drive its very stable in 100-115 kmph in Kerala roads, May be much more better in other states. Handling is a lot better than a lot of other cars I have drove.

No breakdowns reported till now. Very nice engine, good solid feel to the automobile.

A/C is very powerful. Seats are OK.

Fuel Efficiency: 10-11 with A/C

Hai friends

I think the following features help to improve the quality of the

''MAHINDRA SCORPIO'':

most of the accidents are to be possible ,due to the reason of sleeping of the driver. That defects are to be overcomed by the following points.

1.FIRST THE SENSOR IS FIXED AT THE BOTTOM SIDE OF THE DRIVER'S CUSHION.

2.THAT SENSOR SENSING THE DRIVER'S BRAIN.

3.AT THAT TIME OF ACTUAL CONDITIONS,NO OPERATIONS ARE TO BE PERFORMED.

4.WHEN THE DRIVER GOING TO SLEEPING,THAT SENSOR PERFORMED ONE OPERATION .

  1. DUE TO THIS DRIVER'S CUSHION ARE TO BE GOING TO MOVING STATE.

6.SO THIS TYPE OF MOVEMENT IS SUFFICIENT TO WAKE UP THE DRIVER.

  1. WHEN THE DRIVER RETURN TO NORMAL STATE,THAT CUSHION GOING TO STABLE STATE.

Scorpio CRDE-The King of the road.
Jul 03, 2005 09:39 PM 55213 Views

Hi Friends,

I am from Chennai ( Tambaram ) and this was my personal opinion about my test drive with Mahindra Scorpio CRDE the ultimate SUV.

I went for a test drive of the new SCORPIO CRDE (Common Rail Diesel Engine)-This was a refinement of the old Scorpio made to meet out the new euro 3 Norms in reducing Pollution from Diesel Cars.

The time the car was with me:

I drove for 2 hours in a mixed mode of city traffic + Highway to test the top speed. Here I will list out the features step by step.

POWER:

2600 CC CRDE Engine-115 BHP-28.3 TORQUE

The car was fantastic to drive and I would call this as a powerhorse. The AC was at full blast and the car went effortlessly and this was the speeds I obtained with the Aircon on at full blast.I had to look at the speedometer to know that I was in 100 often.Throughout my way the autos and other vehicles jus gave me way and I felt thrilled.Even the cops stare at u to check whether u r some politician.

1 st : 40

2 nd :65

3 rd : 80

4 th : 110

5 th : went upto 145

Models Available :

Scorpio : Normal Version(Fully painted with the same colour and power steering will be stripped out)

Scorpio DX : All features in Slx except voice based system,Power windows,Captain seats(which provides armrest to the front and back passengers)

Scorpio SLX : Dual colored body,Voice based system(It will warn u wear seat belts,if doors are unlocked and so many voice prerecorded options),Power Steering,Power Windows,Fog lamps,Demister,Captain Seats(Excellent because the driver can rest his arm after the gear changes which reduces the shoulder pain normally on long drives),

16 inch massive extra large wheels,New suspension under CRDE model

The Mahindra representative told me that unlike other cars where oil is used as a lubrication, here in scorpio Diesel is used for lubrication along with oil and he told me that I should always maintain 10 litres in my tank.Further he told me that the new scorpio was designed keeping in mind of all the previous problems and it was naturally problem free.

It has a new fuel filter which only needs a replacement after 40000 km.

I asked him about the brake failures occurring in scorpio in the previous models and I came to know that it was true and the sensors failed attimes and now that a new sensor with backup had been used in new CRDE.The type of bakes used were LSPV.

The main pluspoint was the height at which the passengers sit inside the car.We can see the rooftops of all the other cars and the road visibility is fantastic.Power steering was very easy to use and the car responded in ease and I never had any feeling of driving this big sized car.

CRDE was really smooth and still I would say that the noise has come down to a level not still in comparison with a pertrol engine. The gearsift was also easy to make.

INTERIORS :

The interiors were matched in accordance with the body colour and the slx version I drove had a wood finish control panel. The aircon was very good with both options of heating as well as cooling in the front and back.

Mileage:

The mileage was the biggest thing about this car.The car will return 10+ irrespective of how u drive. But the dealer promised 13 + on highway and more if we drive carefully.

Suspension was very good because of the broad tyres and the massive 2 ton + car along with new suspension. The kenwood music system was a crap and certain it needs replacement with a mp3 system.

Mahindra is giving out a 20000 km complete warranty and commits that any mechanic could repair the car at any roadside shop.

The surprising thing about scorpio is it is classified as a omnibus by RTO and not as a car.

The last thing is people stare at this car at any point anywhere and I noticed this carefully during my two hour experience. The looks are fantastic along with the good power makes this car most preferable to buy.The only bottleneck is the price which comes at around 9 lakhs for tht top end slx version along with Insurance, roadtax and registration.

Kudos to mahindra for coming out with such a nice product and I would suggest mahindra to throw their marketing team out and hire fresh people to make the sales boom.

Nothin else will do from airplane is too old ad and this new CRDE needs a new ad to bring out the cars real strength.

I just gave a phone call to INDIA GARAGE in chennai and one Mr Ramesh came to my place the next day along with an slx version and explained to me in detail. It looked as if he would let me test drive any number of hours without hesitation and was very kind in explaining to me about the car.

I would definetely go to but it.

Mail me at emaildhinesh@gmail.com if u have question and pls do not forget to rate this review by sparing ur valuable time.

Whenever I write a review alone I check my mail atleast 100 times in a day to check out what other people think about my review so pls do it.

After this test drive I have booked my car from INDIA GARAGE,chennai and I cannot believe I got the car in a record 4 days time.

Moreover I am getting a 10,000 rs discount with a gift of one of this choice(lucky draw).due to mahindra 60 anniversary celebration.

1)samsung home theatre

2)timex watch worth 16000

3)scorpio basic version

4)samsung 110l fridge

moreover 5 yrs warranty

with 60000 km free oil and other service.

I sold my CRDe after 8 months
Apr 20, 2005 01:29 PM 24003 Views

This is an UPDATE to my earlier review.

I have now sold the CRDe after owning it for 8 months. Here are some observations about the CRDe. My decision to sell the CRDe was due to three main reasons:

  1. The steering and vehicle-control at speeds above 80 kmph is

extremely vague. Not only is there minimal feedback, the vehicle tends to ''wander''. This makes one feel highly unsafe, especially given that the CRDe does not have ABS or air-bags.

  1. The brakes, albeit improved over the earlier version, are just not

commensurate with the weight and resultant momentum of the Scorpio - they cannot bring the vehicle to a sure halt in the time and distance required.

  1. The suspension leaves a whole lot to be desired - the vehicle rolls,

pitches and yaws a bit too much for comfort, resulting in early set-in of driving fatigue on long journeys.

I am quite certain that I will become a Mahindra customer once again at a point in time when the company brings out a high-end version of an SUV that overcomes the above problems... even if it means that one has to pay a lakh or even more.

Other minor improvements that the company can make on the CRDe are:

  1. The dashboard material needs to be of a softer, more yielding

material - presently, the hard fibre scuffs very easily and makes the interiors look scruffy and déclassé.

  1. The side view mirrors need to be upsized - it is very difficult to

study the left-side one when driving, since it is relatively too small and also because the vehicle is very wide.

  1. The clutch pedal must be made softer - maybe even as soft as that of

a sedan. In stop-go traffic, it becomes tiring to drive the Scorpio and the left leg becomes pretty tired.

  1. When one opens the bonnet of a 6 month-old Scorpio (especially after

the monsoon), one sees too many spots of rust - this is what one expects in an Ambassador or Fiat, not in a relatively more expensive vehicle. Perhaps the rust spots are not of any consequence - it just leaves a poor impression and makes one wonder about the insides that one cannot see!

  1. The steering needs to be stiffened - it is just too free for

comfort. After all, this is a macho SUV. Besides, it makes one feel very unsafe to drive at higher speeds, since one has to concentrate 100% of the time since a tiny, involuntary twitch of the wrist can take the vehicle off the road (or worse)

  1. The folding rear seats of the 7 seater need to be fastened more

firmly than the flimsy Velcro strap permits - else, they add to the rattles and noises, especially on not-so-smooth roads.

  1. In stop-go traffic, especially when the tachometer is reading around 1500, the vehicle picks up an unplanned spurt of speed when the turbo kicks in... even when the foot is OFF the accelerator - one has to be very conscious of this characteristic, else it can lead to an accident.

  2. The CRDe must be made available with a higher-end model that incorporates safety features like twin airbags and ABS, EBD, Traction Control. Discerning customers don't want to sacrifice safety for the sake of price.

Good becomes better!
Apr 10, 2005 01:57 PM 36008 Views

The Scorpio created a wave in the Indian car market when it was launched. It is still selling very well, with people buying it because of its SUV image. The Scorpio was by and large a good car, but its handling wasn't very good; neither was the refinement and some other minor shortcomings. Moreover, the Scorpio is now going international, so Mahindra has to keep improving.

Most importantly, the Euro-III emission norms are now into effect. Since the Scorpio couldn't meet the new norms, the engine had to become cleaner, and since it was a diesel, the best way was to apply CRDi technology. Mahindra started the development of its CRDe Scorpio just a year back, in partnership with MICO BOSCH. And now it has been launched much to the delight of customers and auto buffs. At last, we have a world class SUV with an engine that matches standards across the world. I have written a full-fledged review regarding this popular vehicle.

Aesthetics- Rugged looks, good build, finish not so good.

One of the main reasons why the Scorpio was popular was its SUV-like butch styling. Even though it wasn't a complete off roader, it did have that image. The front styling hasn't changed much; in fact I can't find any notable change. So there are the aggressive headlamps, and the seven horizontal slot grille.

It imparts an angry aggressive character, which should go well with customers. The side also doesn't have any change. It doesn't look as smooth as, say the Safari, but looks okay. The lines are somewhat angular, and the side cladding enhances its appeal. Alloys are the same old attractive ones. The rear seems to slope too steeply. It is a bit too flat for my liking, and the tiny tail lamps don't do much to hide this.

This may be the only possible shortcoming in the styling of the Scorpio. The build is of good quality. Fit of the parts isn't all that good, and finish is just satisfactory.

Comfort- Comfortable but not very spacious

The Scorpio's interior also doesn't have any big change. The steering is grippy and is placed somewhat at the right spot. The instrument panel looks stylish with the oval dials and chrome bordering. Once you settle on the seats, you do feel comfortable, and space is okay. The dashboard has a new fiber and wood finish, which is quite nice. It is well laid out, with just one new air con feature (power blower). This is for hot conditions, and is very effective.

There are power windows all around. Quality can't be called exceptional, but it is average. Now comes the problem. The rear seats are mostly okay on comfort, but the legroom just isn't enough for an SUV of its size. Headroom is just okay, and three people can sit in decent comfort. The third row as usual is only for kids. You can fold the seats to get more luggage space. I feel the Scorpio would be better off with two spacious rows of seats rather than three cramped rows. This can at least be given as an option.

Engine and performance- Awesome CRDi unit, improved performance.

This is the best part of the new Scorpio. It is a 2600 cc common rail turbo charged diesel engine. This CRDi unit, (which Scorpio strangely calls CRDe where 'e' stands for engine) is much more refined than the old unit. The power is up only marginally, by 6 bhp, to 115 bhp. I think M&M said that this can be upped even more, but it was sufficient. Torque is up to 28.3 kgm. Don't think this is an old ancient CRDi unit. It is actually the second generation unit, which is being used world over. The pump pressure is 1600 bar, which is the norm internationally. So first, it is a CRDi, and then it is an advanced CRDi engine!

Initial acceleration is very good. Low-end torque is good, and it is more involving to drive. 60 km/h is achieved in 6 seconds, an improvement over the old Scorpio. The engine is quite refined even at higher levels on the rev range. The gearshift is not slick; it is notchy and a little uncomfortable. High-end punch was an advantage on the old Scorpio, and even on this version it is very much so. The top speed it manages is 152 km/h (8 up on the old Scorpio), which is very good taking into consideration its weight of 1.9 tones. Even though power isn't improved a lot, the driver involvement is more, though I can't find any particular reason.

Ride and Handling- Okay ride, bad handling.

The Scorpio isn't structured around a monocoque, so ride and handling won't be very impressive. The ride is good though, and it is quite comfortable. But there is a considerable amount of body roll, thus adversely affecting the handling. It is by no means a good handler, and its weight makes it even worse. Cornering at high speeds makes it roll a lot, and is sometimes scary. So I suggest that you be relaxed while driving it, instead of pushing it to the limit while cornering. On the highway too, it isn't as stable as one would like it to be.

Running costs, service backup- More or less the same economy, average servicing.

In spite of the new CRDi unit, the Scorpio's efficiency doesn't show much of a change, which isn't anything bad. In tough city conditions, it manages above 10 km/l, while on the highway; it will return at least 12-13 km/l. In mixed conditions it returns an average of 11-12 km/l. So it is okay overall. The service backup of M&M isn't all that very good. Its dealer network isn't as extensive as, say Maruti. Also, the quality of service is supposedly just okay. Spare parts will be available easily, and they won't be very costly either. But service is something you will have to check out before buying the car.

So what does this new CRDi power plant give the Scorpio? As far as the looks and comfort go, there hasn't been any major change as such. But the refinement has improved considerably. The slightly higher power and torque figures ensure marginally better performance. One disadvantage, handling hasn't been sorted out as yet. Hopefully, the other variants of the Scorpio will improve on this. Fuel economy is also the almost the same.

You may feel that the improvements are minor, but so is the price increase. It just costs some 10k extra, and for all these improvements, I don't think that is much. Besides, we Indians have to get the latest and best from the manufacturers. So I whole-heartedly recommend the Scorpio CRDe, I think we have yet another success from Mahindra.

VERDICT- Only a small improvement, but more than worth the price.

Scorpio SLx, fully loaded
Apr 04, 2005 06:05 PM 14162 Views

Nov 13 2006 - Updating my review today. Very sad to put here that the vehicle for which I wrote the review below, was stolen. It is rare to hear that a vehicle is stolen (especially in a place like Pune). It has been almost 3 months now, and neither the cops, not the Insurance investigators could trace the vehicle. Just read another review at Mouthshut, stating that the Slx version, the rear window can be easily removed, to flick the vehicle. Got the Insurance claim, to pay off my loan, but lost around 2.5L in Depreciation and the Road Tax, Insurance premium and the additional stuff that I had put in to deck up the vehicle.

Vehicle is superb, my advise to all those who plan to purchase, the security system provided by Mahindra is not enough, better invest some more in an additional security device. Make sure to have a couple of them, so that it is not easy to steal the vehicle.

____________________________________________________________________________

April 4th 2005 - Just got the new Tungsten Blue Colour this week. Came to know from the dealer of Mahindra that I am the first owner of this colour in Pune, so got Royal treatment from them. First week report is that the drive is too good and comfortable for the front seaters, but, a little bumpy for the back seaters, probably because my hands are not set on the vehicle. Excellent pickup in comparison to a Safari (as I test drove Safari and a Scorpio on the same day). Speed wise, Drove 150KM/hr on Mumbai Pune express way. It felt very sturdy and balanced. (I am actually not supposed to take it above 100 as it has not crossed 1000 km mark). Voice messaging system (VMS) is very good. Keeps reminding me if a door is not closed properly or if the hand brakes are not totally down. Many more messages which I still need to discover. Security system and Follow Me Home Lights are value adds. Will update more after some weeks.

SMALL THINGS DOES MATTER .....
Apr 03, 2005 09:44 PM 9912 Views

Well, I always felt the need for a muv like scorpio, and mahindra did it. scorpio has great looks which always facinated me . After I bought fully loaded SLX model IN FEB 2005 ..then I had the privlage of driving n testing my scorpio ( bull ).

Now instead of giving the positive aspects ....I want to mention some features which I and other proud owners of scorpio felt the need to.....and want the same to be followed by mahindra ...

1) NOT suitable on bad roads even with little pot holes....gives a BUMPY RIDE... MAHINDRA SERIOUSLY NEEDS TO CHANGE THE SUSPENSION ... something similar to that of Qualis .

2) Kenwood music system is provided , BUT speakers are of POOR and LOW quality..if we increase the volume the voice shatters..i got them changed twice but the prob remained the same..finally I went for some good ones from outside.

3) REAR ..A.C ( Air Conditioner ) which is placed in between the front seats should ve been neatly mounted at the back end. because it causes inconvenience to the person sitting in the centre on the middle seat, as he is unable to strech his legs....if this is the case then why to boast of space and decrease the capacity frm 9 seats to 7 in slx model.

4) When A.C is switched on it takes load .. speed decreases .... should not happen with such a powerfull engine 2609 cc ,109 BHP. THE BULL SHOULD CHARGE AT ITS FULL UNDER ALL CONDITIONS......

MAHINDRA AND ITS ENGINEERS SHOULD TAKE IT SERIOUSLY ...CAUSE ITS THE VOICE OF CUSTOMERS .... WE AT OUR END WOULD ALWAYS LIKE MAHINDRA TO PERFORM BETTER AND MOVE AHEAD OF OTHERS AND PROVIDE ITS CUSTOMERS WITH THE BEST.

NOTE :-

1) I would like MAHINDRA to RECALL SCORPIOS sold in 2005 and change the

SUSPENSION ..... at least .

2) DO SOMETHING ABOUT THE A.C and other customers greivences

ITS A NICE BUY ALLTOGETHER

A Scorpio for a Scorpion, nothing else will do....
Apr 03, 2005 11:27 AM 15906 Views

I am a Scorpion, 52, a very senior Government Officer, traversing 38 kms from residence in New Bombay to Ballard Estate, daily. I have been driving my Scorpio for the last six months and my experience has been as thrilling as the challenges I take up in my line of work

I am an experienced driver, with more than 15 years of fast driving experience and after my experiments with a starting with a Willy?s long ago, a few Maruti variants, Commander, Tata Sumo and motor cycles, I decided to have a vehicle that would speak my language, aggressive, powerful and intelligent and that was when I went for a Scorpio.

The fellow drivers would know, at least when I am on the driver's seat on my Scorpio what a powerful vehicle my Scorpio is. Off the Uran phatak crossing, off the busiest Sanpada signals, off the Vashi toll gate, my Scorpio is the first</> vehicle to zoom past every other car, Ford Endeavor, Cherolet Tavera included.

All the rest are cars anyway and I do not want to comment on them. The highway truckers, taxi drivers and invariably oil tankers have a tendency, sometimes proclivity, to cling on to the right lane, blocking all other vehicles, come what may.

In the past, driving other cars, I either used to honk my horn forever, or go for a left overtake at the first available opportunity. Not with Scorpio, a big vroom on the throttle and a blaring, sharp horn are all it takes to get my way through. Sometimes I have a few small cars ahead of me, all blowing their horns with no avail on the part of the truck.

I draw near the car ahead and give a sharp horn and a vroom. The truck, willy nilly, moves left and the grateful convoy give me way. Some drivers do object but most of them understand and give me way ahead.

I have a special pass for the BPT Road and the drivers, who know me well let me go first so that they could safely follow me through the narrow corridors of the BPT Road. Those who don?t, had better know, when my Scorpio is on the prowl.

In the D'Mello Road, I get priority clearance, especially in the night, when my red and gold SLX assumes a formidable, demoniacal facade. The small cars are scared of its mean and ugly smile and the bigger cars are of her meaner headlights and fog lights, which I always keep on.

Once I took my Scorpio to the scary heights of Ekveera temple off Lonavla, with my extended family of 12 members. When I had climbed nearly till the penultimate 'Z' turn, an upshot driver climbing down from the top overtook a descending vehicle and came neatly close to my bumper. I had to screech to halt. That was not the problem.

My vehicle was at a slope of about 45% and on the clutch it started rolling back, even with the handbrake. With heart up my throat, I told my wife to release the handbrake and praying to God, I gave a full throttle in the first gear. My Scorpio went up the steep climb like a new-born colt and the dumbstruck row of the cars and two-wheelers ahead and behind me cheered me off (Mind you, I am 52 and look 55) with thunderous applause. I could have caused a series of disasters that day.

Of course, I have some complaints about my Scorpio. The AC is a bit slow, not like my Maruti Alto. It still has the remnants of the peculiar Mahindra droll, which I like thought, but my family doesn't. The service agencies especially the Autopoint at Cotton Green, are no good, too bureaucratic even for a senior bureaucrat like me.

But still, given a choice, I will go for Mahindra Scorpio, Euro III, CRDi model. Nothing else will do.

Utter nonsense update 1

First thanks for the reviews, some people may actually have perfectly good Scorpio's but my vehicle has a problem and mahindra has still to figure out what the problem is.

Problems that were existing in the in the first place are still there even after the vehicle has been checked and the service center certify that the problems have been sorted out.

How do you explain that, true it might be one bad apple but has anything been done about it, I would say nothing on the part of mahindra as the problems still exist or mabe they cannot figur out what the problem is either way I am the one with a bad Scorpio.

Further more How would you react if you own a vehicle for 3 months out of which your vehicle spends 1 month going back and forth to the Mahindra work shop and the problems with the vehicle are still not solved? I would really like to see what someone in that situation would do!!!!.

Belive me when I say no one should have the problems I have with a brand New vehicle and as of today not more that 5 months old.

Which ever way you look at it, one bad apple in a basket of good apples is still a bad apple.

Not so hot

This review is based purely on my experience with the Scorpio.

2 months back I went for a family vacation to North Bengal (Darjeeling, Kurseong and Kalingpong). We had a Scorpio at our disposal. My initial observation is that it is very sturdy and powerful. Had plenty of revs where it matters, the only drawback is that it was not a 4 wheel drive. That said, it gave us good service and ride. The HVAC performed very well. (The vehicle was driven from Guwahati and back). It took the hill roads very well. In terms of space, it is very spacious, both in the front and back, including the 3 row seats. It comfortable took 6 people in a 2x2x2 seating. The only minus point was getting in and out of the 3rd row seats.

Now comes the main problem faced. At Kalingpong the vehicle began giving problems. When it was taken to the local mechanic, it was discovered that the inner right hubcap was missing, due to which the grease was freely flowing out. Not a good thing to have while driving the Hill roads, believe me! A makeshift cap was fitted and we made it back to Kurseong, where we were staying. We had to stop and throw water on the wheels though!

The next day we were to drive back to Guwahati. It made it to Siliguri when there was wobbling movement. We had to give it to the Mahindra service station for repairs that took about 4 hrs. They replaced the inner hub cap and replaced the grease and did some other maintenance work. Following that we proceeded to Guwahati.

The journey was uneventful, although the unsteady movement was still present. Later we found that my uncle who has a Scorpio as well, had a similar problem. He had once taken it to the tea gardens in Upper Assam, after which his vehicle started to wobbly. He too found that the inner hub caps in his Scorpio was missing. The problem persisted even after getting a full maintenance and repair done. Since then he is not using the Scorpio so much.

My observation from this is that the Scorpio is a very good city SUV. It is not meant for outdoor roads!

Poor imitation of Jeep Liberty

A Russian car, LADA 110, sells for 2 lacs and it is size of Honda city(civic) and has same space as in city(civic). Although its quality is not as good. My point is if Russia can sell car like civic for 2 lacs, why the hell on earth in India they sell 800 for the same price. Price of material is cheaper in India and labor is cheaper so we should be able to build similar car under 1 lac, right?

I am very baffled by home-grown manufacturers, I don't understand why they cannot build a world-class vechicle. Here in States, even kids are building cars. Take the case of Scorpio, which sells for upwards of seven lacs but offer very little. It has a tiny engine to begin with. Car that size needs atleast 160 BHP if it wants to have 0-100 in around 10 seconds which itself is not that great. The Scorpio's engine has to be revved higher while accelerating and it is a noisy engine and car's front would vibrate.

It is supposed to be an off-road vehicle but it has 7 inches of clearance, a decent off-roader needs atleast 30 degree of approach angle but Scorpio has its in mid-twenties. Let's discuss its styling, it looks like cheap copy of Jeep's new SUV called Liberty. I can understand lack of airbags, traction control, and other fancy things, however its brakes are bad, one guy reported the brakes failed in his Scorpio!

I am sure we can do better!

Fantastic value for money

I read all the reviews out here on the Scorpio.

Just one question - How many of you guys think that the Scorpio has never been crash tested? Well you are totally wrong. The Scorpio is sold in Europe and in Europe, crash testing falls under the Federation International de Automobile, which publishes the Euro NCAP results. Since 1998, all new cars sold in the European Union are tested.

I cant blame Mahindra?s since its not necessary per Indian laws, I blame morons who like to scaremonger.

I am pretending in my imagination that I am driving a Scorpio now. Not mine thankfully. So I?m driving with my eyes blindfolded sitting next to my imaginary friend Bobo the clown.

Here?s what I feel: Looks: I am the ugliest person ever made. Enough about me lets talk about the Scorpio, everything is in proportion. The front grill borrows from the Toyota Landcruiser. I?ve not seen better creativity on window grills. I like the rear end treatment though. Its classy. But one good section does not a vehicle make so lets look at the rest of the car.

Legroom: Okay in front. the same in the back. The seats at the extreme rear are only meant for kids.

Lighting, sound and electrics: Bright headlights. Thats the good part. The speakers fitted as standard are not too loud either.

Engine: Powerful enough for the city. It is a diesel and this is a Mahindra so we do not expect it to sound like a Mercedes diesel. Of course not as noisy as the rest of the Mahindra vehicles and it costs only 7 lakhs for Christs sake.

Suspension: OK. Only the front passengers are insulated. The rest of the passengers will suffer going over the bumps and potholes in India. If you want more double up your money and buy a Ford Endeavour.

Steering: Power steering the only saving grace. The turning radius is big as it is a large vehicle. Those wanting a small turning circle should buy a Bajaj scooter. The steering can feel too light.

Visibility: Front and sides are okay. But you cant see much else. Parking is an effort if you are a 3 foot midges and do not have enough cushions to prop yourself on.

Off road ability: The Scorpio is not an SUV and is not marketed as one. Some morons expect Traction control, Anti lock brakes, Stability control and Slip differentials??? I ask them what do you expect for 7 lakh. If you want more, pay 35 lakh and buy a Shogun/Pajero. When I say off road, I mean serious off roading. Going to Kashmir looking for brothels does not count as off roading.

Speed: I start laughing when people tell me they travel at 140 kmph on the Scorpio. Its not a sports car and Indian roads are rubbish. If you want to travel at those crazy speeds buy a Skoda Octavia (still the hub of jokes in Europe despite VW now owning Skoda). All you guys who travel above 100 kmph on such vehicles and survive obviously have God watching over your shoulder. Good luck.

Fit and finish: I like the paint job. Good colours and seems to be a long lasting variety. Interiors are great. If you are a dimwit and expect heated leather seats in a 7 lakh car then you should save your money and get a brain transplant (even a transplant with a monkeys brain will improve your brain).

Wheels: I?ve read some reviews saying how much they love the ??big bulbous?? wheels. Have you guys ever tried changing tyres on the Scorpio ? Again unless you are a 3 foot midget or a total freak its not too hard to change the tyre.

All said and done if a vehicle is crash tested for the EU market I will buy it.

Two years and the sting still remains

MAHINDRA SCORPIO

When mahindra and mahindra launched their new mystery vehicle two years ago everyone was shocked because not even in the wildest of dreams had anyone thought M & M a company which is good at making a rural jeeps and tractors will make a city car , yes M&M do call the scorpio a car and not a MUV or SUV, its sleek looks from the outside and equally awe ?inspiring interiors were enough to make you buy it instantly, that is if you had the money. Let us look at the features one on one shall we..

PRICE

Generally this is given at the bottom but, why bother reading if you don?t have the money to buy it ,so here it is right at the top scorpio is available in 4 models in the diesel variant and the price starts from 6.30lakh-7.80 lakh ex showroom without insurance ,registration etc etc so if the price is within your reach read on

MODELS

Scorpio 2.6 turbo

Basic scorpio with a/c and power-steering as standard

Scorpio 2.6 turbo DX

Scorpio that has a/c ,power steering, plastic cladding, wheel caps as standard

Scorpio 2.6 turbo GLX

a/c , power-steering ,body colored cladding, power windows ,central locking, rear window defroster, ski rack and wheel caps rear wiper and stereo system

scorpio 2.6 turbo SLX

all of the above in GLX plus two toned body color( exterior as well as interiors) and a sensor which alerts you on various things.

OTHER MODELS

Petrol model which is not worth mentioning and

A 4 wheel drive version which is only made to order

You know the price ,you know the features now see what else the car has to offer

UNDER THE HOOD

2600 cc (not exactly) turbo charged engine ,two years ago people said reliabily was not tested now two years later no one complains. also because of the enormous power under the hood scorpio is easily one of the fastest car that a average Indian can buy .

EXTERIORS

Well as you might have seen for yourself the scorpio is also one of the best looking cars India has made (indigenously) (look at the competition ambassador, mar 800 hahaha),the scorpio looks best with the cladding on aither in a dual shade or in body colored but isn?t quiet pretty in the plastic ones .also the advantage it gives you while driving this cars is the it scares your fellow riders, rickshawallas, motorcyclist and even car owners.also the scorpio still can turn heads even after two years after launch only the right person has to sit at the driver seat ;)

INTERIORS

The scorpio can seat 8-9 compartably depending on what type you choose, first the legroom at all the three rows is not that great but the fabulous interiors make up for it ,although not as polished as some phoren cars it still does a fab job. The a/c is one of the best in its class and the dashboard and the instrument panel at the front is absolutely best compare it to anything even qualis or tavera .the seats are comfortable and they are fire resistant too. only problem with the interiors is that if you want to add some extra speakers and woofers god bless you but there is very little space left for you to do it so.

RIDING THE BEAST

The scorpio comes with speed sensitive powersteering so if you know to drive then you definetly can drive this , the handling at low speeds is no problems for most cars ,but even on high speeds the scorpio handles very very swiftly , also the ride quality is very impressive considering the condition of the Indian roads ,the gear shift is smooth and is a 5 speed manual one .also the moment you ride it it gives you a feeling of being on top due to the height of the car , although scorpio is the greatest car but the mixture of doing so many good things make it into a gr8 package

LOOSE ENDS

So everything thing has flaws maybe the maybach too has one but scorpio has more than one;)

The brakes although good are quiet weak which might become critical when quick braking is required

The gear shifting can also get a bit flawed sometimes (by flawed I mean a bit stiff)

Although the scorpio is a great package it could have been better the Indian make clearly shows with some cheap plastics used here and there

And some minor ones

Oh well how can I forget the one thing that every Indian looks into while buying a car

Well the scorpio returns a decent 9-10 and 10-13 in cities with the aircon on

Also the maintanence of the car is not all that expensive and being a M&M vehicle you can drive it in most of the terrain our great land throws up at you

Also I would like to see a few more thing if M&M do update the scorpio

ALLOY WHEELS as standard

AIRBAGS

An increase in the overall length

Some extra colors

And a bit more sting

Also please don?t compare this car to another, buy it just to drive it.

I read all the reviews out here on the scorpio. Just one question - How many of you guys know that the Scorpio has never been crash tested? Never. Not one safety rating ever done on

this vehicle.

I cant blame the Mahindra’s since its not necessary per Indian laws. We have more than enough people to sacrifice. But buyers should atleast be aware.

I am driving a Scorpio now. Not mine thankfully. So I’m thrashing the vehicle as much as I can.

Here’s what I feel:

Looks: Probably the ugliest Mahindra Jeep ever made. Everything is out of proportion. The front is ugly. I’ve seen better creativity on window grills. I like the rear end treatement though. Its classy. But one good section does not a vehicle make.

Legroom: Okay in front. Cramped in the back. The seats at the extreme rear are only meant for kids.

Lighting and electricals: Bright headlights. Thats the good part. The bad part is other bulbs keep popping. Indicators, instrument panel LED’s all stop working after a while.

Engine: Powerful enough for the city. But noisy. Of course not as noisy as the rest of the Mahindra vehicles but it could certainly use some more sound proofing. It costs 7 lakhs for christs sake.

Suspension: Awful. Only the front passengers are insulated. The rest of the passengers will suffer going over the bumps and potholes in India.

Steering: Power steering the only saving grace. The turning radius is too big.

Visibility: Front and sides are okay. But you cant see much else. Parking is an effort.

Off road ability: A big joke. The scorpio is not an SUV. Where are the Traction control, Anti lock brakes, Stability control and Slip differentials??? How can you call it an SUV without these things?

When I say offroad, I mean serious off roading. Going to your village to see granny does not count as off roading.

Speed: I start laughing when people tell me they travel at 140 kmph on the Scorpio. Its not a sports car. Its a utility vehicle. If you want to travel at those crazy speeds buy a Skoda Octavia. All you guys who travel above 100 kmph on such vehicles and survive obviously have God watching over your shoulder. Good luck.

Fit and finish: I like the paint job. Good colors and seems to be a long lasting variety. Interiors leave much to be desired. If I was paying 7 lakhs for this vehicle I expect heated leather seats.

Wheels: I’ve read some reviews saying how much they love the ’’big bulbous’’ wheels. Have you guys ever tried changing tyres on the Scorpio. I wont tell you. Find out for yourself.

And the name Scorpio. Couldnt they have chosen an original name? I think Ford came out with the Scorpio name in the late 80’s. Obviously Mr.Mahindra’s wife liked that name and they’re stuck with it.

All said and done if a vehicle is not crash tested I will not buy it.

New Delhi INDIA
Scorpio - 1st Service
Nov 15, 2004 12:04 PM 10913 Views

I dont know how many of you have read my first review but I would certainly like to add some points to it as my car has gone thru it's first service and I would like to share with you some problems that came during the first few months.

1) The average with AC before first service was 8 KM/ltr and is still 8KM/ltr. I was hoping that it would improve to about 10 but sadly it refused to budge.

2) Brakes: This is the weakest point of scorpio. To all Scorpio drivers I suggest that keep the brakes in top notch condition. I had to take the car to the dealer for brake adjustment within 1 month of purchase, and also during 1st service the brakes were tightened. It has been over 2 months since the 1st service and now I will again have to take it in for brakes. If there is technical problem with the brakes, I have not been told abt it yet by the dealer.

3) Tyres: The tyres that come with the scorpio are not good enough, I recommend better grip tyres. I am currently hunting for good tyres, so any suggestions will be appreciated.

4) Service was done by Sri Durga Auto, new delhi. It took them 6 hours!!! Next service I plan to go to Bhasin Motors.

5) Anti Rust spray WD-40. I use this spay on the door hinges, screws and where ever possible. I saw some vehicles (not so old) at the dealership and they screws and hinges were rusted. This spray used periodically like once in 2 months will stop the rust.

6) Fog Lamps: Get them it is a must! This will prevent you from driving on high beam + it will give you a wider view during night. When you are sitting at a elevated position that rest of the people on the road it helps.

MY car has now done 8000+ km, it will be going in for the second service.

I do still recommend the Scorpio, the driving experience is enjoyable.
