I took the delivery of Swift - Pratham by Mar'2006 . The car was delivered a week delayed, I was happy with the package though. I didn't feel the first service was good with Pratham, then I moved to Mondavi motors, it was better.
Later I found the level of service slowly reducing in Mondavi and I need to visit two or three times to fix a problem either it is repeat one or the spares are not available . So I decided to come back to Pratham service after my 35K run.
Here is my consolidated service exp with Maruti dealers .
Problem #1) Rattling – started getting it from 10K onwards: Neither of them could resolve it . As I understood later that’s manufacturing defect. I have to live with that.
Problem #2) Frequent replacement of rear wheel bearing – Started around 20 K: Mondavi changed it once and I have changed the bearing twice with Mondavi and Pratham changed it once.
Problem #3) Tyre worn out: Then I found the tyres were not worn out properly. I see more wear-tear inside than outside in 30 K. I felt some problem with Axle. I decided not to change tyres, without knowing the correct reason and loose that new tyres too. My mechanic, who was taking care of my previous Maruti cars, confirmed it is axle problem.
I approached Pratham. I was told that there is a pend in the axle and they would change those parts, they asked me to pay 7, 500/- to change the complete rear axle. I told them that I would talk to Maruti customer service, Delhi. I didn’t understand why I should pay when I am in extended warranty!
Then after two hours, I got the call from them and said their manager approved to change the part, which would cost them 2750/- . Why the hell the manager should approve this when the car is in warranty . also I was wondering when it was me to pay, I need to pay 7500/- and when they change it is almost of the price the quoted me .
Anyway I don’t want to get into the details as I want to fix the problem before warranty goes off.
Later I understood from my friend, that the problems with rear wheel bearings(#2) and the tyres worn out(#3) because of this rear axle.!
Problem #4) Jerk when I move in 2nd gear – started around 35 K: This problem was not resolved either of them, till yesterday… one person told that that’s because on initiator and one person told that I have to change clutch as I crossed 51 k. I decided not to change either of them until I am satisfied with the solution.
Problem #5) Jerk started coming when the car is in idle condition: The jerk started coming when the car is in idle. that shows some mismatch is tuning or power drop …
Last week I decided to visit my old mechanic, who has almost 20 years exp in this field and he provide services only to the limited customers. I asked him to drive the car and find out the faults. He drove just 5 KM and his updates were.
1) Clutch can be used for another 5 K, though it is not in good condition, it was not the problem for jerk!
2) He changed petrol filter and spark plugs. Do you believe that those spark plugs were dirty and I think never ever cleaned in any of the services. It was complete black and so much rust was over them.
3) He checked the rear brakes. to my wonder, that was not opened or cleaned since the production. That much dirt inside and the brake lining is completely gone. That was not available in Essar(who is claiming that he is the authorized MGP distributor!) . He just cleaned the old one and asked me to change it in two weeks.
4) As it is due to 55k service, I asked him to change oil(Magnetic oil), Oil filter and air filter(usual in all services).
Totally I spent around Rs. 2500 for spares and Rs 500 to his service. You don’t believe it the car is so smooth and I don’t have jerk in the car now .
That raises couple of questions to me.
If the defect can’t be identified in first or second attempt, then do these dealers have skilled professionals with them?
Do we need to go to authorized services for just water service and oil top up Is it worth of going for extended warranty?
Should we need to go with these experienced mechanics after three free services?
If it continues then definitely Maruti will loose its place at least in 5 to 10 years time to Honda or Toyota.
You know, I love my Red buddy, despite all these issues.!:)
PS: I pointed only the major issues . there were few minor, which I didn't mention here!
- Thank You! We appreciate your effort.
