Sony Cybershot DSC H1 Reviews

Is it a plane...No its Superman!
May 24, 2005 01:57 PM 2238 Views

When you first see the Sony Cybershot DSC T-1, your first impression is that it is a cigarette case of a compact masquerading as a digital camera. It is so slim and sleek that, with its silver finish it resembles a cigarette case more than a camera. Add to it the fact that it has a special lens which does not protrude out even for shooting images, though the camera has a 3x optical zoom, and the effect is enhanced.

The camera offers everything that a 5.1 mega-pixel camera does these days, including excellent image quality, red-eye reduction, multiple modes, video shooting capability and so on. Pictures can be transferred to a computer using the base provided by Sony, which is also used for re-charging the battery.

The T1 has a lens cover, which slides away to reveal the lens, and simultaneously switches on the camera. Covering the lens also switches the camera off. In the newer T3, the lens cover has been replaced by an electrically operated cover, making the camera even thinner!

One of the problems with the camera is that it is so small that it may easily slip out of your hands. Another nuisance is that it only accepts the Sony Memory Stick format for storing images, and this is much more expensive than the SD cards which are freely available in the market. Even though Sony has priced this product at nearly Rs 40,000, you can get it from the gray market for nearly half that price (which is incidentally what it also costs abroad, especially since the advent of the newer T3).

Good one at affordable price
May 22, 2005 12:19 PM 3537 Views

I brought one for my frnd in India. I was not interested initially when he asked for Sony. Some how I was thinking Sony is not good in the digital camera. And other thing Sony is quite expensive compared to other brands.

But he insisted me to buy only that. Then I decided to check the price online. I could not believe the price. It was 259.95$ at circuit city. I could not believe as I was not expecting Sony 5 Mega pixel camera only for 260$????? Man, Nikon cost the same. Well I am not saying Nikon is bad.

As staples was very near to our motel, I decided to buy it . And before that, I wanted to see its size and weight. I visited staples, staples did not had demo piece. Since, I had not choice but to buy it I asked the staple guy to check its price.

When he checked the price, I could not believe it!!!! It was just 199.50$, a 5 mega pixel, Sony camera at 199.50$. I did not say any word and just brought it. Guys, incase if you are thinking of buying it, go to staples, they have damn cheap price. They also gave me digital photography startup kit which costs 50$!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One of my other frnd brought Nikon Coolpix 5600 for 250$ from circuit city a month back. We compared its feature with Sony Cybershot. Sony was the best. Here are some comparisons.

  1. Color contrast cyber shot was very good compared to Nikon Coolpix

  2. Flash is quite good compared to Nikon, where cyber picked up right colors compared to Nikon. Also, when Nikon uses flash, it generates too much of light, which hurts the eye. Cyber was good it generates only as much as needed.

  3. Cyber does not use AA battery where as Nikon uses it. But the battery life of Nikon is not good. If you use flash and if you use AA cells, it captures the picture and will switch off immediately. It is kind of scary.

  4. Battery life of Cyber is very good. I was able to take more than 50 pictures and 5 big videos when I charged it first time only for an hour.

  5. Cyber sound clarity is very good in movies

  6. Stores movies in MPEG format compared to Nikon, which stores in Quick movie format. Which I hate…..

  7. Startup time of Cyber is very less.

  8. Cyber is less expensive, affordable.

  9. Compact. But I did not like its shape, I loved Nikon's shape. Some how I feel cybershot looks outdated.

  10. Cyber is very good at red eye reduction (not compared with Nikon)

  11. Viewfinder is very good, but Nikon's is equally good.

  12. User friendly and same with Nikon

  13. Auto focus is quick and good compared to Nikon

After the price and feature comparison, I decided to buy one for me too :)

Magic Moments with Sony DSC W1
Apr 08, 2005 11:40 AM 4127 Views

I was looking for a small, compact, handy digital camera. Being an ametuer photographer, I did not want a high end camera with all those confusing controls :-).

I considered Canon and Sony as the candidates and finally settled down with this small beauty called Sony DSC W1.

This is a wonderful camera for an amateur like me. The features which attracted me the most were the placement of the controls on the back of the camera and the extra large LCD for easy viewing of your target. The Carl Zeiss lens with 5.1 Mega Pixel of resolution given crisp images comparable to the professional ones.

The back panel of the camera is designed so well that you can operate all the controls with your right hand thumb only while your right hand index finger can take care of the shutter. Thus, this camera can be operated with your right hand only. The large LCD next to all the controls provides enough details of the image. The menu system is very easy to operate and navigate.

The image quality is excellent. The only problem which I found in the camera is with Red Eye reduction. The Red Eye reduction is not so effective in night time flash photography. However, the video quality is not that great. This is acceptable as this is not a video camera after all.

The next good thing I liked about this camera is the ability to attach external tele-photo and wide angle lenses. Although, I do not have these lenses at this moment, bu I strongly feel, it will definitely add more fun in taking pictures using this camera.

The response time of the camera is very low, which means you are very unlikely to miss any precious moments. Switch on the power and the camera is ready to take pictures in around 2 sec. The battery life is very good. I don't have to worry about carrying extra batteries if going for a day long outing. Just recharge one set of batteries fully, keep enough memory and here you go.

The image download is pretty fast with the USB connectivity. However, the Picture Package software bundled with the camera is not so good. It is a very basic Image editing software. This has lot of scope for improvement.

I would recommend this camera for beginners, for those who are shifting from a point and shoot kind of film cameras or the amateur photographers who like to play with the images...

Rises to expectations

Just recently bought the DSC W1. On the whole, a really good camera. 5.1 megapixel, a huge 2.5 inch LCD display, Carl Zeiss Vario Tessar lens (in case you dont know what this means, it's a high definition lens for extra clarity), a host of manual features and quite a good flash. It shoots amazing clear macro pictures and has got good red-eye correction.

One thing that is excellent here is its AF illuminator. Even it's pitch dark, low light focussing on any object is not a problem, however far the object might be. Though it says is has an Image stabilizer, it is not too effective, especially for manual shots. Be warned, if you are keen on manual shots all the time (especially when you have chosen a large shutter time), be ready to carry around a tripod, otherwise everything will be hazy.

Even though it is categorzied under Point-and-Shoot, it is more than that, especially because of its manual features, which are quite good, from White Balance, Aperture, Shutter speed, ISO settings and loads of others.

Oh yes, and it's movie mode is amazing !!! Even though it might be a bit heavy on space, it's no doubt one of the best in market right now !

One thing to be kept in mind, do buy a minimum 256MB memory card while purchasing the camery. A 128MB card will do for one night only (without any videos) at the highest resolution.

On the whole, a seeriousssllllyyy good buy !! (Unless ofcourse, you have more money to spend :)

Sony P-8: Value for your money
Jan 11, 2005 07:38 PM 2955 Views

When I wanted to purchase a digital camera, I was concerned about the quality & reliability. Sony was the obvious choice when it came to these. There are scores of cameras in the market and it is very difficult to choose one that fits your pocket and purse.

I bought a Sony Cybershot P-8 in March 2004 and till date I have never regretted the decision. I have shot more than 5000 pictures and 100 video clips with it.

It comes with a CCD sensor, 3X zoom lens with 3.2X digital zoom, InfoLithium battery, 1.5 inch LCD monitor, 3.2 Mega Pixels picture size, 16 MB memory stick, cables for USB port, TV port, a charger, a carry strap, and has a firm body for good grip in anyone's hand and the whole thing costs around 13,000 Rs.

I purchased a 64 MB stick in addition for 2000 Rs. The battery lasts for 3 hours in view mode. It has a in built flash and a timer for automatic click. There are two video sizes that saves video clips with sound as mpeg files and 5 image sizes. The picture quality is superb. Other options include Black & white, Solarize, Sepia and negative art.

For the price you pay, is more than the worth you expect.

Dec 29, 2004 04:43 PM 5232 Views

With its small size and quick reaction time, the Sony DSCP93 digital camera will be your constant photographic companion. You''ll pick up amazing detail with its 5.1-megapixel CCD--and produce poster-sized prints.

The affordable, 5-megapixel DSCP93 offers point-and-shoot simplicity with a variety of features normally found in higher-end models.

It features a 3x optical zoom, 9-shot burst mode, high-resolution 1.5-inch LCD screen for reviewing shots, A/V connection to view images on your TV, and a high-resolution movie mode that''s limited only by your Memory Stick''s capacity.

For a step up in price, check out the Sony DSCP100 brings a high-quality Carl Zeiss lens, compatibility with Sony''s Cybershot Station, and even more compact size to the table.

Optics and Resolution: The 1/1.8-inch Super HAD (Hole Accumulation Diode) CCD allows more light to pass to each pixel, increasing sensitivity and reducing noise, and provides a 5.1-megapixel effective resolution (2592 x 1944). The Real Imaging Processor offers greater clarity and picture quality as well as improved response time and battery life and decreased shutter lag.

The DSCP93 has a 3x optical zoom lens that''s combined with a smooth 2x digital zoom for a 6x total. Movie Mode Capture video with audio at 30 frames per second (fps) at VGA size 640 x 480; the included 32 MB memory card will store 87 seconds of vide at this setting. Movie length is only limited by the amount of storage you have on hand.

The Video Mail mode captures a smaller movie (160 x 112 pixels) that''s more suitable to sending to friends and family via e-mail. More Features In addition to optics, the DSCP93 offers the following additional features to the DSCP73: The 1.5-inch LCD monitor has a 123K-pixel resolution--double that of the DSCP73--enabling you to review fine details in your captured images.

9 Shot Burst Mode: Capture up to 9 shots (fine) or 15 shots (standard) at 1.2 frames/sec. even at 5 MP resolution. Perfect for high speed subjects or fast moving action such as sports. (The DSCP73 has only a 4-shot burst mode.)

-Real Imaging Processor: The innovative Real Imaging Processor in the DSC-P93 not only improves picture quality and clarity but also improves camera response time, decreases shutter lag and improves battery stamina.

-Selectable Focus Mode: Monitoring AF (Auto Focus) helps you anticipate the action by focusing even before you press the shutter release. Conversion Lens Compatible: Increase your shooting options by adding either telephoto lenses to increase your optical zoom, or wide-angle lenses to increase the width of your field of view.

You can even add filters for special effects. 5 Area Multi-Point Auto Focus: By evaluating 5 separate focus areas of the frame, SonyÕs Multi-Point AF system can intelligently focus on the subject and avoid mistakenly focusing on the background.

-AF (Auto Focus) Illuminator: Briefly illuminating the subject, in low--or no--light conditions, the AF Illuminator helps establish a positive focus lock.

-Multi-Pattern Measuring: Independently light-metering 49 points of the frame, Multi-Pattern Measuring establishes the optimum exposure, even when highlight and shadow isnÕt centered in the frame.

-Multi-Burst Mode: Captures 16 320 x 240 frames as part of a single 1280 x 960 image which plays back sequentially in the camera (selectable 1/7.5, 1/15, 1/30 second).

-Manual Exposure Mode: Manual Exposure Mode provides extended control with 46-step adjustable Shutter speed (30 Ð 1/1000 sec.), and 2-step Aperture control.

-Scene Selection Mode: With 6 Scene Modes, parameters can be matched to the shooting conditions. Choose from one of the following: Twilight, Twilight Portrait, Landscape, Soft Snap, Candle, or Beach.

-Slow Shutter Noise Reduction: During long exposures, Slow Shutter NR captures the scene, and then the CCD noise pattern with a dark frame exposure. By subtracting the two, even long exposures can be clear. Pre-Flash Metering: With a momentary pre-flash, the camera illuminates the subject and sets exposure through the lens for accurate flash metering.

Adjustable flash level and red-eye reduction ensure great flash shots.

Direct Printing The Cybershot DSCP93 offers PictBridge functionality, which enables you to transfer pictures from your digital camera to a compatible printer--such as the Sony PictureStation DPP-EX50--without a PC or image-editing software.

Images can be viewed and selected for printing right on the camera''s LCD, with menus for print quantity, date, and index print.

Storage and Transfer Images are stored on Memory Sticks, and the Cybershot DSCP93 is compatible with Memory Stick Pro media--for storage up to 1 gigabyte. The included 32 MB Memory Stick will store 12 Fine and 23 Standard 5.1-megapixel images.

The DSCP93 transfers images to PCs and Macs via a speedy USB 2.0 connection (which is backward compatible with USB 1.1 ports). Power and Size The camera is powered by two rechargeable NiMH AA-sized batteries (2100 mAh).

The included adapter/charger provides power while you transfer images from the camera to your PC. It measures 4.63 x 2.13 x 1.38 inches (W x H x D) and weighs 7 ounces without Memory Stick or batteries. What''s in the Box This package contains the Sony DSCP93 digital camera, 32 MB Memory Stick, two AA-size NiMH rechargeable batteries (NH-AA-DA), battery charger (BC-CS2), A/V and USB cables, wrist strap, and CD-ROM with photo editing software.

Sony Photo Vault: The optional Sony Photo Vault mini CD burner eliminates worry about running out of space on your Memory Stick when travelling. It burns images to mini CD-R''s without a PC interface--just connect your camera using a USB cable.

The Photo Vault also has a Memory Stick slot (compatible with Memory Stick Pro and Duo) and features a built-in photo album capability to display photos on a television screen using a television's standard AV input.

Sony Cybershot DSC-W1

Sony Cybershot DSC-W1.........what can I say. It is certainly the best digital camera I have come across till now. I had to buy this camera because I lost my old Olympus.....and boy, I sure don't regret losing it.

This beauty comes with a 2.5 inch extra large lcd screen, Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar lens , 3x optical zoom, 5.1 megapixels....what more can I say.

The fully packed Sony Cybershot DSC-W1 is housed in a very compact, stylish and durable metal body about the size of a deck of playing cards.

It is powered by two AA rechargeable shots which by experience last upto 500 shots.

The Cyber-shot W1 is the perfect camera for photographers who are just beginning to explore the wonders of imaging.

You can select 5 modes of picture quality - VGA, 1 Megapixel, 3 Megapixel, 3:2 Mode, and 5 Megapixels. It has 6 different languages including English.

It has a mpeg movie mode which has 3 modes of movie quality - 640(Fine) , 640(Standard) , and 160. The length of the video is only limited by the space on your memory card.

There are 7 other photo modes-Twilight, Twilight Portrait, Landscape, Soft Snap, Candle, or Beach.

These modes can be adjusted through a small dial located at the top of the camera along with the power button and shutter release.

The ports are on the sides and include an easy USB connect port, memory stick port , dc in and av out ports.

The Sony Cybershot DSC-W1 is sold at under $400 along with a free 32 mb memorystick pro and a battery charger.

Overall this camera is a great deal.

The best digital camera for the amatures!!!
Nov 30, 2004 06:18 PM 3231 Views

I love this camera. It takes excellent quality pictures, it is very easy to use, and it is so quick too: about 1 second to load when you turn it on!!

The camera comes with re-chargeable batteries and a charger, which gives it more life and lets you take more videos/pictures, as it increases the memory.

I found it very easy to set up and, once I had gone through the instructions leaflet and tried a few things out, I found it easy to use too. -

Instruction leaflet: very detailed and well explained. -

Battery life: On the condition that you use the rechargeable batteries, supplied with the camera, here is an idea on the battery life:

  • Shooting images under average conditions: 3.1 Megapixel pictures or VGA movies: between 320 and 540 (160 to 270 minutes battery life), depending on whether the LCD screen is left on or off.

  • Playing back images: approximately 6000 (300 minutes)

  • Shooting movies: between 160 and 210 minutes, depending on whether the LCD screen is left on or off. - Memory stick: 16MB supplied; I recommend that you buy a memory stick of higher capacity (I got a 128 MB), to make the most of your camera and be able to use it as you wish.

This will depend on your needs obviously but the bigger the memory stick, the more images and movies you?ll be able to take before having to delete.

Also by having an extra memory stick, you can always keep the 16MB with you in case you?re out and about and the bigger one gets full a bit too soon!! -

Features: * 3.2 effective Megapixel * Smart Zoom (up to 3.2x ? not fantastic but does the job for me)

  • Different flash modes (auto, off, forced, slow syncro, red eyes reduction)

  • Self timer

  • Viewing images:

# Images can be viewed on the LCD screen, either individually, or within an index of 3 or 9 pictures. When viewing the images, you can change its settings, its size, or even delete or protect it (to stop it from being deleted by accident)

# They can also be viewed on your TV screen with the supplied A/V cable

# Finally you can upload them easily and in a few seconds to your PC, either through the provided software, or through software of your choice. When you plug your camera into your PC through the supplied USB cable, your computer will automatically detect it and will offer you to save the contents to a folder of your choice. Couldn?t be easier.

  • Folders: within the camera, you can create sub-folders where you wish to save your pictures/movies as you go, so they are already organised before you even upload them to your PC.

  • Multi-burst mode: to record 16 frames in a row

  • Shooting still images with audio file: you can add sound for up to 40 seconds to a simple picture.

  • Special effects: solarise (like an illustration with clearly delineated bright and dark conditions), black and white, sepia (makes the picture look like an old photograph) and negative art

  • MPEG movie with audio, which you can edit and cut to the scenes you want. The software provided is also very easy of use and lets you edit your pictures and movies, make the changes of your choice and create a photo album.

The only thing that is not so good is the flash, which is very bright and therefore makes the subject blink more often than not when you take the picture (especially when taking pictures of children). Generally a good camera to have, I recommend it.

Cybershot w1 may be better
Oct 28, 2004 04:39 PM 3009 Views

Cybershot dsc p-100 is a smart little camera, capable of a wide variety of functions and gives good results even in inexperienced hands. it costs around Rs 20.000/-. it has a maximum resolution of 5.1 Mp, 3x optical and 6x digital zoom. it has multiple point autofocus, various seen modes, macro recording from 10cms and unlimited video recording capability, dependinent only on memory sick size. it is small and easily fits into the pocket. I had gone to buy this camera for a friend recently, having earlier purchased p92 and p93 for different people. but at the shop, I found w1. it had all the features of p 100 and in addition had a wide colour LCD. it was 6 cms ( p 100 has only 1.8'')and nearly the entire back of the camera was occupied by it. it was as good as that of my camcorder and was very good for the preview. even, much costlier cameras like dsc f717 which I have have smaller displays. in addition, this camera was cheaper to p100. I definitely think that it is a better buy.

Sony Cybershot 120
Sep 20, 2004 09:39 PM 3635 Views

The Sony Cybershot P120 is identical - exactly identical if you'd like :>) - to the Sony Cybershot P100 (reviewed in the same section on Mouthshut) bar the following differences:

  • Sony claims its a limited edition digital camera

  • It is black in colour - consequently it looks really good

  • It comes with an additional battery

  • It comes with a carrying case

The rest of the technical features remain the same as the P100. The 'commercial feature' obviously increases by about 25 %.

So unless you looove black, shoot for extended periods of time needing extra battery power and don't mind spending ~ 25 % more than the P100, give this a miss and settle for the P100.

For ease, I have included my own earlier review of the P100.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Sony Cybershot P100 is an excellent point and shoot digital camera.

Here are a few points for the technically inclined:

It is a 5 megapixel (MP) camera with 3 X optical and 6 X digital zoom. Most importantly it has a Carl Zeiss lens which results in excellent picture clarity. It has 9 different scene modes with a 5 area multipoint smart autofocusing system. It lets you shoots movies at either 30 fps or 16 fps depending on the memory with sound. The 30 fps requires a Memory Stick Pro while the length of the movie is dictated by the memory size only. For a list of the major features see below.

For the others:

The P100 is an excellent camera and is an ideal buy for the first time digital camera user or for that matter, even for the first time camera buyer. It is very easy to use, offers excellent top-of-the-line features and clicks great photos. It looks ver sleek, is easy to handle and has a nice large 1.8 inch LCD panel. The battery lasts pretty long, nearly 3 hours and comes with a charger. The USB cable and the software required for downloading to a PC is also provided. The 5 MP is really not required for everyday shooting and I'd suggest you set it to 1 MP for normal photos ( 1 MP is enough for a 6 x 4 / 7x 5 digital printout). Also keep in mind the higher you set your MP, your image size will be larger and hence occupy more memory.

It is a tad expensive ranging from Rs 16000 to Rs 22000 (these are based on online retailer prices such as amazon.co.uk etc). But I'd still say its a good one time investment. It is NOT for long distance shots since the zoom is pretty limited. That said it gets you great shots which covers everyday photography. Those interested in shooting wildlife, nature scenes in great detail would do better to consider a camera with more zoom capabilities.

I found shooting with this camera very easy, a lot of options, complete freedom to manually override settings and most importantly it was thoroughly enjoyable.

Can't get much better than this!
May 28, 2001 05:29 AM 3802 Views

I'm a non-believer with digital camera before I got this camera. When my daughter was born last year, I vow to take pictures of her every single day. Which I did follow though to my promise, except it was too much for me to drop off the film and wait for it to come back. I did some reasearch online and decide to find a camera that works more like a 35mm slr like I'm used shooting with in my studio. Finally I brought this camera and 2 64mb memorie sticks and a extra battery. After I start shooting with it, I thought I'll never use another 35mm film camera again. It was so easy to use, very similar to the newer style of film based camera. It can be complete manually or automatic. Since it has a 62mm filter ring, it was easy to fit various filters or cokin system on there to have color correction or other special effects. I've used that camera for freelance work and also for shooting wedding photography. The only complaint I have is that I don't like the auto-focus they have on the camera. It takes too long and don't work that well. But this makes a great studio camera as well as for novice to learn how to use.

One of it's best option is you could choose to have the image saved as tiff or jpeg on the camera, and you could choose 4 different grades of quality for the image. This allows you to have range from 15 photos to 800 photos on a 64mb memory stick. I use tiff format to shoot because it gives you uncompress format that is great for printing.

After owning this camera for nearly a year now, there was times I thought about upgrading my camera. But every time I went down to do research on other cameras, I can not find any of them that I like more than this. I got this whole outfit with 2 extra memories stick and a extra batteries for only 1300 USD. The only 2 cameras out there I find can compare to this camera is the Olympus E10 and Nikon D1. Except they are about 2 or 3 times the price of this Sony camera.

For this camera, you have the option using the viewfinder or using the LCD screen. You could also use it's remote to take family photo or self-portrait. Camera very much feel like a 35mm slr camera, so if you are familiar with one of those, you'll have no problem with this camera.

Right now I'm researching about the filter I can put in front of this camera that would shoot digital infrared photography.

It's a year old now, so I'm sure there will be better ones that will come out in the near future, but we can say that for almost anything. So far the pro-unit from Sony and the highest grade from Sony. The newer CDR digital camera from Sony has a lot of problem and could not even compare to this one.
