I have been using this camera since last 5 years and it gives me stunning pictures.

The H50 is a 9.1 MP camera with a Vario Sonnar lens. The 3" screen is very good. Screen can be seen with very good clarity even in bright light.

The controls are placed at the right hand side, and if one has ever used a digital camera before, these features are very user friendly. The clicker is neatly located to suit the index finger use.

The 15x optical zoom holds it;s own ground at max zoom. Pictures taken have amazing clarity.

Sony Cybershot W810 is the first digital camera which my family owned. What I liked about it is that it is very simple to use. My mother had never clicked pictures on a camera in her entire life. However, with Sony Cybershot W810 even she has begun to click pictures that too effortlessly. I think this speaks volumes about the product. So the product gets full marks for being user friendly.

As regards the quality of images is concerned the product has 20.1 mega pixels camera. Personally I opine that one should not run behind mega pixels but see the picture quality. The picture quality too is very good.

The camera has got timer. It also has panaromic and movie mode. It is bit difficult to click pictures in panaromic mode because you have to move the camera very slowly to get a panaromic view. I have seen that my friend's camera another model of Sony Cybershot is quite user friendly when it comes to clicking pictures in panaromic mode. As regards the movie mode is concerned the videos are of average quality. However you can not expect much in this price range when it comes to videos.

The camera has auto face recognition and auto night mode selection features. The product is good. This is one purchase you will not repent buying.

Digital Cameras – Squeezed Out

Compact Digital Cameras have reached a plateau in their existence, and perhaps it is only downhill from now. Picture quality has remained mostly the same over the past 3-4 years, and prices have not reduced. Cell phone cameras are becoming more and more ubiquitous, and even the general populace are buying digital SLR’s for use on holidays. In such cases, is there any point reviewing a superzoom camera like the Sony HX9V?

In a word. Yes.

While compact digital cameras may be squeezed out for general purpose use or professional shots, they still have a very important niche that phone cams and digital SLR’s are not particularly suited for, and that is travel photography. This is where a camera like the Sony HX9V(and it’s successors like the HX20, HX50, WX350 etc.) shine

Still, why buy a HX9V for travel? Well, let’s look at the reasons below:

Size

If you have every tried lugging around a SLR plus lenses for your holiday, whether it be the beach, mountains, or just a quick weekend tour, you realize that the size and weight make it impractical to carry around. Not to mention, the size makes it difficult for you to get quick shots of people or locations. Most people freeze up and stiffen when they see an SLR, which makes it difficult to get natural photos.

The HX9V is a small camera. Think of it as the size of an iPhone 5 with 4 times the thickness. While it will not fit in a pair of jeans, it can be carried around discreetly and whipped out quite fast.

Controls

A phone camera might be easy for some to use, but personally, I find the controls of the HX9V to be just the right blend of buttons and dials. A phone relies on a touch screen interface, which works well. But for fast speed, the Sony’s mode dial cannot be matched. Also, zooming can be more easily controlled with the zoom dial than a touchscreen. The HX9V allows you to easily use the controls whether you are a novice or an expert.

Zoom Lens Range

Most phone cameras have digital, not optical zoom. Which means that while they capture wide shots effectively, they cannot effectively zoom into a subject. SLR’s have lots of zoom, but for that you need to mostly change lenses, which would cause you to miss the shot. And if you do buy an 18-200mm zoom lens, which comes closest to matching the zoom of the HX9V, you will spend an additional R.s 20, 000 – 30, 000 just for the zoom lens.

The sony has a 24mm wide angle, which means it can capture a huge amount of landscape details. It is also very useful if you are in a small room and want to capture a group of people. The whole please shuffle and adjust need is reduced. It also has a 16X zoom which means you can zoom into the trees and shoot those far off birds / wildlife. Now some may argue. But I do not need so much zoom 90% of the time. True, but isn’t it great to have it available for the 10% of the time you need it?

Intelligent Auto Mode

Even people who buy SLR’s mostly leave it on automatic mode and fire away during holiday shots. After all, your subjects would get increasingly frustrated as you change every microcosmic detail of aperture, white balance, ISO etc.  Just to get a shot. What we want are good looking pictures easily.

The Sony’s Intelligent Auto Plus mode is one of the best I have used. It knows exactly what scene mode, white balance, exposure setting and ISO to be used depending on the photo. It also goes into macro or close up mode automatically. For more than 90% of my shots I just leave the camera in this mode and shoot. It is very effective.

Panorama

Sure, phone cameras can do effective panoramas these days, but the HX9V, for me, has the best panoramic mode available. And on holidays a wide panorama shot is great fun, especially of wide picturesque landscapes. You just hold the shutter button, release and move the camera in the direction you want the panorama. Over 75% of the time it take an excellent panorama. You can have regular(180 degrees) or wide(270 degrees) view panoramas taken.

HD Video with Stabilization

The Sony has one of the best video modes in the camera industry. It shoots full 1080p with stereo audio. Granted, the mic is pretty poor, especially in windy conditions, but the video quality is excellent, especially seen on the HD tv. It also has a smart stabilisation mode which ensures that the camera remains steady if you are walking and moving. But don’t expect it to save the video, especially if you are running or moving in a bouncy vehicle.

Battery

One main problem I have with using a phone while travelling is that you are constantly worried when the battery runs out. And using the camera on the phone reduces battery life dramatically, since the LCD needs to be on continuously. Instead, carrying a compact separate camera means you do not have to worry about your phone. The HX9V delivers around 300 photos on one charge, which is sufficient for a day of shooting if you choose carefully.

*So, the HX9V seems like the prefect camera, right? Nope. It still has some faults.

Average Picture Quality compared to a DSLR*

The Sony is still a compact camera with a small sensor. So while it performs better than phone cameras, it cannot deliver the ultimate level of sharpness and detail that a digital SLR can. This is especially true in night time shots, where the HX9V’s pictures become grainy, while and SLR’s might still retain sharpness. Also, the HX9V compresses photos a lot for its 16 MP sensor. I feel it could have delivered much better quality if you could control the compression, but the user has not choice in the matter.

Not enough Manual Control

Enthusiasts should look elsewhere. The HX9V is primarily a camera for families and people who want fully automatic shooting. While it has 2 manual modes, they do not offer too much adjustment in shooting options.

Competition: There are a lot of other Compact Zoom cameras like the Nikon S9700, Canon SX260, Panasonic TZ series etc. They offer comparable performance and price to the HX9V.

For people who want good quality with small size, mirrorless cameras like the Nikon J1, Olympus PL series are just a few thousand more.

Verdict: At Rs. 16, 000 the HX9V(now replaced by the HX20, HX50, WX350) does everything you ask for in a travel camera. Until camera phones have as good quality in a small size, there will still be a market for such compact cameras.

Stunning Clarity

Features:

•9.1 Mega Pixels with Super HAD CCD

•Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar Lens with 15x Optical Zoom

•Large 3.0" Clear Photo LCD

•BIONZ Image Processing Engine

•Double “Anti-blur” Solution: Super SteadyShot

•Face Detection Technology I am using this camera  and I am very happy with its performance. It has become an important part of my life as it allowed me to take some wonderful pictures, which I can watch and cherish them. It is a 9.1 Megapixel camera

It is compact and stylish. Handling this camera is hassle free. When you capture image at low light or at night it gives stunning clarity, and to my surprise the photos are crisp and not blurred. The self timer mode is also very nice and accurate. It helps to click photos where a lot of adjustment is required prior to clicking the photos. Powerful 15x optical zoom lens lets you pick up fine detail from a distance.  You’ll be able to capture extremely distant object with optical clarity.

You can record high-quality, sharp and vibrant videos in HD resolution with this camera. Also,  the recorded videos can be watched and uploaded directly. You can record videos in 1280 x 720p resolution at 30fps.

It  has Sweep panorama mode, image mode, video mode. These option can be selected by sliding the switch provided on the right hand corner of the camera. It is very easy to use. It has Intelligent mode which automatically adjust the camera setting to get a brilliant and bright image of the picture. The face detection mode is also accurate. The best feature is the smile detection where the camera detects the smile and the photo gets clicked automatically. It uses Optical Image Stabilization to create noise free and rich images. So even if the camera is in motion the photos will be clear.

After using all the features and functions of this camera, I would recommend it to people who take keen interest in photography…

Poor Products & Service from Sony
May 16, 2014 05:37 PM 3094 Views

Having bought Sony DSC-WX50 Cyber Shot at around INR12K exactly a year back, I am regretting it now.  I should have realised the quality of Sony products when the laptop I have purchased developed keyboard problems within one month which was replaced by the company.

Now the camera is not charging and after 5 trips to the service centre in Hyderabad near paradise, I was told to but charger, which I did and the camera is still not working. They neither have testing equipment nor spares.

They do not have any idea of their own accessory rates. They told the charger rate is somewhere around Rs.2, 300-2, 500, then Rs.1, 500 during second visit and finally charged Rs.835/-. Well their paperwork is far superior. You have to sign at least 3 documents and wait 4 days to receive the accessory.

The issue is my camera still doesn't work and I believe that I can only use it to ward off evil spirits by hanging in front of my house.

SONY CYBER SHOT DSC-H50 USER REVIEW
Sep 08, 2013 04:05 PM 4613 Views

The Sony H50 offers a sensor resolution of nine megapixels along with a Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar branded 15x optical zoom lens that includes Super Steady Shot optical image stabilization. Other H50 features include ISO sensitivity from ISO 80 to 3, 200, a not-so-generous 15MB of internal memory, and a large 3.0", tilting LCD display with 230, 000 pixels.

The Sony DSC-H50 uses contrast detection auto-focusing, with face detection, nine focusing points, and an AF assist lamp to help out in difficult lighting conditions. Exposures are determined with multi-pattern metering by default, and both center-weighted or spot metering modes are also on offer. As well as the internal memory, a Memory Stick Duo slot(compatible with PRO Duo cards as well) lets you expand capacity to meet your needs. Power for the H50 is provided by a proprietary NP-BG1 lithium-ion rechargeable battery.

The Sony Cyber-shot H50 has a suggested retail price of US$400, but can be found for quite a bit less via the shopping links above right or below.

Value for money and it has it all
Sep 05, 2013 06:06 PM 10025 Views

This ongoing trend has somehow got into me and that's what made me think of buying a camera. I have discovered and unknown passion for photography which was pointed out by few of my colleagues recently. Buying a DSLR would have been very difficult considering the budget as a constraint. So I thought to buy something which would fit my budget.

After doing some research I came across Sony cyber-shot series. Personally I liked the DSC 320 series which one of my friends owned and the look and feel too was great. It was easy to handle too, but my friend suggested me to buy dsc710 and then I myself researched on it reading few reviews from certified buyers on various sites.

Now I own one and till now the feeling is great and it's 16.1 Mp makes my photography even more amazing.

Specifications:

16.1 Megapixel Camera

5x Optical Zoom and 4x Digital Zoom

Full HD Recording

Li-ion Rechargeable Battery

2 year Sony India Warranty and Free Transit Insurance.

Few distinguishable features I would comment on are-----------------

It's got everything for the price it's being sold for.

The 360 degree sweep panorama which many of the cameras in this range don't have.

On zooming HD videos are clear too.

Excellent pics even on optical zooming it to 5x.

Good image sensor and depicts true color.

Picture Quality: As I mentioned earlier, it has good image sensor and gives true color and the overall quality acheived by this 16.1 Mp is awesome. I've acheived even more realness in the pictures and minute details are also visible. Even on zooming I find the pics arent distored nor blurred.

Ease of Use: It was not a difficult job to get hold of the device as I have already operated on DSC320 which too was very simple and transparent. So switching from dsc320 to dsc710 wasn't a big deal for me. Although operating dsc320 was a bit challenging to me as I haven't used any camera till now. Clicking images through cell phone are much simple.

Battery life: Once its being charged, it depends on how continuous the camera is being used. I charged the battery full, and the following day I almost used it for an entire day with 25% of the battery still left. Considering the fact that I used it entire day, every single time clicking pics and putting it on and off it did a descent job I feel. Not much idea about battery life of other cameras but I feel this much battery life was descent enough especially using the flash every single time.

Value for Money: Now comes the point which is important for every user so that he can make a proper decision and I would simply say go for it! In this price range hardly any cameras can compete with this one. In a price range of 5500-6000 this one would be the best I feel so and on applying coupon codes or using credit card this would be a perfect deal.

A few cons:

Battery takes at least 2 hours to get fully charged, a way too much time consuming.

No pause button during recording, but doesn't make much of a difference as I have purchased this for photography and not video recording but somehow someday I would need the pause functionality I suppose.

One more suggestion from my side would be that the build quality isn't good and could have been better if worked properly on it.

Conclusion: A stealer of a product in the range that it comes for, and go for it blindly.

One last suggestion to all you photographer, it's really a good deal to buy this if your budget is 6000/- or below that.

Will soon be uploading my collection of pics taken from this one.

Thanks for reading people.

Well if you are buying this kind of camera, please look for the latest models as digital cameras are ever changing. So the moment you buy one you will know it will be old in few months. That is the status of any electronic device. So don't wait if you are planning to buy one.

Only thing you should take good note while you buy any such device is that it shouldn't be made in China. Even though it is from a reputed brand. I faced this issue in a hard way. My Sony DSC-W50 is made in Japan. Maybe that is why it is running fantastic. My Sony portable all in one audio system has gone bad within a year which was bought in the US and this was made in China. So simply don’t buy any Chinese manufactured stuff. They are of poor quality.

A below-average product of Sony
May 06, 2013 12:15 PM 9646 Views

The only unmatched specialty about Sony is the fact that they give a three year warranty on all their cameras. I previously had a 6MP DSC S series camera which was quite good in terms of picture quality. Even if I set the picture resolution to VGA which is the lowest, it gave excellent non-pixelated pictures. However it drained batteries heavily and the battery door was very weak that often it broke leading to an expenditure of at least 1200 Rs each time for a replacement door.

So coming to this camera, I like its compact size. It can fit into the smallest of pockets. There is not even a need to buy a camera pouch because it can slide into even the pockets of your jeans. As for the battery, it lasts very long. Even with flash, the battery last pretty much for as much as 300-400 high resolution pictures. We can even shoot videos for perhaps an hour before the battery runs out. One of the biggest issues with most Sony cameras used to be the fact that it could only accept a Memory Stick PRO Duo and no other memory card. But this one supports a variety of memory cards. The LCD size is pretty large (2.7") and covers most of the back side of the camera. Sony could have continued with their legacy of providing Carl-Zeiss lenses in their cameras. I realized a lot later that this camera only has a Sony lens. That is perhaps the reason why the picture quality is relatively poor. Usually Sony cameras are known for best images in low-light. But perhaps to beat their competition from other low-priced cameras, Sony thought of doing away with their standards. When a picture is taken and expanded, you can see tiny black dots all over a clear surface. For example even if you take the picture of a white wall, when the image is zoomed in, there are tiny dots. Low light images are definitely very poor. So in the end, you have no use of the 14 MPs of the camera. A 2-3 MP camera can pretty much do the work because you anyway cannot print poster size photos taken with this camera. As for the video, it is just a VGA camera. The videos shot with this camera are no better than those taken using a 5MP cellphone camera.

The Sweep Panorama feature is pretty useful when you have to click images over a vast expanse. You can set it to Sweep Panorama mode and then move the camera around so that a vast expanse gets captured in one single image. Although Sony claims you can turn around 360 degrees, I don't it is possible to shoot beyond 180-200 degree angle. But yet, this is a great feature if you have to click panoramic pictures. When you have to shoot a large group of people in a small room and you can't go back any further, this feature comes in handy.

One major concern I noticed with the camera is that you get a vibration alert on almost all scene selections. This is a manufacturing flaw in it because it is definitely not because you don't have a steady hand. Even if you set the timer on and place it on a hard surface, the vibration alert keeps flashing.

Overall, other than the fact that the camera has a good battery backup and it is compact, it is not at all good for professional photo-shoots nor for the quality conscious. If you just want to click some random pictures to keep as memorabilia, this camera would do. For that purpose even a cellphone camera would suffice. But for someone who specifically purchases a digital camera hoping to click high-resolution images, this camera is a big disappointment.

Of course you do have other normal features like tripod compatibility, different scene selections, red-eye reduction etc which are there in almost all cameras these days and I don't find those worth mentioning.

Impressive bridge camera by Sony.
Mar 26, 2013 08:11 PM 11140 Views

Well, its quiet surprising to see that, not many people here in mouthshut.com are writing any reviews about bridge camera's in India. May be it is because this segment is seeing tough competition and there are many websites dedicated to photography & review sites for photo equipments.

Anyways, here is my personal review for all those people like me who trust Mouthshut.com & look for reviews & opinions in it before buying anything thats going to matter them the most.

Let me brief about my photographic interest:

I'm not a professional photographer but I do posses a very keen interest in photography and cameras hence i've used many cameras so far. I have always been a DSLR fan but in recent times these bridge cameras have drawn my interest towards them as they come with huge optical zooms and full manual controls with impressive picture quality.

I'm a proud owner of Canon SX40 HS which is there with me since last 2 years. But the Sony's Cyber-shot DSC-HX200V(launched after I bought my camera) has highly impressed me. My friend bought it last year based on my recommendation and he is very happy with its excellent performance. I've been using this camera a lot & quiet extensively and every time it manages to impress me with its impressive results.

Since you can get endless technical reviews out there on various websites, here I wish to keep it simple & non technical for all kind of readers to understand.

Good things I found about Sony Cyber-shot HX200V:

  1. This 30X zoom camera helps you in taking pictures at long distance with crisp & sharp image quality, all thanks to its 18 megapixel image sensor and awesome optical image stabilization system.

  2. The colors of the picture look bright & vivid on its high resolution screen and it is equally eye pleasing when you upload it on computer.

  3. You would really enjoy using features like 360 degree sweep panorama & 3D panorama including GPS when you are touring various places on holidays.

  4. This camera is fast in clicking photos one after the other and has got a very good image processing capability.

  5. You can also use this camera for capturing videos in full HD resolution.

  6. The most important aspect of this camera is that it is easy to use and hassle free to handle.(various control buttons may feel little complicated at the beginning but it will get a lot easier with the increased learning curve).

  7. Performance wise its a very good camera that takes clear images & videos both indoor and outdoor. If you are able to use its vast features and utilize its full capacity then it is really a value for money product.

  8. Last but not the least and the best thing I liked, it is the only Bridge camera that comes with a manual zoom adjustment ring over the outer lens barrel. It really makes us feel like using a DSLR.(though it is only for zoom and not for focus).

Some negative aspects in my opinion:

  1. High price! n that is common with all good bridge cameras in the market. Though you can find some good alternatives at much cheaper price but nothing compared to this one.

  2. Image quality though good but it still lags somewhat behind it's competitor Canon SX40 hs & their latest Canon SX50 hs which are prices at even higher side. You can only find this image quality difference while printing the image.

  3. It is not for those who are looking for a pocket sized camera. It looks more like a DSLR and the size being somewhat similar, it will take space in your Language. So go for it only if you are sure to manage it.

Well, other than this I've hardly come across any negative thing in this camera so far. I would suggest those interested in Sony Cyber-shot HX200V to personally visit the camera store and experience it, since what you read on review sites would make no sense if you don't feel comfortable while handling it. Also considering its price, you dont purchase such products regularly so make sure you are clear about your final decision.

I hope this review helps you as i've tried my best to keep it simple & straight to the points that matter while buying such camera and by avoiding all technical jargons.

Final Verdict:

"There are many good alternative cameras in competition so you can compare this product with any of those. Finally it is your preference and choice over features and various other aspects of photography that leads to a camera buying decision. I personally have used different bridge cameras that are currently in the market but have found this one to be the best camera that suits overall requirements.  Though the price is slightly on the higher side(current selling price Rs. 24500/-), it gives you full return for your investment in the form of wonderful features and stunning images."

Very good SLR camera

I have been using this cam. I want to tell you guys this is the awesome. I bought this for my cousins marriage

The lens is also great. It has farily good aperture bracket for this camera class. You can see a bluish tinge when you take pictures in bright sunlight, but probably a sky light filter like the VF-74MP might fix it (I haven’t tried it yet). The zoom level and quality at telephoto is also pleasing. Plus you have good anti-stabilization.

The viewfinder is large, and you can tilt it up or down. That’s great too! That has helped me take some great shots in crowded places, when I had to hold the camera high. The colour and brightness are also good. And you have many preview modes. The histogram mode helps you analyze the brightness levels of the scene if you have control over the lighting conditions.

Cheap Chinese product
Jun 24, 2012 11:51 PM 4765 Views

I bought this model of camera about 4 years ago. For a first time digicam user, I wasn’t very aware of the other models that are there in the market. However, I was impressed by the 3 year service warranty that Sony gave and purchased what was at that time the lowest price among Sony cameras. It is a 6 MP cam with 3x optical zoom. I paid 11,000 Rs. for it. The MAJOR flaws in the model are typically never mentioned in their ads. All over the city, I could see Sony ads showing this model of camera.

  1. The model drains battery like crazy. Alkaline batteries do not even last more than 12-18 photos. Brand new set of batteries give a battery level indicator of 50% on the LCD screen.

  2. The structure itself looks like made of plastic imported from china. The battery door and the latch are so weak. When you push the AA size batteries in and slide the door shut, the battery door latch just breaks off. I replaced batteries about five times and it broke. I then had to stop using the camera for over two years.

  3. Shutter speed is terrible. You need to place it on auto mode on a steady surface to get a steady image. The slightest of movement blurs the image.

  4. Buttons are so clumsy and rickety. You often need to hold down the button for a few seconds before it can shoot.

When I first took it to a service center within warranty, I was told that the tiny battery lid would cost me 1200 Rs to replace. I inevitably paid it because I had spent a fortune on buying the camera and on the batteries.

I bring it back after service and within a few days of usage, the door broke again.

I was in no mood to spend money on it again. I just dumped it away in a corner hoping I would find some local camera repairman who might repair it for a lesser price.

Terrible camera and Sony should have ideally recalled this model. I wonder why no one in India filed a case in a consumer court about this. You can see in the picture - the little grip that helps clip the battery door with the unit breaks off because it is of cheap PVC plastic. It is not at all strong to hold two heavy AA sized batteries or frequent opening and closing.
