Dont think, just buy it
Jun 12, 2007 11:18 PM 2120 Views

If you are looking for a stylish, slim or light weight camera than its not the right choice. But if you really care about quality of picture or video, this is the perfect camera for you. Value for money: 200%

The only cons of this camera are style and size. It’s a bit bulky and less attractive camera but in the quality of picture its far ahead than its competitors.

7.1 mega pixel camera with 4x optical zoom, 20 shooting modes and 2.0 inch LCD, what more do you need or what more can you get in 220 USD?  As any other canon camera its highly user friendly, even rookies can take excellent pictures with this one. Picture quality is extra ordinary, not only in the daylight but also in dark. Its flash is also very powerful compared to other cameras. Flash range is more that 10 feet.

Video quality is also fabulous for a digital camera. Supports large range of resolutions and frame rate. If you have enough memory than check out the video taken at 640x480 & 30 fps, its awesome.

Apart from six while balance presets & auto white balance it supports custom white balance. But anyways u r not going to use this mode. Bcoz auto mode is more than good for any light condition. Panorama is awesome.

I have been using this camera since 6 months and I have seen many smaller or lighter or more stylish cameras than this one but I haven’t regretted my decision to buy this camera for a single moment. If you are a style junky than forget this one. For everybody else don’t miss it

Good product but bad after sales service-in India
Jun 04, 2007 02:30 PM 1675 Views

The product is very good indeed but after sales services in India, especially in Delhi is really bad. I gave my camera for some CCD unit defect which they corrected but in the process damaged my flash unit for which I had to shell out money from my pocket. No one in  the company pays heed to your complaint .

So, if any one is interested in this product, my only suggestion is that we careful on what you are getting into. After sales service which is a very important factor in your purchase decision is not good(atleast I have a personal grudge).

I have written to everyone in the company and even spoke to the quality assurance team but in vain. Nothing happened. The kept on insisting that the fault is mine and my flash unit was damaged even before the camera was given for repair of CCD unit. Even though I have written documents which implies that their engineers made the mistake, they are not owning up the mistake.

Cheers .

CANON S2 (IS) THE BEST
May 29, 2007 01:50 PM 4910 Views

Canon S2 IS(Image stabilization) - Just to enlighten the many about this camera, Canon brought out the camera to the market in July 2005. From that day till now it has been in the top list of most popular cameras in any camera review site or online shopping site. The only digital camera to rule the sales chart for such a long time is S2 IS. That shows the quality of the camera and the performance that you get along with it. The camera has 12x ultra sonic motor based zoom for multi speed zoom and complete silent zoom operation. It has a 5 megapixel CCD sensor and a really useful lcd screen that is foldable. Canon has carefully engineered the camera and have not left even the smallest of details. It has a nifty EVF(Electronic view finder) which in turn saves the battery a lot. One more thing about the camera is the Super Macro mode. Imagine taking the picture of an object by touching the object with the lens of the camera. Thats as good as a microscope.

One thing special about the canon cameras is the DIGIC processor used. This helps in a lot of image processing and effects. No other camera has such good features like MyColor mode where you can swap colors of the objects or give a color accent to an object where in the object you select alone will be shown in color and the rest of the area will be in black and white. The camera also supports panaroma view in various directions.

One more super feature of the camera is the Video mode. It has a video button ready for us to take the video instead of turning the dial to video mode and waiting for the camera software to switch to the video mode. It saves a lot of time especially in those special and critical moments when your kid tries to walk on its own or you catch your friend flirting with THE GIRL and you wanna show the action to your friends.

Another good thing is the special shortcut button that you can assign to any particular funtion of the camera like the picture size of filter effect, etc.

There are so many more things I can tell about this camera but let me cut it short. The camera takes really good quality pictures with modes for NORMAL, FINE and SUPERFINE picture quality. The videos taken in the camera can be compared to TV quality and you got to see it to believe it. It has stereo mic so when you record videos the sound is recorded in stereo too.(Thats really awesome)

The camera also has intervalometer, multi shot, custom color filters and many such things.

The Manual setting in the camera makes it comparable to a DSLR with options to select the White balance, shutter speed, Exposure compensation, Focal length, flash strength, Manual focus, and much more.

Truly a amateur - pro camera which will keep you out of boredom for a long time.

My recommendation truly 100% worth the money you pay.

Make every shot a Powershot...
May 23, 2007 09:47 PM 2555 Views

Its been around 10 months since I bought my very own Canon Powershot A540, my first digicam. It turned out to be a great purchase. Still picture and video quality is very good, Camera and Software are both easy to use, very sturdy (fell 2 times on the ground, but nothing happened except scratch on the body though please don't try this at home). It was also selected as top compact digi cam available in one of the tech shows.

Just love taking pictures, upload them and share with my friends.

The picture editing and downloading facility from the camera are superb and very efficient.Negative points could be being a bit bulky (compared to some super slim cams in the market) and the camera eats out the batteries very quickly.

Currently it's available at around 12000 bucks (I got it around 10 months back at 15000 grands).

Thanks,

Sandeep

Great buy - Zoom, clarity, Auto-stabilize
Apr 24, 2007 06:20 PM 3756 Views

Canon S2 is an awesome camera. It is really worth the money for novices. I've travelled around NZ with this camera. Most photographs are very impressive and look professional. It has a wide array of shooting options you can explore. The zoom is fantastic at 12x, Auto stabilise feature ensures that the clarity is perfect even at maximum zoom. The color quality is also fantastic. It uses a standard SD card. I'd recommed gettign a 1 GB card because once you start snapping, its hard to stop.

The only negative factor with this camera, you cannot do anything about extra light. It makes faces look darker in 12pm sun. I have tried all options but none work. Therefore, if you're looking for something that can fake an SLR althought You cant...you know what to get. I'm sure the latest S3 is only and improvement of this model.

Kottayam India
Canon Service Center at Kochi, Kerala, India
Mar 22, 2007 01:23 PM 7727 Views

I have a Canon SD400 digital camera bought a year and half ago. It was purchased in the USA and I am currently using it here in India.

About 3 months ago, its LCD was broken and I approached the Canon Service Center in Kochi, Kerala to get the LCD replaced. They promised me that they would complete the work in 30 days(per the rules written behind the invoice) as they have to send the item to Delhi. The charges were Rs.3411 which they wanted as Demand Draft(they don't accept'pay at par checks'!) plus Rs.200 for sending it to Delhi.

I agreed for the terms and conditions and handed over the camera at the Service Center in Kochi and did not hear anything from them for a month and a half. In the 7th week, I made a few phone calls to check the status and every time got the same reply that'they will check with the Delhi Center and let me know' and again no further news. I was frustrated with the kind of hide and seek they were playing and wrote a strong email to the Canon Help Desk. They told me to contact the Kochi Branch Manager Mr. Baiju Nambayil at 9847709809 and there was no response as the no. was not anymore in use. Ironically this guy is now the incharge for the Bangalore Center too. Good luck Bangaloreans if you have some thing to do with Canon Service, Bangalore!

Below is the next email that I sent him-

Hello Mr. Nambayil,

Please see the conversation below. I tried to call your cell no. and it is not reachable or disconnected. I tried the toll free no, but am not able to reach that one too. Your Kochi Center has the worst customer care I have ever seen for Canon. They don't even bother to call me and let me know the status. The only thing I want to know now is whether I will get my camera back, repaired or un-repaired! Please call me at - ASAP. Otherwise, I will be forced to take further action on this.Hope to hear from you soon.

At this, he promised me to get me my camera after a week(end of the 8th week!). Finally, the camera came back from Delhi with no battery and memory card. So, they made me wait for 3 more days before I could pick the camera up from their office. And the camera handed over on 13/1/07 was given back to me(repaired) on 15/03/07!.

Hope that these comments will help you when you go next time to Canon Service Kochi or Bangalore. The only thing I don't understand is the third world attitude towards paid services. I bet, I would have got a superior service if it were to be in the USA. Bottom line, my experience with Canon Service in India was really pathetic and disgusting.

A good buy
Mar 15, 2007 03:45 PM 5475 Views

This is my fourth camera(second digital camera).  I had olympus and nikon filim cameras and kodak easy share V550 digital camera before buying this.

The picutre quality(in terms of vivid  color and reduced noice level) is very good in this camera.

*Pros:

*- Quality of picutre is good

  • 12 x zoom(and the image stabilizer is amazing)

  • Optical image stabilization

  • Good grip to handle

  • allows manual control(could be a step before going for SLR)

  • Macro mode is good

  • Looks like a'Pro' camera

*Cons

*- Size is big(though it gives good grip)

  • Movie mode requies lot of space(only .AVI files, no mpeg.  the highest resolution of movie requies 2GB for 10 minutes:(, but there are options for various movie mode/size)

*Some tips:

*- Keep additional set of batteries

  • Keep higher capacity SD card(I have two 2GB SD card)

  • Please visit https://flickr.com/photos/devakumar/ for my photos(most of them taken using Canon S3 IS, check the photo property to confirm)

  • Also visit https://steves-digicams.com for review of various digigal cameras

Micro Monster - Picture Perfect !
Mar 07, 2007 09:52 AM 2591 Views

Canon  PowerShot  SD600  is  known  as  IXUS60  in  Asia

Excellent Pix & Videos, Versatility n Programmability of manual controls are just some of the

sexy features of this little babe IXUS60. Pix r clear enough 2 capture even dust particles or

Orbs when shooting in dusty areas &  ghostly/haunted areas, ha ha:-)  respectively

Cam size= credit card size

thickness= your thumb nail / thickness of pack of playing cards.

Use this setting 2 get the true night pic better than its competitors like Sony, Casio, etc.

Shooting Mode= Manual

Exposure Compensation=+2

Skin Tone= Dark

Metering method= Evaluative

Compression= Superfine(for most settings)

Flash= Off(if object is illuminated)

Flash= Auto if there is poor light.

To Simulate anti-shake feature, use timer to snap the photos. Set the timer to say 2 seconds and press the button, buzzer will beep and there u go. the software inside camera does the job of snapping the photo which r crisp clear and offcourse with 0% blurrrrrr. BEST anti-shake by default is present in Casion Exilim series. but Casio is no match 2 Canon when it comes 2 indoor /

close-up/night photos. Remember anti-shake doesnt work well in night modes/while shooting in dark.

Metering methods are simply mindbogling. Using that u can snap clear pix under bright lights

even when the cam is facing the light source.

Slight Con is when the low battery warning appears then u have roughly 10 min 2 finish up the photo session. So be quick or carry a spare battery with u.

A very good product
Jan 20, 2007 12:18 PM 1892 Views

I bought this camera sometime in Feb 2005 while I was in US. It's clarity, I have no words. Even in the worst lit conditions, this camera gives you a very high clarity. Pictures took in my friends camera came 90% dark whereas the ones took in mine were very clear. We could see the persons face clearly even while he was dancing. Absolutely no shake.

The image stabilizer is very good and saving speed is also pretty good. As its just a 3MP camera, you can get a 256MB Compact flash in addition to the standard 32MB it ships with or if you have the habit of taking videos too then go for a 512 CF. Its definitely more than sufficient.

The only negative thing I have seen in this is, if you use the LCD display then it can drain a full duracell battery in 25 to 30 min. I would say you switch to the view finder when you get the battery light flashing and you would be able to take a good 15 pictures without flash. Ofcourse you can continue to use the same battery in a walkman or something which requires less power.

For those who face the same problem as I do, the solution I have found is, go and get yourself a 2500milli amph or higher re-chargable battery and it lasts much longer. I bought myself a set of 2800 milli amph rechargeable batteries from the US and now its pretty fine.

Bangalore India
Great companion
Jan 19, 2007 12:27 PM 3503 Views

I have recently bought this model from Chennai after spending around 2 hours looking at the various models in this price range. It came with its own case. I bought extra batteries(LiMH) and charger along with a 512MB memory card. I am going to buy a bigger memory card(1GB) pretty soon. Some things that really struck me about this camera were

Tthe manual mode in which you can actually change shutter speeds etc for experimenting. This is not available in the Sony or the Kodak cameras in this range. I have not been able to experiment with these myself till now but will surely do so.

The number of modes that are available. Simply exhorbitant and the options in each mode are also pleasing. One thing that is a bit problematic is that it takes a little bit of time to understand each of these modes. I am still in the learning phase.

The speed with which the camera prepares itself for the next snap. At full battery and using flash, it took hardly any time which actually took me by surprise.

The weight of the camera is very less. does not look that way from the bulkiness of the camera but you hardly feel the weight.

The wide range of pics that can be taken from this camera is great and I will really recommend this camera for anyone who is planning to take on digital still photography as a hobby(though the movie clip option is also present but I am of the type who feels that movie clips should be taken from handicams which are made for that purpose. If my camera has that option then it is a good thing but the camera should be able to take proper pics for which it has been made primarily). I have started uploading pics on my bolg which I will suggest for anyone to see at https://falcontravels.blogspot.com

The camera has a lot to teach anyone.

A Must Buy.

Good camera, but a few trade-offs
Dec 02, 2006 08:14 PM 3655 Views

I bought this cam in June 06 and have used it on a couple of vacations. The camera's build quality is excellent. No cheap/flimsy/breakable battery covers etc. The camera is quite bulky, but light. A camera case is not included. I bought one at the local Burma Bazaar for INR150. Outdoor pics are brilliant and are very clear. The camera offers ISO sensitivity upto ISO800. However, I found that anything above ISO400 is very noisy and is unusable. Howver, you can reduce the noise in the picture by using the noise filter in photoshop - it makes a substantial difference. The flash is limited to around 11 ft. Indoor photos/low light photos are less than excellent, but satisfactory for most users. The 4x optical zoom is excellent. The zoom at the widest setting is 35mm which gives a wide field of view for group snaps and scenery shots. The digital zoom offered does not crop the photo like newer cameras, but uses software interpolation which degrades image quality. I have turned off digital zoom in the camera and use the crop photo function in photoshop instead. The LCD is somewhat small and grainy. It tends to wash out in bright sunlight and you might be forced to use the optical viewfinder in such situations. 1800Mah NiMH batteries lasted for around 150 shots with the LCD on. The main drawback is video. It can capture video only at 20fps in 320x240 mode and at 16fps in 640x480 mode. This makes the video somewhat jerky and unpleasant to view (Most other cameras offer 640x480 @ 30fps) In the camera's manual mode, you can set the aperture and the shutter speed manually. However, for some crazy reason, canon has decided to provide only 2 aperture settings in manual mode! The light metering in manual mode kept giving me wrong readings, making it difficult to judge aperture and shutter speeds required. In short, the manual mode is unusable for anything. The camera also lacks aperture priority and shutter priority manual modes. Conclusion: If you can afford the additional INR2000, go in for the canon A540 which offers better video,LCD and manual controls. Some users have experienced problems with the zoom lens. Google for "e18 error". This is a problem which some people have faced with all canon 'A' series cameras. I myself have not faced any such problems.

Zoom Macha Le (Best in the League)
Nov 27, 2006 05:53 PM 3017 Views

Just got this fabulous piece from Canon 2 months back for 17,500.... And made optimal use of it during Diwali... The review is been written after testing the Digicam for over 400 Snaps and 7 Video Shoots.

The USP of this George Eastmann invention is its Zoom Capability... Although you get many higher Zoom cameras than this almost upto 24x Optical zoom from Panasonic and Kodak... but the best thing about A700 is its compactness and price... You can fit this and carry it all along in your Jeans Pocket....

Just to give a brief on its Specifications:

LCD: 2.5 Inch TFT display.... biggest in the league

Optical Zoom: 6x (Really good... I could even read the Numbers coded on Air Planes Flying at the Hyderabad Airport: And my house is located almost 500 Meters from the Air Strip)

Digital Zoom: 4x (As useless as a comb for a baldy)

MegaPixels: 6MP (Much much more than enough, just as much more as an 80 GB Hard Disk for DOS based system) I think 4MP is more than enuf for a good clear photograph.

Batteries: I think this is where Canon has an upperhand over Sony as no proprietary batteries need to be used for Canon. Just 2 AA sized standard batteries. (2 Duracell can get you atleast 70 Snaps, might be an understatement). Anyways best way is to go for Rechargeable batteries... I got 6 Rechargeable batteries and a charger for 1200 Rs (NiMH 1300 mA)... With two batteries I could shoot more than 300 Snaps...1300 mA decides how many snaps you can take with AA batteries. Higher the number the better. You can also get 1100 mA and lower ones. The cost goes down accordingly.

Also dont replace your rechargeable batteries until they are fully discharged, this helps in keeping the battery life intact.

OK enough on the batteries.....

Fully Auto....Fully Manual.... Not a paradox friends.... Its true with A700... You can make it absolutely automatic or you can exhibit full control over the images you take....

4 Types of Exposure Control, to keep a tab on those glary images.... Also available is the Red Eye Reductionfeature

18 different modes of shoots are available in this which includes Night Mode, Indoor, Landscape, Portrait (I liked this mode, it blurs the background and only focusses on the object to be pictured).

Also the image stitch facility lets you take different shots of a wide picture and then you can stitch the images very easily with the software provided to make it one single image.

Two other modes Color Accent and Color Swap are useful utilities to have some fun with your images. You can make them Monochrome with the Color Accent.

ISO settings are available from 80 to 800 and Auto. It just decides how far your flash will go but I think most of the times its better to leave it on Auto. Level of 800 will cause the flash to go farthest but will create disturbance in the image, hence optimal ISO should be between 100 to 400.

Memory provided with the pack is peanuts, so be ready to put some money into an SD memory card. I got a Kingston 1 GB SD memory card for 1100 Rs. I think Kingston is the best in market.

1 GB memory can let you save minimum 800 Photographs at 4 MP setting.

It Can be conected directly to the printer.... and has a USB2.0 port with Cable provided... Also can be connected to any TV set be it NTSC or PAL System.... so no worries even if you decide to settle outside India in future....

Yeah... Most important .....you can shoot videos with this at 30 Frames per second and upto 1 GB limit.... so which I believe would come approximately to 10-12 Minutes @ 640 x 480 Resolution

What Else... Is there anything I didnt cover....

Yup.... compared to a Sony or Olympus.... I find the Canon really good.... although Sony are much more compact and good aesthetically.... But if we compare features I think Canon beats them Hands Down... Especially the A700...

Once Again I would reiterate.... Its Zoom Macha le with A700

Few Tips for Buying DigiCam:

  1. Forget there is any such thing like Digital Zoom

  2. All the available models in market other than A700 are 4X Optical zoom

  3. 4 MP is what anyone will need unless he is not a professional photgrapher

  4. Dont go for properietary batteries, just imagine yourself at a tourist spot and your battery goes asleep... You cant use the normal AA batteries

  5. Dont go by the printed price on the box..... Bargains happen Big Time....

  6. If you are in Hyderabad, I would refer you to Chimalgi Photo Optics in Secunderabad, the guys there are very knowledgable and would certainly help you a good buy.

  7. Go for something compact, the bigger ones are the better ones but eventually after the initial excitement what would matter is the comfort to carry

  8. Dont look to save some 1000 Rs and go for a lesser known brand like Panasonic and HP, the quality of images differ a lot.

Hope the experiences I had helps you make better decision in your buying.

Thanks... Happy Snapping

Hitherto, in the domain of film cameras, brands such as Nikon, Pentax, Minolta, Canon, Olympus, and Yashica ruled the roost. But with the advent of the more electronically oriented ‘film less’ digital cameras things have changed. Electronic giants such as Sony, Panasonic, and Samsung have entered the fray to queer the pitch. These companies have a head start in the field of electronics and all they needed to do was to find and fuse suitable optics to come out with their own brand of cameras. Sony proved to be an unqualified success with their high precision Carl Zeiss optics. This has forced the traditional camera makers out of their comfort zone. Nikon, Pentax, and Olympus which were not that much into electronics are finding the transition to digital photography a little difficult, but they have an awesome reputation when it comes to cameras.

Canon, however, have a significant presence in electronics and are finding the transition much easier, and that reminds me I must get on with my review on the product in question.

The Canon PowerShot A640 Digital Camera belongs to the genre of compact cameras which is what most consumers would be looking for to buy. With so many compact digital cameras out there you may well ask … “what is so special about this one?” Well to tell you the truth, a lot of things are special about this camera.

RESOLUTION:

Let’s start with the resolution because that’s what makes a photo look sharp. The A640 is equipped with a 10 Megapixel CCD sensor. The digital images taken with this camera are breathtaking, crisp, and vivid. Generally, a 3 or 4 MP camera will give excellent 4 x 6 pics. But, try zooming on to a person in a group photo and you will understand why these comparatively low resolution images simply will not do. In a A640, however, one can zoom and crop the image to leave out unnecessary detail and still come up with a razor sharp image. Most people wrongly take it into their mind that they don’t need such high resolution photos because they won’t be dealing with poster size photos every other day. The point is, the more the resolution the more it is easy to cut and crop images to suit one’s needs without comprising on the quality of the end image. That is where 10 MP comes in handy.

OPTICAL AND DIGITAL ZOOM:

Most compact cameras come with 3x optical zoom and their MP resolution is not quite enough for them to add to that with digital zoom. On the other hand the A640 comes with a 4x optical zoom and has enough mega pixel muscle to make it 16x zoom without comprising on quality of the image. So you practically have a 16x zoom camera.

LCD VIEWFINDER:

The A640 comes with a large 2.5 inches, 115000 pixel, LCD screeen. Now, that’s a lot of real estate in terms of compact camera screens. The photos look larger and there is enough detail for the user to decide whether the photo is good enough or there is need for a retake. In some cameras the screens are so small that you won’t know how good or how bad the photo is until you connect it to your pc or get the print. Of course, by then it is probably too late for a retake.

I still haven’t come to the real juicy part. The A640 sports a swivel ‘vari-angle’ screen which means you can shoot pictures at almost any angle and still get a perfect shot. Now, you don’t need to bend down to shoot subjects below your eye level or step on a pedestal to get a better overhead angle. All you need to do is to adjust the sceen to your line of sight. This camera gives you the freedom to shoot at crazy angles. This design also helps in protecting the screen better from scratches and dust as it can be swivelled facing the back of the camera and tucked in like you would normally do in a camcorder.

SHOOTING MOVIES:

The A640 allows you to shoot movies at 30 frames per second and resolution of 640 x 480. What is great is that you can watch the playback on TV in full screen mode with audio. That’s a handy feature because you don’t need a camcorder anymore to shoot your movies. This camera allows you to shoot extra long movies unlike some digital cameras. It supports even a 4 GB memory card which can get you close to 40 minutes of high quality video. Some cameras don’t support memory cards beyond 1GB. There are also options for shooting at 320 x 240 resolution and 15 fps which allows you to shoot video upto 175 minutes on a 4 GB card.

OPTICAL VIEW FINDER:

The A640 comes with a real image optical viewfinder. The advantage is that one can switch off the LCD screen to save battery life. The optical viewfinder helps you to zoom on to the subject or use the 35mm wide angle with ease while composing a picture.

MEMORY:

Canon offers a 32 MB MMC card with this camera but it is nowhere sufficient for a camera of such high resolution. The sensible thing to do is buy a 1 GB card. This camera was tested on a 4 GB card and it gave 960 photos at Superfine (3648x2736) resolution and in large format. With same superfine resolution and in small format you get 3,782 high quaality photos. Set at normal (1600x1200) resolution and 4 x 6 format you get 13,244 photos. At email resolution (640x480) you get a whopping 82,766 snaps. With a high capacity memory card you can actually use this camera as your digital photo album.

BUILD AND QUALITY:

The A640 doesn’t look like an expensive toy like most compact digital cameras do. It looks and feels like a real camera. The camera comes in a two tone grey black finish. There’s a solid feel to this camera and the user feels comfortable holding it while taking pictures. The camera is slightly heavier than normal compact digital cameras and the four AA cells that you need to operate this camera with actually don’t help its cause. Also, it doesn’t fit in your shirt pocket if that is what you are looking for.

MISCELLANEOUS:

It is not the lightest camera on the market and slightly bulky too for a compact model but it’s high on performance. Actually, the use of AA alkaline batteries give you freedom to shoot whenever you like instead of the rechargeable lithium ion batteries that need to be charged before you can use them which means you can be caught napping every now and then. You can also use rechargeable NiMH batteries if you want to save on costs.

The A640 also allows for attaching a separate wide angle lens to get more in the picture frame or a telephoto lens for shooting distant objects. Both the lenses need to be purchased separately but they are affordable. The swivel LCD screen can be used for taking excellent self portraits.

The camera features 21 separate shooting modes which make taking pictures a cinch. You can use ISO 800 for flash free shooting in places where flash is not permitted. The camera also comes with a full function manual mode for the serious photographer.

In a nutshell, the picture quality compares favourably with the high end digital SLR cameras minus the exhorbitant costs.

Hello readers,

I just wanted to share my thoughts about the tiny though very intelligent gadget.I own a A530 from the last 4 months I should tell this camera delivers great picture quality which no one in this price as well MP range.I just tell u after using this i purchased 5 cameras of same model now from the canon and recommend others look into this little machine. It works best inits Auto mode.It records awesome movies clips to and that too with the help of inbuilt microphjone u can actually record voices with the action and best part it has direct connectivity to the printer as well youy TV!!! U can directly play this machine to ur TV sets without any need for DVD player to view.the reslution is also perfect. One thing where it is lacking is it has no internal memory but with a 2 GB card u can capture the whole world into this camera and u can continue to record ur movie clip till the time there is memory in the card that means u can record 2 GB of movie in one go like a camcorder may be better than camcorder

Excellent buy for amatures !

This is one of the master peice I bought 6 months back and till date I haven't regreted my dicision for a single instant. The camera has very nice features, different modes to use and most important very easy to use.The price when I bought was around 220$ and seem value for money.

The night visions, picture quality is very good. The camera mode is another awesome feature which provides u with excellent short vedios depending upon ur memory backup.

It uses AA batteries which are easily availbale through out the world and beleive me u will never find it out of power when u want it the most....... thats my experience.

Its mush better than sony cameras which use properitry batteries and are hard to find.

Size wise its a bit heavier but then u won't get a slip one for that money.

Its best of amatures and for first han d experience.

Recommended mermory size would be 1 GB which can carry around 600 or more shots before you want to delete them and start off again.

The camera is worth the buy

Ever went on a safari or to national parks like Bharatpur..... whereyou would want to shoot the wildlife from far away but could never everget a perfect picture of the animal or bird? This is where thiscamera's massive 12x zoom come handy. Shooting birds and leopards froma distance is a wonderful experience with this camera.

Its got a 6MegaPixel lens and the picture quality is crystal clear especially whenyou are shooting outdoors. All world details are picked up perfectly.Zooming into the picture you can see every detail clearly.

Howeverthe camera somewhat dissapoints in indoor shooting. In low light it isnot able to give that clear a picture as it gives when you are shootingoutdoors.

The macro shooting is also wonderful and you can get extremely close to objects.

Itsgot a number of shooting modes including where you can choose to setthe shutter speed or the aperture. It also features a full automaticmode as well as other shooting modes like night, fireworks, snow etc.

Thebattery is also good. It uses four alkaline batteries (the normalpencil cells) which last for more than a day of continous shooting. Youcan also use recahrgeable batteries also.

Its a Canon.....what more can I say? They make one of the world's best camera's and this is no doubt one of them.

Thiscamera is aimed at those people who want to make a transition from anormal trigger-happy camera to a more SLR type, which is not a full SLRbut provides some levels of experimentation.

Also for those who love the outdoors.

I bought it for around Rs23000 in Singapore which I consider is a fare price.

So go ahead and buy it without any hiccups!!

Its Gud..

Hi everybody,

This model is an upgraded version of A420.. when compared to tat it has more gud features added with it now. As iam new in handling a digital camera, the 4 mega pixel and 4x optical zoom makes the picture looks pretty gud.. the battery charge is the one thing which lacks it back when compared to other digi cams.. those u r looking for a digital camera with somewhat nice features with less price.... better try this one.... it can satisfy ur expectations.. pictures can be zoomed into 2220X 1024 size.. pixel sharpness is gud. faster transfer of files from camera to computers. if u doesnt matter abt the price then u can go for 500 series and above models... Data cable, the software CD (used to edit our images) is very gud in quality... as I said earlier this is one will appear as a gud one to people who r in search of a camera with affordable price

gud luck !!

After my purchase of Canon PowerShot S3 IS this is my second review here, however for the ease of people who wish to know more about this camera I though of posting this review with simple pros and cons explained in plain language. The camera provides better output than I expected, but for a amature user there are lot more than just an output. Those are discussed in this Review.

Actually there are some important points to be noted before buying this model.

Advantage:

  1. Good optical zoom capability 12x

  2. Many options for Manual controls

  3. The bulky size gives strong hold to the camera

  4. Image stabilizer for taking better pictures

Disadvantage:

  1. The battery drains very quick, because of IS and zoom lens action (it’s operated with Ultrasonic motor)

  2. The Bulky size, some time difficult to carry around by a normal home user

  3. Smaller view screen

  4. No support for underwater equipments

  5. Canon cameras doesn’t support mpeg format for movies shot

Now come to my experience, this camera works good for me it is a kind of bridge between novice and pro user look at my previous review on the same camera. This is my first step into digital photography.

Secondly if at all you are planning for underwater photography in any of your visit to a fresh water lake, sea or pond you may not have an option to buy the water proof box for this model camera, but all other PowerShot from Canon has waterproof boxes in affordable price.

Need to carry fully charged 2500amh batteries 2 sets with you, when you go on a trip as I mentioned above it consumes enough power.

There are not much of extra fittings for this camera, other than the wide and tele converter lenses. But I suggest not buying those.

You need to buy a Digital camera bag from lowepro or other manufacturers, which will be better option. I bought the canon original pouch but it doesn’t have enough space and no extra pockets to carry additional batteries and fittings.

Buy the Sony rechargeable 2500amh batteries 8 nos. with original Sony charger with LCD indicator for battery level. It gives little more durability of power for Canon PowerShot S3 IS.

Due to lack of support for mpeg file format results in heavy use of memory card 1 second may take 1 -2MB of your SD card memory. Canon cameras only support .avi format. So if you buy SD card buy a maximum size what you can afford, some times you may need to use the camera to get some clips instead of running around switching on the handy cam.

Finally if you are buying from US you will get only made in China, Taiwan or Malaysia. There is no different from buying the same in India Grey market. Hence think twice before ordering from US, some times it may cost you the duty on the airport transit. The best option would be buying it from local Canon Dealer, as you will get Indian Warranty and peace of mind.

Check my gallery; today also I have updated lots of pictures taken by Canon PowerShot S3 IS in Tokyo, Japan. Post your comments without fail.

Probably one of the best camera's in its league
Oct 11, 2006 10:12 PM 5785 Views

My first experience with a powershot S1 IS was early 2004. Bought this beauty mainly for its 10X optical zoom. Then came the 12X version to compete with one of its own kind from Sony, the Canon powershot S2 IS.

Now here we are today talking about the S3 IS. Believe me you wouldntwant anything apart from an S3 IS if you are looking at a not so SLR but SLR like camera. The shutter speed, the ease of use, the amazingand innumerable features, the image stability, picture quality, flasheverything is extremely commendable.

The following are the highlights of the S3 IS

12x optical zoom lens with USM and UD lens element

Optical Image Stabilizer 6.0 Megapixel CCD

Larger size 2.0” Vari-angle LCD

30fps VGA movies with stereo sound and Photo in Movie feature

DIGIC II, iSAPS and Flexizone AF/AE for fast, precise results and 2.3 fps continuous shooting performance

20 shooting modes and My Colors photo effects High ISO Auto and ISO 800 for low light flexibilityWidescreen (16:9) recording

S3IS can give you an extra 1MP resolution as compared to the S2 series.

Canon will give you the best of the products in this league, howeveryou may want to know a couple of things about the powershot before youventure into buying them.

A) They are not the sleekest of their kind, they are very neatly madethough and you can also get some beautiful pouches to carry themarround for about $17 on Amazon.

B) No body ever forces your flash out. It is auto flash you can use Manual mode, flash suppression mode anything to use / not use your flash. They are the best of the flashes you can get in any camera however if somebody gets physical with it, then the auto pop up option will start misbehaving.

If you can keep your camera in good condition and handle it the way oneshould then probably you would never have any issues with it at all.

Extremely far off objects can also be captured in a very professional manner with these cameras. The image stability is fantastic. The video recording option is a great plus.

I Would definitely recommend anybody who is interested in good photography to purchase this master piece.

Cheers !!!
