Canon PowerShot SD950 Reviews

Accurate color reproduction, great zoom
Jul 31, 2009 02:21 PM 1923 Views

I had bought my Canon Powershot A720 IS in May 2008 for around 9K through ebay. I selected Canon after comparing the photos taken with Sony/Nikon digital cameras. I would definitely say that Canon is the best in color reproduction and the clarity and crispness in the photos.

I was impressed with the number of shots I could take with a pair of fully charged rechargeable batteries. It was around 400 with a good number of photos along with flash. The 6X zoom is impressive provided you dont jerk your arm while clicking. In the wide end also, it accomodated quite a number of people at closer range shots.

I found the flash recycle time to be a bit slow. But what can you expect with AA type rechargeable batteries? But this drwaback is countered by the number of shots which can be taken with a AA rechargeable which is far far more than that of a box type compact Ni-Cadmium rechargeable battery.

We can toy around with various controls of the camera due to the presence of manual settings like exposure control, flash intensity, flash speed, aperture control, shutter speed, ISO speed, etc. It's not an SLR but still we have all these features which will not be even used/found out by most of the casual first time photographers.

I had compared the shots taken with my Canon and a Sony Cybershot(W-50 or some model). The color reproduction on the Sony was not upto the mark. The A720 got it correct. The Sony tried to artificialise the scene, kind of making it artificially more sharp and crisp instead of getting the real scene in good color and lighting. Without flash, the shots on the Sony sucked. The manual control of the Canon came to rescue here. By adjusting the shutter speed/exposure/ISO we can get the scene captured without a flash, in its own glory. I personally like to get scenes captured in the natural setting rather than with a flash.

The LCD of the A720 is having less pixels but I felt we could easliy review the pictures on this screen. The histogram is not a live one but we can review the picture just after taking it. The picture taken can be kept on the screen by pressing the set/fucntion button just after taking a shot. This wasy we can review it then n there itself.

Overall I think this is a good all-rounder camera. The video is also somewhat good with 30 fps and longplay which is a boon for saving card space. The successor for A720, ie A590/580, is much lighter and faster. But it loses out on the zoom(only 4X) and the video frame rate is reduced(20 fps). Anyway I'm more than satisfied with the photos taken with this camera.

S5 IS is a good camera but bulky
Jul 24, 2009 01:03 AM 6423 Views

I have been using camera for almost 2 yrs, It is nice camera with 8 mega pixel and 16x zoom. It has so many features, 90% of feature you may not be using at all. I like the macro feature the most, which helps me with takign pictures of small insects, or other stuff in detail.

But I am not really satisfied with this camera, because I am not a pro photographer, and I like compact camera which you can keep in pocket or on belt. I like my nikon camera, which I was using for many year but when I bought this s5IS, I gave the nikon to my dad and he lost it... Else I would have been using Nikon compact cam only.

Having said that, Canon S5IS is very good for those who dont mind taking camera on shoulders. Many time people considered me as press man OR professional photographer with that camera, that was 2 yr back, now many such camera are in market which are used by armature like me.

Canon A590 IS - A Preview
Jul 09, 2009 02:22 PM 2457 Views

I own a Nikon D40 DSLR and have owned three P & S cams earlier.

Aesthetics/Styling/Ergo:

As you can see, this cam has a very conservative exterior, save for the glossy finich around the pistol grip (Hand grip surrounding the AA batteries).

If you look in detail, you can see the 5 way D pad is split and is very easy to use. The shutter trigger is placed conveniently and the zoom ring encircles it.

All the buttons were placed in the rear-right of the cam. It is easy to handle. The cam zooms in and out quite smoothly and with less grinding noise (compared to few other Sony and Nikon models).

Though compact, this cam wont fit comfortably in your trouser pockets.

The pistol grip as it is glossy, feels a bit slippery.

The Battery/Mem card door latch - you have to struggle a bit to put it back in place. however, doesn't feel flimsy. It feels OK and looks strong enough to hold your heavy rechargeables.

The lanyard loophole is placed on the right center just like in IXUS models.

You can include Converters too. I would say this is redundant. May be useful for some serious amateurs who use this cam for macro photography / wide angle shots etc. Not everyone fully utilizes the features. But, there may be few out there who love this option. In fact, I purchased converter and UV filter set for Canon S5IS earlier.

Menu:

As in all other Canon models, the menu is Tab operated. It is easier to navigate thro the menu.

One good feature I noticed is the sub-menu. Say, when you press the Up key in D pad, you get the Flash options (On or Off). From here, if you press Menu, you get Flash settings (Red eye, etc.).

In the D-pad, the left and right keys have limited usage. (In Tv. Av, Manual modes only)

Use the Fn option to get a set of additional features like Color modes (B/W, Sepia etc), White Balance control, ISO setting, Pic Quality, Size settings etc.

I miss the Color Accent feature. Wish Canon would have added it into this cam.

Playback / Live:

I hate the Slider switch to toggle between Live and playback modes (found in most other Canon models). BUT, in this cam, I have come across a great option to HOLD the REVIEW of the image taken lastly. This allows you to scrutinize the image you have just shot. I love this option. This prevents us from toggling between playback and live quite often.

You have the usual Thumbnails option too.

Pic Quality:

i am yet the explore the pic quality of this cam. however, having experienced few other cams before, I could recommend this cam as a good one. I read the macro capability to be 2cm in a certain mode.

Flash:

Flash quality is good. It evenly lits the subject. BUT, it has a very slow flash recycle time. Expect nearly 7~8 secs with drain batteries. I hate this.

One saviour is, the low light performance in Manual mode. Switch to manual exposure mode, set the max possible Aperture (say F2.8) and reduce the shutter, you can get great indoor lighting shots.

Battery life:

Depends on your Flash usage.

One main option I looked for while buying a cam is the usage of AA batteries. I dont want to run around with a battery charger. instead, I can always pocket two additional charged rechargeables.

And, you have the control to enhance the battery life by selecting a higher mAH battery. say 2700 mAH. So, I am sure that the batt. life should not be an issue here.

To summarize:

Pros:

  • Manual Exposure Controls.

  • 4x IS lens as compared to 3x in most other similar cams.

  • Universal standard Mem card, USB cable, batteries usage. (No need to sing Properitory Song)

  • Ofcourse, great price (6.5K in grey)

  • HOLD image preview option, reduces PB/Live toggles.

Cons:

  • POOR flash recycle time.

  • Slightly slippery grip.

  • Slightly bulky. Depends on your size requirement.

Actually, this cam suited my brother's requirement. Manual modes, Small size (not pocketable), AA batt. SD card, Standard USB cable (so I can use the same cable for my MP3 player and the cam).

I have given the title as preview, as I am new to this model. once iget a hands on, I will detail this review further. Hence, the picquality and battery life ratings are left untouched.

In fact, my younger brother has bought this camera. so, I got a chance to play with it.

Verdict:

I would definitely recommend this cam, if you are not looking for stylish looking pocketable camera, want good image quality for a GREAT price.

Hope this info helps.

Canon Powerhot SX 100 IS
Jun 02, 2009 12:12 AM 5293 Views

Even though the model I use is Canon Powerhot SX 100 IS which was purchased from USA 1+ year before I add this review in this section of 110IS. Been a user of atleast 5 digi cam models starting from Olympus D 520 which did have the 3x optical zoom as its new feature compared to the other models at the time of purchase, later 2 olympus and 2 canon models.

Currently I use this model as my friend too. Looking at the performance of these models another friend has purchased SX 110 IS which does have an 1MP advantage. As similar in features, both are identical in picture quality and performance etc.

Read several reviews as this model was just in to the US market. Most of the reviews did say that this matched the performance of its siblings s3 and s5 with higher pricing whereas this in a smaller size made the difference with similar features except for the eye view.

The picture clarity is excellent and as well the easyness to use. Purchased at approx. INR 10K. Later the price went up and as well the currency conversion rate. Added a 2GB card which came as a deal in Amazon put together with the cover specific to this model. Altogether was the best deal and hence a very satisfied user of the camera.

In a tour that we went to Coorg, all our cameras were taking the similar natural photographs which finally when merged made a difference in the quality out of the models Nikon, Sony, Olympus etc. Did make use of the 10x optical zoom to get the maximum proximity which was comparitively a better option than the others.

Overall a recommended ultra zoom camera at the price of higher point and shoot camera. Rechargeable batteries is an handicap unless purchased seperately.

Good for serious beginners
May 30, 2009 11:33 PM 3507 Views

If you are serious about photography and a beginner, this is the best camera money can buy. Can be fitted in to your front pocket(a wee tight fit), with all the manual adjustments for beginners and also point and shoot for "not so serious" folks, this is a perfect beginners camera. The only thing closest in the Indian market is Lumix, but I was somewhat hesitant for the serviceability for Lumix.

This is my second digital the first being point and shoot sony(DSC W5), and I am really learning the basics of photography on this canon. The picture quality is very good and the camera exudes a robustness which was absent in my sony. I suggest before you start using the camera read the manual thoroughly(it is a comprehensive booklet) and brush up your knowledge on photography basics from the net. You will then really appreciate the camera. If you do not want to do all this better go for a point and shoot around 4 to 5 thou cheaper.

There are two colours available, black and silver, I like black better(I got silver as I had no choice). The first thing you do after buying the camera and reading the manual is to get a good set of Ni-MH(preferably 2300 to 2500) batteries. The pictures are pretty sharp and the choices of shooting modes are many. There are different professional modes from manual mode to aperture mode, shutter speed mode, program mode, and other modes for beginners like portrait, pets, sea shore, etc etc. Even in manual mode the settings are easy to reach and can be changed quickly using the jog dial, also while you are using manual mode there is a nice brightness meter indicating over/under exposure. The digital zoom is great and this might become a niche in future, i.e pocket cameras with more then 10X digital zoom. As a matter of fact the zoom range using digital zoom can extend till 40X. Even after entering the digital zoom range(indicated by the bar above), the photo are pretty OK. There are other standard features like face recognition(upto 20), image stabilizer. It also has inbuilt photo editing features like red eye removal, size converter, etc.

The video mode is ok, changing focus etc is not allowed once the recording starts also you cannot use flash. Nothing out of ordinary here.

All in all this camera is pretty good, in no department it is extraordinary, but neither it is hugely lacking in any performance parameter either, more then that I liked this camera as a teacher to teach you the photography basics befor moving on to more serious stuff like DSLR's etc.

Not good indoors
May 11, 2009 10:05 PM 2871 Views

I have had this camera for about a year now. I would tell you its 8MP tag is totally useless. it is actually 2-3 MP camera (it seems)

well first of all the camera lacks a certified lens (eg carl zeiss, etc) . I didnt know the difference these certified lenses could make to a camera. After buying I got to know.

When you click photos outside it is fine, but INDOORS pics a re totally blurry. they are not sharp, clear. there is color dithering clearly evident on little zooming. On the outside even my nokia 3230 mobile camera(1.3 mp) clicks crystal clear photo so no big deal if a digicam can do it.

But I needed camera which will could perform indoors too. which this doesnt. Its an ok cheap option . but even you are no pro in photography , you do deserve a better camera. Get any companies' camera, but look out for lense. it should be carl zeiss, or luca , etc. I have seen mobile camera with certified lenses click better photos than this camera.

There was clear diffrence between sony camera and this one. So dont just go for MEGAPIXEL TAG. do look out for other things too. See the ATTACHED PHOTO for the dithering of color on indoor photo, and blured image.see how the colors are not clear and photo is not at all sharp.

An awesome bridge camera
May 03, 2009 01:25 AM 6215 Views

Hi guys, this is my second review posted on MS for my first camera Canon SX10IS. After a lot of research on the types of camera available in the market as well as better understanding of my need to have a camera, I froze on Canon SX 10 IS.

My requirements were: High megapixel(not that I want a banner size photograph to be printed, but I dint want any pixelation on the pic), very good picture quality, Superzoom, hotshoe, flicking LCD pannel(I'm just 5'6" and often I realise that this feature is good for short people like me, specially when I couldn't click pics thru my mobile camera, during concert by IRON MAIDEN in B'lore. I couldn't manage to get a front seat) and most importantly full manual option(I just love playing with?.everything).

Competing products: Panasonic DMC FX28, Canon SX10IS, Olympus 570UZ and Nikon P80

Nikon P80: Lacks hotshoe, flicking LCD and definately zoom is not comparable. Price and picture quality is definately quite competitive.

Panasonic DMC FZ28: Everything comparable except, picture quality on telephoto, no hot shoe and flicking screen. Price is quite competitive. Not to forget good features

Olympus 570UZ: Accorcing to me this is the best bridge camera on earth as of now, if you are ready to shell out more. fully loaded in all aspects and the zoom adjustment ring(just like an SLR camera) is simply awesome.

Canon SX10IS: Fulfiling all my requirements it won my heart. No question on picture quality. The only thing which I felt was not good(probably was a problem with all the cameras available in the market) is the limited F stop. 2.8 to 8. It gives you a freedom to capture pics with just a reasonable depth. You know at times you have a situation where you want depth in the pic, you dont have too much of light and you dont wanna increase the ISO settings to grain you pic. also you are not carrying a external flash light. what would you do? Leaving all this Canon is still a choice for most of them.

These days I click on every damn thing that I see and see it thru a photographer's eyes. Isme shutter spped toda sa jyada chahiye. Usme light kam hai. yeh kuch jyada bright hai.bla bla bla

Happy clicking

AFTER 4700 clicks / almost 2 years

  • Although she is quite old and outdated compared to the new ones available, but its still my sweetheart.

  • I lost the camera hood and lens cap. This is a genuine problem with this camera. The lens cap is always loose and it does not even have a string / strap attached to it.

  • By now I have mastered almost all the features of the Camera and most of them are amazing.

  • An since I have crossed the stage of an amatuer, therefore features like manual focus and comparatively higher noise in low light areas, pinches me. You will keep rolling the jog dial to maually focus, while your subject might go away. I love the focus ring option available in Fujifilm HS10. In most occasions the flash is too harsh on the subject and hence I avoid it. the result is I change the ISO, exposure etc which adversely impacts the picture. Night photography is not the'great' in SX10IS. Note'great' is subjective. I was happy when I purchased it but now that I understand bitts and pieces of photography, I'm unhappy with its low light photography.

  • I have rarely felt the need to use full 20 x zoom, in these two years. Its definately effective. Moreover the higher the zoom the more you feel the need of a tripod. So superzooms like succesor SX30IS and Fujifilm HS10 do not make me jealous.

I have taken so many lovely picture with this camera and most of them were very much appreciated, that I do not feel to dump it and go for a DSLR.

Good on performance light on pocket
Apr 25, 2009 11:16 PM 1247 Views

I bought this camera last year, February 2008 to be more exact. So now as I have used this a lot, I though of sharing my views on this gadget. So this is not a tech.specs. Review; This review will tell you about my experience with the gadget, its software and some additional information. I hope it'll be useful generically.

Few points to mark it different from the normal point and shoot cameras.

Optical image stabilization.(So it will try to stabilize your picture in cases of handshake but works only horizontally, this is rare for a camera in this budget and believe me it is useful)

4X optical zoom.(mostly cameras comes with 3X zoom)

Manual Control -(So this is again not offered by other and we will be back on this quickly)

please note that this also supports auto mode along with many scene modes.

Nice movie recording capability. VGA at 30 FPS. maximum recording of one hour or 4GB memory.

Support AA battery: you are required to buy AA battery, it is a+ for you or not, you decide. I prefer this as I can use those batteries in other gadgets too, plus they are cheap(250 rs for 2 AA rechargeable batteries 2100 Mah).

So do we need Manual Control at all, well here I want to put an example lets say its low light situation and you do not want to use flash as it destroys the natural colors, but when you clicks it with auto mode, without flash its either too dark or else too blurred. So what is the solution, well the solution is to slow the shutter speed, so that ample light will reach to the lens. So here you maintain all natural colors though it was not a good light condition.

Same trick does not work if the target is moving for example in Pubs or any other happening place, the solution which can be applied here is to raise the ISO, yes it will create some noise in picture but you can make it better than the image clicked with auto mode.(I do not mean auto mode is bad, just saying that its just using some logic inserted in chip and our mind can calculate many other permutations that that).

So manual controls are like added advantage, use auto if you do not want them, but just for those who want too experiment or want to control, there is a low budget camera with manual controls too.I was not aware about all this stuff when I purchased this, just played with my camera and got my basics from few good web links, it actually helps you to improve the image quality.

Optical IS is ok, I mean it’s rare for this budget so it is a god treat to have. Same with 4X zoom its 1X extra than others, and that is it. Its movie quality is good though at same time reception of voice is not at all acceptable. Battery life is good as you use AA batteries, it depends upon the capacity of battery, 2100 mAh and plus is a good choice.

About image quality is quite exceptional but with few exceptions, for example it does not produce exact colors for Red group colors, I mean it does capture them beautifully but it changes the color at bit. Except for this it’s just great, produce good images, nice colors, work flawlessly, it is lot easy to use, I mean it, my son has captured some beautiful images with this. Red eye is a problem as with any camera but the camera software has a red eye removal tool which works perfectly. Only problem I noticed with camera software is it asks about the date and time on every starts, I think it can be fixed with a firmware update but as I purchased this from US(176$ when$ was 39 Rs, WOW), I can not have it here. In India it comes with a 2Gb card and with 2 years warranty.(this is when last may offer and could be changed by now, better check latest from a store).

As for size its not too big not too small, being said that I mean thatyou can not just put it in your pocket like a mobile but you can hang it onyour belt and it is not too heavy.

It comes with a PC sofwtare suits too, which can be used to crop, joint, edit images, I am not covering them in details here.

I guess Icovered enough and it is already become a lengthy review, as a suggestion Ithink one who plans to buy this should look for A720IS too, it got 2X extrazoom than this and is a bit bulky too. Think what you required and make a dicision.

Best ENTRY LEVEL CAMERA !!
Apr 25, 2009 02:05 PM 3429 Views

I bought this camera this Jan.. Till now has given me some excellent value of money. Why you should buy this camera ?

  1. Its an Canon. So no issues with the firmware and other s/w details.

2.10x optical zoom. 40x extended zoom, is the best feature.

  1. Lot of manualoptions, which gives entry level photographers an edge.

4.Image stabilization, This gives an edge to ur images. most needed feature for point and shoot photographs

  1. Battery usage is very minimal.

Folks looking for Sony or nikon. IMO sony is much an point and shoot camera. Lot of features will spoil the durability of the camera, Nikon is good, but not with this range. Other option is to go for Panosonic Lumix. Might be an good option. But very less option available in india. Moreover panasonic not much trusted camera in India.

Conclusion-> GO for it !! value for money

Novice to Expert - A fun for all
Apr 03, 2009 12:56 PM 2950 Views

I was looking for around 8MP with 3X Optical Zoom and smaller in size Digicam. I am no expert in photography but was looking to learn at considerably lower price tag.

Choice was between Canon A590IS, Sony S730 & W110, Nikon L19 & Olympus FE-370 (since with charger + memory card + pouch should be less than 10, 000/-)

So finally came down to Canon & Sony W100. (Sony S730 has Sony Lens with big body, the general reviews about Nikon was is expensive for L19 model with no Image Stab and FE-370 is not recommended for Brightness & Contrast in Sun Photos & Night Photos).

W110 has Carl Zeiss lens with Smile Shutter but 7.2 MP camera. W120 or W300 are expensive. Again with built-in Battery.

Canon A590IS has 8.1MP with 4X Optical Zoom but NO SMILE SHUTTER plus the size is not exactly pocket size. But standard AA batteries so you don't run out of power anywhere

So, finally, I gave in for Canon A590IS for the following :

1) Battery AA

2) Not a Pocket Size but a decent grip on Camera so you can hold it steadily.

3) 8 MP with 4X zoom at price tag of aroud 8K.

4) It has MANUAL feature which no Sony W range digicam has got. You can actually tweak your cam's Aperture, Speed, Flash, Macro, In-camera Touch-up and the Red Eye (sony too have it)

After using for 6 Months, I have found that

1) Parent's to love to operate, so I very sure that the ease of operation is 10/10.

2) Photo Quality is too good for Outdoor as well as Night Mode.

3) The best part is MACRO pics. All those mehendi pics are fabulous.

4) Connectivity to PC also good. 1 Key and photos are downloaded.

Now, few minus points :

1) Battery Life : If you go on continuously using the camera, then virtually you can get around 150 Flash Photos but if you decide to keep the Battery in Camera and leave it there then are asking for trouble. Batteries will go almost overnight. (Although I complained to Service Center nothing could come out of it) So, Enjoy the Camera and don;t forget to remove the batteries as soon as your shooting is over for the day.

"Canon S2 IS" is simply amazing... Go for it...

"Canon S2 IS" is simply amazing A truely worldclass product from Canon I am using it since last one year Very simple to use If you are not used to digi camera then simply put the camera mode to Automatic and click the pictures.

I bought this camera in USA I am a software professional but, this camera tuns me into a photographer in just a less than minute :) It has n number of features I call it as a mini SLR It has a powerful flash even in the stark blackout it takes pictures very clearly it is a classic digi cam before buying this camera.

I did lot of analysis and finally I decided to go for it it has a powerful 12x optical zoom and 4x digital zoom if you combine digital and optical zoom it goes upto 48x zoom which is simply mind blowing few days back I had been to Alibaug & Matheran I clicked lot of snaps and they have come out really good really very good

Go for it

Nice camera overall
Mar 01, 2009 05:50 PM 3596 Views

Bad things first.... The charger Canon gives for free (UNIROSS) started working after 8 months of purchase. I had to buy a new charger because the dealer said the warranty doesn't cover items provided free with the product.

The battery backup is NOT so good. The cells provided, when fully charged, help me click around 40-50 pics with flash on. However, with a pair of dura cell, I took around 70 pics.

The screen size is a bit small. Had it been a bit big, it was a brilliant camera. Rest about the camera, its very good. The picture quality, ease of operation, looks, zoom... all are good. I have been using this camera since last one year... and as far as I remember, only 7-8 pictures got blurred (out of some 1000 pics taken). Zoom is good. You can digitally enhance the 4x optical zoom to give around 16x. Overall, the camera is good and worth the price.

Best Digitial Camera- Canon PowerShot SD950
Feb 28, 2009 02:07 PM 1747 Views

I recently visited USA, and wanted to buy digital Camera for myself. After Lot of research, I fixed to buy Canon Power Shot SD950 IS. I purchased

1) Power Shot SD950 IS

2) Camera Cover

3) 4GB Flash Memory

SPECIFICATION :

Type : 12.1 Megapixel, 1/1.7 inch type Charge Coupled Device (CCD)

ZOOM : 3.7x Optical/4x Digital/15x Combined Zoom with Optical Image Stabilizer

ISO Sensitivity : Auto, High ISO Auto, ISO 80/100/200/400/800/1600 equivalent (Standard Output Sensitivity. Recommended Exposure Index)

The SD950 has a very elegant look with it’s titanium body and fits in pocket

PRONS:

Very easy to use with simple controls/menu, good battery life and with support to lot of advance features. This Camera has amazing Clarity even at 12 MP, but I normally take pictures at 8 MP. Low Light Conditions is really impressive, I compared with Sony cyber shot which was really bad in front for cannon

Supports Face Detection and good Flash light. It can make movies also at much higher resolution 1024 x 768 (15 fps), but clarity reduced at low light conditions

Just connect to computer USB port and copy all pictures required. Adjust ISO according to requirements.

CONS :

-The battery cover opens too easily even while shooting therefore turning off the camera

-Some time red eye problem is observed.

-Movie Quality Not so good

-Date option is only available for passport size, not available when taken in high resolution

-Price : 425$ = 17, 000/- at time of purchase

Superb so far
Feb 28, 2009 12:03 PM 3202 Views

I had been waiting for very long to buy my first camera, and when I finally got my SX110 IS, I could not have been more happy. Decided on canon, not just because of the brand presence, but also due to reco's from lots of people, who had canon's. I first had my eye on S3IS, after which the SX100 IS was released in 2008.

It was crazy over how so much is packed into so little. Ofcouse, the S'X' IS series has more feautre's like swivel LCD and all. But the neat, light SX100 was more value for money. I had to wait till Dec'08 to get the SX110, which was a much cheaper much better SX100.

I have used it both for outdoor and indoor, the clarity with high image resolution is too good. The 3 inch LCD is superb, esp during playback. Sometimes, the images are grainy, with full zoom, but

its more about my shooting than the camera itself I think. I am still new to camera's and will learn with time. I am waiting for my next trip, and hopefully learn more tricks by then.

Will update when I do.

Bought Canon A720 eight months back
Feb 27, 2009 01:07 PM 1370 Views

I had bought this camera 8 months back and I feel really lucky to have this camera. I bought it after going through many camera's on net, reading their reviews and also comparing them.

The build quality of camera is very good. Picture quality is best I have seen in this range of cameras. It has all the auto features as well as most of all the manual features. I am using 2700 mh camera cells and they give me nearly 300 pictures + video on full charge. In these 8 months I have taken nearly 2200 snaps with only 5-6 charge.

Zoom quality is very good. Being 8 mp camera, its prints are really great but more zoom is recommended. Till date I have not found a single problem with the camera except the fact that the software provided with this camera is not up to the mark.

I will certainly recommend this camera to all of you.

Optical View finder with focal adjustments. Very useful for people who use spects. So you need not have to wear glasses to use viewfinder.

EASE OF USE:

If u have already used a powershot camera then its Childs play else it’s better to read manual to get most out of camera. Swivel screen helps you to capture images in different angles with ease.

I already have PowerShot A95 and did not find any difficulty in using SX10IS.Please note that this is high end Powershot camera and do not compare it with EOS and SLR cameras. Some features may compete with those series like resolution and 20x zoom. Remember that this camera is built using CCD and not CMOS.

Auto focus: Good. Its Ultrasound mechanism tries to perform best as possible and we can even adjust focus manually for some special effects.

Flash: A big no. It’s like using a 10 volts torch light as head lamp for Benz car. If you want to take indoor pics then better buy an external flash [with adjustable flash angle]. More over the placement of flash and lens may cause shadow behind subject! Still the built in flash is OKKkk for small enclosures and nearer subjects.

USB 2.0: This is the best feature. USB transfer is very fast. It takes just seconds to copy images from camera. As the camera uses SD-HC memory cards it’s even possible to copy images with some card adapter.

Battery Life: Boss! Its 20x zoom camera with 10mp so what can we expect and that too from Canon? Better to have an extra pack of batteries when you want to use camera for long.

BTW SX10IS needs 4 AA batteries.

Memory: As usual, no built in memory. I am using 8 GB SD-HC card. I really don’t know the upper limit for this.

Swivel Screen: Good, wider than A95. If you want to buy a camera with wide screen then why don’t you go for a 20" laptop with 2 mp built in camera? Ok, it’s your call. My suggestion is to use viewfinder to save battery.

Controls: Well placed control dials. One dedicated video recording button and a button configurable for a shortcut.

Zoom: Very Good. You can see many YouTube videos featuring zooming ability of SX10IS.NOTE: Some things are not as they appear!!

Pic Quality: Very Good and again do not ever compare the quality with EOS and SLRs. Use image stabilizer feature and good lighting.

Face Detection: Yes it detects!

Video Quality: Best in its range.

It coasted me Rs.17, 000/- [ $339 apxly ] when bought in US and it may cost around 22k in India.

One thing is - "Itna paise me itna hi milega[ actually thoda zyada hi mila :) ]".

It's been since Aug'06 i'm using this lovely/beautiful machine! a very good for the beginners, and there-on for those who wish to experiment and try a hand on photography! The camera is a few of those who offer a 4x optical zoom, as of that time, was expensive and had decent freebies wit it to attract me to buy it off shelf w/o a doubt.

Along with the auto mode, it has the program P mode and the manual M mode, and they allow you to take pics as per your choice, and that's a great added adv. Now battery life is something that depends on the battery you use..

For eg, I use a uncross 2300mAh and that helps me shoot good 100 pics with flashlight.. had then got it for 14k, I guess now after almost 3 yrs, it's an obsolete model, nevertheless, a good second hand piece is sure recommended.

Canon works like anything. It's picture quality just fabulous. It is a good device for learning photography. Price is reasonable. Look also attractive compare to other digital cameras. It's zoom in and out facility also very convenient. It is so portable that you can keep it in your trouser pocket.

It's video quality is also good. The facilities like auto play, night shots, kids & pets shots, indoor, beach shots are very good. Even you can take shots when the firework is going on. The light adjustment especially in the sunlight and dark is very well designed. It's facility for adjusting the pictures to Eastman colors is another attraction.

It's shot taken in the beach is really impressive. I can gurantee if any one buying this product will never repent but will be proud.Only thing one need to be careful is do not throw on the hard surface. One can enjoy using Canon powershot A460.

Canon-power shot A580-A dream in HAND !
Feb 09, 2009 12:23 PM 3127 Views

I purchased this camera mainly because it was recommended to me by a top photographer, and after comparing it with all the other brands available in the market like kodak, sony, I decided to purchase canon A580.

I have been using it for the last 6months and this review is based on my own handling of the camera. The camera comes with 1gb sd card, a battery charger and a carry case. It is a 8 mega pixel camera with 4x optical zoom,

It is an easy to handle camera with inbuilt flash , red eye correction and face detection features. The camera can shoot in various modes like portrait, pets&kids, landscapes, night modes, indoor, night scene and standard modes. It is important to set the mode according to the conditions prevailing in order to get good quality pictures. However there are times when the battery is bit of a compromise.

The images captured can be downloaded to your pc with help of a chord, a software comes along with the camera for helping to download and sort images to your pc. Another interesting feature of this camera, which is my personal favourite is to start a slide show

On TV with the help of chord(enhanced images). So it is important to study the various features of the of the camera given in the users manual before using it, I've learnt to use this camera after experimenting with it for almost 1 month and the camera is as GOOD as the person behind this camera. A QUALITY PRODUCT WITH GOOD VALUE FOR MONEY ! HAPPY SHOOTING !!

Your best option for a point and shoot A+++++++++

My husband is a photographer, so when I needed to purchase a digital camera for myself, I took him with me. My main concerns were the following:-

1.Auto and Manual Settings

2.Picture Quality

3.Fast Reload Time

Fast Shutter Speed

This Camera has all of the above. We went to Best Buy to purchase and they had about 50 cameras in this price range and level. It made it overwhelming, but as soon as I picked up this camera, I felt that it was the right one.

I took a few pictures with it and it is super fast on the reload. It takes the picture, shows you the image for a split second, and then is instantly ready for the next picture. It also has a burst shutter so that you can take up to 10 pictures in a burst format where it just takes one after another for a very neat effect.

The other most important thing to me was how quickly the camera snapped the picture after you click the shutter button. I had a camera BEFORE I purchased this one that was horrible. I missed so many pictures because I would click the shutter and it would flicker 4 times before it snapped the pictures and I would loose the shot. When you have kids, pets, or if you want to take action pictures, this is VERY important.

When using this camera, you will hardly be able to tell that there is a lag in the shutter speed. As soon as you click the shutter button, the picture is taken and you have captured the shot. I LOVE this camera for this main reason, and I would not trade it for the world.

Now after those two important criteria were met, my husband started looking at the more technical specs. This camera has a pretty large span of ISO settings. It actually goes lower than my husband's SLR camera. ISO is important if you are taking pictures in a setting where if you use the flash, it can blow out the picture, but you do not have enough natural light to just take it without the flash. For instant, with dogs and cats.

If you take ANY picture of them with a flash, you get these scary glowing eyes, but if you take it without the flash (on autmatic setting) you will get motion blur and a dark picture. When you set your ISO, you are changing the amount of light that is absorbed while the shutter is opened.

So while you are on automatic, the shutter stays opened longer to absorb more light in a dark situation, however, the longer the shutter stays opened, the more chance you have for the subject to move and blur it. The ISO setting will allow you to absorb more light with a faster shutter speed. So you set your ISO to 80 and you can take a picture of a cat running across the living room without a flash and get a nicely clear picture. The only downside is that the lower the ISO, the grainier it can get..However, you will find a happy medium where its not grainy, but you do not need the flash.

You can also adjust the white balance so that when you take a picture of something with white in it, the white does not look yellow or blue. It allows you to automatically set the white balance by choosing a lighting type, or you can use a white piece of paper to set the white balance.

And finally, this is another AMAZING thing to this camera. The MACRO pictures are PHENOMINAL!! If you like to take pictures of flowers and the like, you will love this camera. You turn your flash off, set it to macro (you can choose regular or digital macro) and you can focus up to 1/2" away from your subject. Without a flash, t he images come out amazing!
