Canon Digital IXUS 120 IS Reviews

Digital Ixus 75 -- Highly Recommended
Aug 09, 2008 07:56 AM 6228 Views

To anyone(especially women) looking for a compact purse camera, the Canons are a surefire winner. For guys - just drop them in your shirt pocket. Here's a non-technical run-down.

In India these series of cameras are called Canon Digital IXUS 75, 80, 860 etc. These are under the Canon India warranty so support is assured.

True - there are cheaper cameras than Canon and some are just as nice-looking.

But as far as well-exposed and blur-free'shaadi' and family pictures are concerned, these are very appropriate to the task because of the powerful flashes included. In the daytime they're even better and conserve battery because flash is not required. The amount of good shots from these cameras consistently rate higher than others.

In the Canon pecking order of cheaper to better point-n-shoot cameras,

-'A'series are low-performance budget cameras using AA batteries,

-'IXUS'series is the high-performance'chhota' pocket camera using lithium batteries and

'G' series(with G-9 powershot) is the highest level point-n-shoot with professional features.

I believe the IXUS 75 and 80 are still available at suggested retail of Rs. 14, 000 which means you can get one for say Rs. 12, 500 or thereabouts. This is what I have and what I recommend for people to buy unless budget is a problem.

Beware though that the IXUS 85 and 90 are even smaller at a similar pricepoint but the reviews have not been as good for them. So  IXUS 75, 80 or 860 is what you need :). The IXUS 80 by the way comes in very nice jewel-tone colors for people who want to individualize their purchase. The IXUSseries use special Lithium batteries only available from Canon. Some aftermarket batteries are also available in developed countries. Make sure that the lithium batteries are charged before that special occasion to avoid disappointment.

If budget is an issue then the cheaper A series can be chosen but these are a lot bigger/bulkier.A series suggested retail can be Rs. 7000 to Rs. 9000 for some of the lower-end models(A470, 570 etc.). They'll work just fine but(for you ladies) you can't exactly hide them in a beaded wedding purse.

The G-series(e.g. G9 model) retails at Rs. 30, 000 and contains professional features. It is a bit of an overkill and is meant for diehard photo-nuts. It is superquick, processes RAW files but IMHO most people will do fine with an IXUS 75, 80 or 860 instead.

The secret of the great pictures from a Canon IXUS model is the processing circuit(DIGIC-III) and the excellent image sensor, which though small, does a very good job. The lenses though small are also distortion and aberration free. If you want to get technical - all Geometric distortions, even in wide angle shots, have been minimized.

Canon unlike other companies doesn't cut corners in technical areas to make a cheaper compact camera. Canon's smaller'IXUS' series cameras are typically US$50 more than other Nikon, Pentax and Sony cameras of the same type - but they're worth the extra money. You don't buy a camera everyday - buy a good one.

Your memories are definitely worth it:)

P.S. Some have mentioned red-eye as a challenge. Avoiding red-eye is simply achieved by choosing the relevant flash-mode. The following are all the flash modes for the Canon IXUS 860.

Auto, Auto w/ Red-Eye Reduction, Auto w/ Slow Synchro, Flash On, Flash-On w/ Red-Eye Reduction, Flash On w/ Slow Synchro, Flash Off

Now any mode from above that says'Red-eye reduction' should work(e.g. two modes above

'Auto w/ Red-Eye Reduction' &

'Flash-On w/ Red-Eye Reduction'

which essentially give out a few small bursts of pre-flash before the major flash burst so that peoples' pupils are closed down and red-eye is minimized). With point-n-shoot cameras like these with on-board flash - red-eye is a little hard to avoid but the above modes will help minimize red-eye.

I don't want to get too technical with the other flash modes but this is one feature-packed camera which allows you to use the flash during daytime as well for filling in shadows, read-up on the manual and you'll see that you can do fill-flash(by using the'Flash On' mode)so you can bring out people's faces when shooting against the sun etc.:) Just use the lightning bolt symbol on the right hand edge of the four-way dial(to the right of'function set button' in the middle) and cycle through all the flash modes and find the mode that is the same as the lighting bolt symbol which means'Flash On'mode.

As mentioned above you can also turn off the flash completely with the'Flash Off' mode(i.e lightning bolt with a circle-dash).

Now a few more things about choosing the'right' Canon.

My best choices(again) among the current Canon India point-n-shoot cameras are IXUS 75, IXUS 80 (US market SD-750, SD-800 Digital ELPH) and IXUS 860 IS(US market SD-870 IS Digital ELPH). I own the IXUS 75(among 15 other cameras) and my cousin owns the IXUS 860 IS - so I have first-hand experience with both.

So far I prefer the following features in the latest IXUS models,

  1. Wide angle lens(28mm is good for scenic pictures which the IXUS 860 has)

  2. Separate'push' playback button(IXUS 75, 80 and IXUS 860all have them - playback button on a dial wears out the dial as you switch back and forth)

  3. Face-detection(I believe the latest cameras all have this feature - great for focus accuracy)

  4. Large LCD screen(3" or better)

Please don't be misled by Megapixel claims - higher megapixels don't make for better shots. Trust me. Anything above six megapixel is plenty. Save your money and don't go for the marketing gimmicks for the latest twelve megapixel wonder!  ;)

Hope that helps.

Canon IXUS - superb performance & easy pricing
Jun 07, 2008 10:02 PM 6022 Views

This device packs more than a punch - even if we leave aside the supra-amazing picture clarity (that others like Nikon & Samsung) merely talk about, its form-factor coupled with ease of use are worth the price. One would be enamored of the extremely life-like picture quality and the super steadiness in the shots....even kids can make a hay.

This certainly is the best DSC under the 20K range and comes with a 2 GB memory card and PC suite that makes photo transfers and imaging fun. The lens are sturdily guarded by the exterior fitting and do not appear to be vulnerable at all - what's more, this is available at all leading outlets, with a proper warranty - service from Canon is the best in the industry as I have been a Canon user for 7 years now (this is my 3 rd camera) and Canon has proved that it is delivering superb value in India

Canon IXUS 75 is my paper weight now
Jan 12, 2008 12:56 PM 8295 Views

My camera slipped from just a height of 2  feet. I was stunned that I am unable to switch it on after that. I took to Ashoka timetronics, one and only authorize service centre in Hyderabad, they told that the PCB was gone, which costs 4000 and service charge is 1000 and its worthless to get it done . Now I am using it as paper weight. Warranty doesn't not apply for physical damages it seems. Im leaving my last review as it is. I lost 14000 b4 I haven't printed even 1 snap.

Dear all,

I recently bought canon IXUS 75. I am satisfied with it. Unfortunately I got  it from UK with European warranty (A good for nothing for us). So, I got it for a hefty sum of 14000(with 2 GB SD card and carry case) .

Please dont do this mistake. If at all u want to buy, get it here only..now a days canon is offering it for 17k for 2 years EMI. 700 per month with 1GB Card and carry case .(Offer only on ICICI CREDIT CARD).

The good thing is if u buy in India, you will get international warranty..whereas if u get it from US or UK. you wont get that International Warranty..

Pros:**  7.1 MP, 3" LCD, Sleek in size

Cons:  only 3x zoom., No Image stabilization.Spare battery costs u Rs.2200 and charger costs u Rs.2800.

I recommend CANON SD870 IS(IS for IMAGE STABILIZATION) than this camera..But its available only in US or Japan I guess..The additional features of SD870 are

3.8 X Zoom, 8 MP, IMAGE STABILIZATION, more battery life..

So if u have someone in  US, better to go for SD870 as it is more latest and advanced model to IXUS 75.

Very nice camera from canon
Dec 07, 2007 12:57 PM 4063 Views

I recently bought Canon IXUS 75 from Singapore. While buying I had some doubts but was sure about Cannon products.so finally bought it. And I am very happy with my choice.

It is a very compact and sleek camera with a superb picture quality. Resolution of 7.1 megapixel is also good, shutter speed is also fast. Large display screen makes it more useful to have a good review of the recent shots. Night snapshots came out very nice and many other modes are very useful. Battery life is good and Li-Ion battery makes it light in weight. Looks are also very attractive and i think is the latest model being promoted by canon. Camera is packed with so many features. Also the automation face detection is a great feature and gives extra clarity to faces in a photograph.

I will strongly suggest this product to anybody who is looking good value for money. Very easy to operate and can be by first time users vey easily.

Best camera

Hi All,

I have purchased this camera in the month of mar 2006. This is the only product which I got for myself from US. Though it is a single product i'm feeling proud since i'm having this camera. Since I wanted to have digital camera for my personal purpose I was looking for slim cameras.

Was thinking to get canon / Sony-T series. Up to my knowledge I know that picture quality of canon is so good when compared to others. And also cost was less comparing with Sony cameras.

PROS:

Outcome of taken pictures are very clear.

It is very slim. It can go into pant pockets also (Even girls who wear tight jeans :) )

Many shooot modes are available. So you always get a bring pictures.

Battery life is good.

Shutter speed is good.

anyone can enjoy with shooting in 2.5 inch large display

CONS:

Since it is too slim and small, it is getting heated if you continuously use for some 20min.

because of its slimness none can expect more than 3X optical zoom from slim camera products, I believe. but you have 4X digital zoom into it.

Shanghai China
Canon IXY Digital 4.0 megapixel
Sep 09, 2006 12:05 PM 2362 Views

I got this camera in Japan. In Japan and Korea it is sold as IXY. In other parts of the world we know it as IXUS. You can ge the tech specs online so I will not go into that. This thing is simply marvellous. About the size of a credit card, It has 3x optical zoom (11x digital zoom)...though I would have preferred more of optical zoom. Any way I am no wildlife photographer or the paparazzi. I like to get quite close to my subjects and click away. With a 512 Mb Toshiba SD card, I have been clicking pics everyday since I came to China, its not even full (pics bein standard 1024 x 768 format).

With a USB cable to transfer data to the PC, storage size is no longer an isue with me. Microsoft XP an even my Ubuntu Linux, auto detects the camera and does what is needed. After that you can numerous things with Picasa.

My review....a good value formoney and does not disappoint at all on qality contrary to popular belief.

Just what you would need
Feb 09, 2006 06:20 PM 2442 Views

Exactly what I had in mind, when I set out to buy the camera. I did lot of research and figured out that 5.0megapixel+ ( market has 7.2 and what not..) is not necessary. 5.0 is just too good for your use unless you are a professional.

I surveyed on websites and shops, looked for variuos brands and finally decided on ''IXUS Digital IXUS 50''

Most compact of the lot ( we call it chotu :-) , 3X optical zoom, direct print option, USB....so on...more technical features you can get on websites..I am not writing all that..

The best part is ease of use...if you are a more into photography, you could do amazing things with it, as in change modes...night, sepia, b/w, flash, cloudy, underwater...Bottom line is that a regular user like me would find if convenient to use...view pics in TV, PC..take high quality of print outs.

The other option is the video which was really impressive from the nikon range the shopkeeper compared it with. I was not really particular about the video as I have a handycam.

Comes with default 16MB chip, but in any case you would need to upgrade it to 256 or 512..

The ratings on various websites are perfect 10 ( pixmania.com)

Trust me...its good..

So Small
Aug 28, 2005 07:50 PM 4376 Views

One of the greatest advantages of Digital Camera is its convenience. No more films to load and unload, no more waiting for the roll to complete, no more processing and development time. You Point, Click and Review instantly. But a camera that is so small that it slips easily into your trouser pocket is a step ahead in the convenience factor.

One such Digital camera is the Canon IXUS 50 (SD400). It is a statement of superior digital technology and a masterpiece of convenience. If you are not a professional photographer but need a camera that helps you pursue your photo hobbies then look no further.

Canon IXUS 50 is a digital camera that meets the demands of the ardent customer. I recently purchased this camera after a lot of research and study of different cameras and their models. I was greatly helped by sites such as ''dpreview.com'', ''dcreview.com'', ''dcresource.com'' etc. What was I looking for and how did I choose? After a lot of Internet hours I finally narrowed down my choice to either Canon or Nikon. Finally the choice fell on Canon. How did I do it? Read on below ...

I needed a camera that could meet the following:

  1. A camera small enough to fit into my pocket. A camera that would always be available to click at the same time providing freedom for my hands when not required. Canon definitely had the advantage in this area over Nikon. Nikon cameras used pencil cells which made the cameras thicker in size.

  2. A camera that provided decent quality pictures. I realised that if you are going to view the images on your computer or television screen most of the time then a 3 MP camera will serve the purpose. However a higher resolution camera becomes useful if you propose to take prints. The higher the resolution the large the print size can be. A 5 MP camera would provide excellent quality print of standard size pictures. I finally settled for 5 MP camera. Most of the problems in picture quality faced by these compact cameras are red-eye, purple fringing and corner softness. In the reviews I found the Canon IXUS 50 performance was rated better on these problems compared to Nikon.

  3. Another aspect that was important to me was the quality of the LCD display. A large size display and a better quality in different lighting situation was a must. On this front the Canon camera scored as it had a display of 2.0'' and produced brighter display even in night situations.

  4. A camera that provided some element of manual control. Most of the compact cameras are point and shoot type with very little manual options. The Canon model had the ability to perform white balance metering, exposure control, adjust ISO rating and a few others.

  5. A camera that had good features which I could use. On this front I felt Nikon did have an advantage. Further each brand had its own distinct features. But as Canon had greater advantage on Points 1 to 4 I settled for the Canon features. My color settings, AiAf focus system, a wider shutter speed and Macro range were some of the impressive features.

  6. Canon also had the edge over connectivity. A faster USB 2.0 provided quicker transfer to a PC.

After all the study I chose the Canon IXUS 50. Looking back I believe I made the right choice. The camera is excellent and worth the cost.

As a layman it may be difficult to notice the difference in quality of picture produced by different brands of the camera. Bu in areas that make the difference Canon IXUS 50 stands out. A camera with a better LCD, easy controls and of course all these qualities in a camera that is So Small ...

A wonderful camera - great to look at and use
Apr 22, 2005 01:31 PM 3772 Views

I bought the Canon SD200 which is the equivalent model to IXUS200 in the USA. I carried out a lot of research before buying this camera and I have to say it is a wonderful camera after using it - albiet for a short time.

I set out to buy a camera that gave me 3.x Megapixels as I have found that is quite adequate for most purposes. I did not want a very high-end camera as I already have a Nikon SLR for that. Instead I wanted a very handy device that I could carry around anywhere and yet it gave me good results in most situation.

I zoomed down to three Cameras the Nikon Coolpix 3200, the Canon Powershot A510 and the Canon SD200.

The Nikon 3200 and Canon A510 were quite similar in functionality. The advantage that the A510 had was that it had a 4x optical zoom. But the Nikon was less bulky and had a better Flash. Also I visited many sites that had technical reviews of these models and also had sample snapshots. I found that in terms of picture quality the Nikon appeared to give a little sharper photos.

By this time I was more inclined to buy the Nikon. But then I saw the Canon SD200 and that simply took my heart away. First of all, it is one of the sleekest cameras out there. Very small and fits very easily into your pocket so that you can carry it anywhere anytime. Any smaller and it will get difficult to hold and take good photographs.

It is very easy to use and has very fast response times. Actually some of the other digital cameras will feel very sluggish once you have handled this nifty piece. It has a host of features and there are 2 which are stand out:

  1. It has an awesome video mode, once of the best in digital cameras. It can take 640x480 snippets at 30fps. [But many other cameras offer that...]. What takes the cake is a 60 fps ability at 320x240. It is pretty cool to take some action shots in this mode, you can actually play back in slow motion.

  2. In its segment it has manual control over long exposure, so you can take beautiful night photographs.

Both the above features and its sleek looks were not available in any other camera in its segment or price range.

Well that was the initial research - how was my experience after buying it.

So far so GREAT - is what I have to say (touchwood :-))

All the features work beautifully. I can actually carry it anywhere, in fact I could take a video while I was sitting on an amusement park ride in Six Flags, NJ, USA. Hardly something you can do with a bulkier camera.

And inspite of my initial apprehensions about picture quality (I told you that I thought the Nikon had better picture quality than the A510) - it turns out that the SD200 takes awesome pictures too.

All in all a fabulous and stylish package which is very responsive and all the functionality you can wish for in its segment - and finally that it delivers on its promise.

Compact camera with lot's of feature

I have bought the Canon Ixus 500 digital camera with the 5.0 megapixel. because if it's performance & results I am forced to write a review about this camera. This is an excellent camera, with great results. The camera comes with a 32MB compact flash card, which is not that much sufficient to utilize the 5.0 megapixel results.

Normal I have great results with the 1600x1200 & superfine settings of the picture , but then you can store only 19 pictures in the 32MB. So I just bought a 512 MB flash card, now I am happy. The Other thing which I realized is the battery power, so if you really want to buy a digital camera, don't forget to add the overhead cost of the extra battery pack + the memory card, because these are the nessecity of a Digital camera. I have bought it in germany trip, I was afraid about the waranty, but till now ''touch wood'', it is working like it should be.

One of my friends has a sony digicam as well Sony DSCp73 with 4.0 Megapixel, but that camera is bulky & doosen't look good. The people who are not interested for the looks & want to use pencil batteries can go to sony, but I recommend the canon Ixus series. Plus you get the 100Mb web space to upload you images on the canon gateway, you just have to enter the serial number written on your camera, and then you can sahre the snaps with your friends. The camera comes with lot's of software. which has every thing, red eye reduction, photo editing tools, drivers, link to canon gateway, slide show everything you need to do with the images.

The interesting thing is the photo stiching, in my trip to paris I used this photo stiching utility, you have to set you camera to the photo stiching mode & then camera shows in which direction you have to take the snap and from where, then use this software and it will automatically stich all pictures. Of course if you are professional you can change the settings & so on where to stich etc. But this is really useful when you travel, you can have really the memories of your trip.

Go Digital

I am having Canon Digital Camera, model S100 which is quite good. I am very much satisfied on its quality prints. So far I have taken picture in all types of light conditions and I got good results. Design of camera is also very attractive, sleek. Zoom is 4X, but it requires tripod otherwise pictures you get are shaky or may be out of focus. Bad part is that one has to buy camera cover (pouch) separately which should be free with the camera. Easy to carry with its battery charger and spare memory chip. I am fully satisfied with the camera and I recommend it to all.

Canon should provide higher memory flash card with the camera as 8mb card is not sufficient. Now Canon have introduced another models which are also very good. Digital camera is really cost effective. Camera is having many features. It is having user friendly menu. So that we can select any option very easily.
