Scooterettes as a class began with the Bajaj Sunny. At that time(years ago) many had doubts about this class. But definitely I had great faith in the future of these scooterettes. But then the sub-35cc class died or rather was murdered- by the government, who else? Again I was wrong. Man proposes, government disposes. What can you do?
But people did. And how? TVS is laughing all the way to the bank because of the Scooty. Bajaj Auto is all Zipped up for their spirit is roaring with sales. With all this spirited activity, could LML be far behind? No way. LML has long been coming- in this category that is – and indeed it came with a bang in the form of a superlatively good-looking scooterette aptly named Trendy!
Honestly, I don’t know why the Y is there. Just Trend would have been perfect. Because it was a start for a new kind of trend. And if looks are what trends are all about, then it is time to take a long hard look at this one, the LML Trendy.
It is evident that much market research has gone into defining this Trendy. For one, electric start is standard, even though kick-start also exists- this is a sure-fire hit with the females. Also in these days of Labour Saving Device, even with the males of the “not-yet-adult” category. Not to speak of the gran-paws and the gran-maws who haven’t the strength to kick-start the bike. For another the stepney is optional, which again is very scientific(why make it a standard fitment and pay excise duty when nobody uses it anyway?).
Consumer conveniences are abound. A lockable glovebox up front under the handlebar to tuck away your valuables. A detachable utility basket just below the glovebox. A generous floorboard for your toddler. A bag hook and a rear carrier. What more does one need in a utility class bike such as this?
Technically, there is a bikini fairing above the headlamp which gives it a trendy look. A single rearview mirror on the right gives you a peek at who is creeping up on you. Turn indicating blinkers are built into the body work in true LML style rather than the ugly protuberances usually found on this class of vehicle. A grabrail at the rear end of the seat completes the picture.
For locomotive power, the Trendy is moved by a single-cylinder, two-stroke, 60cc, force air-cooled engine which develops a power of 3.5 bhp. The torque and power is excellent and more than adequate for this class of vehicle. Having a tubular chassis on a good enough wheelbase, the Trendy weighs just over 70 kgs. Electrics are powered by a 12 V, 65W flywheel magneto and headlight power is 25 watts.
The suspension of the vehicle is in the college region and is good enough for an average college goer. It certainly can’t give the kick, a bike gives, but certainly would bring a glee on the face of the rider. Riding comfort, as far as I am concerned is okay and probably the best in its class. Other features are just as it is for an average scooterette.
The best part of the Trendy is its price. In spite of being so good looking, it is priced at just Rs.20,500 on road. Giving an average mileage of 45 kmpl the scooterette challenges the TVS Scooty. Though it can’t near that marvel, certainly with its new looks can give a run for its money. So if there are any college goers who want a bike that goes by the new trend then you must be going for Trendy.
