Old but gives a good idea for new scooters

Kinetic Honda was not available nowadays, though you can buy it second hand or various other sites that provide used vehicles. But Honda's Kinetic gives user a best experience of both smoothness of engine and gear less ride. My dada ji had this scooty with him, but now it was sold and I had also spent some tie riding this scooty.

It was launched at 1984, with a 2 stroke 98.0 cc air cooled engine that provides 7.8 ps of maximum power and 9.8 Nm of torque. It comes in petrol version and has auto-kick start as well. This has 6 liters of fuel capacity and weighs around 99.0 kg only.

Loved to ride this scooty and have lots of memory with my grand old parent sitting behind and roaming in the market.

Good experience about it.

I too had a 95 model black Kinetic Honda.I have a lot of memories associated with it. It was my first 2 wheeler.

It served us really well. Its mileage was a bit low though. When I moved to Bangalore, it started gathering dust in my home town and my parents decided to sell it off. I tried hard to convince them against selling it, but they never understood my sentiments.

I almost cried when my parents told me that they sold it for a meager Rs 5000.Even though I currently have a Yamaha RXZ and Hyundai i10, the Kinetic Honda will always be my first love.

Uncomfortable ride
Feb 17, 2016 03:36 PM25100 Views (via Android App)

We bought this scooty 5 years ago and the reason to buy it was dropped price due to the competition in the market and it looked like an ideal ride for me and my father as we don't have to ride much to get to work or to the market.

But the scooty is not good at all and is very uncomfortable to ride. Also the built quality is not upto the mark. I dropped it once from skid and it had a Crack as if it had a major collision accident and cost me for the service.

The scooty weighs almost 100kg and sometimes it is really not easy to control it also while riding. The handling is really stiff and takes and effort to ride. Something that I really don't like at all as atheist handling should be good.

The suspension has a same story and you will feel every bump of the way and its not even to ride it in the streets. Its also not very powerful, it does a lot of struggle to get to high speed and its a risk to take this scooty on a highway as it cannot keep up at all.

It only gives an average of 40 and that is also not very consistent sometimes its just 32.

Overall not a really good scooty you should consider as there are better option also available in the market right now. Not a ideal scooty and not comfortable.

Disadvantages of dx
Apr 25, 2011 02:57 AM26833 Views

Yes it is right that kinetic dx does not gives a good millage. but there are many more problems like:(1) It gets very hot in a few minites.(2) the suspension is not good.(3) the handling is worse.

It has a two stroke engine which will not give proper accel. speed. thats all. I just have to say that when bought new kinetic dx is perfect but not good when it is too old.

I am having this scooter from past 8 years and till today it works fine.it always used to carry 100 kg of packages every day .one day I had to take 10 meter auto wire to distance of 15 km.each wire weights around 10 kg.i took 20 wires.and middle stand was almost down touching the road.

But I was shocked to see that this vehicle took myself(96kg) and the packages  without even breaking down.the hand bar was moving left and right ...if it was some other vehicle it would have surely stopped...it can even tow a bigger car tooo. only the problem is its body style .till today it gives me a mileage of 35kmpl..

My dream scooter
Jun 19, 2005 12:52 AM29227 Views

Kinetic has always been my favourite scooter. I like it's styling, the way it's engine sounds besides other things. you may think I might be crazy calling this scooter stylish but seriously could u expect a scooter of 80's to look like this? well I fell in love with this scooter when I was 6 yrs of age since my dad had it and today I own it for myself!

COMFORT AND STYLING: This scooter is very comfortable, be it the seating or the leg rest, everything is perfectly placed and it doesn't even spare tall guys like me(i mean in comfort)! when speaking about styling I must say that any person sitting in this scooter won't look odd or something like that, kinetic kept in mind the varying body sizes when they designed this scooter! it suits everyone, be it a youngster or some old guy!

TRANSMISSION: just a variator, no gears, no hassles! best for ladies who find it troublesome to change gears frequently.

TANK CAPACITY,SPEED AND MILEAGE: Fuel tank capacity is a good 7 litres. that means u can go to far off places without worrying about the tank being empty! This scooter can take u to speeds exceeding 70kms/hr with ease! I don't know about the safety u get for this speed because I hav not experienced driving at this speed! it's just my friends saying! Mileage is an important factor to be considered when talking about vehicles and this scooter gives u around 35-40 kms/l which is good according to me. However mileage depends on the way u drive and the condition in which u have kept ur vehicle. If u want better mileage then I recommend u to service it atleast once in two months, then just see the increase in mileage!

FINAL VERDICT: A good scooter for all ages. so if ur planning to buy a scooter then think about this one because it promises to give u troublefree rides for the years to come!

Satisfied ... yet there are cons
May 26, 2005 11:43 PM25510 Views

My kinetic is old. and i/family has done 22k on it.

So it seems I can review this product well.

1) Power: You cannot expect much from an automatic scooter... can u? But yet this one gives u 1% more than enuff.. and if u r female it gices u lotz of power . dont worry.

2)Fuel efficieny: 6 yrs down ... it gives me 31-33 kmpl. Thats I wud say ok with me.. it used to give a bit more . but old is old.

3) Styling: No where near the scooterettes of the day ... yet it was 'then' a queen mann...

I dont ride a scoterette for the style ...

4) Maintanence: Its a reliable machine as long as you service it once in four months .. I would say .. checking tyre pressure---evry week... chking battery ... evry month.. do all these and mann u hav a pucca bike

5) Speed: It gives 70+ with pillion... But its extremely advisable not to speed .. its highly unstable at >50kmph...Its not designed for speed .. if u wanna hav speed take a karitzma.

Especially if ur last service was 6 months back a few hundred screws and nuts will rattle abov 5okmph..

6)Comfort: nowhere near the days standards ... but yet it does not give u backaches for short to medium commutes.

Safe and comfortable

Let us review this vehicle based on what one has to look for in a scooter. Safety, comfort, after sales service, and economy. I owned Kinetic Honda DX scooter for six years.

Let us look at first safety, which should be the paramount factor for purchasing a two- wheeler. In my view, this scooter has much better balance than those with their engine mounted on one side. It is common sense that better balance is the most important factor in determining the safety of a two wheel vehicle. Better balance also reduces the scope for skidding to one side when sudden brakes are applied in an emergency situation.

I found this practically, I skidded and fell down from the scooter when I applied sudden brakes while going at about 45 Kmph on my Chetak on a clean (no sand on the road) dry road in Delhi. In a similar situation at a higher speed my Kinetic did not skid on a slightly wet road. The second reason why the Kinetic is a safer vehicle is its superior suspension. Good suspension, besides providing comfort to the driver, keeps good traction on the road and makes driving safe.

Next issue is comfort. Kinetic is in a different class in this respect. It has no gears. This makes a lot of difference when you have to travel is a stop and go traffic. There is no need to operate the clutch and change gears; I got blisters on my hands within a few weeks after I began riding my first scooter a Chetak.

As indicated above the suspension is good and my 30 km daily commute never made me feel tired. The vehicle has both kick start and self start; again gives a lot of advantage when the vehicle stops in the middle of the traffic or at a traffic light ? you do not have to get off the vehicle and kick start. The seats are better designed and comfortable particularly to the pillion rider.

After sales service at the time I owned the vehicle was definitely not as good as what was possible for a Chetak; any mechanic could fix a Bajaj. Kinetic requires gentle handling. But the need to visit a mechanic is much less. In fact I found the vehicle very reliable ? did not have to visit mechanics except for regular service.

Economy. Kinetic is more expensive to maintain. Although I did not find much difference in fuel economy compared to a Chetak, spares parts are expensive. Then one has compare the additional cost with the difference in ride quality, convenience and safety. Overall I feel Kinetic gives value for money though not the cheapest one to keep.

Now let us look at other issues. I used to use this scooter to go from my newly developing colony to the nearest town. There was no road for a couple of kilometers. I never had problem in doing cross country alone; it used to take the rough, but not when my wife was on the pillion seat. Since the body is low, with a pillion rider, it used to hit the ground when I tried to jump the scooter across small the bunds you find in open agriculture fields. One has to be careful about this issue while going on a bumpy road with a pillion rider.

The second issue is with the silencer, it has to de-carbonated periodically. I did not know this; and after running some 7,000 km one day it refused to start. I pushed it a couple of kilometers to a mechanic. He simply punctured the silencer and started it to demonstrate to me what I should have done to start it when the silencer got clogged. De-carbonating should be done as required to have good fuel economy.

Its battery requires care; periodically acid level has to be checked and topped up. Topping up is a delicate operation as the battery has very small openings.

Glove compartment is quite small; one need a basket in the front but that can cause problems if you are a tall person

I never had a puncture on the front wheel; fixing that could be problematic.

Overall, on balance, I feel buying it is a value for money proposition. A very convenient vehicle for women.

''You could join me for a ride''. I told my friend Kavitha one Sunday morning. ''I am going upto Besant Nagar''. She was fast to change and come along, when we noticed one more close pal coming up towards us. ''Where are u guys off to?'' ''There is only room for two'', Kavitha said. - ''Not, before we try in my scooter'' I said.

We were so comfortable in my Kinetic Honda. It was a not so crowded signal. The police constable saw me. Then peeped Kavitha. He smiled. Then peeped Shony. He gaped in wonder. ''Three of you'', he yelled. I had already begun apologising much to the irritation of my friends. Luckily the guy left us without any fine!

Kinetic Honda - Its a super machine. I can never how helpless and handicapped I would feel without that machine. I own one of the first models of KH. I had bought it in 1987, but then the machine still lasts like new. Ofcourse, my maintainance adds to it. I love the machine so much that I also take care of it like my Baby!

The mileage has never been as issue. With the crazy inflation in Petrol Prices, my machine has always been supporting me with efficient running that throws light on excellent mileage. I am so happy with it.

The tyres - It gives you an unthinkable grip. If the machine is able to tackle my 70 km/minute with the sudden brakes so well - The credit to the tyre grip.

The seating space is so ample. Imagine if six bums are able to accomodate without much fuss for some long distance touring also - No Complaints!

Go for it - Style & Comfort - All Put it one - Kinetic Honda

Yes a good

Vehicle no doubt about Kinetic Honda DX.

After experiencing with this vehicle for a decade these are the following I've noticed :

  • The original Kinetic Honda DX, half things collaborated from Honda, was a geniune good vehicle. Unfortunately Kinetic wasn't doing a good business at that time, by the time it was popular, they relaunched with ''STYLE'' called ZX. That was one of the tricks which not many of them noticed. The ZX is not bad, but, it is not as good compared to DX model.

  • Talking negative, excluding the mileage, the fuel injection system is a major draw back. It has a pump which is not reliable and often troubles. Again, it depends upon the maintainance, well maintained vehicle doesn't troubles much. Next is the light weight, you have to experience driving on windy seasons, oh my!!!, the vehicle looses its little stability when driving against the wind. Also, the vehicle's body behaves like KB100, due to the engine's weight and light body, the body cannot withstand the vibration of the engine, so over a period of time, the vibration increases due to engine as well as body. The whole body becomes shaky. Believe me, over & above this, ZX is bad when compared with the engine. The latest on Y2K is still worse, since they've reworked on the engine to give mileage, which has spoiled the engine too.

  • Talking Positive, believe me, the very best engine can outbeat the pickup of Rx100!!!, add weight, keep adding, add more, still more, the vehicle still keeps steady, absolutely no problem. Believe me the pull of the vehicle in the uphills is simply superb. The auto transmission is amazing and does well above 60. Honda has made a perfect balance of this vehicle to deliver a good steering and a good room space in the front, the extra foot rest for pillion is really good idea. Especially for women, the auto choke and fuel injection is good.

My Opinion : Not a bad vehicle if maintained well...but my vote for KH is towards DX only.

Good for city driving
Dec 05, 2002 12:37 PM27819 Views

This one is for those who want comfort and hassle free driving.. I recently bought a second hand and quite satisfied with it.

First who should be using it.

1) guys who don't worry too much about style..(if u, better go for a bike)

2) guys who would be mostly driving on crowded streets.. it is quite useful there as u don't have to bother about the clutch and gear business.

3) If you happen to be generally carrying something like a bag or other stuff.. it makes carrying things much easier (cud be a big pain on bike) u can put / carry most things easily on the foot board

4) if you r not too concerned about the mileage (expect max 40 types that too only with the recent models, the Y2K series scores better on mileage)

Now some disadvantages...

a) as I said earlier its low on mileage.. but I guess it does not make that much of a difference.. at 40 KMPL its a good trade off between comfort and mileage.

b) Its quite expensive when it comes to maintenance.. the spare parts are costly and need attention more than some other vehicles...specially in cold weather u have problems with auto start.. regular servicing at quarterly interval is like a must..

c) Risky for fast driving.. Given its small size of the wheels it is vulnerable to skid. Avoid driving this during rains.. Don’t use brakes if u r driving above 45 types..

overall I would say driving this is quite a pleasure and worth the small disadvantages...

Kinetic Kinematics

For a city big enough, extending in 5-6 km radius any two-wheeler is a one of the necessity. For example take Pune city. Certainly it is a big city than 5-6 km radiuses. There the Municipal Bus transport is not that efficient. Buses are in bad condition, frequency of commutes is low and to add to it horrible six seaters make it worse. So you really can’t rely on local transport. Even to go to a movie theater you may need to travel kilometers. In Mumbai Train service is very convenient and Bus service is very good.

In city like Pune 2-Wheeler becomes a must. It is well understood by Puneites. You will see 2-wheelers in very big quantity in Pune. Pune also comes in one of the top most heavily pollutes cities. That’s beside the point.

If you are a starter then learning a gear-equipped bike takes a time and effort. To bypass the problem you have bikes or Scooters like Kinetic Honda, TVS Scooty and a lot more in the market. It doesn’t take much to learn and drive these Scooters. Just get the hold of accelerator and brakes and there you are cruising along the congested roads, dodging people and road bumps and even craters sometime.

The Design of the Scooter is not groundbreaking or iconoclastic. It looks more or less like a proper Scooter. In fact we call them Scooterettes. One of the distinguishing characters is the weight of the bike. They are very light compared to Motorcycles and easy to handle. The button start adds to the convenience. But after some time the ignition system starts to wear out and frequently you have to rely on the good old kick-start. Kinetic Honda is suitable for shorter commutes. Also at high speeds Scooter is unstable. Though this stems from the design of the scooters and small Wheelbase.

The grip of the small tires also makes it worse in rainy season. Skidding is inevitable at high-speed turnings. It is very dangerous to drive KH at high speeds. A 90 cc engine can make a double seat ride on up slopes impossible. A single seat riding should however be smooth and easy. Weight of the bike is 98 Kg, which is about 20 kg less than an average Motorcycle. Fuel tank capacity is 7 liters. Mileage of the Scooterrett is sound it gives above 50 kmpl.

I have a complain about the weak body structure of the Scooter. The material used for covering is very weak. It is fairly easy to get dents and even major damages in case of minor accidents. What I like most of the machine is sleek handle panel with a head light and 2 signal light. The handle width is extended till the base making it cool in looks.

Overall this Scooterett seems to be designed by keeping in mind the convenience and simplicity. Maintenance shouldn’t be a major problem (Battery recharging is required)

Kinetic Honda DX is prized around 41000 Rs. Improved version of DX Kinetic Honda ZX is also available in the market with few additions.

Good for housewives
Sep 03, 2002 10:23 AM26951 Views

Kinetic Honda DX was my second vehicle, which I still use for about 6-7 years now.

I understand that Kinectic wanted to scrap this model when they launched Kinetic marvel, but they could not do it due to its immense popularity. It is still in production with many improvements in engine, suspension & looks.

KH DX is 100cc, variamatic drive and used to give an average of 25-30km/litre, recently I have not checked it.

The front leg space is very useful to keep luggage or to accomodate a nice expensive silk saree of the lady who drives it. Thus very well liked by housewives & even young crowd.

The earlier models had very low chasis and thus the scooter invariably bumps on every speed breaker in the city. The wide seat is comfortable for pillion rider and suspension is also OK. The scooter rides smooth at higher speeds over 50kmph, but not without a helmet.

The body starts rusting at mud guards and footrests. The lighting is good, the horn is good too.

The new variants must be much improved than the one which I have.

Let me read some reviews on them at MS, if they are there.

It Takes a Man to ride this one!!!!
Sep 03, 2002 10:23 AM26974 Views

Hi,

congratulations! ''coz if you are reading this...then we both share the same passion...the Kintetic Honda DX!

Well, Here's someone who's male, 24 and a much eligible bachelor living in Mumbai who loves his Kinetic and feels massive pride in calling it the bike of his life. Believe it or not, My KH-Dx is the best thing to happen to me in Mumbai...apart from the glamour world of course!

No matter wher I have to go and what time it is...My Kiney takes me there, on time, on the double and within the secured parameters of safety. Many people tend to writeoff the Kiney as a bike 'ONLY' for the fairer sex...Well, I would not contest that school of thought, provided that ''ONLY'' be removed from the previous sentence!

And if you think i'm exagerating, spare a moment...

  1. My Kiney gives me 45 kms per litre

  2. My Kiney has the best pickup on any given signal that i've seen so far...on ocassions, there have been better bikes though.

  3. I met with an accident three weeks ago...rammed head long into a Maruti Esteem in the wee hours of the morning below the Bandra bridge...and that too at a speed of 60kmph...and this is all that happened...

  4. I had one bruise on my elbow (2cms)

  5. 1 bruise on my ankle (2cms)

And this is what happened to My Kiney...

  • Both the indicators on the front panel including the frame kicked the bucket, but the head light lay on and still is...

  • The front tyre's rim developed a swelling, but was put at ease with a hammer...

Yes, that's all that happened...I got up, had a look at my darling (Kiney), kicked it start and zoomed off and till today haven't been to the mechanic. Those who want to verify can mail me, I've still not got the front panel fixed...my Kiney still gives me 45kmpl and I'm still the leader at any signal...

AND YES, MY KINEY'S 8 YEARS OLD AND I'M HER SECOND SPOUSE!

Everything's not hunky dory though...My darling tends to slip on slippery roads as she's got a heavy rear...but that's precisely why I said, ''It Takes a Man to ride a Kiney!''

Title : Back to Earth.

Review : I was having a kinetic Honda Scooter since 1996 in Jaipur. Then one fine morning in 1997 I thought it is not giving a good average so I shall sell it and buy another one.I gave an advertisement in newspaper for sale and I found many people right in the morning reaching my house.I was so delighted and sold the scooter for Rs.15000/- which ran only 5000 km.Few months after I went to Jodhpur for my Post Graduation, there the roads were very narrow and my real trouble started. There I was not at all comfortable with a kick and start scooter.I was disappointed and thought for a new Kinetic. The new one was around 35 and the earth ran away from my feet.I just tried the man whom I sold my scooter whether he was willing to sell back to me even at higher price. My all efforts went in vain and finally I bought a new one which is still with me and today I really do not think to have a another one. I bought this vehicle because we Indian working women used to wear sarees and there is no problem while starting it which is not possible in other scooters. My driving experience with Kinetic are marvellous and excellent as it has never troubled me right in the middle of the road. I feel all working women, girls even elderly ladies should buy this product though I found it is popular among men also as my husband also drives when he is not driving car. Even those going for long drives outside the city area upto 50-60 km feel comfortable as it is very comfortable.

*the* kinetic honda
Aug 07, 2002 05:44 PM24213 Views

Hmmm... interesting. in about 9 years, I have owned two kinetic honda vehicles, and the second vehicle is still with me.

the first - it clocked around 47,500 km in just over 3 years, and I disposed of it as I was looking out for a manual transmission vehicle - bought the lml vespa select (but that's another story). three years into using the vespa, I wanted to get back to the good old trusty kinetic, and bought the second vehicle - identical to the first, except for year of manufacture.

both vehicles came with excellent world-class components - failure rate is very minimal, despite the clutch and variomatic transmission almost always overused. a major advantage is that you do not need to fiddle around with gears on a two-wheeler - driving is extremely effortless.

the one single disadvantage I see is that of its low chassis height - makes driving on speed bumps very 'gnashy'.

this is one scooter that needs almost no maintenance - just stick to the published service schedule, and you're set for years.

driving - you've got to be very careful - the only interface between man and machine is the throttle and needs to be very carefully nurtured. at 20kmph, it shifts gears (you feel the engine noise difference) and if you're doing all your driving at this speed, your economy goes for a toss.

i haven't had any problems with mileage - the first scooter gave me about 52kmpl city / 57kmpl highway; the second is about 48kmpl / 55.

a little problem, though - kinetic no longer has their technical tie-up with honda (and honda has anyway gotten into india in a big way with the activa / today), and all kh vehicles manufactured after 1998 do not carry the original honda japan stuff - everything is indigenous. these guys have changed the silencer design, the vehicle's a lot lighter, and it somehow just doesn't feel the same.

would not recommend it now, though - refer last paragraph.

imho.
