Hi, am 30yrs old, working in a bank. So far I was using car for my official and personal use. Since the traffic has become headache in Chennai, like to go for a bike.I would like to know Thunderbird driving comfort in city and quality of the shock absorbers. I had back pain couple of years back. So I am too concerned about quality of shock absorbers, pls clarify.I am impressed by the bike by its majestic look and beat. I comes to know from friends maintenance is heavy. I have seen few thunderbirds, which have crossed 20, 000 plus Kms. Pls advice will it be ok to buy over 20, 000Kms crossed bike.

Vinoth

Royal enfield addicted
Mar 24, 2010 03:41 PM 14721 Views

As the owner of the thunderbird twinspark, i hereby share my experience, feelings and attachment regarding the design and manufacture of high quality, which earned reputation, goodwill and become the pride of Indian bikes.

In the year 1985 i purchased the bullet standard from company's own show room madras motors, darya ganj Delhi, in just rs.18, 900/= i was very much crazy to buy the bullet from my childhood, but there was some problems only leakage of oil from engine side, i sold that in 1990 that was dbt 2277 after the gap of years its image never faded in my mind and last year 2009 my son bought his Yamaha, hence i got the chance to ride that one, but from the core of my heart in this sun set years of my life once again i decided to purchase royal enfield and on 17th march, 2010, i fulfill my dream and purchased

Thunderbird twinspark (red) of rs.1, 02523/- from lamba enterprises, tilak nagar, new Delhi and till today i have not got registration no. But i love my bike and thanks to my god. In this short period i have not 2 much experience but i am satisfied with all the performance. Some are drug addicted but i am royal enfield bike addicted (is it called addiction?),

Where i can get the treatment of this addiction, i think just in the family of royal enfield.

Well after the research of months and going through reviews all over the internet and friends, I finally got my tbts on 07/07/09. it costed me 1.03 lac on road delhi with alloy wheels and leg gaurd. I have completed 2000 kms with this beauty and I find it suitable to write a review.

in short I would like to mention important things for which reviews are most read.

the good ones.. power is amazing and bike stands out itself at any redlight or parking. Not a single day passed when nobody at a traffic light asked something about this wonder. Seating is best for ride of hours. comfortably seats two for long hours.

In city traffic of delhi it gave mileage of 48kmpl provided its not speeded beyond 60. beyond speed of 80 kmph it gave worst economy of 41kmpl. breaking is excellent never lets you down.

the bad ones...

Silencer is longer than the bike and goes way beyond rear wheel.it may look cool to some but it hit any pothol and mine actually broke after hitting one elevation. Service centre and dealers are not giving best of services. especially lamba entrerpr.. at tilak nagar delhi. RE people shoud actually look into this matter.

crome areas started rusting just in 45 days

vibrations atr a bit awkward initially but probably its part and parcel of a 350 cc engine

final verdict

bike is real fun to drive and I would suggest it as best cruiser bike provided one is willing to pay one lac price tag. no other bike gives 21ps power and a mileage nearing 50kmpl.

enjoy riding and wear helmets..bcz marzi hei aapki kyoki sir hei apka..-:)

*update 20/11/2009

*well I have finisher around 5200 kms on my tbts. and find it suitable to update my review of tbts

*good part

performance is good*

engine has become smoothened and vibrations are nominal now

i drive around 120 kms a day and still pick the keys of my tbts with same zeal as if its the 1st time.every ride is very refreshing and no fatigue at all.

i find the slightly dull thump better (although many might disagree who might be lovers of roaring thumps) as I feel unnecessary sound creats extra vibrations which I personally dont like.

now I am driving it btw 70 to 100 kmph most of times (obviously when roads allow) therefore getting 40 kmpl mileage most of times. but last time when I checked the mileage moving steadily at 50-60 kmph for around 180 kms it came out as astonishing 54kmpl.

BAD ONES

Poor support of service stations continues and is a major concern which RE people must take care seriously. there is lack of professionalism in these service people. or I might be wrong in comparing the servicing care provided by maruti people(my car) and RE. Some strating trouble in cold mornings. Rusting of chrome annoyed me after this rainy season but it was well taken care with 20 RUPEES nickle powder work. now it looks as new as a new born.

Its a cool Bird
Jun 22, 2009 04:07 PM 8646 Views

I am a bullet FAN from my childhood, as I hase grown seeing my dad driving Bullet. from the day I decided to buy a bull my only worry was the features which were lacking on RE like a Fual indication, tachometer and disk brake. from reviews and from RE web site I was excited about RE's UCE technology. the moment it was lounched I had alook at it.

Again I was sad with its un finished looks on the iol case and engine cover. same day I wished any day RE changed this looks I will become a proud owner of RE. Atlast I found the latest chromed TBTS, with all good features like Automatic chain tensioer, 6 plate clutch, TDi Ignition and the cool self start and finaly I ride a TBTS now. the vibration levels are cut down. the 20BHP engine is more sensible at highways. touches 80 in a fraction.

My TBTS!
Apr 06, 2009 10:33 AM 13901 Views

I got my Thunderbird Twinspark (Black) on 28th Aug 2008. When I Just finished 1900 kms, nothing much about the issues, except a little Front right fork oil leak - Service guys fixed it.Overall it’s an amazing experience. First, this bike is a head turner and Everyone is asking me about the bike where ever I stop. I am a first time RE product buyer and I didn’t expect such a good response from others. Overall I am very happy about the vehicle, though I found few issues.

  1. The gear shift is not smooth, you cannot expect it to work as a Pulsar or an Unicorn. Initially it was difficult for me to change gears, but I am fine with that today. Probably the reason is, I am driving any bike after 9 years. It has amazing pickup, revving up greatly, I must say that the vibration is almost nil behind the seats, but there is bit vibration can be felt in the handles.

The sound is not so great; I believe it has to go miles for the engine to come to form. Probably after 500 kms and the first service it should improve.Few things missing are a central lock. There is a separate lock for the neck. Also the silencer is lengthier than the bike - which I didn't like. I may change it after 5000 Kms.I drive very less, probably 100 kms a week, so I didn't bother much about the maintenance. But as this is an all new engine, there is only one Service man is available in Coimbatore.

I do not think any other service firm can touch this TBTS, it will take some time for them to learn, though the mechanism is simplified. For the first time bike buyers, you still need to wait for 2-3 months, for better feedback about the vehicle - If you are keen on mileage, maintenance and service. But if you has a passion about RE products, this is the time to start, and this is the bike to buy first.I do not think there is another cruiser vehicle is available like this in India can match with this. Its road presence is completely giving me great confidence; the breaks are sharp and easy to ride.

You can drive this like a 100CC bike, but for thin guys – it would be difficult for you to handle it initially. You will burn more calories to move when the engine is switched off. After 1000Kms I changed the Silencer for better beat, and I believe I am half way through - Better than the 6ft original silencer. However, due to the engine changes classic RE riders will loose its original Rytham, sad thing is you can not bring the beat with any modification to your satisfaction. I will probably will write another review after 5000kms, which should give a better insight, and I will write bit more organized. My Son (7yrs) likes the bike much more than me, he is even more attracted by classic 350, which is owned by one of his classmates dad. :-)

Thunderbird TwinSpark
Feb 12, 2009 05:11 PM 15863 Views

Last couple of weeks I have gone fida over the new Thunderbird Twinspark. At Rs.1, 02, 500/- (Onroad Cochin Price), I feel they charged a 'bit' for their 'ROYAL ENFIELD' brand value!

Well last 10 years or so I have been a pure Bajaj rider with Kawasaki 4S being my first bike then moving on to Pulsar 150 and then the newer DTSi 150. What indians basically look for is mileage as the first criterion and then the power, looks although as a bare minimum as well!

Royal Enfield has always had admirers in its own ways. For the very reasons I have disliked it! See how can u allow some freaky 100cc bikers to fly past u just like that ? Then comes the low mileage, higher maintenance (or rather more caring required).Thunderbird Twinspark (TBTS) was born to change all these for ever.

Firstly the change in design -

UCE engine which we all know by now which features TwinSpark technology similar to pulsar in many ways ;) . Next the biggest factor - mileage. YEAH such a heavy (182kgs to be precise) bike gives approx 45 mileage! And tell you what I know some one who got 50+ in long drives. It is a wonder buy! Add to it the amazing pick up. ALL BULLETS till date had one thing in common - Bullets ride you rather than u riding a bullet! But this one is different!

POWER - At 19.8 bhp its a sec quicker than the old leanburn thunderbird in 0-60.

PICKUP - TBTS has an amazing pick up. 0-60 in just 6 secs man its fast! (Unicorn is 5 +secs FYI). And I feel it should touch 100 in under 20secs. Once the bikes revs up beyond 4000 its sounds more like a Harley. No joke ! I realy felt so .. its sound at higher rpms are too good with the long silensor. If you dont beleive me check out the TBTS 'roaring video' in Youtube. And plz note that unlike bullets(100kmph) TBTS has a top speed of 120kmph.Man now thats a real Cruiser since it can be maintained at speeds in excess of 90kmph for long duration! The aluminium engine wont have heating problems as well.

Comfort - ohhh what to say - it simply has the best shock absorbing ability in india now.Has rear gas filled shocks.

I felt very comfortable riding it over 'idli' shaped patch works on the road.Handling - Those guys who fear a RE is too heavy, try out the TBTS. All through out my ride of 3kms I never felt it heavy. The center of gravity is low. Slight tilting wont make you feel its heaviness. I did drive it through a heavy traffic stretch and never once found it 'more' tough than my Pulsar. Sharp turns are very easy. May be the radius is a bit longer but still its maneuverability is great. On straight stretches the pick up was amazing as well.

BEST PART - all through the 3kms of my ride one thing I got in abundance is ATTENTION from everyone around ... oh ma god I wanted to buy the bike then and there.Amidst traffic just turn the throttle and 'smaller' bikers around just envy your presence!

The whole point here is - At 1lakh we have R15 and TBTS. But how would R15 look after say 3 yrs? TBTS would be all the same. Might need some chroming but can such a thing be done for the coslty fairings of a R15?

DOUBTS - After sales service is a big factor to consider before choosing a bike which doesnt sell in numbers similar to pulsar or unicorn. And its not like a Hero Honda Splendour where you fill fuel and drive for 5-6yrs! TBTS will need some maintenance and special care. Its iron parts might get rusted too soon if left uncared for.

Admit that the original bullet owners will never like TBTS for lack of thump and many other features. But one thing is for sure - This bike is for the Indo-Japanese bike loving freaks like me who want mileage, power looks and BRAND all in a new package which is lately being called Royal Enfield Thunderbird Twinspark!!!

Royal enfield thunderbird review..
Feb 10, 2009 10:11 PM 10485 Views

https://fourthplane.com/2009/01/hands-on-review-of-royal-enfield.htmL. Please visit the above link for review of royal enfield with pictures..

Thunderbird Twinspark:

Alongwith the new engine, Royal enfield has upgraded some other featurestoo. Halogen lamp replaces conventional lamp and hence you can expect increased life of the headlight.. For easy parking RE has made footrests (rider) of the Thunderbird twinspark foldable.

To reduce the metal, rear brake cable and chain sprocket is moved to the right sideof the bike. An oil window is provided to check the oil level.

Thenew UCE engine cranks out 19.8bhp of maximum power at 5250rpm and 28Nmof peak torque at 4000rpm. The all new 6 plate clutch can be engaged and disengaged with little effort. Credits to the five speed transmission the low end and mid range torque is spectacular.

The engine revs upto 6000rpm without any strain but the needle refuses tomove after that. The new Thunderbird Twinspark clocks 60kmph from standstill in just 6.2 seconds nearly a second faster than the Lean BurnThunderbird.

Pleasure to Own,Dream to ride
Jan 23, 2009 01:38 PM 8216 Views

Initially I was a bit apprehensive about getting this bike, as I stay in Gurgaon and travel to delhi, and I was wondering how it would handle in heavy traffic.

Well I have had the TB for over a year now, and have done over 16K kms on it, and still there is nothing compared the exhilaration and thrill of riding the bird.

So lets review

*Fuel

Decent Mileage ` approx 35-40 per lt, in heavy traffic driving also

*Comfort

Very Very comfortable, and even doing 100 km daily does not stress the shoulder or arms

*Reliability.

Quite reliable, i wont say infallible, as some minor thing is always off, like loose nut, indicator not working, wire loose, but, these things are only minor, and so far my TB has not given me any great trouble.

*Handling

Handling is good, however the turning radius leaves something to be desired. Also the bike is quite heavy and takes getting used to.

Looks

Looks are a major+, and when someone asks you about ur bike at red light, it give a warm feeling from inside.Overall the driving experience is awesome, once you have driven this one, all other bikes seem puny in comparison

Best Bike in its category..

I own a classic royal enfield 1965 model for 15 years now. Last year when I bought the TB I was a bit skeptical as one of my friend was facing some problems in the cam shaft and said had a couple other problems as well..

Initially I had a few problems in the Clutch and Brakes (probably because they were made cheap by subcontractors). Once that was fixed I never had got any problem, even with the starting.. I don't maintain it regularly but its a perfect companion.. Knows my urge and just springs to 110 km within a minute..

I would recommend this bike to anyone as it is comparatively easy to handle, Gives you 40-45 Km / PL. Real fun to have it.. If you are a Bullet Lover its a must have. I would recommend this bike to anyone as it is comparatively easy to handle, Gives you 40-45 Km / PL

I wud rate it maximum because I love it. Long time dream came true on 27FEB06. It has done 23000km now. Excellent in shape, style and comfortable ride.

I did not maintain it properly a little while before in terms of oil change etc. So the engine gave a lot of trouble which costed me a bomb to give back the original shape. Now it is fine. So this machine requires a lot of personal care.

Its too personal. Don't even give it to your dearest friend. It has all the traditionsl issues like oil Leakage, Mileage, etc. Buts I still love it. I get 38kmpl in bangalore city which is cool. It makes me to have a second thought on buying a car. Will I dump this machine after getting a car?? Will definitely not. Because the need is different. Style is different. Thunderbird is What makes it all.

Adrenalin Rush...oh boy
Jul 01, 2008 01:50 AM 7811 Views

It was november of 2005, in Chennai.enfield had organized its "log out" trip to mahabalipuram through ECR .my luck was riding high since I didnt have a bike and I got a call from the dealers telling me that I can use a thunderbird.wooooooooo.got it picked from adyar.got lot of help from my chennai friends to navigate through the roads in chennai.(m from blore).it was a kick starter one.silver colour.

it was a pure joy and sense of rush to hook on to the fifth gear which I found it difficult on chennai roads.next day early at 6 o clock all the bikers with their 350, 500, machismos were ready to rumble.one could spot some pulsars and splendors as well.never mind.

I never drove a bike in a rally so it was pure excitement like a kid getting his first toy.m fiancee was at the rear.which added some more adrenalin to the entire experience.

now coming to the bike.the power was simply mindblowing, with its pickup.braking was flawless, I felt so much in harmony with the bike.the height was simply perfect for me.though I had to go through the inconvenience of kicking the bike whenever it stopped but riding a pure machine at 120 kmh was simply worth the pain.

the sea breeze to ur left, the sands of kovalam.the drag race(which I won a round of it).adds all the sweet memories for the bird.

I touched 100- 120 were often.though missing a cycle wallah by inches.again the braking saved my life.

in short it was pure unadulterated rush of madness.never wished the day to end

Its Different....
Jun 23, 2008 02:34 PM 6606 Views

I have been bullet user (lover) for the last 15years, need less to mention my due respects to the more senior Bullet lovers…. (This is my third machine)… I wouldn’t say I am a veteran though because I believe that no one can take control/ master a Bullet, and if you think you do, sorry! but you live in an illusion….

The graph goes this way… after 6 months of usage you feel you know the machine well after 2 years you think you have mastered the machine…. But after 10 years you feel there is so much to learn and appreciate about this master piece (ask me). I have read a lot of articles where people talk of the pros and cons therefore I am not getting into that.

I am extremely possessive about my machine and I feel its funny when I read articles from some Bullet users calling it a cumbersome bike…high on Maintenance and so on.

Let me put the facts right…. Go for a bullet if you have the passion for it (else you have enough cheaper options….). It’s a horse and needs to be treated well. It will ensure that you respect her and every time you start it without getting kicked …actually lights up your day. I am talking about the machines with Kick start (Not the toys with an electric ignition). Mark my word people if treated well it will never let you down. Believe me bullet gives you an indication of failures much in advance, you just need to feel it… listen to the engine sound…. Lubricate your chain… Check the oil levels.. and the condition of the clutch and accelerator cable.. that’s all what you have to do!!!

My advice to the starters is please understand Bullet is a collectors item and have your basics in place before you go in for one. In a nut shell it’s a great machine that has a glorious History behind it and Royal Enfield is  the Oldest bike company which is still under production…

So have fun and Cheers to life!!!!

New Thunder Bird - Twin spark Engine
Jun 23, 2008 02:18 PM 37338 Views

The New Unit Construction Engine - Thunderbird Twin Spark Engine Bike has been released with all its previous minor hick ups fixed. The Bike is around Rs.105940/- on road. The new changes are,

  1. Twin spark Engine.

  2. Hydrolic Tappet adjustment system.

  3. Internal Gear and Clutch Assembly.

  4. Very high Mileage. The Showroom guy says 43 kmpl.I am getting 42 before 1st service itself.

  5. 21 BHP as compared to 18 earlier.

  6. A slight change in the Handle position. Very comfortable in 100+ kms ride.

The Initial Pickup is excellent. The ride is cool, though it looks big, the weight is not noticed as the bike is in motion. Felt like a better model, than the earlier ones. And Even the traditional Oil leak problem is fixed. I am not sure, the thump can be compared with Electra or Standard. It seems a little low. And the price of Rs.105940 includes self start, Disc brakes.

The Product is specified on Royal Enfeild's official website. I was told that the said Showroom has sold 22 bikes till date. And there were no complaints from anybody. The fuel tank is around 16 ltrs, and reserve of 2 litres. I had taken it on a maiden ride to Mysore, the bike is really wonderful in long trips. The engine smoothned up after 60 kms into the ride.

In Total a great version.

T.Bird the Classic cruiser ..
Jun 17, 2008 04:57 PM 8124 Views

My name is Ganesh. I went through all the Joys/painful experiences shared by the folks. I would also like to share my experience overhere. I own a T.Bird 2005 Model. Its around 3 years ever since I bought my Bull. I bought it in Chennai. Currently I live in Bangalore. I have ridden 20000kms so far. In between I was in Gulf for an year (2006). So I would say I have used it only for 2 years. My bull had to lay down idle at my home for an year with my absence, because no one was there to take care of it.

I have covered 591kms in 9 Hours with my Bull. Thats my record so far. However I prefer to break my own record by covering 700kms in 9 Hours with my bull. I have changed clutch cable twice in 3 years. I never faced any issues like tyre puncture, break downs, oil leakages etc., I haven't changed my Headlamp and my indicators. No electrical issues so far. Its all factory default. I have covered almost 350 SQKMS in karnataka/Tamilnadu. My bull had seen good roads, bad roads, mountains, dangerous curves etc., I haven't changed my tryes & tubes yet..it keeps going. Ofcourse it a bit expensive in terms of maintenance.

I used to get it serviced once in 4000 or 5000 Kms. I used to spend Rs.1500 to Rs.2000/- per service. I have a habit of get it serviced only at Rolay Enfield show rooms. Here in Bangalore, I do it at Tecnik Motors-Indra Nagar. They service it very well. I used to wipe my Bull once in a month with kerosine after cleaning it with normal clothes and cover with cotton cover always. Thats the reason why, I can maintain my bike rust free even after 3 years. It gives me 35 to 40Kmpl. My Bull has become part of my life. I feel proud to Own such a big pride machine. Obviously I don't mind spending some extra money to maintain it. My suggestion for the people who worry about rust, wipe it with clean cotton cloth once in 2 days completely including both the rims & wipe with Kerosine once in a month. Never use water to clean the bike (except water wash at the time of servicing). In case if you have to use water, wipe completely & cover it always when not in use. Out of my own experience, I would say that thunder bird is the best RE models. Although its quite expensive to buy, its worth buying. In case if you are thinking about maintenance free & fuel consumtion, please better buy some 100cc or 150cc. Never think about Bulls.

Updated on 23/06/2008 - Check list for the long ride:-

Hey Buddies,

I would like to share my thrilling experience during my chennai. It was amazing when I visited chennai and came back to Bangalore on 3rd day. I was least bothered during my journey.

Though I had a luck and haven't prepared myself for such a long ride. I'd covered 760kms. I had to face several uncertainties since I didn't verify my check list. So just to keep things in mind while preparing for a long ride.

  1. Make sure that your Bull is in Good condition. If possible get it serviced with complete Oil changes.

  2. Make sure that your clutch cable & sparc plug are in good condition. However have  spares along with you.

  3. Make sure that you have your tool box with you.

  4. Check your both the tyre presure. (25 - 35)

  5. Full the fuel upto the capacity which will give you some more Kms extra rather than filling often during your ride.

  6. Maintain your bull in 65 - 70 Kms on the main roads. Do not raise more accelerator. It will cause poor milage.

  7. do not carry your Credit / Debit cards. Preferably have some money with you. In case if you require to carry your card, please carry your debit card with limited balance. Its just for saftey as well as in some places, we can't expect to have ATMs :-)

  8. Never ride your bull on the rain.

  9. Once in 2 hours, Halt your bull and wait for 10 - 15 minutes, then continue..

  10. Avoid traveling alone. ( I did this mistake. Luckily nothing happens)

  11. Atlast, do not plan longer rides in the night.

  12. Wear your Helmet compulsorily. Do not ride your bull without Helmet.

Will update more soon.

I bought the bird in 2005 and I would say that it is the best buy I have done till date. For all those who are thinking of the buying the thunder bird, do keep in mind a few points. It is not a maintenance free or low maintenance bike. If u take care of her she will take care of you.

A few oil leaks and electrical issues are standard problems. You will have to get used to the bird in order to shift gears smoothly, it wont happen from the time you take it out of the showroom. It is not a regular city bike, so if you are in the sales field and have to travel a lot in the city .. not a good idea to take the bird. Apart from this, .. the bird is the best bike to drive. If you love going on trips it is a wonderful experience. I don’t think at the moment there is any other bike that can take on this machine.

its own value. Duplicate parts are available in the market but it

This bike really Rocks
Mar 30, 2008 03:08 PM 5211 Views

This bike is one hell of a bike. Once u start riding it u keep on riding it and every other bike just feels like nothing in fornt of it..

It really feels like god and its worth the price if u r a true biker..Though it has some problems such as it is heavy so if ur tire gets puntured get ready for a big exercise. Rest it is good for long rides though the rider enjoys it more and also it might just act on its own so bee ready for some surprises

It tend to heat up though as you go for longer rides and sometimes its idling also rises..

So u should also know what do in such situations.. it really helps if u know what ur bike is I mean technically..

But one thing for sure u do fall in love with it every time u ride it

All in all though its a bike to die for

Good Bike..lots of technical snags
Feb 29, 2008 05:14 PM 8533 Views

I had all possible dreams of owning a thunderbird and finally I made it. I am the lone rider of my bike and exactly after one and a half years later all kinds of troubles started. First Cam Wheel noise started and so far the company is able to solve it (The Company made 2 replacements). Invariably every Thunderbird owner is aware of the Cam wheel issue and replacement is inevitable.

Finally, last month my bike seized in the middle of the road and now I had to change the whole Piston, Cylinder set. Also now they discovered that the Crank assembly needs to change and the connecting rod is shaky. Huh…. I do not know whom and what to blame.

Manufacturing defects, unprofessional service. In my experience the quality of the spares are very bad and every time the dealer says they are trying out with several metals and I feel we are testing their product at our cost of customers. It is a good bike and there is no compromise but, 'Is Thunderbird model is still on Product improvement from Royal Enfield.??!!!!! '. Do we have to wait for the final product...How long we have to wait.???
